Who: Cal & Open
Where: Park near the apartments
When: Early Wednesday, Jan 13th
Warnings: Possible, will update as necessary.

The dreams had come back, and that was enough to get him running again, as if he could leave them behind somehow. It hadn't worked yet but that didn't stop him from trying. They would have been nightmares to anyone else, but to Cal they were familiar enough that they could almost be called old friends. If it weren't for the fact that they still terrified him, but on a much deeper level now that he knew, at least in part, what he was capable of.

The first thing he'd done that morning, after sun-up, though it was hard to tell with all the cloud cover, was to put on his shoes, grab his jacket, and start running, even before breakfast. He'd made it to the park in ten minutes, a trip that even at a run usually took him at least fifteen. That was one of the things that was bothering him, that there was nothing wrong with his brain, but he kept having the dreams, he could move faster than he had before, with that same easy lope that the Auphe had, smooth and easy like a striking snake.

He'd already made three laps of the park and was partway through a third, finally starting to slow to a normal pace, starting to tire, if only a little. His jacket was tied around his waist, wearing jeans and a long-sleeved tee, even in the cold, his hair was in disarray since he hadn't bothered to tie it back before he'd bolted, he'd head back soon enough, he was going to try another lap or two to either tire himself sufficiently, or manage to outrun the dreams still nagging at the back of his mind.

Cal wasn't the only card-carrying member of the Nightmare Club, Needy had been in it since she figured out exactly what was up with her former BFF. But it wasn't nightmares that had her up early, not this time at least. Once you started having them enough nightmares sort of became a non-issue, even when they were about your friends getting eaten. Or butchering a rock band.

But that band deserved it, so whatever. Needy kinda liked doing that.

What had her up was the fact that something just felt kinda off lately. She wasn't sure what it was, especially since it wasn't all the time, but it was sort of like back in the day when she could tell what Jennifer was feeling. But Jennifer was dead. She was dead and she hadn't shown up in Lawrence. Hopefully. Okay, so there were people being eaten. But Jennifer always left behind like... blood and torn up pieces of people and everything. She never ate an entire person.

Skinny bitch.

Really, Needy just felt she needed to clear out her head, and a walk in the cold morning air seemed like just the thing for it. So she had bundled up appropriately and headed out, not paying much of any attention where she was headed. Once she found herself in the park she headed over to a bench by the path and plopped down, pulling her feet up to sit indian style. Maybe she should start meditating again or something. She did that when she was in the asylum, after all.

He'd also heard the reports of people being eaten, and his second thought was Auphe, his first, of course was a Boggle, but there weren't any remains, not besides the skeletons, and neither the Auphe nor the boggles would leave that sort of souvenir, the Auphe might leave limbs, or leave bodies and take the heads, and Boggles would definitely leave limbs, maybe even whole bodies.

Cal was surprised that anyone was at the park at that hour, he'd only come across a couple of people even more dedicated to a morning jog than he was, and he'd passed them up, a couple times already. He was almost right on her before he realized who it was, slowing to a more normal pace, only just edging up on breathless then, four times around and still ready to go again, "Hey. What are you doing out here?" It could have been an accusation, but from him it was just curiosity, brow furrowing as he dragged a hand through his hair, trying to sort it into some semblance of order.

Honestly? Needy hadn't expected to see anyone she knew at the park. Especially Cal, what with how she knew just how much he loved his sleep. So when she heard a familiar voice (she had been off in her own world again for a moment there) she couldn't help looking slightly surprised before giving him a smile. "I could ask you the same thing, you know," she said simply. This was the guy that had become her best friend, after all.

"Nothing really," she added with a shrug. Needy glanced around quickly to make sure no one was nearby that could see her before sort of hovering a couple inches off the bench and scooting down so that Cal would have room to sit if he wanted to. That way she wouldn't have to actually move or anything. Not any individual parts of her body, at least. "Something just feels off lately but I can't put my finger on it. Led to me not being able to sleep and ending up walking down here."

He nodded at that, settling on the end of the bench, finally twisting his hair back with a tie from around his wrist, "Yeah, sleep is kind of a limited resource lately." He was pretty sure it wasn't just the two of them being insomniacs, but then again, it wasn't like most people at the complex had the most normal of sleeping schedules anyway from what he could tell.

