Mick St. John is a delicate flower ([info]delicatemick) wrote in [info]wariscoming,

Entry tags:beth turner, mick st john

Who: Beth Turner and Mick St. John
What: Meeting to discuss all that Mick has to look forward to in his future.
When: Backdated slightly to after their communications on the boards, late afternoon.
Where: Mick’s apartment
Warnings: None, really, but if any reasons for warnings pop up I’ll edit this right quick.

Coffee. That was his only task for the day. He didn’t even have a shift at the MedBay until much later. The coffee wasn’t even for him, but to have ready for Beth when she came to his apartment. He’d stopped at a coffee and donuts place near the complex. It was no Starbucks, but Mick was pinching pennies at the moment. He had seen people coming and going to and from this particular place, so he knew the coffee couldn’t have been all that bad. It did matter to him. When Beth showed up at his door he didn’t want to produce a cup of disgusting brown sludge. This meeting had to begin on a good note.

It wasn’t the fact that Beth had showed up that left Mick feeling slightly uneasy and nervous, but rather the fact that she had come from a later time than he had and therefore knew all sorts of things that Mick did not. He wasn’t paranoid or anything, he just liked to know what was going on in a situation before diving into it headfirst. Sometimes he could be a bit of a control freak, only wanting to pursue a case his way under his circumstances. Lacking knowledge always made him a little wary about everything. Still, this was his chance to learn a little more about his future. He’d listen to whatever Beth was comfortable telling him.

That was not to say that this was a cut and dry attempt to pry knowledge from Beth. There was much more to the meeting than that. He wanted to finally meet adult Beth Turner whom he had rescued so many years ago from Coraline, the woman who had turned him into a vampire.

He’d kept tabs on her. Mick had tried to do it in a way that wasn’t borderline stalking. He thought of it as his responsibility to make sure she was safe. Weren’t there certain cultures that believed you were responsible for lives you saved? If that was true, Mick was responsible for a good many more lives than just Beth’s, but for some reason she was the only one he watched closely. He’d seen her grow into a lovely young woman and start to develop her career in investigative journalism. She was different, but still the same in so many ways. The same cornsilk blonde hair, the same blue eyes, and the same spirit.

He realized that he’d gotten caught up in his thoughts as the man behind the counter eyed him and asked if he was alright. Mick simply nodded, a half-smile forced onto his face, and he took the foam cup of coffee, making his way back to the complex. He took the elevator up to his floor and walked into his apartment with the intent of picking up before Beth arrived, but realized that decorations and personal belongings were pretty sparse. He hadn’t really made much of an effort to make the place homey. He hoped it wasn’t too off-putting a scenario for talk over coffee.

It wasn't a date. It was emphatically not a date. No matter how many times Beth told herself that—told herself that this was something much more awkward than any first date could hope to be—she couldn't quite shake the nervous jitters.

It wasn't that she had designs on starting something. She had a Mick waiting for her at home and getting into all the implications about differing timelines just made her head hurt. No, it was that she'd already mentioned that, in his future, they were close. In her mind, that led to a whole mess of expectations, more than their usual situation. She had to be something special to manage to get past the usual walls, the vampire thing, and everything else that had been thrown at the pair of them, right? But she wasn't. She was just... Beth. Persistent, stubborn Beth Turner, capable of wearing down anyone, given the right motivation, but for some reason, she couldn't entirely shake the idea that there were expectations this time around. Expectations that she would probably fail to meet, because expectations and her had never quite mixed.

So, jitters.

She'd said an hour; in reality, it was closer to an hour and ten when she knocked on his door, after she'd lost track in front of the mirror, trying to scrape together a presentable look from ill-fitting clothing that she as of yet lacked the funds to replace. In the end, it had only half-worked, something she tried her hardest not to think about too terribly much as she shifted her weight from foot to foot, only barely resisting the impatient urge to knock again.

