WHO: Lois & Clark
WHAT: Time for a talk.
WHEN: September 2nd. Afternoonish.
WHERE: The Fortress of Solitude.
RATING: TBD!

Slowly, but surely, Kon was making progress. Clark didn't expect for him to bounce back from the personal trauma that came with having one of your greatest enemies showing up at your doorstep overnight, but he couldn't help but hope that Kon would find a way to deal with what had happened so that he wouldn't have to rely on hiding away in the Fortress forever to avoid doing something that he would later regret. It had been well over several days since Clark had decided to focus all of his attention on staying at the Fortress with Kon and, as far as Clark could tell, the world outside of the crystallized walls that contained them was as safe as it could be when trapped in the middle of a silent apocalypse. There were no outbursts of war from Lucifer, no sudden pinch of insanity back in Lawrence - everything was calm, for the moment, which made the process of looking out for Kon a world easier. Clark didn't have to worry about everyone else. At least not any more than he usually did.

And he didn't have to worry about Lois. Not with her here, wandering around the Fortress where he could keep a close eye on her. While the idea behind her coming to the Fortress was centrally focused on her providing moral support to Kon, who really needed it, Clark had to admit that Lois had unintentionally helped Clark too. Clark worried for Lois a great deal on a regular basis, but ever since their conversation about having a serious talk about what was going on between them, Clark quickly discovered that his concerns had quadrupled. With her nearby, Clark didn't have to worry about anything harming her.

...unfortunately, Lois being around ever since that conversation of theirs had also made things more complicated. He didn't have to worry about her getting mugged over a crazy story, but he did have to worry about slipping up and doing something stupid that would ruin whatever it was that was going on with them. Her being around was both a blessing and a curse; with Lois around, he knew that she was safe, but were they?

There really was only one way to find out.

Clark had promised Lois that they would talk. Kon was off somewhere, probably putting another one of his Kryptonian artifacts into fritz mode, and things seemed calm enough. If Clark was going to try to talk to Lois, now seemed like the right time.

In the living area, Clark found the door to the room Lois had been staying in and awkwardly knocked. "Lois?"

Lois had spent most of the day exploring the Fortress some more. After stumbling upon the Phantom Zone projector, she’d held off on wandering for a day, not wanting to bring up old memories of being inside that place, but when she hadn’t had any nightmares, she’d decided not to let one bad thing about the place put her off investigating. She’d run into Kon and spent some time with him and Krypto before hanging out in the animal sanctuary and watching the different species in their habitats. The Fortress included all of this amazing material, an untold amount of stories dying to be told, and she couldn’t write about any of them. It was like torture, but also a great distraction from what was on her mind.

Lois had come to the Fortress to hang out with Kon because he’d invited her up and she had wanted to offer the teenager whatever support she could. It seemed to be working. Her conversations with him were becoming more like normal, there seemed to be a life to him that had been missing ever since everything with the Carnival had exploded, and she hoped that the Seal didn’t throw anything else at him before Kon had the time he needed to heal.

However she had been a bundle of anxiety ever since Clark and she had agreed they would talk about what they were doing once he came back to Kansas. Lois had been fine with that idea, convinced she would have at least a week to prepare herself for a conversation she wasn’t sure she wouldn’t screw up considering how well any of her past relationships had gone. Except now she was in the Fortress and Clark was there as well and she kept waiting for him to catch her by herself and want to have the talk.

Lois knew she cared for Clark a great deal and at first she’d been concerned it was just a mixture of everyone constantly telling her about what happened in the comics and her feelings for the Clark back home that were creating the ones she had for the Clark here. Those were just excuses as to why she didn’t want to shake up what they already had though, reasons to not try and tangle with a friendship that she cared greatly about, but once Clark had been abducted by Dark and all the days she had spent tirelessly working to get him back had seen all of those excuses be shoved to the side. She cared for Clark but Lois had been unsure how he felt about her and while some of their conversations and actions had fostered hope that he felt the same, there were others that had caused her to want to run for the hills and squash down all the emotions that wanted to bubble out of her. Their last text session had her hopes up though and she was trying to reel them in, still waiting for the other shoe to drop and everything to come crashing down.

