Who: Murphy & Connor MacManus
Where: The lobby to start, and then parts unknown
When: Yesterday! Aka: Jan 2nd
Warnings: Probably some swearing.

Murphy's mind was in a whirl, it was too much to process all at once, he'd even gone back to the informational page that he'd been given two or three times while conversing with his brother, but even breaking it down it was still a lot to take in. And then there was the prospect that somehow Connor had jumped ahead eight years, and that prospect was unsettling at best, they were twins, arguing over who was older was just what they did it was unfair for someone to go and clear that up without so much as a how d'you do.

He smoked as he walked, glad that he'd had a half pack in his coat pocket, needing something to keep himself occupied aside from trying not to look suspicious with a bag full of heavy artillery slung over his shoulder. He had to believe that no one would know what it was, after all, it might just as easily have been sports equipment. It didn't take him long to find the place, he'd gotten good directions and he was still full of nervous energy, which made him walk a little faster than usual.

He hesitated a few long moments on the front steps, finishing off his cigarette and flicking the butt end of it off into a sludgy puddle before trudging up the stairs and easing the front door open, not entirely sure what to expect, really as he slipped through, having fallen into that almost-silent movement that seemed to creep over him the same as that sense of purpose did.

His brother could take care of himself but it hadn't stopped Connor from wondering what had happened to him after he'd disappeared to end up in this place. When he'd seen Murphy's post on the boards, he'd been relieved - until he reread what it said, along with his brother's response. What hadn't even happened to him yet had happened to Connor eight years ago. What the hell was that about? Ma would've had a good laugh at that. She'd never told them, so it looked like the universe had stepped in to settle it.

Someone or something had an odd sense of humor. But a difference in years or not, it was still his brother. After sending him the address for the complex, Connor shut down the computer, grabbed his keys, and headed down for the lobby to wait.

He'd grabbed a newspaper that someone had left behind in the community kitchen to read through while he waited. Part way through a engaging article about the rotary club's latest fund raising venture, he felt the brief chill that came with the door opening and glanced up. A grin followed. "I was beginning to wonder if you'd gotten lost."

He scoffed at the greeting, though it was mostly in jest, that was Connor alright, even though the small back part of his brain was taking stock, just to see if he looked any different, and he did, a bit, but Murphy was willing to ignore that for the time being, "Started out lost, Connor, don't figure I could make it much worse." He shrugged then, giving the lobby a once-over, drumming his fingers against the strap of his bag, "This is all too damn elaborate to be a setup." He finally concluded, which was really what he'd been hoping for previously.

He shook his head then, padding over to get a closer look at his brother, yeah, there were definitely signs of a few more years, but nothing to worry about too much, "So, you managed a whole week without me." There was something smug and amused in the tone, brow quirking, mostly because he could remember times that they'd gotten antsy just being apart for an hour or two.

Joking or not, he did have a point. He'd been there a week already and he only felt slightly less lost than when he'd first arrived. He was a little less skeptical but what to do with the situation was still a point of consideration. "That was my thought. Too many different people here and others keep arriving, just like us. I think we've landed in the real deal."

At least that was what gut instinct was telling him. As insane as the situation had sounded, he'd seen or heard nothing so far to make him think otherwise. Part of him still expected to wake up and find that it was an elaborate dream or the result of a head injury he didn't know he had. The other part was convinced they were here for a reason, to help fight something bigger than mob bosses.

Connor hit him in the arm. "Of course I did. It's you that needs to be worried about when you're alone. Who knows what kind of trouble you'd manage?"

He winced, rubbing the slugged arm dramatically, "Aye, well then it's a good thing I was only alone for an hour or so innit? Didn't have a chance to find out." He would always accuse Connor of being the troublemaker, though it was usually Murphy who started things, Connor just had a habit of finishing them.

He shook his head then, smile returning, that usual creeping, breaking-dawn smile that he had when he really meant it before slinging an arm around his brother's shoulders in a tight hug, "Still missed you though."

He shook his head as he stepped back, scratching the back of his neck and arching a brow at Connor once more, "So if you're from the future, tell me, did we do it? Yakaveta I mean, and the rest too I guess." After all, they hadn't really planned that far ahead, it wasn't a strong suit of theirs. On the one hand he wasn't entirely sure he wanted to know, but on the other hand he needed to know.

"Good thing. It'd be a hell of a first introduction, getting you out of whatever trouble you managed to find around here." Given what he'd read already and the two of them once again in the same place, they'd be finding it soon enough anyway. "I'm sure you'll find something to get into before long."

