I think that's part of the point. It seems to me that he wants someone to relate to whatever he has to experience; the despair of taking people before their time, the letting innocents being killed for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. He wants a life, not a death, so being concerned about living through it isn't the problem, right? It's more of what will that burden be?
