Garrett had to admit it. He was pretty disappointed in Ward. He'd given into his weaknesses. John thought he'd taught the kid better than that. But, after ten years, John knew that he'd be able to reel him back in. Get the weapon he'd trained back into his own hands, and under his control again. He just had to play it right. And, luckily for him, and probably unluckily for the rest of Lawrence, John Garrett could be pretty much anyone he wanted to be.

John had to admit though, after looking at the future, he'd done a good job at ripping apart the organization that had left him for dead all those years ago. And, sure. Phil was putting it back together, but even John could admit that he though Coulson would do a hell of a lot better job than Fury ever did. He'd always try to keep his agents alive. A part of him wished that someone like Coulson had been in charge back in 1989. But, well, wishes didn't change the past. That sort of thinking was a weakness.

John had arrived at the second location Grant had sent him, about an hour early. Scoped it out, just in case that one had been compromised as well. Oh, he trusted that Ward wouldn't betray him. Not on purpose. But, he wouldn't put it past the little hacker, or Romanoff to hack into Ward's phone. Especially since, he'd already done it himself.

But, now. He sat on a bench, reading the paper. Well, looking like he was reading the paper. Turning the page every so often, even though he was paying more attention to his surroundings, than to the words printed on the pages in his hand.

It probably should have bothered him more that he'd been so willing to meet with the man that he knew had built him up from nothing into a weapon. Taken a broken and hollowed out kid out of juvie with a choice. It had taken him a lot of time and a lot of hurt to accept that. But he was getting to. He understood what his life had been. And he'd been getting past it all, making his own choices. But then, what should have been the happiest he could possibly be, a chance with Skye, something real and tangible to feel, one text from John Garrett and Ward knew he'd lose her.

He should have just left the man to his own devices. But he couldn't do that. Everyone got a second chance here. And on some level it was still ingrained in him to help Garrett get what he needed.

He'd gotten himself a second phone already. For when he needed it. He'd been taught well, second best since Romanoff they'd said. He wondered how the rankings would shift given he'd already been in deep cover during the espionage tests, every aspect of his life checked and double checked and they'd never seen the lies.

Ward spotted Garrett quickly, reading, actually turning the page which was pretty key to not getting made.

"They're not hacking my phone John." he said simply, sitting on the bench. "And you don't need to worry that they'll come after you. Thing about this place, we work on a truce. Second chances all round, like I said, and if you take it. Maybe things can be good here for you."

He knew the look he'd gotten as soon as he'd sat down. Weak. Garrett thought he'd failed. A million other people, they wouldn't have caught it. But Ward knew the man well enough to know that much. And maybe he had failed, maybe he was weak. But he wasn't here to take orders from anyone. Not anymore.

"How long have you been here?"

John had clocked Ward as he approached. He's have thought the kid was being sloppy, but knew he'd taught him too well. He'd wanted him to spot him. Still, the fact that he turned up showed that he was still weak.

"Tech isn't exactly your strong suit, kid. You're no Skye." Garrett folded the paper up, and looked at Ward. "Well, that would just mean they've gone soft. And, I'd rather not risk a bullet in the head. Truce or no truce."

John examined his protege, his weapon with a critical eye. Ward had given into his weaknesses, and Garrett knew he would have to fix that to make the kid any use to him at all.

"Arrived a week ago. Been scouting out the area ever since."

Of course he'd been scouting. It wasn't a shock he'd been here longer than a week. He'd been watching. He'd know just who Ward had befriended. Davina, Caroline, ELena. ...And he'd know how close he'd been getting to Skye. It was a weakness. He'd tell him so. But Skye wasn't a weakness. He wouldn't let anyone, not even John tell him that she was.

"I learned a couple of things from her actually. But this isn't about tech. This is about being a specialist. She doesn't know I'm here, even if she knew the last location she doesn't know this one.

That same look aagin.

What hadn't he thought about? This wasn't the crazy Garrett, the one that had been given the serum. The one that didn't deserve to surrvive. This man here, was his S.O. The man he owed his life to.

"I'm gonna make sure that doesn't happen." If asked Ward wouldn't have noticed, the slight, just slight change in demenour. A defferance he didn't know he was showing. Habit, some might say conditioned.

"You can get by here. We both can."

Garrett raised an eyebrow at that, before breaking into a grin. He chuckled, amused. He supposed he couldn't blame the kid for being suspicious. Especially not after he'd seen what happened to him.

"It's good to see you, kid." John said, slapping him on the shoulder. "So, come on. Fill me in. What's with all those filters against evil, and heaven anyway?"

Garrett noticed th change in his protege, and was pleased that he could still have that affect on the kid. He always had been easy to manipulate. Stubborn as a mule, sometimes. But, he always came around to his way of thinking.

"You too" he replied almost automatically. But he meant it. It was good to see him. In spite of everything. In spite of the millions of reasons it was going to make things complicated. With Skye, his friendships, Elena, Caroline, Davina. And then there was Cap. How the hell did he plan to explain that one. It wasn't just something Garrett would accept. He'd want to know every reason and action behind it. Friends were weaknesses.

