Who: Henrik and Rebekah
What: sibling bonding time
When: Friday
Where: Rebekah’s place

Once Henrik had finally been allowed to leave the house, to no longer have to stay inside and be forced to do nothing but watch television, read or sleep, he’d pretty much decided that he never wanted to stay inside ever again. Except he had found that being allowed out of the house didn’t exactly equal full recovery and he was still a bit slow, a bit easy to tire out and realized that he’d need to take it easy.

So instead of running out to play at the park or get ice cream as had been the plan, Henrik had decided to simply go over to Rebekah’s house to hang out. He’d been before once or twice, but back then he had kind of resented the place, thinking Stefan was taking her away from them and he wouldn’t see her any longer, that she’d love him less. It had taken some time but he realized that wasn’t the case and really, he was worried about his sister. He knew she was going through some very difficult issues that he didn’t completely understand but Henrik hoped his being there might help out some.

He’d gotten dropped off and knocked on the door. He knew he’d hurt his other siblings when he’d left with Caroline, but he’d been so frustrated with Elijah and Kol that he hadn’t known what else to do. They kept leaving him so it had made sense in his head to leave as well.

But Rebekah hadn’t been one to leave him and he knew that deep down. “I am supposed to tell you that I’m supposed to still take it easy,” he started as soon as the door open. “And if I get short of breath that I need to rest for half an hour before doing anything again.”

And then he moved in to hug his sister because even though it might have been normal for this time for families not to live together, he did miss having her right there all the time.

“It must be because Finn didn’t to see most of us at anytime back when we used to live.” Or at least he preferred being with others who weren’t his siblings a lot. At least that was how Henrik saw it. Maybe it was the age gap between them but he’d never felt particularly close to him. Not like he did with his other siblings.

“Nik is very stubborn. All of you are. Even I am. I think it is part of being a Mikaelson. We probably got it from mother.” He remembered that Esther could be quite stubborn when she wanted to be about things. Thinking about his mother was confusing though. He hadn’t heard too much about some things that his siblings had experienced but he knew they were not happy with her, that she had tried to hurt all of them.

It was easy to think their father could do it. Mikael had been a strict, fairly uncaring man and Henrik remembered the bruises and the yelling. But Esther was another story. All he remembered from her was love.

“Why did she want to hurt all of you?”

Rebekah offered a small shrug of agreement about Finn. Her feelings towards her absent brother were complicated at best. Even when they had been human, she had never felt the closeness and comfort she had felt with the others, and the hurt of the betrayal when he had worked so hard to kill them still stung. But he was still her brother, and she had mourned his death. Not as much as Kol's, she hadn't felt that deep pain, but there had been a grief there all the same. "Finn was always the weird one of the family. Never really knew why."

She sighed slightly, wondering how to explain his question. "It is a family trait, being so stubborn," she stalled for time before deciding to just come out with it.

"She was the one who turned us into what we are. I don't know if it was her idea, or Mikael's. But she decided she didn't like what we became. That we had lived too long, that vampires as a species were wrong and against nature. That was why she did what she did. I want to think that she did love us, once, a long time ago. But, along the way, the love stopped."

It really was a family trait, the stubbornness. Henrik had a feeling it was one of those that they’d never get rid of either. “But love can’t just stop. Not a mother’s love.” Could it? It didn’t make sense to him how Esther could ever stop loving any of them. Mikael, sure. Their father was never a nice man, he was hardly a fair man, but their mom...Henrik thought she’d loved them. He felt loved by her.

“I don’t like the future.” It was twisted, everyone was hurting in it. The happiness they had seemed to be forever overshadowed by everything in the past. He didn’t know how they lived like that. He never wanted to live like that. One century of pain and happiness would be enough for him. He didn’t want one thousand years of it.

“Maybe all of the years twisted her mind or something?” It had done something to his siblings, he knew that much. It’d make sense if it did something to their mother as well.

Rebekah sighed, her face incredibly sad as she tried to figure out how to explain things to Henrik, how to tell him the truth without shattering his image of his mother. "The magic, the years that passed, so many things, that all went towards her no longer loving us. What she turned us into was an affront to nature, you've studied magic, you probably understand more about that than I do. I think maybe she stopped seeing us as her children any more."

It still hurt, more than words could ever really describe, that the woman who Rebekah had grieved for for a thousand years had hated her so much, had plotted to kill her. But she didn't want to take that memory from Henrik.

