The last couple of days had been a bit of a whirlwind, from going up for an introductory session in the Cessna to being offered a job teaching people to fly with Hetrick Air Services. All he'd been doing was talking to one of the guys, about the planes and how to fix them, about his past in the armed services, about his love of flying, and suddenly he was agreeing to take on a job, with no guarantee that he'd be able to get faked papers or ID. Still, it had all turned out for the best. Claudia and Connor were working on his documentation and, in the meantime, the guy he'd been talking to had said he could take the plane he'd helped fix out for a ride that evening. Of course, the first thing he'd thought of was his promise to take Davina out flying. For some reason, he'd really connected with the girl, opened up to her about things he hadn't even mentioned to anyone else. He wanted to give something back, to thank her for listening, and he didn't think there was anything better he could give her than her first flight. He remembered how Evie had loved flying at sunset, the look on her face as she'd gazed, awed, at the blood orange horizon. Part of Danny was worried that he was trying to recreate that moment with Davina, to drown out the loss of losing Evie, but it wasn't that simple. Sunset was a time that Danny would always feel fond of and sharing that with a friend in a strange place was the best thing he could think of doing.
Pulling up outside the address she'd given him in the car he'd got from Emma, Danny opened his door and climbed out, leaving the engine running. Pulling out the smartphone, which he had slowly been learning to use, he sent a short text to Davina, simply reading, 'I'm outside'. The airport was only a short ride away but Danny wanted to get up before they lost the light.
