Entry tags:emma swan, henry mills, snow white/mary margaret

Who: Snow White & OPEN
What: Decidedly lost and searching for some help
When: Tuesday, late evening
Where: Unknown (to her), on a sidewalk
Warnings: None.
Status: In Progress

"James, Emma." Oh God, Emma. Snow's heart skipped a beat when she felt the fine mist of the spell dissolve away from them, only instead of strong, comforting arms around her shoulders, she felt bare.

Alone.

Snow stumbled back a step, catching her heel on the curb and fell to the ground only to find herself staring out at an empty unfamiliar street.

"No," she whispered, chest seizing on the word. Her breathing was short and pained as she struggled back to her feet. This wasn't right. This couldn't be right. They had been so close, so close to everything being the way it should "No. No, this isn't fair."

Hadn't they suffered enough? Hadn't they all suffered more than enough for things to get better? Finally? Snow pressed her lips together until they hurt, hugging herself because there was no one else there to do it for her. No one. Snow once thought optimism was its own good luck. If you wanted something and believed in it hard enough, you could have it. Every fairy tale had a happy ending.

Except, apparently, hers.

It was with bitterness that she could acknowledge this time she got to keep her memories intact. But those memories weren't serving her well now. From the looks of things, nothing short of a miracle was going to help her here.

A miracle or a police station. There was only one way she was going to find out where she was, and that was to find someone who could tell her. She had to start small and then work her way up to the big picture. Whatever that big picture turned out to be.

Henry had been heading back from the library, making his way to Zatanna's house. Or well, it really wasn't the magician's anymore since she had been sent back home. Now it was Eddie, his and Emma's and eventually baby Swan's. Which was why he had even more books about babies and being a great sibling and everything else under the sun he could think of to read in order to help Emma with his sister when she was born. With how the boards had exploded he'd decided it was time to head back early, pretty sure his mom was freaking out about him not already being indoors. He sent a quick text to let her know he was on his way home and which way he was heading just in case anything crazy happened. Clearly upgrading from walkie talkies hadn't been the worst idea.

He had crossed through the park and was heading up the sidewalk when he stopped dead in his tracks, seeing an all too familiar face. Part of Henry wanted to run right to her, but he knew from being in Lawrence for awhile that she could be the facetwin of Mary Margaret and the last thing he wanted to do was freak her out. But what if it was her? What if the Seal had finally done something nice. It was possible. After all it had sent him to Emma when she most needed him, and with the ghosts probably leaving any day now, Henry had a feeling his mom would need something else to life her spirits.

Plus, it wouldn't hurt to call out to her, right? Even if she was just a face twin then he should help her find her way!

"Ms. Blanchard?"

Please oh please let it be her.

"What-Henry?" Snow staggered to a halt, one hand flying to her mouth as she caught sight of Henry coming toward her. Henry who had fallen unconscious not even a day before. Henry who could have died and she wouldn't have known until someone had called her. He was here.

She didn't hesitate. How could she? How could she hesitate when it was her grandson right there and alive? The impossibility of it didn't even bother her in the face of someone so familiar and dear.

She ran to him without any other thought but being able to touch him and reaffirm that he was here. Right. Right. Here.

"Henry?" She froze mid-fall, bouncing on her heels in a crouch before him, hands splayed out but not yet touching. Her hands were shaking too much to touch. "Henry, you're all right."

Henry didn't hesitate for a moment, throwing himself right at her so that he could wrap her tightly in a hug. "It is you!"

He almost couldn't believe his luck, but weren't they due for some good luck now? Especially since Regina wasn't around to screw with them all the time? He kept holding onto her, not wanting the hug to end in case she suddenly disappeared.

"Mom is going to do that thing where she's really excited but tries to hold it all in because she doesn't get emotions all that well, but she'll probably hug you a lot when she sees you!" There was so much he could tell her, but he wasn't sure what she knew and he didn't want to confuse her any more than just arriving in Lawrence could do to people.

Snow swayed but stayed up, clutching Henry as close as she could get him. They had always been close. It wasn't a secret, he had always been one of her favorite students, but now things ran so, so much deeper. He was blood. He was family, more so than she ever could have dreamed possible.