"I think when we were all human, when we were children, she did love us. She definitely loved you, and I don't want you to ever forget that, okay? Remember that." She chewed slightly on her lip with an awkward shrug. "The future has some good parts too. Stefan, for example."

Henrik nodded. He did know that they were considered an affront to nature. But they were his family and he loved them and he wouldn’t let that change. Not like it had apparently for their mother. He wanted to hate her for what she apparently had done but he couldn’t. He loved her and would probably always love her. She was his mother. He couldn’t help it.

“I don’t want to talk about it anymore.” It was a lot to take in and Henrik didn’t think he could handle anything else on top of it. Not about his family at least.

But Stefan. He didnt’ really know Stefan and he supposed he was going to need to try to do that. Even if he still resented him for taking Rebekah away. Everyone said he made Rebekah happy but Henrik didn’t think she was all that happy. “I hope he is good to you.” Because that’s what mattered the most to Henrik. And he hoped Rebekah would be happy again someday.

Rebekah nodded too, her heart breaking slightly at the sadness she could see in her little brother, and hating herself slightly for being the one to put it there. "We don't have to talk about it if you don't want to. If you have any questions at any other time, I'll always answer them honestly." She owed him that much at least, to be open with him.

She wanted to wrap her arms around him in a hug, but hesitated slightly, instead putting her hand on his back, an invitation if he wanted it.

"He is." She had a genuine smile at the thought of her husband. "We took a long time to get where we are, and things haven't always been easy, but we've made it work and I think we're stronger for coming through problems together. He's the love of my life." The only love she had had who hadn't chosen to leave her. Not like Alexander, not like Marcel. Stefan had been forced to leave, compelled by Klaus.

“That is good.” He thought it was at least. He didn’t understand that kind of love yet, hadn’t had experience with it. But if it would help make Rebekah happy then that’s what mattered the most. He offered up a smile and munched away on his cookie, not too sure what else to say about any of it, his mind still processing.

He felt like he didn’t really know his siblings all that much anymore. Maybe he didn’t, not with all they’d lived through in the last thousand years and that made him sad. They had done so much after his death, some good, a lot bad and he’d never really know what that was like. It was tough to deal with and he wasn’t entirely sure what to do with that knowledge.

“May I go read now?” Because he needed a break from all of the deep talk.

She did wish she could take away the strain of being a Mikaelson. Because Henrik didn't deserve to have to deal with all the crazy intensity that came with being one of them. He was the one they were supposed to protect from it all, given the chance to be a normal kid. But, it seemed, that dream was pretty much doomed.

"Yeah, you go on and read," she offered him a small smile. The whole house was his to make use of, and that included the comfortable sofas in the living room, if he wanted to curl up and read in there. "Do you want a drink or anything?"

She just about restrained herself from practically begging him to let her do something for him. Because that would have been for her benefit, to try to ease the guilt of being what she was and a crap older sister.

Henrik grinned at her, pulling out a book from his bag and shook his head. “That’s okay but thank you.” He knew he probably should have kept talking to her or done something that at least involved interaction between them but he needed the chance to decompress for an hour or so. And reading usually helped with that.

Once he was done that though and had time to mull over what Rebekah had said or at least push it away for a bit so he could enjoy himself again he’d seek his sister out and see what else they could do around her home. Even if it was just sit together and talk. Anything but watch the television. He really didn’t like that thing except for one or two movies. Otherwise it was loud and the stories weren’t all that interesting to him.

He curled up on the couch and settled into read, liking that it was almost as quiet at Rebekah’s place as it was at Marcel’s.

Rebekah had to suppress one small smile as she wondered just where Henrik had gotten his manners from. Elijah could put on a good show of them, but everyone knew the rest of the family, including their parents and Finn, could utterly fail when it came to the basic pleases and thank yous.

She watched him get comfortable with an affectionate look before she got up herself, tidying the kitchen a little, not making much noise but mostly keeping herself from hovering over Henrik and potentially disturbing his reading. Aphrodite came by her, brushing past her legs before wandering over to the couch and curling herself up next to Henrik, not annoying him for attention but content to just sleep in his vicinity. Rebekah often envied the cat for her simple pleasures.

Later, she hoped Henrik would want to do something, to talk, to just have some fun with his big sister so he would feel her house was a good place to be, but for now she was happy to just let him be, have his own space.