Though Mick would never own up to it, he had been watching the clock. It wasn’t because he was obsessed with others’ punctuality, but rather because he’d been looking forward to the meeting. Granted, he didn’t look or act like a little kid waiting for Santa Claus to arrive, but it was something he’d been looking forward to nonetheless. When he heard the knock on his apartment door he made his way over and opened it without so much as a ‘who is it?’. He gave Beth a faint but still welcoming smile.

“Hey,” His smile broadened slightly as he greeted her. Mick stepped to the side just slightly to give her space to enter the apartment. He reached over to a small table that stood next to the door for her coffee and held it out for her. “Black. I hope it’s okay.” He’d silently scolded himself for not asking how she took her coffee. With nothing like sugar or milk in his pantry, there was little he could do to remedy things if he’d gotten it wrong.

There were a few places to sit in his apartment. Thankfully, it had come with basic furnishings or the apartment would have been mostly bare. Mick hadn’t accumulated enough wealth to do much of anything in Lawrence. With his private investigation business just budding, he lived off of what he made from working at the MedBay. First and foremost he was saving for a freezer to sleep in. Everything else came after that. Maybe he’d be able to bribe someone into supplying blood and he wouldn’t have to rely on his co-worker Martha’s charitable nature anymore. It felt a little strange relying directly on humans for blood. It felt a little too much like Josef’s situation with his freshies.

“It’s good to see you.” In this case the statement wasn’t just an empty pleasantry. Mick really was glad to see Beth even if he was a little nervous about their meeting. “Take a seat anywhere.” He remained standing for the moment, waiting to see where Beth would sit, first.

"Hey." Though quiet, it came with a genuine, if somewhat uncertain, smile as she slipped past him into the apartment. It wasn't as if Miss Manners had a set of guidelines for what to do if the guy you were dating suddenly had no memory of the entire relationship; it meant she floundered, just a little, not sure what to do. Was a handshake appropriate? Hell if she knew. Her normal definitely wasn't Mick's normal, and she was left at a loss for how to make those two meet up in a way that wasn't wholly uncomfortable.

The coffee, at least, saved her from that for the moment. She accepted it gratefully with a quick shake of her head. "Black's more than fine, thank you." It wasn't her usual save for when she was stressed, but it was the safe route, and Beth was more than willing to take pity on him by not pointing that out. Coffee—or any of the condiments for it—certainly wasn't on his usual shopping list.

She moved further into the apartment, heading toward the couch only to pause and turn back toward Mick. "Okay. I'm just going to say it. I feel like I owe you an apology in advance. Because this whole thing is..." She trailed off, waving one hand in indication of everything and nothing. "I'm used to how things are at home for me, so if I forget and make things any weirder than they already are, I'm sorry. I don't mean to, I promise. It's just..." Awkward. There was that word again. She took a deep breath, letting it out slowly before pushing a smile.

"Maybe we should start at the beginning. Formal introductions and all. Hi, I'm Beth." It was almost joking, and she stuck out a hand. If you couldn't beat the awkward, might as well confront it.

It came as a bit of a relief knowing that he wasn’t the only one who felt awkward in that particular situation. It didn’t really solve anything, but it was reassuring to Mick nonetheless. The two of them were alone with no one else present to act as a buffer, but Mick still didn’t see the situation as being a bad decision. He’d looked forward to seeing Beth and she was finally right there in front of him. Most importantly, she knew his secret and hadn’t been completely repulsed by it. That gave him some hope.

Once she’d sat down on his couch, Mick took a seat, as well. Normally he didn’t put so much thought into where to sit, but this was not a normal circumstance. He gave her a bit of distance, but not so much that she’d assume he was avoiding her.

He smiled when she offered her hand and introduced herself. It seemed like the right way to approach something so very weird. The seal created all sorts of awkwardness. It did no good to deny it or walk on eggshells in response to it. Mick took her hand and shook it with a grin. “Mick St. John. Pleased to meet you.”

It suddenly hit Mick that, even though he had numerous questions, he had no idea where to start. Not even the slightest. He opened his mouth to speak one or two times with nothing coming out. Finally, he settled on something that could probably be considered a neutral topic. “Have you settled in yet?”