"Oh Henry, I'm so glad you're all right. I was so-" Her words died out at his declaration. And it hit her. They were somewhere new. They were some place new but still together, even though Henry must have been here longer. How else would he know that?

And why was he so surprised?

"Emma is here too?" Snow reached out and fanned her fingers through Henry's hair, pushing it back from his face. "We should get you home then."

What was it with moms and grandma's and that hair move? He tried not to make a face at it, but he was getting to that stage where he wasn't a little kid anymore and the movement made him pause. But part of him was still so happy to have her there that he didn't say anything about it and just kept smiling. "She is! And so is Ruby. And two Belles. One is from our world and the other is another Belle."

He probably shouldn't say anything about how he preferred one Belle over the other, especially not to his grandmother. He paused again, wondering if Mary Margaret knew that fact. Ruby had slowly began to remember things because of how magic existed in this world and he wondered if it would be the same for his grandmother.

"We can go to our house! We have a house! It's not just our house. Eddie lives there too. He looks a little different sometimes but he's really awesome and you'll probably love him." He pulled back completely from her and had to look around for a moment to get his bearings. He could get her home and then watch Emma and her reunite and everything would be right with the world. Even if Graham was going to leave again.

"Do you want to come to our house?"

"Two?" Snow didn't have to feign the wide-eyed look because honestly, two? She wasn't entirely sure she knew one Belle, but if they made Henry happy, who was she to question it? The idea of seeing Emma struck her heart. It felt like forever since she had last seen her and, what? It had maybe been a few hours since she had been with Emma at the hospital?

She couldn't say. But anything was better than staying out here when it was getting dark. The dark wasn't the problem. It was the lack of familiarity.

"I would love to come to your house. You'll have to tell me more about this Eddie. What's he like?"

Henry started walking toward where the mansion was located, practically skipping because of how excited he was with her arrival. He didn't want to hurry her though, knowing it could be pretty intense when first arriving. "Eddie is from the DC comics." Uh...maybe that hadn't beeen the best way to introduce the other guy. "Because sometimes people we think are just stories can be real here. Like Eddie. Or Batman. Or Superman. Or...um, us."

He glanced over at Mary Margaret, wondering how she would react to that insight. Henry knew that no one really believed him back home, at least not from his own time, though if the television show about their lives was true then eventually everyone would know what he knew to be real. He just wasn't sure where Mary Margaret stood in the timeline.

Snow merely touched the side of her nose and winked at him in response.

"Don't tell me Batman is here too." Mary hadn't been a big comic book fan, though plenty of her male students had been, but she wasn't so old-fashioned that she had never seen a movie or two in her life. That and she made herself read whatever her students were so she could talk to them about it. What would have been the point in assigning free reading times otherwise?

"He is. And Nightwing and Red Hood and Batgirl--the Stephanie one--and Superman!" Henry couldn't help but feel drawn to the boy scout with how intrinsic hope had been in all of the Man of Steel titles. Not to mention the whole being adopted part, even if Clark had lucked out with who had adopted him. "And mom is really good friends with Lois Lane. We went to her birthday party together."

He couldn't stop beaming at the memories. That had been a fun night and he figured tonight would probably surpass it once Emma joined in on the family reunion. "She's probably wondering where I am because the boards went really crazy right before I left the library."

"Boards? Henry." Snow grabbed for the boys shoulder to slow him down. Knowing that Emma was worried only made her concerns grow. She still didn't know where she was. All she knew was there were people here who claimed they were superheroes (or were. She could believe that now) and Emma was worried about Henry being out past dusk and others were panicking.

As far as welcomes go. That wasn't one she would have ever wanted. "Henry, wait. What's going on here? I need you to tell me what this place is."

Henry bit his lip, not too sure where to start the story from. He really didn't want to freak out his grandmother! "We're not in Storybrooke anymore." Which...was probably the most obvious part of everything. "I don't know why but we've been pulled to a new world and we're in Lawrence, which is in Kansas and in the middle of the Apocalypse."

He started walking again at that, letting it sink in for her. He had a feeling there would be a number of questions about a few of the words he'd said but most likely the focus would be on the Apocalypse.

"Excuse me?" That. Okay, fine. She hadn't actually given much thought about what kind of answer she had expected, but that certainly had not been it. Snow caught up to him in a rush, wrapping one arm around his shoulders and pulling him into her side.

