Who: Allison Argent, Scott McCall, Peter Vincent
What: Scott and Allison run into Peter on their way to the movies.
Where: Near Epiphany's complex
When: Early evening, Saturday the 29th
Warnings: None yet, but possibly subject to change. Definitely some feels, of course.
Status: Closed, Ongoing

After missing out on going to the movies the previous night, Allison was especially looking forward to going there tonight. Her, Scott, and popcorn in a dark room was a recipe for success. Even if you took away the popcorn and the movie it still sounded appealing. She’d tried to find excuses to be in his company for a while, now, but now that they were officially a couple once more it was easy to simply declare something ‘date night’ and just go with it. As they walked she turned her head to smile at him, linking her hand in his.

“Last night was nice,” She sighed quietly. “You were right. You’re absolutely great for chasing bad thoughts away.” Allison gave his hand a gentle squeeze. She wasn’t lying. In spite of still being haunted by nearly losing her life to Peter when he was a vampire, being near Scott always seemed to leave her feeling safer. She thought that he was wonderful in that way.

“Still, I could really use a funny movie.” She nodded with a smile. Movies were second to Scott when it came to the chasing away of bad thoughts, but they still worked for a short time. It was nice, she thought, to sit and watch a screen, effectively removing herself from her own world and placing her in another, and not in the creepy way that the Seal did. For a while, she’d be laughing and smiling and not thinking about the things that went bump in the night. She liked the idea of that.

Once he’d left the apartment that first time a few days ago, he found it hard to go back. It was too still, too quiet. Too lonely. Not that he was any more ready to face people, but shutting out the world with walls and doors and curtained windows only shut him in with himself, and that was worse. So he’d taken to trading off; going outside and wandering aimlessly around the neighbourhood until he couldn’t take the noise and the people, then returning to the flat and laying still, staring at the walls for hours sometimes, trying so hard not to think anymore. When he couldn’t stand his own company any longer, the cycle started again.

He’d gone back to that little park again today, and sat on the swing for ages, pushing himself back and forth a bit with his toe. Some kids had shown up after a time though, and he’d made himself move on. It was only when the sun started getting low in the sky that he really took stock of where he was and started heading back to Piffy’s complex. He didn’t like being caught outside after dark lately. He used to like nighttime, but now...

He hadn’t meant to cross paths with them. He just looked up and stopped short; there they were, about twenty feet away and coming towards him, Allison and Scott. He closed his eyes, mouthing a curse. This was the second time he’d run into someone he’d attacked in just the three days since leaving that goddamn flat. Not that it was that unexpected; Lawrence wasn’t exactly an enormous city, and Piffy’s complex was in an area the displaced tended to frequent. Already he could feel his hands starting to shake, tension gnawing at his insides. He froze up, uncertain of what to do, and his hesitation cost him the chance of evading bumping into them.

Things had, for a short while, been in an awkward sort of inbetween stage between Scott and Allison. Back home, with everything the way it was, Allison had broken up with him. And Scott was okay with that, because he would wait for her. Because he knew, deep down, that they were meant to be together. So waiting? It wasn't a big deal. But then he ended up here and she was one of the few people he actually knew and that made him pull towards her a little more than he already did naturally. Nevermind the tension. It was all very weird and awkward and he didn't even really know hat they were until allison asked, point-blank. They talked it over and here they were, a couple again, and Scott couldn't contain he happiness that created.

So with their date night a fail last night because, honestly, they had both just sort of lost time somewhere along through the day, they resurrected it for tonight. "It was," he nodded his agreement to her statement about last night, smiling as they walked hand-in-hand down the street. Had he known Allison to be out by herself right now, he probably would have been nervous about it, but being with her meant he knew she was safe from whatever would happen now. He was still a little iffy about her leaving the complex alone, but he tried to keep it contained. He didn't want to smother her or something, he just sort of worried. And she did have a bit of a trouble magnet sitting in her back pocket or something, so he felt this worry was completely warranted. "Funny is always good. Can't ever go wrong with funny."

Scott was about to speak up again when something else caught his attention. A scent. A familiar one. And then his eyes caught up with his nose and he saw Peter at a standstill on the sidewalk, coming from the other direction, walking towards them. Instinctively, without even realizing it, Scott shifted slightly more in front of Allison, his hand gripping hers a little tighter. He wasn't sure what to do, what to say. He hadn't talked to Peter all that much before, but he hadn't talked to him at all since he had been turned human again. So instead, he just kept his eyes locked on him and kept that protective stance between him and Allison, deciding to take his cue from her on how to react.