If she squeezed Mick's hand a moment more than necessary before retreating, it was probably something best not remarked on.

Beth waited until he joined her before she truly got comfortable, settling back and drawing one knee up so that she was half-turned in his direction. It might not have been the wholly relaxed of normal circumstances, but it was a step in the right direction. The fish-out-of-water question prompted a quiet laugh and a quick nod. "As much as I can in a few days. I've got my tacky jewelry–" Here, she toyed with the anti-possession charm that she'd been warned not to take off, dangling it between two fingers to show him. "–I know where the coffee maker is, and I've got a couple things to wear. Not a bad start."

She bought herself a moment, sipping at the coffee (and humming her appreciation; wherever he'd gone, it was good coffee) before she settled the cup against her knee. There were a million pleasantries they could have exchanged, but small-talk wasn't exactly Beth's forte, not when she valued directness above almost all else. Her smile was gentle, meant to take any potential bluntness out of her next words. "We both know you didn't invite me down here entirely to make sure I was settling in," she began, fixing him with a steady look. "I'm an open book, Mick. What do you want to know?"

Though it wasn’t the first time it had crossed his mind, Mick found himself wondering just how close he was to Beth in the future. He had a million questions he wasn’t sure how to ask. He wasn’t sure if certain questions should have been asked. Every action had a reaction that came with it, even an action as simple as an inquiry. If they had something, Mick certainly didn’t want to spoil it.

“That’s better than I handled my arrival. I signed up to work at the MedBay and was caught sneaking blood by a teenage girl.” He was able to smirk at the memory in spite of how terrified he’d been when it had first happened. “Luckily, she was remarkably level-headed. I wasn’t her first vampire...”

“How did we wind up being close when you found out what I was?” He eyed her curiously. It was an idea that puzzled him. Yes, Beth was a good person with a good heart, but even he hadn’t fully accepted what he was. How another person could do that was amazing and hard to believe.

"After a certain point, you kind of have to learn to just... roll with the weirdness in your life. I mean, this is some sci-fi levels of weirdness, but it's the same concept, really. The only other option is to bury your head in the sand, and that never works out well," Beth admitted, one shoulder raising in a too-casual shrug. As much as finding out vampires existed had screwed with her head once upon a time, she was the sort to confront things head-on, not hide behind pretty lies. Transdimensional kidnapping was still far above her paygrade, but at least she could take comfort in having a familiar face around. Her nose wrinkled, and she scoffed out a quiet laugh. "I'm having trouble picturing you getting caught. You're practically the king of sneaking around." To the point that she often joked about sticking bells on him.

His question didn't exactly surprise her. "Well, there was that whole getting nippy thing I mentioned," she started, the words coming with a sly smirk as she held up her wrist. The scars had long since faded, only barely visible if one knew to look. She shook her head. "No, it was... I don't know. It took me awhile to process everything and every time I started to find my footing again, there was some new bit of information to absorb. 'Vampires among us' isn't exactly the sort of thing you expect outside of teen-lit, you know? But my instincts are solid, and when the vampire in question has this funny habit of saving your life, you can't exactly write them off because of the immortal, blood-drinking thing. Doing that never even crossed my mind. You're... just Mick."

“Hey,” He cracked a smile, letting out a quiet chuckle. “I think I’ve done a pretty good job with keeping the vampire thing under wraps. I’m still the king of sneaking around.” Mick shifted in his seat slightly to turn so that he faced her more directly. “Said teenage girl was just... Clever.” He smiled a little. He was lucky that it had been Elena that had found him and not one of the displaced who were petrified of vampires. Things would have been a disaster had that been the case. “And I still kind of have to keep it under wraps. I’m working part time in the medbay and I think people might be hesitant to visit if they knew a vampire was working there.”