She’d been rearranging the shoes she had brought with her for about the fifth time when she heard the knock and Clark calling her name. She hesitated for a moment, but was reminded of the fact that she didn’t need to say anything considering he could justlisten for her heartbeat to know she was in the room.

“It’s open,” she called out, not bothering to get up from her position on the floor. “I really feel you should get me a shoerack, Clark. It’s infinitely neater than stacking them along the wall.”

With her permission, Clark entered the room. At the sight of Lois organizing her army of shoes, Clark immediately arched a brow and shook his head. The woman was trapped in a Fortress filled to the brim with alien artifacts and technology, so naturally that meant that she had to occupy herself with shoes. "You wouldn't have to stack them along the wall if you didn't bring a million shoes with you every time you visited, Lois," Clark replied. "If you were more practical..." Whoops. Two seconds into the same room as her and he was already getting on her case. That probably wasn't the best way to start the conversation he had planned on trying for when he had originally decided to come and talk.

Even if he still thought she only needed one pair of shoes to get her through her stay at the Fortress. Who really cared if she wore the same shoes two days in a row? He didn't."You know what? Forget all that. I'm not here to debate shoe politics with you." He grinned a little. "Though someone should." Shoe Addicts Anonymous. Was that a thing? It definitely needed to be a thing. "Have you considered professional help?"

He kept going back to the shoes. Why the shoes? Clark ran a hand over the back of his neck and turned to look at the door, which he had left partially ajar. It didn't matter. Kon was on the polar opposite end of the Fortress. He wasn't about to walk in on their potential conversation anytime soon.

That was, if Clark could build up enough nerve to start the potential conversation. He cleared his throat and awkwardly jammed his hands into the front pockets of his jeans. "I was hoping we could talk about - Kon seems okay for right now and, ah, I told you before that I wanted to talk to you about...?" Smooth. Making public speeches and putting everything out there was a lot easier when it was just Superman doing what Superman did best. Personal relations, stuff like this... Clark didn't know why he got so fumbly. "I wanted to talk about us. We should...talk about us. If that's okay? I mean, it can wait. If you want. Or if you'd rather play with your shoes?" He tried for a playful smile at that, though it came off more as a mix of hopeful uncertainty than anything else.

Lois had been ready to offer a rebuttal to Clark's apparent lack of knowledge over proper shoe etiquette, but held her tongue because of his uncomfortable body language. The glance at the door, hands in his front pockets, coupling that with the rambling he was doing and she felt it was best to not pick on his lack of shoe knowledge. Instead she could pick on the rest of what he was getting at. She couldn't help it. His rambling was adorable.

"I do like my shoes." She tilted her head, watching him carefully and wondered how long she should let him sweat this out. Considering she didn't actually want him to leave the room, it was probably best if she didn't toy with him for too long. "I'll let you in on a secret, Clark, there's something I like more than shoes. Happens to be in this room with me right now, but I would trade all of these-" She gestured to her neatly stacked row, and picked up a pair of black ones "-even these, and these cost about an entire paycheck, if the guy in question will spit out what he's trying to say."

Lois dropped the shoe back into the row and pushed herself up off the ground. She had rehearsed what she was going to say when they had this talk about a thousand times in her head, each one more heartfelt than the last, but all of that was forgotten as she walked toward him, stopping just short of invading his personal space. Maybe Steph in all of her annoying teasing had been right and the direct approach was the way to go.

“Considering I’m the one of us that talks the most, I guess I might as well come out and say it.” What did she have to lose? Well...aside from everything as far as her brain was concerned, but Lois Lane had never backed down from a challenge and she certainly wasn’t about to do so from this one because she was a little scared it wouldn’t turn out how she wanted. “As cliche as it probably sounds, and you know I’m not big on those, somewhere along the journey in this fun-filled Apocalypse ride I started falling in love with you.”

Lois shrugged, trying to act nonchalant about what she had just said to distract from how vulnerable she was feeling in that moment. “Now see, no rambling. Just speaking my mind. I bet you can do it too." Maybe she should have stuck with the shoes. "Your turn.”