Allison noticed Scott’s reaction before she knew what had triggered it. She saw him stiffen slightly in posture and step slightly in front of her, his grip on her hand going from a gentle squeeze to almost tense. Allison’s eyebrows wrinkled slightly and her gaze shifted to where she Scott looking. That was when she realized that Peter Vincent was standing right in front of them. Her smile faded in an instant. She reminded herself that he was a human being, someone who wasn’t physically capable of what he’d done to her as a vampire, but it didn’t do much good. Allison clammed up a bit, her jaw dropping open just slightly. His presence had her so stunned that she couldn’t even manage to mentally scold herself for not being tougher.

Though it seemed like an eternity had passed, it was only seconds. Allison opened her mouth to speak, but could only manage something that came out that was near a whisper. “Hi, Peter.” It was meek, and by now she did have the focus to scold herself for coming across as being small and scared. She stood up a little taller, self-consciously patting the gauze bandage on her neck with her free hand without much thought. It was as if seeing him had reminded her that it was there, not that she needed a reminder.

Thanks to Kol’s intervention, Allison’s nights were nightmare-free. In her waking hours, though, she still had the occasional flashback. She could see all of the grisly details - Her struggle, his almost deformed looking mouth laced with sharp teeth... Seeing Peter standing there, although human, did nothing to suppress those memories. Most of her effort, now, was directed towards looking casual and okay and not at all scared. It wasn’t working so well.

Scott saw him first, and when he moved to shield Allison, it broke Peter out of his paralysis. He stepped back, lowering his eyes, but he didn't run. He wasn't sure if it would make things better or worse, so he'd wait. He chanced the quickest glance at their faces, saw the fear in Allison's eyes, and it felt like everything in him turned to concrete, weighing him down and keeping him from moving.

Then Allison spoke his name. He looked up, and his eyes were drawn to her hand at her throat, the thick bandage on her neck. He couldn't hold back the flinch this time. Looking back down at the ground, he tried to find his voice. He had to apologize, at the very least. Not just to Allison, but to Scott as well. The kid had pursued him across half the city that night before Peter - before the vampire, had knocked him out. He'd hurt both of them. He'd thought it a fine game.

He stood there for a long moment, eyes lowered, mouth opening and closing. "Hi," he finally managed to whisper back, but that was all. His throat locked up. He could remember the taste of her blood, the feel of her skin under his fangs. He didn't want to - just thinking about it made his stomach turn - but it was stuck in his mind. Peter tried to hold back a whimper and nearly choked on it, gasping in a breath. He couldn't look at her. He stumbled back another step, putting more distance between them.

Scott could tell without even looking at her that Allison was clamming up. He could hear her heart beating faster, smell that specific scent that fear gave off coming from her. He still wasn't sure what to do, if he should make a move or not. This was...awkward to say the very least. And tense. He didn't like any part of it. Allison's near-whisper didn't add to his favoring of this situation. But, he decided, if Peter wasn't going to react badly, neither would he. He could at least keep it together that much, even if it was more for Allison's sake than anything else.

Scott could see the uncertainty in Peter, in the way he stood, the way he stepped back, the meek sort of sound to his voice. It made him stop and think about everything he'd been through recently and how he must be feeling at that point. And he kind of felt bad for the guy. He hadn't wanted all this, it had just sort of...happened. One thing leading to another leading to destruction. He bit his lip and, Allison's hand still firmly in his own, he squeezed gently to remind her he was with her, before walking a little closer to him. "She doesn't blame you, you know?"

She cleared her throat and swallowed, trying to get rid of the lump in her throat and better enable her to speak. Allison knew she couldn’t constantly rely on Scott to relay messages to Peter. Besides, if they really wanted to reassure Peter that she didn’t blame him or hold him responsible she would have to be the one conveying the message.

“It’s true.” She said in a slightly louder voice than the one she’d used to greet him. Allison focused on not touching her bandage or bringing it to any further attention. “I don’t blame you at all. I blame Jerry for obvious reasons. I blame myself for staying out after dark when there were vampires all around. You weren’t yourself.” She sighed a little. “Now you are, though. How are you adjusting?”

Allison seemed much braver, but kept her hand in Scott’s. He was her anchor, right then. He was keeping her from losing her bravery. She felt like she had to hold his hand or she’d turn into a trembling mess and she’d already embarrassed herself with meek behavior.

Even as Scott stepped closer, Peter was still inching back. He couldn't help it, wanting the distance as much for himself as out of respect for Allison. And he heard what they were saying, he did, but it didn't make him feel any better. If anything it brought on another little wave of guilt. Before Allison could even finish speaking he was shaking his head emphatically. "Don't," he whispered, far too quiet for human ears - though with Scott's abilities, no doubt he'd caught it at least. But there were some things he needed to say, despite how inadequate they were. Eyes still lowered, he tried to pick his voice up a little - his words were mainly for Allison.