He shrugged, "Still going to try and hog some of it when I get back, kind of been hoping a run would tire me out a little, you know?" He was pretty sure she did, since they operated almost the same way. His brow creased just a little then, "And a bad feeling, like a premonition? Disturbance in the Force? Something else?"

Needy couldn't help it. Sometimes when her sleep tank was running low, meaning she'd been getting far less than she normally did, she got a touch loopy. And her brand of loopy consisted of either spacing out, such as she had done when she first sat down, hence why she didn't notice Cal approaching her until he spoke, or she just did random stupid shit. Thankfully, it wasn't stupid shit that would get her arrested or anything, because that would be bad. Really bad. Instead it was just dumb twelve year old shit.

Like reaching over to pull Cal's tiny new pony tail for no real reason whatsoever aside from she felt like it.

"Sorry, not a premonition girl," she said, shrugging once more. "It's weird though. I don't know if I ever told you about how I used to be able to sort of sense things about Jennifer before she died. And I mean like, I did that for most of my life. Like, I always knew when she was nearby and a lot of the times I could tell what she was doing even when I was miles away from her." Alright, saying that out loud? Needy knew she sounded like some sort of creepy stalker girl. Which she wasn't. "I don't know why I could do that, it was just on my end. Jennifer couldn't do it. But lately it's been like, I don't know. Like when something was really bothering her. But she's dead and not here so it really doesn't make any sense. And I'm babbling."

"Happens sometimes." he said, batting lightly at her hand when she pulled his hair, "And you might have mentioned it once." He said, because it sounded vaguely familiar, probably something she'd mentioned in passing. He was also glad to hear that it wasn't premonitions, he'd had enough of that with George, and while he figured that Needy wouldn't be as enigmatic about it, it was still good to know.

He leaned forward, elbows resting on his knees, "So what do you think it is? I mean, do you think maybe she's here and just hasn't found the boards yet?" It seemed like the most logical explanation to him, he knew showing up in a new place with no explanation and no information would bother him.

Needy thought about that for a moment before shrugging. "I really have no idea," she said simply. "But if she is here then either she's here from before she got possessed or she's just not hungry yet. Because if she was hungry then we'd be hearing stories about people being eaten. And not leaving just bones behind, it'd be like... piles of shredded meat. Colin's mom said he looked like lasagna with teeth." That was something that she didn't ever want to tell Colin though, not since he was here in Lawrence, all alive and everything. He didn't need to know the state Jennifer left him in or what it did to his mom.

"I just... I really don't want to have to kill her all over again." Needy generally acted like a tough chick, like things didn't bother her. And a lot of the stuff she had done didn't bother her. But even though it had to be done, killing Jennifer was the hardest thing she had ever been through. After the fact, at least. When it got to the point that she was stabbing her in the heart it wasn't so bad, she was on a rage tangent considering the bitch just killed her boyfriend.

Sighing, she shifted enough to flop back against the back of the bench, thankful that her coat kept the cold from hitting her back.

He nodded at that, fingers lacing, still just watching the ground at his feet, thinking things over, "And it's pretty unlikely that a new arrival wouldn't find the boards, I mean, unless they're from someplace that doesn't have computers, but it seems like someone's even found those guys pretty quick." He shrugged then, "So we've pretty much counted that out, I'm not going to say completely, because, well, it isn't completely out, but besides that, what else do you think it could be? Just, like, general stress maybe?"

Even though they weren't going out, not even close, she was still his best friend and he did worry about her, partly for his own well-being, since he was pretty sure she was the only thing keeping him sane, some days, but also because she wasn't entirely sane some days.

"Hell, some people even find the boards before anyone even finds them." Like Colin. She was pretty sure that he'd found the boards first and someone else had found him later. It was almost like some of the people just knew to look them up on the internet as soon as they got there, as weird as that was. But it happened a lot, so maybe that was how it worked for some of the arrivals.

