All right Peeta, happy now?
How many of you use bows here? I know Oliver does, and I do, but it seems like most people here use guns. It's the weapon I use at home, and if there's a way to keep fighting with one, if I have to fight here, then that's what I want to use, but I don't think the wooden bows I'm used to are going to cut it.

Oliver's going to make me a bow like his. He says he doesn't want anything for it though. I don't understand and I don't like it, people here keep saying that, and it means I owe them now.

You're an archer? That's bloody brilliant, that is! Suppose you use the same bow and we make you special rock salt encrusted arrows...do just as much damage, hey? I always thought archery was cool.

It's how I fed my family, back home. You can do that here? Make arrows that do as much damage as a gun? I could learn to use one of those, I guess, but this is more comfortable for me.

Good on you, love. In a way, sure. For the things we hunt, should be easy enough. Wouldn't work as well as a gun on a human being or an animal but they're not normally our concern here, yeah? Tell you what, darling, if you find the bow and arrows and teach me how to use them too...I'll fix up the arrowheads and teach you hand-to-hand combat or take you shooting with guns so you've got well-rounded skills. Fair? I'd love to learn. 'm a bit of a sponge, these days, in that respect.

That sounds like it could be a good trade. There are things you can teach me, in terms of hand to hand, that will work for someone who isn't as strong? I can draw a bow, but I'm never going to beat a 6ft tall man in a physical fight if I'm just throwing punches.

Yeah it's wooden. The one I've got on me right now anyway. I've used steel and gold before. That crossbow thing sounds interesting though. Might give that a go.

I do occasionally. It's also something I teach in the classes sometimes, when people are interested.

I can teach you how to use a crossbow, if you want. You can use steel bolts with one.

I don't know if I want to go to some kind of training, that gives the impression that I'll fight your war I've handled a crossbow a couple times in training for the games but I'm not an expert. Are there classes just for crossbows?

I don't know what kind of fighting usually happens here, but I'm from where Oliver is from and he can do pretty impressive things with bows. I've never seen him touch a gun before. Besides, you can have all sorts of different arrows that can be even more effective than guns.

I saw his bow when he showed up, it's beautiful, looks much more functional than anything I've seen back home. What kind of arrows?

Depends on your needs, like I said, I don't know what kind of evil we'd go against here, but I've seen explosive arrows, GPS arrows, hook arrows... it's just a matter of coming up with what we need. And he has plenty of experience with that too.

How do you know Oliver anyway?

Things don't work differently with me, even if he is just being nice. You didn't expect anything when you threw me that bread, but I owed you anyway I still do. The bow will be worth owing him a favor. I just wish I could pay people off or trade right away. An open favor makes me uneasy.

I didn't — and don't — want anything for the bread, Katniss. It was a loaf of burned bread I threw at you. It landed in the mud in the rain. What could you possibly owe me for that? Maybe I'm wrong but...I just don't get the feeling like they actually want anything in return for their kindness.

I mean, I get the feeling that they all band together and now that we're 'one of them' as far as they're concerned, we're included. Like a huge family or something. Or maybe they're paying forward favors from others. You have to remember we're not in Panem; everything is different here. Try to relax a little, will you?
