Tonks already hadn't been having a great week.
Her mum was gone. Sure, it had been strange, at first, getting to know such a young version of her mother. But after everything that had happened... well, at least her mother had returned to somewhere a war had just ended, with most of her family still intact, although there was still plenty of aftermath to deal with. At least it was somewhere safer than here, where things just always seemed to get worse.
Remus was helpful for providing distractions, but at the same time, she needed some time to herself. Which was why she was alone this afternoon, content to curl up in her flat with a book. She'd been working on the fourth Harry Potter book for a few weeks now, and was still only halfway through it. She still wasn't sure if she was going to read the ones beyond what she had already lived through, but at this rate she probably had until Christmas to decide. This one was harder to read than the first three had been; all the parts with the false Mad-Eye made her uncomfortable, and Sirius had been in the last chapter... She had to force herself to keep turning pages.
She was so wrapped up in the first task of the Triwizard Tournament — the dragons — that she almost thought she'd imagined the first rumbling. She didn't even have time to register that it was coming from within the building before the sound was deafening. The windows shattered, and she instinctively shielded her head with her book, rolling off the couch and to the floor.
Tonks coughed, feeling dizzy. The room had filled with thick smoke. Her hip hurt, and her head throbbed; she'd hit it on something when she'd rolled to the floor. She tried to sit up, but she realized the couch had overturned on top of her. She was pinned between it and the coffee table.
She tried to summon her wand, but it didn't come. She tried to roll over and push the couch off of her without magic, but it was no use. Yelling for help seemed like the only other option, and she did, but it only made her feel dizzier, and made fighting to stay awake that much harder.