"I'm not sure what else it could be though." Needy went quiet for a moment, biting her lip as she thought about the whole situation. "Maybe it's someone else that's been all bothered by stuff lately? I have no idea how though, considering it was only ever Jennifer I could sense things about. And I'm not even sure how that happened in the first place. I always figured it was because we were so close or something." She went a bit still as a thought hit her. The only other person that she'd gotten even nearly as close to as she was with Jennifer was actually sitting right beside her.

After a long pause she finally spoke again, turning to look at him carefully.. "Uh. You're not being all weirded out or worried about something new, are you?"

He blinked up at her then, the question having caught him off-guard, brow creasing, "No? Not, like, really new." He shrugged one shoulder, finally sitting up again, "I mean, I told you about what happened with the ghosts, right? How I opened a bunch of gates in a row?" He'd given her the bare minimum of information, really, mostly just that he had done it, and it had been easy, and he wasn't planning on doing it ever ever again.

Not that that promise had held up long, because he'd practiced again a few times since then, always with the same ease, which freaked him out into stopping again almost immediately. He knew he hadn't told her about the dreams, not besides that he had them, sometimes, and he definitely hadn't told her that they'd been making a resurgence, worse, maybe, for having been put off so long.

"Within the last like... month and a half new," she clarified. Because to some people that was recent, to others? Not so much. And why hadn't Needy brought up these weird new feelings to people before then? Honestly, she didn't need people thinking she was any crazier than they probably already thought she was. Telling Cal was no big, he knew that she was nuts. Plus, she trusted him. "Yeah, you told me about that much. Nothing more than that though, if there even was more."

At least she didn't say that in a Clearly you're keeping things from me tone, because that wasn't the way she meant it. Needy had no problem with Cal not telling her every single detail of everything ever, just like she hadn't told him every detail about her life.

He dragged a hand through his hair, yanking most of it out of the band he'd just pulled it back with, tugging it out again, hair falling across his face "Oh, well in that case yeah, the whole, gates ... thing." He scratched both hands through his hair, mostly trying to sort his own thoughts into order on the issue, "Talked to Martha, the doctor here, managed to convince her not to make me go to the hospital, borrowed one of those portable MRI things?" He shrugged, "Because after I did it I was bleeding pretty bad, headache like maybe I'd ruptured something, had to make sure I didn't."

Another shrug, sitting back as well, "Nothing showed up on the scan, nothing, not even a shadow that might be something." He wasn't entirely sure why he was telling her, besides the fact that he trusted her too, and now that he'd started it was hard to stop, "And I know I didn't tell you what happened while I was opening the gates, I was laughing, Clark said I sounded crazy, and I'd believe it, but it was just..." He was at a loss, really, "Fun." He shook his head, "Just like when I opened them before and I just wanted to rip into something, just because I can." A huff, "Robin says that the Auphe used to hunt T-Rexes just because it was fun, I ... kind of get that now."

He shrugged, "For a long time I tried to pretend that that feeling was just whatever they'd done to me while I was there, but knowing that there's nothing wrong with my brain, that all that's in my head is me? I don't know." He shook his head, "Just... dunno."

Needy couldn't help it. Once he was done talking she first smacked him upside the head (lightly for her, at least. It shouldn't actually hurt him) then said the first thing that came to her mind. "You were having to have MRIs and stuff and you didn't tell me?" Okay, really, when someone was worried about their heads being broken you probably shouldn't hit them in the head, but whatever. Needy worked on impulses way more often than she should. Everyone knew that.

But once that was out of the way she sighed and gave him a nod. "Kinda like how I enjoyed when I got my hands on Low Shoulder. Er. The band that got Jennifer possessed. I'm pretty sure that liking fights and, you know, killing people came with my demon powers. So hey, I get the whole liking something that you know you shouldn't like thing." Boy did she ever. She had changed so much since she finally stood up to Jennifer, and it wasn't just bloodlust that had changed about her, either.

"Ow." He said, rubbing the opposite side of his head from the one she'd smacked, it was deadpan, really, because he was fine, and he did smile a moment later, just slightly, "It was just one MRI and no 'and stuff', and nothing showed up, so I didn't figure it was a big deal."

