Who: Marian and Robin
What: Reunion of sorts
When: Early Afternoon
Where: The Library
Rating: TBD
Status: Complete

Marian brushed a curl back from her face, the loose bun not really keeping a hold of the curls all that well. She finished soon, that she was a little glad of. She had to come in rather early that morning and as fantastic as this place could be, it had been a little too quiet. Until five minutes ago, of course, when one of the girls who worked there with her realised Marian was leaving in twenty minutes so thought now would be a good time to pile her with the books that had to get put away. At least she didn't have to carry them, these little trolley things really were fantastic. She could get this done in no time, if she could just get to the right aisle.

She only had a couple more to put back, so she stopped next to where they kept the computers to fix the cream blouse she had on, the silk making her grin. Clothes were so easy to get now, and she rather appreciated the money she got from working here that allowed her to buy such nice things. Just as she was about to start pushing the trolley again a rather familiar face caught her attention from the corner of her eye. A grin split across her face as she found it difficult to breathe for a second.

"Robin?" she said quiet enough that it wouldn't bother others here, but loud enough that he wouls hear.

His eyebrows went up. What was she not understanding? "Well, I assume that we are not a strict historical study, with stories like that being written about us, even if I am debated in schools."

Peering more closely at her, he asked, "Have you truly not looked into it at all?"

"Stories like what? And debated?"

She really was starting to get beyond confused about this. At his next question she shook her head. Did she had reason to look into this sort of thing? After all she had chosen not to touch any of the history books that went as far back as home because she wanted to avoid knowing what had happened without being able to do anything about it.

"Of course not."

It was not possible that she was unaware... was it? Especially with that book right there. "Stories such as Lord of the Forest," he said, with just a hint of mockery in his voice at the name of the title. He was trying not to be frustrated, truly he was; but when she had been putting him off for so long back home, only to be reading of exploits between them that he could only have imagined... it was not easy. "And apparently, I was found not guilty of being a terrorist in a school's history class. Funny, that, considering Vaizey used that very word for me."

Perhaps it was just as well that she had not read up on their story. If the legends were correct, that would be a most unpleasant discovery for her.

For that matter, he wondered if he should read them; if they were history, his own demise was likely recorded. He was not sure he wanted to know about that.

"A story I haven't read yet. And...you're talked about in history?"

This really was getting a little too confusing. She couldn't see why not, after all what he was doing was keeping England alive, at least it was when she was back in Nottingham. But to think that he was still talked about centuries later?

Soon, curiousity took over confusion and she reached over to put her glass down and pick the book up, her hand staying in his. Reading the back of it, something she had failed to do when she picked it up.

"Oh..." she said before leaning it against her leg and opening it at a random place, reading it to herself.

Robin's strong arms lifted her as if she weighed no more than a feather, her legs wrapping around his waist as she was pressed up against the bark of the tree. Soon, his rough hand was journeying up the expanse of Marian's leg, before it found her most intimate of places. With one single movement of his finger, he had her mewling as Marian threw her head back, her mouth open in...

"...Right," she said as she snapped the book shut, her cheeks turning bright red.

"According to several people on the computer, I'm known; it would be impossible if you were not, in that case." He glanced at her curiously. "You do not know what the book is about?"

When she picked it up and opened it, whatever she had read got her blushing like mad, and he decided he would have to flip through it later and try to guess what she had found.

In the meantime, he could tease her a bit. "So, was I correct in my assumption?"

"Strange. Expected, that you'd be talked about, but still strange."

She threw the book onto the table, making a mental note to return that the first chance she got. Preferably before Robin got a hold of it. At his question, her eyes went back to him as she picked up her wine glass at took a sip.

"What assumption?"

"Very strange," he agreed. Although, rather nice that our contributions are not forgotten. "I thought earlier how pleased Tuck would be-- oh, that's right; you have not met him. Brother Tuck is a monk, who has joined the gang."

He quickly sipped his wine, not wanting to get too much into the question of his time. Hopefully, she would not ask.

The question she did pose was much easier to handle. "That your book there had very little resemblance to reality." More's the pity...

Someone had joined the gang? He had said that he wasn't from long after the Holy Land and they were married plus had someone new in the gang.

"So exactly when did we get married?" she asked, the question she had wanted to ask since he mentioned it.

When he brought up the book, her eyes fell to it before she took another sip of her wine.

"Yes that's right."