"We're getting inside," she said, tone breezy to mask her alarm. "Let's hurry, shall we?"

Henry tried not to laugh at the urgency. Though, she did have a point. Especially if Death was wandering around and he didn't have extra amulet for her to wear just yet. There should be some in the house. "It's not far away now! I bet we could run there and make it in two minutes."

And it wouldn't cause them to look out of place. He usually did the last bit at a run, always excited to head back home to a place that Regina had never been and was full of happy memories. Well...besides Zee's disappearance. Not to mention the faster they got there the sooner they would see Emma and he couldn't wait for that reunion.

"Two minutes?" Snow looked up the street, wondering which house was Henry's. Two minutes wasn't far off, but it still felt unsafe to her. The world didn't appear to be on fire at the moment. Of course, appearances were often deceiving as well.

They might not be in Storybrooke, but some kind of mad, vengeful magic must be at work in this place and the sooner they were off the streets and less of a target, the better. "I bet we could make it there in one."

"Ready, set, GO."

And he was off, running toward the house at the end of the street, confident that she would be following him. It wouldn't surprise him if she was able to catch up and run pass him, not with all he'd read about Snow White in his book. He didn't think anything would be following them, but it never hurt to be a little extra careful right before hitting the gate. Once they were inside they were protected from all sorts of horrors, but even an inch before that and they were fair game to all of this world's evil.

It was all she needed. In fairness, she could have passed Henry at any point, especially once she gave up running in heels and paused only to get them off her feet so she could move faster, but it was safer following him than leading. Snow would always know where he was this way. Always.

The house-Mansion-Her baby and her grandson lived in a mansion. Good. Well, the mansion loomed over them as they ran up to the gate, Snow's hand resting on the metal as she gazed at it in wonder.

"This is it?" she asked, breathing a little rapid as she took it all in. She was doomed to being shocked today. She might as well get used to it.

Henry couldn't help but laugh as he pushed open the gate. "Wait until you see in the inside!" He practically hopped up the steps, flinging the door open. There was no doubt in his mind that Emma would be waiting for him and worried sick. Hopefully Mary Margaret's arrival would temper some of that worry. And who better to help with raising his eventual baby sister than his grandma?!

It was like Christmas had come early.

He held the door open and grinned, dropping his backpack off beside the door.

"Mom! You'll never guess who I found when I was coming home from the library!"

Emma had tried not to worry. Really, she had. If anyone could take care of himself in this crazy world, it was her kid. Henry was savvy and sarcastic along with being the most loving child she'd ever met. (Seriously, where did this kid come from?) But that didn't make it easier when clearly, Death had started to speak through people. And that bastard Jerry was still out there and Meg the demon, not Meg the actually pretty awesome human, could be anywhere.

She had tossed a frozen pizza in the oven, thinking Henry would've been home at least fifteen minutes earlier. But when he wasn't, she took the stupid thing out and began that frantic pacing she'd picked up somewhere along the line. Graham had attempted at least ten times to soothe her and it wasn't working. While she'd grown to appreciate the ghost's presence, she'd done all she could not to get attached. They both knew the end was coming soon.

When she heard the front door slam and her son's voice calling her (hearing him say mom still hadn't gotten old), she dropped the dishtowel she hadn't known she'd been ringing and nearly ran to the front hall. "Henry Mills, do you have any idea what time it is? Or how worried I've..."

The surprisingly maternal tone drifted off as she caught sight of the familiar brunette. There was no mistaking the pale skin and short dark hair of her roommate. Her best friend.

And her mother.

Emma's light blue eyes widened in shock and, despite herself, her lower lip trembled. Damned hormones. "Mary Margaret?" she said softly, not entirely believing the Seal would be that good to her not once, but twice. And who knew, this woman might not even know her. The Seal did funny things with timelines. Of course she'd know Henry. Henry had been in her class before Emma had shown up, obviously. It was her credit card he'd stolen--well that she knew where he got it from--in order to find Emma at all. But her?

And even if Mary Margaret did know her, unless she'd had a sudden change of difference of opinion, she didn't necessarily know who, exactly, was standing in front of her. She had to take this slowly.

"Emma." Everything and anything Snow could have said about Henry shouting out like that was lost when Emma came into the hall. Burst into the hall more like and never more like a mother it nearly broke her heart.