He shook his head, "And it's not just liking fights, I've always done that, right after opening a gate it's like..." His brow furrowed, really trying to sort it out into something she could understand, which was hard because he didn't even really understand it, "I just want to tear something up, teeth and claws and just ... this malice but not, really, because I only realize that's what it is after. At the time it just feels normal, like that's what I'm supposed to be doing." Another head shake, "Doesn't matter, I'm done with it for a while, at least until I stop dreaming about Tumulus again." This last was barely a murmur.

"Still, you should tell me these things," Needy said, frowning some as she turned on the bench so she could actually face him more easily. "Because believe it or not, I worry about you sometimes." Okay, so she worried about him often. Because he was her best friend and this world was stock full of crazy. Yes, he could take care of himself, Needy was aware, but he'd gotten tortured just like she had.

And damn, Needy had felt great as she slaughtered that jerkoff band. She really did. Even looking back she liked the memories, even though she knew it was something that should scar her for life and freak her the fuck out. Problem was, Needy was already scarred for life in more ways than one. There was no more room for scars. Not when it came to violence, at least. Being a victim of it or causing it. Hell, the causing it was a blast for her, a fact that not many people knew.

But too bad for Cal Needy had those enhanced senses. "You're dreaming about it again?" she asked.

He nodded, "Yeah." A shrug, "It comes and goes, same as it always has. Just wish it would be more with the going for a while." A shrug then, pushing up and away from the bench, offering her a hand up, "C'mon, we should head back before we turn into ice sculptures." Not that it was quite that cold, but now that he wasn't moving he could definitely feel it seeping in, shaking out his jacket and tugging it on.

"So this ... thing." He shrugged, "You think it just happens? Like, people you spend time with or something, some weird kind of osmosis?" His brow furrowed then, "It's why you checked to make sure I was doing okay when I was at the boot camp, isn't it?" he remembered that incident, remembered teasing her about it, but if this had been going on that long, maybe they should look into it, somehow.

Needy took the hand that was offered once he had his jacket pulled back on and stood, not bothering to let go of it once she was on her feet and they started moving. It was one of the perks of the friendship they had. "It's not really like I can say anything against nightmares anyway. You know I have them all the time, too." But thankfully, Needy had learned how to just ignore them since they became a regular thing. Plus, the whole having to learn how to not wake up screaming in the asylum was helpful. Because when she was there if she woke up screaming in would rush a bunch of orderlies with a shot of something to knock her out again. And she wasn't a fan of being drugged up all the time.

"Actually," she started, pausing her speech for a moment as they continued to walk. "Since just after the whole Al thing." Might as well be honest about everything since she'd already spilled this much. Why she felt the need to tell him all of that earlier, she wasn't sure. Probably because he was the one person that she knew for a fact wouldn't get extremely weirded out about it or anything. They were buds, after all. "And yeah. That's why I sent you that message when you were at Bobby's. Weird feelings again then, too."

"Couple nights there were pretty bad." He shrugged, "That's about when they started up again." He scratched the back of his neck, walking at an easy pace, done running for the time being, he knew it wasn't going to help, he'd known it all along, really, but sometimes it was easier to pretend, "You think maybe it's because I pulled you through a gate on the way out?" It was the only thing he could think of, since they hadn't been the only ones there, and she didn't seem to be getting her psychic on with any of them.

He shook his head, "Doesn't explain how you could do it with Jennifer though." He shrugged, "Maybe it's just something you've got the ability for if you spend enough time with someone, like some kind of empath."

"That might have something to do with it." Really though, Needy wasn't sure if that was it, considering that for a few days there Phoebe had been going through all sorts of portals right along side them. But, then again, she had no way of knowing if Phoebe was having crazyrandom feelings, too. "But hey, now you know you can't really hide anything from me. At least not when you're having a hard time."

And then a thought hit her and it made her chuckle a bit. "But just to warn you, I've also been able to tell when Jennifer was making out with people sometimes. So if you feel like making out with some random chick and don't want me to know for whatever retarded reason? Keep that in mind." Mostly she was just teasing when she said that, though it would be pretty weird if she started sensing when Cal was making out with people.

"I hate to say it, but maybe I should actually sit down and watch that stupid movie sometime. Maybe it'll help me figure it out."