"This place might be even weirder than home. Heaven and hell are both real, both have real threats. The people here, about a year ago maybe, fought Lucifer back into his cage. There are demons, vampires, werewolves. Its taken some getting used to."

Ward reached into his pocket for the amulet he'd grabbed leaving the building. "Wear this, concealed is obviously better, the charm protects from demonic possession."

He'd covered most of the bases he needed to. Bar one. Bar Skye.

"She's not gonna take you being here well. But then you know that, you've been watching me, right? For days now. You know how I feel about her, you always have." He didn't care if she was his weakness. He wouldn't give her up. "...whatever happens. She stays safe. I'm gonna need your word on that."

Garrett took the gaudy piece of jewellery that Ward handed to him. Wondering how the hell that thing would protect from demon possession. But, he figured that Ward was still loyal enough to not play him. The kid had always had a soft spot when it came to him, and he knew how to use it.

"How the hell does this things work, anyway?" He said, looking at it suspiciously, before slipping it around his neck, and tucking it under his clothes.

"I really ordered you to put down Fitz and Simmons?" He said, ignoring what Ward was saying about Skye. Wondering about the few things the internet had informed him about his future. Knowing exactly how it would turn out, and willing to do whatever it takes to stop that from happening. Dying, was not on the cards this time.

"I know how you feel about the girl." Garrett said looking Ward in the eye. "You have my word, that I won't hurt her."

At least he'd taken the amulet. It was important to make sure he kept his own mind. Ward had seen the results when he hadn't. "Not a clue, just does, call it an 084 of this worlds very own. But it works."

Talking about Fitzsimmons brought up a whole new set of worries. What if he asked how it had happened. Or learned they hadn't died, that he'd let that weakness get to him. Though knowing Garrett he already knew that. Knew he'd disobeyed that order. That he'd stopped simply being the scared kid and tried his level best to save their lives while making sure Garrett believed them dead. Out of friendship, out of caring. Whatever it was. He knew he'd pay for the weakness somehow, maybe not rght then but he would. "Yeah you did, they hurt you pretty bad, It was a mess, then you asked Raina to inject you with that stuff, the GH325."

Ultimately whatever came next. Skye was safe. He'd seen to it. Garrett was a lot of things but he didn't tend to go back on his word. Not to him anyway.

"Thank you. I'll help you, you know I will. She just...she has to stay safe." he met his mentors gaze knowing it was probably more pity and judgement than anything else. Still it was there and it had been said. Skye was off limits. He'd stood up to John and clearly been respected for it.

"Wow, I must have been pissed off. Those two are more useful alive than dead." Garrett said, the wheels of his mind going into action. The boy had developed too many weaknesses without him there to correct them.

But, he could work at fixing that. He had time. He'd leave him the girl. But, the scientists, those other girls who'd gotten close to him. They needed dealing with.

John stood then, throwing the paper into the bin. He knew his behavior would probably put the kid on edge, but that was where he wanted him. He wanted him wondering when the other shoe would drop.

"Come on kid, where's a good place for a coffee around here?"

"You could say that." He had been furious. But he had reasons to be. And Ward by all rights should have followed through on the order to cross them off. Thing was, Garrett knew that. He knew they'd lived. He knew he'd died. He knew his protege had failed him and he wasn't doing anything about it.

He even stood up and asked where the best place for coffee was. That didn't make sense. None of this made sense. Was this a play? Was this something he needed to be figuring out?

"That's it." he said simply, weirdly unnerved by how easily he'd taken it all. "I haven't...I guess I thought you'd be less pleased to see me."

He wasn't going to outright ask why he wasn't being torn down for his failure but he needed to get some clarity here. This was throwing him, putting him on edge. And he didn't like it there.

"It's a brave new world, kid." John stated, flippantly. "You weren't planning on failing again, were you?" He said, narrowing his eyes as he looked at Ward. The kid was acting weak again. He was going to have to beat it out of him. Again.

The disapproval flashed across his face. So, he could make sure that Ward knew he'd overstepped. Before he switched back to a grin again, like nothing had happened.

"So. Coffee. I don't know about you, but I could do with the pick me up."

And there it was, the other shoe. Oh he had some kind of plan that he wasn't getting into, not to him anyway. The comment about failing, this disapproval.

"No sir. Not again." he said by way of reply, by way of habit more than anything else. He'd pushed it too far but at least now he knew something of where the limits were. And he'd gotten Garrett to promise not to hurt Skye. That was the most important thing. Whatever else he had to do, he'd do.

Skye would be safe.

"Coffee it is." he added trying to get his voice back to the calm levels it had been at before all this, compartmentalizing his worries. His feelings for Skye, his friendships. He needed to push it down. Push it all down. His face became cold, impassive. Focused.

"This way"
