I think we need to talk. Like, more than we already have. And you're probably going to hate me for it.

I know, okay. I know. But there's so much more to things than what we knew and so much more has happened here since then.

We're SHIELD, May. We are, and we always have been. Even when the organization isn't intact or present, we are SHIELD. And we have a responsibility to help everyone who can be helped.

Grant included.

Do you? Because right now I don't think you do. You are willing to believe in him because of something he said. How do you know those weren't lies?

Yes, we have a responsibility to help those who can be helped but not everyone can be. Sometimes there is no helping them, Phil, you know that. And Grant Ward has done nothing that would make me believe he should be or can be helped.

Because Natasha backed him up. The rest is because we've gotten to a point now where, god help me, we trust each other.

No. He's not done anything for you, anything to make you believe it. But I do. Melinda, I believe that there's something good left in him. I think part of me always has. I just needed to see something before I could let myself act on it.

We trusted Garrett and you saw how that ended.

What did Ward do that has you so convinced that there is good in him?

I know. I know, but it's not the same. Garrett knew what he was doing. He wanted to do it. He thought it was fun.

He stopped hiding.

You can't expect me to believe that Ward wasn't consciously aware of every action he took. There were always other options but he chose to do everything that he did. He wasn't forced to do any of it.

He stopped hiding. That's what he did to convince you there was still good in him? Who are you and what have you done with the Phil I swore to protect?

I'm not saying he was forced. I'm not. He's still responsible for what he did, for every action he took and decision he made, but there's a difference between doing something of your own free will and doing something as a matter of coercion.

It sounds stupid. I know it sounds stupid. But you know I tried to talk to him. After everything happened. He finally decided it was a conversation worth having. And from there it just... snowballed.

And this is me, Melinda. You know this is me.
