Danny didn't know whether it was a good idea to talk or not, but thinking about what had happened had stirred up a tempest of emotions which he knew he'd have to deal with at some point. He'd already been putting it all for way too long. He'd spoken to Davina but that was different. She was a kid. She couldn't really understand. Perhaps that was why he'd opened up to her.
Georgina was a different matter. But if he didn't tell someone, he thought he might burst, especially with all the remembering going on recently. It was hard, hearing people talking about war and heroes and death and remembrance. Danny's experience of war had been very different. War had taken everything from him - his friends, his girlfriend, his child, his life and Rafe. He'd lost Rafe even before he'd lost his life, and the former had been by far the worse experience.
Since being in Lawrence, Danny had been tempted, more than once, to search for what had become of Evelyn and his best friend, whether his child had been a boy or a girl and who they'd grown up to be, but it had been too painful. He'd always faltered before even beginning. Although he wanted to believe that they'd all lived long and fulfilled lives, he couldn't help the twinge of jealousy that struck him every time he imagined the three of them living happily without him, as though he'd never existed. As though he was just a mistake Evie had made once upon a time. Danny suppressed the shiver that ran through him at the thought, lifting up his glass to down the strong, amber liquid inside it before calling out to the blonde barmaid for another when she had a minute.