Emma had come into her own. She truly had here. It was written all over her face and in her body language and Snow...She couldn't stop looking. She could not stop drinking Emma in, every last scar and wrinkle, every quirk of her mouth and spark in her eye.

This was the woman she meant when she told James they were going to give Emma the best chance they could. This was her little girl grown up and no longer afraid of herself.

And Snow felt herself dovetail back in love all over again. Just like the first time. Like every time. Emma had managed to worm her way past Mary's defenses quicker than anyone ever had and Snow, Snow didn't-couldn't-put up those defenses now even if she could manage to find them.

Hilarious how now she found herself stuck rooted to the front door and unable to move forward when minutes ago she had been so willing to fling herself on Henry without a second thought.

Henry couldn't help but laugh at the scene. His heart was bursting with happiness so pleased to have the two of them reunited. He might not know exactly when Mary Margaret was from or what all she knew, but he could see the connection between the two of them. It reminded him of what he'd felt for Emma the first time he had seen her, that love that had only grown stronger every day.

"I'm sorry I'm late but I thought it'd be okay because I stopped to pick up grandma." He couldn't help but smirk at that sentence, pretty pleased with himself. "I can go leave her back outside if you want?"

He crossed the room to give Emma a quick hug, squeezing a little tighter for his baby sister as well. "I think the world is going even crazier than it usually is. And it's usually pretty crazy around here."

God, it was her. And she didn't know what else to say. It had been so long since she'd seen her mother, her friend, in anything but a television screen. So much had happened. So much had changed. She had changed. And if Mary Margaret took long enough to look... She wasn't ashamed any longer. If nothing else good had come out of her relationship, this baby was. She was good and wonderful and she would be everything her parents weren't because Emma would make sure of it. But still, how hard would that be to explain to a woman who had likely only seen her recently?

And the spell of stupidity that had fallen over her broke when Henry made his smart alec little comment. She turned to glare down at him, even playfully sticking out her tongue. "Brat. You know what's going on around here, you scared me to death." His hug was returned desperately, and she studied that sweet little face for just a moment longer than usual. Mary Margaret's face.

And she looked back up, worry in her eyes. Henry was calling her 'grandma'. Did she know? Was she ashamed? The only person in her life who'd ever put her in her place was Mary Margaret Blanchard. If she knew the truth, she knew that it was her daughter who'd made all those terrible life choices. And, clearly, wasn't finished.

Oh Emma, if there's one thing Snow could never be it's ashamed of you. Not knowing you like she does, both good and bad. She's not exactly an angel herself and if she could even hear those thoughts, she'd be yelling. Scolding really. There was no reason for that doubt.

Snow surged forward just from the look in Emma's eyes. The worry was enough to break her heart. The four steps it took to reach Emma didn't feel fast enough as she reached out to frame her face.

"You're wonderful." From Mary Margaret that would be odd. She had known Emma nearly a year after all, but that didn't change the fact that Snow was just meeting her. Truly meeting her in a proper capacity, knowing who and just how very important Emma was changed everything. "And pregnant!"

Henry laughed at both of their reactions, eyes twinkling in barely contained delight. He'd already had his reunion with Mary Margaret or maybe it really was Snow white and figured it was a good idea to let Emma have her own time with her mother. Especially since he had homework that he would need to turn into Connor tomorrow.

"I'm gonna go do my homework and then can we eat after you guys are done hugging each other because I'm almost starving." He stuck his own tongue back out at Emma and then grinned at his grandmother before slipping out toward the kitchen to set about working while he waited for the two women to be ready.

Emma shot her son an almost pleading look not to abandon her. There was a sudden burst of nerves running through her. This was Mary Margaret. She'd lived with her and cared for her and damn near loved her, as much as Emma would ever admit to loving most people. But she was more now. From that expression in her eyes, from the way she held her, she knew. She knew Emma was hers, her baby girl, the one she'd fought so hard to protect. And what had she done with that? Made a mockery of her life again and again?

And a part of her, a tiny part of her, was angry. She knew why her family had done what they had. If they hadn't, she'd have been frozen forever as a newborn baby instead of living to break the curse. But it still hurt, knowing that her mother was standing in front of her after twenty-eight years alone. Knowing that the loneliness and the fear of never having anyone care for her had driven her into the arms of a mad man.

