To say that Caroline was a chaotic mess wasn’t really all that different from usual. Her control freak tendencies had only been heightened when she’d become a vampire and usually she maintained control over herself by keeping control of her environment. Sticking to her schedule, color coding her planner, diving headfirst into whatever task she’d decided to undertake for the immediate future. And she’d been doing well, having undertaken the talent show plus work and volunteering had helped her have goals that she could work with, that she could categorize and break down into little tasks that were easily manageable with time.
Except that entire house of cards had come crashing down on her in the last day and she didn’t know how to build it all up again. First there was the worry over Stefan and just how well he was coping without alcohol as a buffer to the bloodlust, and then Vicki and her needing help with her own control, followed by learning what Elena had tried to do all of those months before and having no clue how she was supposed to help her friend with that. Caroline had sensed there was some distance between herself and her friend and hadn’t been able to pinpoint quite why that had happened, but after looking back on other hers actions around the time of the incident, Caroline had figured it out a little. She could hardly blame Elena for being wary if she was expecting that kind of reaction from her now. And coupled with her own hesitancy because of other things going through her own mind, Caroline supposed a little distance wasn’t that surprising. Though she meant to deal with that and put an end to it.
But she’d hung out with Elena the other night, hugged her friend raw and talked about the past before their lives had been turned upside down and never fully put back together again. Today, she needed to check in with Matt. See how he was doing, make sure he knew the risks with Vicki and see if she could help at all with that...and discuss the fears she’d gained from her conversation with Lexi. Maybe. Caroline was pretty sure leaving that topic of conversation to die would be preferable in her mind, but no matter what she wanted some Matt-time. He was one of the few people she could really relax around.
Which was why she was standing in front of his apartment door with sparkling cider and a box of Cheez-Its. “Matt?” she knocked, hopeful it’d be him who answered. “Are you home?”