His heart stopped when she made one of the queries he had been dreading. Rather than answer right away, he threw back the rest of the wine in his glass. When she replied about the book, he grasped onto that, hoping for a reprieve.

"I shall have to read through that, and see for myself."

"You will not!" she said as she made to reach for the book, putting her wine to the side and pulling it from his reach.

She hadn't failed to notice that he avoided her question, so she slid a little closer, placing a hand on his arm and keeping the arm with the book behind her back.

"Go on. When dd we marry?"

Robin was grinning, about to try to retrieve the book, when she asked again. The grin faded as he searched for a response that would keep him from having to say anything too painful. He made a desperate stab at talking around it, knowing as he did that she would never go for it.

"Since we have agreed to have a wedding that you remember, it hardly signifies, does it?"

"I'm just curious," she said with a shrug. "Must have been not long after the Holy Land."

She didn't know why she was so curious, she just was. But she could see a flicker of something in his eyes, and part of her really wanted to get him smiling again.

"I think I best hide this book," she said as she made to stand.

He really did not want to discuss this. But, nor did he want to ruin what had been a nice evening by seeming too reticent.

As Marian went to stand, he took a light hold of her wrist, to stop her. "Wait." He could not look at her when he said this, could not look into her eyes and remember the pain in them as she laid in his arms in Acre. His head bowed, he quietly said, "We got married shortly after you were apparently brought here. It was in the Holy Land."

Marian sat again when he stopped her, sitting closer to him than before hand. When he told her when they got married, she frowned slightly at the look on his face. Reaching out, she cupped his cheek to make him look at her.

"Something happened. What happened?"

How could he tell her? He had just been thinking that he might not want to learn of his own demise... but maybe this was a chance to change things. Someone on the computer had mentioned that people were occasionally sent back; perhaps, if she were forewarned, it would not have to happen.

Still, despite the glimmer of hope, memories of that hideous day flooded back to him as she forced him to meet her eyes. Trying with only marginal success to suppress his despair, he said, "You died." It was so strange, reliving that moment in his head-- and sitting here with her; his emotions were in a whirl. "Gisborne ran you through. We married as you died."

If he looked at her any longer, he was in danger of crying at the images flashing through his brain. He needed to collect himself, and he could not with that clear blue gaze regarding him. Dropping his chin again, he struggled to regain his composure.

He hoped he had done the right thing.

"What?" she asked quietly.

She died by Guy's hand? But that wasn't possible, Guy would never do that to her. He would never hurt her to such a degree, to end in her death. Shaking her head, she muttered 'No' as she kept thinking about it. Then he looked down and she knew he wasn't just saying that. He wasn't joking. At least she managed to marry him before she was taken away from him. Her eyes filling up with tears, she reached forward and wrapped her arms tight around him, pulling him to her.

"I'm sorry."

She was only seconds from death when she was brought here. By Guy...Guy killed her.

Each denial that she murmured hurt more than the last. He could never understand why she did not see how wicked Gisborne was, why she had always insisted on giving the benefit of the doubt to the man who had usurped Robin's life and terrorized everyone in his path. Now, to hear her still thinking that the sheriff's right-hand man was incapable of hurting her...

When she grasped him, he grabbed hold of her, clinging to her as if in fear that he would suddenly discover that this was all a bizarre hallucination, that she was still dead and he would wake up, cold and alone once more. He buried his face in her neck, inhaling the warm, flowery scent of her, managing to keep his tears in check, even if the fear had the better of him.

At her apology, he pulled back a bit and stared at her in disbelief. "It's not your fault." Smoothing her hair away from her face, loving the softness of both her tresses and her skin, he shook his head. "I do not know if we can change what happened. But, perhaps, we can. Maybe that's why we were brought here." He was starting to get a hold on his memories again, pushing them back to the corner of his mind where he could ignore them.

"Just promise me; promise that if you get sent back and you remember this, you will stay away from him. Yell for me; I'm not far off, but I do not know you're facing off with him." I get there too late. He had almost taken his own life a few times in the weeks immediately following her passing, the knowledge that he had failed to keep her safe too much to bear. If not for the gang's near-constant attendance, he would have succeeded.

And he would never have found her here.

Her hands came to his hair, her fingers stroking there softly as she held him close before thay ran to his back, a comfort for both of them. Brushing back her tears as she felt him pull away, she melted a little into his touch along her hair.

"Maybe. Or maybe we can't and you're here so we can have that second chance anyway."