He tilted his head, curiously eyeing the scars that had almost disappeared. Part of him wanted every last detail, but a bigger part was convinced that it was best not to press for more. Mick didn’t like the idea that he’d bitten Beth, but the fact that she seemed okay with it almost soothed his worries. How she could see him not as a monster but as a friend of sorts puzzled the hell out of him, but he was incredibly glad for it. Now he knew he had a closeness with her to look forward to once the Seal decided to send him back to Los Angeles.

“Do you know any other vampires?” It was his vague way of trying to find out if she knew the woman who had kidnapped her when she was much younger really was a monster and in the literal sense of the word. Perhaps she’d found out about Josef, as well. He thought that it was an appropriate question. He didn’t want to tell her too much or ruin any of his friends’ secret identities.

"Still. You got pinched by a teenage girl, Mick. Smooth. Very smooth," Beth laughed, a little good-natured teasing. She ducked her head to hide a smile. "I'm having trouble picturing you doing anything medical. I mean, I know you've done it before, it's just... you're a PI. That's worlds away from patching people up." But it was information she filed away in case of emergencies; at the very least, if she ended up in need of doctoring, it was somewhat less pushy to seek him out in a professional capacity.

She offered her wrist out without hesitation, permission given to inspect, if that was what he wanted. "You took a case for the DA's office, a witness gone missing. It ended in a car explosion and a several mile hike through the desert during the day," she explained without prompting; in his position, Beth knew she would have been demanding details, and he certainly hadn't said anything to indicate that she should keep quiet. "They told me you were dead. When I got the call that you'd holed up somewhere safe..." She trailed off with a quick shake of her head. "You tried to tell me to get lost, but there was nothing I wouldn't have done to keep you alive." She hadn't understood it at the time, and had been unwilling to admit it to herself for longer after, but with the benefit of hindsight, she could pinpoint that moment as the one where she'd made her choice. Even with their friendship so new, a world without Mick in it was one she hadn't wanted to contemplate.

"More than I care to know sometimes," she said after a moment of consideration, stretching her legs out in front of herself. "You introduced me to Guillermo, Josef and Logan. They're pretty good people, all things considered." Beth may not have approved of Josef's methods for dealing with problems, but after that photographer, she could hardly cast stones there. She bit her lip for a second longer before adding, in a softer tone, "I'm not exactly Coraline's biggest fan, though. I'm sure you understand why."

He gave a sheepish smile as she playfully jabbed at him for having been caught by a teenaged girl. It seemed like a joke that would last, one of those embarrassing stories that friends told good-naturedly whenever they were reminded of it. Since it didn’t have an awful ending, Mick had decided he could stand a few retellings of the tale.

Mick’s smile faded just slightly as Beth elaborated on the details of how he had bitten her. What a story. He could imagine the desert heat, the sun beating down on him mercilessly with no way for him to properly recharge. She’d thought he was dead. He’d probably thought that death was inevitable. Somehow, though, she’d saved his life. Mick was really beginning to better grasp the bond between the two of them. It was no wonder they had wound up close to one another. Even though he hadn’t lived those experiences yet, he was feeling grateful for Beth’s actions.

“Well, just like with humans you have the good and the bad. Most of us are somewhere in between.” He felt a heaviness in his stomach when she brought up Coraline. “That’s something that I can most definitely understand. I’m not a fan, either.” Mick averted his eyes to the floor for a moment before looking back up to Beth. “So you know the story. Her story, mine, and how it involved you.”

"The good, the bad, the geeky, the far too suave, and all the shades of gray in the middle ground. Believe me, that wasn't judgement. I just..." Here, Beth took a breath, letting it out slowly as she shook her head. "I've recently become aware that things are a lot more complicated in your world than you ever let on," was what she finally settled on, choosing her words carefully. Back home, there were a lot of things that needed to be worked out; right then, she was trying not to borrow trouble with a Mick who hadn't lived through any of it.

