Katherine & Hal
Talking and things!
Wednesday evening, September 25, 2013; House of Lust
PG13 (some dark themes and a little blackmail; will update if needed)/Complete

She didn't know what was going on, but she knew it was serious.

Katherine had seen Hal's note to her almost immediately and had responded just as quickly. Even over the computer screen, she could hear the sheer urgency in his tone. She didn't know what was going on, but she knew it was serious, so when he said he needed to meet with her, she wasted no time and immediately agreed.

There were so many things going on lately that she could hardly keep up with it all. Death's request for not one but two of their own to trade places with Him seemed to be a thing of the distant past, so long ago now that it couldn't quite hold a candle to everything else in it's wake. Lucifer's threats, his little gifts to people, they had everyone on edge. Those already on the receiving end rattled by their personal mementos, haunted by things from their pasts or their futures not yet lived. The rest, fearful of what may come for them. And there was Henry, that boy, in every right her best friend's son, so full of goodness and light, all of it stolen away by the demon that had overtaken him. Only a few days, but God, so much damage. She didn't want to think of just how wrecked he would be coming out of the other side of this. But at least he was home now. Safe, with Emma, where he belonged.

But right now, none of that was where Katherine's focus stood. Instead, it was on Hal and what could possibly have been this important. There were hundreds of possibilities, but she couldn't begin to guess which one was correct.

There was a knock at the door.

"And there's the answer," she muttered to herself, pushing her way towards the front of the house to open the door. "What's going on?" she asked immediately, giving him no time to small talk, a look of concern on her face.

She knew he was right. It wasn't fine, but she had to hope that it could be again, eventually. That what she was doing was worth something, that there was some kind of purpose to it. It couldn't just be this, could it?

She nodded dumbly at the idea. "Yeah, of course." were the words her mouth formed, but she didn't know if she really believed it. Could it really get easier over time? Would anything in any future meeting like this really be any different?

"I know," she said quietly, staring down at the floor beneath her feet.

She didn't know. Not really. Not how much this was killing him nor how close he was walking to the edge of uncaring. Between this, the mugging, the girl Kol had sent. That look in Alex' eyes when she wasn't entirely sure she could trust him. There was so much that had gone wrong in the last few weeks and it was building.

All this could do was keep Him contained long enough for him to warn Alex. And he would warn her. He'd tell her. Of course he'd tell her.

But not yet. Not until he was safe. Not until he could be trusted again.

"I'll call you. You know, when..." he didn't need to say any more than that and they both knew it. And god he still couldn't look at her knowing what he had just done. Knowing the things He had said to her.

Katherine didn't know what was going through his mind, how close to that proverbial and maybe literal ledge he really was, but she knew that he didn't like this situation any more than she did. She could see that written plainly across his face when she dared peek up and steal a glance. She couldn't meet his eyes, though, and she wondered when that awkwardness would go away. Because it would, she was fairly certain, it would eventually fade and this would become some kind of routine. A sick, twisted, quiet little routine that no one could know about. Quiet things hidden behind closed doors. It made her stomach turn to think of herself being used like this. She was the manipulator, never the manipulated. But now...

"I'll...be ready." The phrase, given the context, was awkward. This breech of trust, of faith, of friendship passing into...something else entirely, she wasn't sure what to make of it. She wasn't even sure she wated to make anything of it at all. Keep it strictly business when they met like this. The things He had said...that threat to turn her into something like him... that was more than enough to keep her at bay. For now.

There was another moment of that awkward silence that continued to find itself surrounding them before Katherine finally said, "You should...probably go. Regina probably won't be long." She had no idea if that was true, sometimes when her friend left to visit her boyfriend she was gone for a few hours, other times she stayed overnight. But it was a good excuse to get him to leave and maybe she could have some time to process all of this before Regina really did get home.

She was right of course, he had to go. Leave her to...whatever she had been doing and try to let her regain some sense of a normal day. His friend, and he'd done this to her, what kind of man was he that could do something like this. He found he had to hold back on being ill, just from the cruelty that came so easily to him, just by sharing a mind with a monster.

Though where Hal ended and Harry began, could anyone be really sure anymore.

"Katherine..." he said, or tried to say would be more accurate. The word seemed to be choking in his throat. He had nothing he could say to make her feel better, did he? Sorry I used you, sorry I plan to use you again? Sorry for the things he says, sorry you're just helping me gain a few more weeks. He'd blackmailed her, and was continuing to do so.

...till next time then." he told her, bowing formally before taking his leave. As soon as he was out of sight of her property though, he slumped aginst the wall, disgusted with himself.