And to think she kept saying she wanted what she did for a wedding, she wanted to be the one to marry him. How selfish that sounded now. He had married her as she lay dying. He tied himself to her even though he knew they wouldn't get that life together.

"I promise. I promise I will."

She ran her hand along his cheek before pulling his lips to hers, her kiss almost desperate. She was seconds away from being taken from him and he had already lost her. She would not let him lose her, not here and not in the Holy Land if she could prevent it. Wrapping her arms tight around him, she allowed her kisses to become deeper, somehow feeling like she had to prove her promise was true and prove that he would not lose her.

"Whatever this is, I am grateful for it."

And then, she was kissing him, his own desperation reflected in the way she pressed her lips against his. Normally, a kiss like this would inflame him; instead, right now, it soothed. Not that Marian ever did not get his thoughts turned in directions that would be sure to earn him a slap if she knew. But, at this moment, it was about a reassurance, a reaffirmation that they were together.

That did not stop him from pulling her across his lap when she held him tighter, needing to hold her as close as possible as their kisses deepened. When he started to want to turn things in a more amorous direction, he moved his head back. This was not the time, much as he wished it were. "I love you," he murmured, framing her face between his palms. "I'm sorry I did not say it more often before, and I will not make that mistake a..." Second time? Third? Trailing off, it occurred to him how many chances he had misspent. He had never told her before he left for the Holy Land. He had not told her after she had regained consciousness in that dank cave. Even after finally admitting it, by accident, he still kept the words in more than allowing himself to be vulnerable to her. "I will not make that mistake again."

"So am ."

She felt him pull her slightly and she soon got the message, making it easier for him to pull her onto his lap. Despite the large amount of kisses they had shared she had never felt as if they had been this physically close. Yes, they usually stayed tight against each other but for some reason the position she was in now made her feel as if they were closer than they hadbeen before.

She could not stop the smile when he told her he loved her, letting her own hand rest on his cheek as her thumb softly stroked. At his apology, she brought her fingers to his mouth to stop any more of an apology coming from his lips.

"I knew anyway. I love you too."

Her fingers on his lips were too soft, too sweet, her words even sweeter. He gave her one more, quick kiss, and smiled. "I'm still going to say it." Then, before he could do anything stupid-- or before his potential for stupidity was called to her attention,-- he shifted her to the seat beside him, his arm around her so that her head could rest on his shoulder, if she liked.

He needed to laugh about something, and it was probable that Marian did, too. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed the book, abandoned and forgotten. He quickly leaned across her and grabbed it, moving it to his side opposite her. "I'll just be saving this for later," he said with a grin.

"Good. Because I like hearing it."

She smiled as he moved her to sit beside him, taking the chance to curl up beside him whilst it was there. Something told her she was going to like sitting like this with him and probably would do it whenever she could. But then he was grabbing the book and she laughed, trying to get it back.

"No you wont."

The light teasing, without the overtones of secrecy and being rushed that had marked most of their meetings since his return from Crusade, reminded him of when they were younger. Even though he felt a bit ridiculous behaving in a rather juvenile fashion, Robin could not resist maintaining it, enjoying the playfulness.

"I had forgotten how much I enjoyed reading something before retiring for the night," he said, as if to himself. "This shall do quite nicely."

Hanging onto her in a way that she could get loose if she actually tried, but hoping to keep her away from the book, he opened it with his free hand and held it out to read aloud. "Marian denied his accusation. 'Even if Gisbourne showed an interest in me, I would not have him,' she declared fervently. 'What can I do to make you believe me?' Inspiration struck then, and she reached for the bodice of her gown--"

He pretended that he was distracted by Marian, but in truth, he could not bring himself to read the next bit aloud. Perhaps back at camp, when Djaq was away, and with another name in place of Marian's. But not to her.

"Don't you dare!"

Then he was reading it. Groaning a little, she struggled a small amount to try and reach for the book but there was no way she was going to manage it. Finally giving in, she leaned against him completely, listening to the passage he had chosen. When he trailed off, she smirked and looked up at him.

"A problem?"

She knew she was probably blushing, but she wouldn't let him win this.

He was fully aware that this had suddenly become a contest, and he was torn between the instincts to keep playing along (especially with the blush on her face), and avoid reading this aloud to her. "No, no problem," he answered breezily. "I do not want to ruin the story for myself; I would rather begin at the beginning, when I start it before bed tonight."