Conner shifted his arm under his brother's. "Of course you did." The grin became a little more genuine. "Missed you too." Even if they weren't from the same point in time. It was just going to take some getting used to. "Try not to disappear on me." It took a little maneuvering but he managed to ruffle his hair.

He nodded to the stairwell, indicating for Murphy to follow him. There would be time to point him towards the people in charge later. For now, in the safety of the complex, catching up came first. He hesitated. Would telling him break time or some shit? Anymore than it already was in this situation. On second thought, it couldn't hurt. "Of course we did," he replied. "A few years later when his son takes his place, we take care of him too."

He actually relaxed a little, knowing that, a tension that he hadn't realized he'd been holding. He nodded as he followed his brother up the stairs, fingers drumming against the strap of his bag once more, "Good. Means we didn't give up the mission." Because that's what it was, as far as he was concerned, their Mission from God, it always had been and it was nice to know that they hadn't been forsaken even a few years down the road.

"So you figure it's true?" He asked, head tilting, "All that shite about the Apocalypse?" He had no reason to disbelieve it at the moment, but that didn't mean he had to believe it by default, especially since he still wasn't sure that he wasn't hallucinating this whole thing.

"We laid low for a couple of years," Connor explained, glancing over his shoulder at his brother. "Spent time in Ireland with Da until little Yakavetta called us out. Hired a man to kill a priest." Even after both men were dead, it still made him angry. The blood of a good man shed unnecessarily to send them a message. They had gotten exactly what they deserved. "Now they're both dead. Along with a good number of their associates." And people they cared about. But given the amount of information Murphy had already been subjected to, Connor stayed silent in that respect.

His next question was a little harder to answer. His shoulders rose in a lazy shrug as he paused on the landing. "I figure if we can suddenly appear in one place when we've been in another that the Apocalypse couldn't be too much more of a stretch." He rubbed the back of his neck. "I'm still havin' a hard time believin' it myself but aside from getting a little crazy, these people seem to be honest enough." He shook his head and started up the next flight.

"In a weird way, I suppose it makes sense, with the mission we've taken up," he added after a moment of silence.

He nodded, just absorbing the information, it made sense to him, really, that they would have dropped off the radar as best they could at some point, and he figured they'd be good at it, but knowing that they hadn't just up and stopped was comforting in a way. Just the same as knowing that Connor was still iffy on the apocalypse, but wanted to believe it was comforting as well, made him think that maybe he wasn't so crazy.

He finally said: "Aye, that's what I was thinking." he hadn't had much chance to talk with anyone yet to judge their honesty, or their sanity, for himself, but he was going to rectify that once he was done catching up with Connor, especially if there really were years between them. He followed in silence for a moment, asking: "Do you think we've got a chance? At stopping it, not just you and me, everyone."

"I'm not really sure," he admitted. "It doesn't quite seem like the one I remember hearing about. I certainly don't remember anything about people ending up in a different place altogether because a seal broke. But if this demon bitch means to use it to bring Hell to Earth, it sounds like something they'll want to be stopping at all costs."

Reaching the fifth floor, Connor lead the way to his apartment. Unlocking the door, he headed inside, leaving the door open for his brother to follow. "Make yourself at home." Unnecessary statement as he knew Murphy would do just that but it seemed like the thing to say.

"A little of both," Connor admitted. "It's a new place, doesn't have that worn in feel that Doc's did. Or the company." His first and only visit, a couple of guys in suits had come in and seemed more at home than he did. He wanted the place where it felt more like a second home walking in than just going in to get a drink. It was going to be hard to find a place that even came close.

He rose to his feet and grabbed his coat from where it was slung over the chair. "Come on. I'm hungry, you've got money, and I don't feel like raiding the kitchen again." There had to be some way to make money around this place if they were running a complex for the out of towners. They wouldn't need to make it last too long.

He smiled, shaking his head as he unfolded to his feet, making sure the duffel full of weapons was fine where it was, figuring that it would be safer to leave it than to lug it around, and besides that, even without Connor's ten pounds of rope it was still damn heavy, "So no dents in the bar from people's heads whacking into it you mean." He nodded, "I'd say we could fix that up, but don't think we'd be able to talk our way out of a drunk and disorderly around here."

Murphy wasn't too worried about income, there was always something to be done that needed another pair of hands, another strong back or two, and they were no strangers to hard work, he made a mental note that they'd have to get some sort of paperwork, since they didn't belong here.