And then Mary Margaret mentioned the baby. Self-consciously, Emma giggled, shifting to rest one hand on the small bump under her tank top. She'd have to switch to maternity clothes once and for all soon and that sucked. "Yeah. I am. Five and a half months now." Oh god, that made it sound so... She wasn't counting in weeks, she as counting in months. "I don't know what Henry's told you about this place already, but it takes us from different points in time. I've been here since December."

"Oh my God, Emma. Emma..." Snow shook her head torn between laughing and crying and oh, it was so, so hard to decide what to do. Because this was her daughter and her best friend and she was out of place and apparently missing something enormous and all she could think was Emma, Emma, this is Emma.

"Can I hug you?"

Emma was briefly hesitant. She'd never been an overly touchy person and Henry was still the only one she readily hugged with ease. But she'd been so good at letting people in lately. The walls Mary Margaret had accused her of were slowly coming down.

But this was her mom. The woman she'd wanted the Seal to bring since the second she'd found out who she was. And, before that? Her best friend. "Of course," she replied with a laugh, attempting not to cry. Damnedable hormones.

"Oh thank God." Snow curled her arms around Emma's neck and hung on for all she was worth. It wasn't enough. It wasn't nearly enough. This was 28 years of hugs that should have been given. 28 years of life she lost forever and will never get back. This was her baby and she was finally hugging her KNOWING this was her baby as a strong, capable wonderful woman.

One who a simple apology wasn't going to be enough. But it was a start, and Snow would do whatever it took for Emma to understand just how loved she was, now and then. As a friend and as a child. "Sweetie, I'm so sorry. So, so sorry. We didn't have a choice. You came...You came too soon. You're a fighter, Emma. You've always been a fighter. And I am so sorry your father and I weren't there for you when you needed us."

Emma accepted the hug and, with some effort, even returned it. Oh, she loved this woman. She had all along. And watching the television, watching her mother's story unfold, she grew to love her even more. Snow's trials and problems, the hell she'd been put through. It broke her daughter's heart, especially knowing there was nothing she could do. And those months with Jim, spent watching her real life crumble before her, in those months she found comfort in her mother's on-screen presence. Snow was a survivor. She did what she had to. What Emma hadn't realized until it was too late was that Snow also depended on others when she needed to. And made sacrifices if that's what it took.

And then Mary Margaret was apologizing for all those years and Emma gave up. No, she wasn't a crier by nature. But she'd been through hell the last several months and she'd never felt as alone in her whole life and now she was being held and told how sorry her parents were and she had parents and well...hormones. Yeah. She choked back a sob and buried her face in the small woman's shoulder.

"I know," she admitted hesitantly. "I don't blame you." And she didn't. Not entirely. Oh, it hurt. It really hurt. She wanted to know her family. She wanted to believe she'd have found them again no matter what. And she'd aged twenty-eight years while the rest of the world was frozen in time, and it wasn't right. She'd fought off terrible foster families, cruel boyfriend, and the only man to ever truly break her heart. She'd already had one baby and given him up to try and give him a better life. Now she had another and god why was she such a screw-up?

She took a deep breath and pulled back, rubbing at her eyes. "It's okay. You...you couldn't have known." Did she know about Gepetto's part in it all? How that stupid wooden puppet was supposed to take care of her and didn't? He was just a kid but he could have not run off. Or looked for her sooner. Her family didn't know. August did. "I'm all right. I'm alive. That's what matters, right?"

"It is and you found us. If your father..." But James wasn't there, might never be there and Snow had to focus on what she did have. After 28 years she had her gorgeous, fiery, intelligent baby girl right in her arms again, right where she belonged, and her grandson led her right back to her.

She had a family again, as big and wonderful as she always wanted and they were right here for her to look after and protect. And nothing, she swore right then, was going to take them away from her again.

Not again.

"You're beautiful, Emma. And smart and I can see what you're thinking so stop it right now."

Her father. David. That had taken some time to deal with. She didn't really respect David much in Storybrooke. Oh, she knew a lot of the things she had against him were Regina's doing. But seeing her best friend hurting had been hard enough. Seeing it again later and knowing that it was her mother in pain? Even harder. But the weird part was how much she wanted James in her life.