"Oh yeah, because that happens so often." He said, rolling his eyes, he was amused all the same, however, "But yeah, I'll keep it in mind." He wasn't sure, really, what to think of that, knowing that she'd be able to tell when things weren't going well. On the one hand it was kind of annoying, if he was mostly fine, but on the other hand it might be the only warning someone else got before he snapped.

He shrugged at the suggestion of watching the movie, "I'll watch it with you, if you want, otherwise I'll stay out of the way." Since he knew the thought of people reading the books about him made him bristle a little. Especially the way they were written, like he was the one telling it.

"You're a regular playboy. Don't try to deny it," Needy grinned a bit at that, knowing full well that Cal was in no way a bed hopper. Hell, she was pretty sure that she hadn't even seen him so much as flirt with a chick from behind the bar when they were working together. So at least she wasn't going to have to worry about random weird flashes of Cal makeouts.

She considered that for a moment. Should she have Cal watch it with her? See when she was at her absolute craziest? Well. Craziest aside from when she was all infected with Kryptonite. Since all the stuff of the movie happened she'd learned to hide her insanity relatively well. Or, she thought she did at least. Needy chewed on her lip for a moment before answering him though. "Yeah, sure," she finally said. "It might be better if you watch it with me. You might pick up on something that I always figured was no big deal."

"Oh yeah, Casanova, that's me." Really it was a good thing he was amused by it too, because otherwise it wouldn't be pretty. He nodded at her agreement about the movie, giving her hand a squeeze, since he hadn't let go yet either, "Makes sense, outside opinion and all that." He shrugged then, "Whenever, though not like it's a big rush." Well, not unless she started picking up on specifics instead of just his general unease and exhaustion.

Changing the subject he said, "Was thinking of heading out to the shooting range soon." A shrug, "And by 'shooting range' I mean 'empty lot' because it's easier that way, don't have to worry about running into anyone."

"Hey, you could totally rake in the girls if you tried," Needy said with a shrug. She meant it, too. After all, Cal was quite the cutie. Pretty much anyone could see that. Or they could if, you know, they were of the orientation that would spot cute guys.

She squeezed his hand back as they turned to make their way down another street. "It just came out on dvd so yeah, there's plenty of time. Shouldn't be too hard to track down a copy of it or anything." It was just weird being able to tell things about Cal was all. She'd get used to it no problem, but it was strange simply because it was someone that she hadn't spent her entire life with. Instead she and Cal had only known each other for several months.

"An empty field would probably be even better," she said with a shrug. "There's bound to be one outside of the city somewhere. That way you won't attract any cops or anything."

He huffed a laugh, deciding to let the talk of the movie go for now, they'd come to a decision after all, that was the important thing, "I'm not used to there being fields." He shook his head, "I'm a city-dweller, always have been." Strictly speaking, he hadn't always been, but he'd taken to it more quickly than he would have thought, "There aren't really any fields in New York." He shrugged, "Not in the city, anyway, might be some upstate, but that's not the same thing."

He shrugged then, "And yeah, I probably could, but what would I do with that many girls?" He knew it, of course, there'd been times when a patron's subtle flirting became more and more overt the longer he ignored it. But what else was he going to do?

"I'm used to them," Needy shrugged a bit at that. "I'm from Middle Of Nowhere, Missouri so yeah. It's so middle of nowhere that it doesn't even exist in this world." Which was just fine with her. The fact that Devil's Kettle didn't exist in this world just made it a touch easier to not think about certain things as often as she would have. Plus, she wouldn't be tempted to go double check and see if her mom was there, then be seriously disappointed when she wasn't.

Needy looked over at Cal as they walked, a slight smirk on her face. "See, what you do with them is what I don't want to know. Sucks that I'd probably know sometimes anyway though," she teased. "Do my teensy bit of sanity a favor and stay single."

He tossed her a mock salute at that, along with an amused "You got it, chief." He shrugged, "That was kind of my plan anyway." He added, he seemed to recall that they'd had that particular discussion before, but now he wasn't so sure. He wasn't going to bring it up all the same, however.

Another shrug, "I guess I could start a collection, I guess? Like some people collect stamps or postcards or whatever." He shook his head, "Except that I don't really have that kind of space, so I guess that's out. Could always try and set up a weekly jello wrestling ring, or something, which could be entertaining for a while." He was having fun with this, actually.