Her smile was a little grim. "Unfortunately. I know she kidnapped me when I was a child to try to manipulate you, same as I know you're the one who rescued me. I know you've spent the last twenty-three years watching my back out of some misplaced sense of guilt, just in case." Beth dropped her free hand to cover his for a quick, reassuring squeeze. "I also know I don't blame you for any of it. She's gone. For good this time, I hope. Right now, that's good enough for me."

Mick smirked a little. “I like your phrasing better than mine. Suitable.” It was complicated, for sure, but he was glad that she was in on his secret. After what she’d been put through so early in her life she deserved a better explanation of what he and Coraline truly were. Beth was a remarkable person, so resilient and open minded, and Mick knew it. No one wanted to be in Lawrence. No one wanted to be there at what was supposed to be the end of the world. Still, Mick was glad that the Seal had pulled Beth through. He wasn’t so alone anymore.

He gave a small smile when she squeezed his hand. She’d hit the nail on the head with her recollection of what had happened to her as a child and also with his actions afterward. Mick had thought it would be strange letting her in on everything, but she seemed to be handling it well.

His eyebrows wrinkled slightly at her wording. For good this time. “This time?” He asked. Had he not done a good enough job the first time? Fire seemed like a pretty foolproof way to bring an end to Coraline.

"You're fond of saying my involvement with you is... well, a lot of things. Difficult, dangerous, complicated. Inadvisable, at one point." She made a face at the idea, caught somewhere between amusement and exasperation at the idea. "There's been more thrown at me in the last couple weeks than there's been in the last few months. But I'm handling it." To an extent, at least; Beth was all about honesty, and the breaking point for her had been being kept out, yet again, from a big part of his life. She decided it was better not to bring that up for the moment.

"She's like a bad penny. Has a funny way of turning up again, even when she should be dead." Beth herself had no idea how Coraline could have possibly escaped. By Mick's retelling of it, there shouldn't have been any way for Coraline to survive. "We've met. It went over about as well as you'd expect. Not exactly my finest moment," she admitted, slouching down ever so slightly.

“That’s why I’m reluctant to get anyone else involved in my business.” Mick said, very seriously. He paused for a moment, just thinking about it. There wasn’t just one reason why he let so few people in on his secret. It went beyond his own repulsion at what he’d become. Mick recognized that his life was dangerous, far more dangerous than that of your average private investigator. Bad people seemed to have a fondness for using loved ones as leverage. Not only that, he imagine that, with Beth being the way she was, she would only be too eager to be by his side in difficult situations either because she cared or because she was chasing a good story. Knowing that Beth was on the inside at the time she came from, though, made him feel surprisingly at ease. She was safe, after all, and he wasn’t about to let harm come to her while in Lawrence.

“I wouldn’t have expected it to go well.” He shook his head a little. “I imagine that I was less than thrilled, too.” Death was supposed to be a permanent thing. Mick was more than a little disappointed that it hadn’t seemed to stick in Coraline’s case. He wished that he could have honestly claimed killing her in the fire had been a difficult task for him. He had loved her, once upon a time. Still, her true nature had ruined whatever bond he’d thought he’d had with her. Her desperate attempt to bring him back by turning a child had been the last straw.

"You didn't get me involved. I found out about it and kept shoving my nose in uninvited until you finally figured out that it was easier to work with me and be able to keep an eye on me instead of making me sneak around and get into trouble without you. I'm told it's a flaw," Beth was quick to say, only half-joking and completely unbothered by the idea. She knew she was headstrong and stubborn, and that those two traits meant she came off as abrasive more often than not. She accepted that, and tended to think that anyone who didn't like it could leave her alone.

She made a face, almost wincing. "Let's just say I got a first-hand look at exactly how crazy she's capable of driving you," Beth said slowly. None of them had behaved well; it might have been understandable, but it still left a bitter taste in her mouth. "She manipulated the both of us. Staged a case that mirrored how she died while inserting herself into both our lives as a photographer with an air-tight alias. I guess she thought she could win you back that way. I don't know." She shrugged helplessly. "All I know is I was glad to hear she was gone. Hopefully this time, she'll stay gone."