"Don't do that. Blame yourself. Not your fault." He sighed, closing his eyes. His thoughts were such a mess anymore, conflicting and shifting and giving him just a constant headache. He remembered hurting her, remembered loving it then, and he hated it now. It was so fucking hard to reconcile the memories from that time with his human self. He tried to shove it back; he could wait until he'd retreated to his hiding place at Piffy's complex to fall apart again.

"I'm sorry," he said, miserable and quiet. "I didn't mean to..." he trailed off, the words hanging in the air. He couldn't say it. Awkwardly, he switched gears mid-apology. "Didn't mean to run into you two. I was just out for a walk." The words were feeble and it was pretty obvious that wasn't what he'd intended to say, though they were no less true.

Scott kept his hand in Allison's own. He wouldn't let go unless she did. He was okay with being her anchor. She was usually so strong on her own, but this was different. She needed him and he would be there for her.

He watched as Peter continued to inch back away from them. He wasn't quite sure why. Was he afraid Scott would do something? The thought caused him to frown slightly, but he didn't bother commenting on it. He was mostly just listening to the exchange between the other two.

"He's right, you know," Scott said, his attention turning to Allison for a moment, "You shouldn't blame yourself, but--" and he was look at Peter again. "you shouldn't either. It's...you never would have done anything like that if you were really yourself." The words he spoke were, in his eyes, true, but still sort of hard to say. The separation of the event and who Peter was then versus who he was now was sort of hard to keep in mind. But Scott was nothing less than the epitome of the good guy of a thousand second chances.

Allison simply nodded at the two insisting that she shouldn’t blame herself. She wasn’t going to disagree in a situation like this even if she did still blame herself for being reckless that night she was attacked. She was just glad that she didn’t have any blood relatives around to scold her for her mistakes. Allison could practically hear Kate, her father, Gerard, even her mother in her mind all reminding her of the stupid mistake that had almost cost her her life. At least Scott was around to try and convince her that she had nothing to blame herself for.

“It’s not the biggest city in the world,” Allison smiled faintly at Peter. “It won’t be the last time we run into each other.” She looked at her feet for just a moment before looking back up to Peter. Honestly, she didn’t really know what to say. She wanted to keep insisting that it wasn’t his fault, but imagined that the message would get old fast especially considering that he didn’t seem like he was about to believe it.

Objectively, Peter knew Scott was right. He would never have willingly hurt anyone like that. Memory was a tricky, bitchy mistress though, trying to sort out what was him and what was just the monster. And either way... it was still his own fault that he'd been turned.

He still hardly dared look at them, even though it was pretty clear at this point that neither of them were feeling at all aggressive towards him. He still couldn't fathom it. He'd seen some of the things people had talked about before, when he was still the monster. The anger and the hurt he'd caused wouldn't just go away. But no one had challenged or threatened him at all since. At least, not where he could see. But that didn't make interaction any easier.

He had to relearn how to do this though, because Allison was right; he would run into them again. All of the survivors, the people who'd been affected by what he'd become... there was no way he wouldn't run into them at some point or another, unless the Seal took them or him back. He knew there was no making things right again, no making it up to them. The least he could do was try to face them. He wasn't ready for it yet though. Many of them might not be either. "Still," he said softly, "I'm sorry. I... I don't want to make things any worse for you." He swayed a bit, uncertain if he should get out of their way or what.

Scott bit the inside of his cheek. This was just getting more and more awkward with every minute that ticked by. None of them really seemed to know what to say or do, here, and one of them needed to take control of the situation before they ended up standing on some side street forever. He wouldn't expect Allison to, and it was pretty obvious Peter wasn't in the right mind to do it either, so that responsibility was going to fall to him. Now, to figure out how to do that, exactly.

"She's right, and I mean, I don't think you're really making anything worse, you know?" He looked at Allison, as if to double-check that he was right in that thought. "It's not like you were seeking us out or something, and...you, you gotta face it, you know? Both of you." he looked between them, before looking at Peter again. "I mean, don't rush it, that'd just make it worse in the end, right? But...nobody can hide forever."

Scott was right and Allison knew it. Nobody could hide forever. While she was pretty collected and believed herself to be handling herself well, she was still a little shaky on the inside. She had to confront her fears stemming from that night. That didn’t mean confronting Peter. He wasn’t the monster he had been that night, but his human self. It would be meaningless and only stir up trouble. She had a feeling that the man couldn’t take much more guilt before he snapped from the weight of all of it. Instead, Allison knew she had to focus on smoothing out the troubles. Gently, not in a confrontational way.

“I have a feeling things are getting better from here on out.” She smiled tentatively, still not exactly a ray of sunshine. A brush with death was a brush with death. It would have taken a lot out of anyone. She sometimes had to remind herself that she was doing well to combat the feelings of shame and weakness, but generally she knew that she was doing better. It was apparent that Scott was doing better. Peter... Well, she could only hope the same for him.