"Yeah. All pristine and shit. Absolutely no stories to tell." He had the feeling if someone actually started a fight in there, the police would be called and those involved would be spending the night in jail. "We'd be out of luck the moment they started asking for IDs and fingerprinting." While there were advantages to not existing in this place, he figured they still had to be a little more careful than usual.

Shrugging on his coat, he dumped his keys in his pocket and then headed for the door. "I'll ask around, see if someone around here makes a good ID." Since they had no chance of having a legal identity around here, a fake one was looking to be a necessity. It seemed like almost everything required an ID anymore.

He shook his head again, managing to look mournful, even if it was only for a moment, "No stories means no history, and that's just a sad sad situation." He followed easily in his brother's wake, nodding at the suggestion of ID, "Aye, was thinking that myself, has to be someone here who knows their way around it." A shrug, "Seems like most people here are working one way or another."

The crooked little smile returned, "Don't suppose Kansas is a mob hot spot, so s'not like we can use our usual source of income." He shrugged, "Not too worried about it, be like the old days." Back before they'd gotten jobs at the plant, back when their main source of income was odd jobs and bar bets.

"Do you think we're going to need a green card or something?" It wasn't like they could do anything - legally - that would require a complicated hiring process but it had been a while since he'd worked any kind of job that involved a normal paycheck. Eleven years if he went by the date on the calender. "Probably whatever we find would only require us to work and behave ourselves." At least one of those was easily manageable.

Connor laughed. "No, I don't believe it is. Not unless there's more to the farmers than they're lettin' on." On second thought, in this place, that could have been true and not for the reasons they were discussing. He grinned at the memories of those days. "There's enough bars around here to find some money just waiting to be won."

He nodded again, the impish look returning, the one that usually meant trouble for somebody, "Aye, I was thinking that also, always somebody eager to lose a few dollars." A shrug followed, hands in his pockets, it was chilly here, but nothing like the winters that he'd gotten used to in Boston, "And I don't suppose we will, not like we're looking to be ..." He trailed off, trying to come up with a job that would require a green card, finally shaking his head, "Can't think of anything that'd require a green card that a normal ID wouldn't cover, not what we're qualified for."

He fell easily into step beside his brother then, "Suppose we can ask around, people here seem to be working fine, probably know if there's anything open where they are, y'know?" And he was suspecting they wouldn't be stingy with the information, they were all in the same boat after all.

That look he knew well. It was the one that showed up right before someone got hit, a fight broke out, and things got broken. Even though Connor believed in what they were doing, there were still things he missed. He hadn't been in a proper bar brawl since the one that had sent events into motion. The kind they walked away from with a black eye or a busted lip, not where the bar was riddled with bullets and bodies were on the floor.

"Of course. Going to have to pay for the bar tabs somehow." And with Doc in another place altogether, the occasional free drink wouldn't be happening either. Not until they found somewhere new to become regulars of at least. "One of them have to know if there's something around. There's enough of them."

As they exited the complex, Connor buttoned up his coat. "The day I ended up here, it was September. Then I'm standing in snow. Almost enough to make me a believer alone."

"June for me." He said, realizing once again just how out of sync they were, though at the same time it didn't matter because they weren't and it was enough to give him a headache if he thought about it too hard, so he stopped, giving a quick little shake of his head, "First order of business, get something to eat and get as drunk as we can on what's left, after that, find a job." He liked when things were simple like that, it made everything easier in the long run.

He was keeping an eye on landmarks as they passed, already doing what he could to learn the new neighborhood, he'd done the same thing on his way there from the library. He didn't like being lost, and he never had, but he also didn't particularly care for maps, because they just weren't as reliable as people would like to think.

"Only a week." He'd spent the first day sleeping and then the next couple trying to figure out if what he was being told was true. Christmas night he'd gotten out to escape whatever had been piped through the sound system in the building when a couple of the residents had taken leave of their sanity. "I've been borrowing from the kitchen when I got hungry."

So wherever looked good, cheap, and served alcohol, it was going to be his pick. When his brother's shoulder bumped his, he gave him a light shove back. At that moment, his stomach chose the time to grumble, his hunger momentarily forgotten in the midst of flying snow.

A few blocks over, he spotted a sign swinging over the doorway to a little place advertising spirits and food. He nudged his brother in the arm, pointed up at the sign, and then headed for the door, heading inside.

"Oh I see how it is." He said, smiling crookedly once more, "Just can't bear to drag yourself outside without me." He clapped Connor's back then, "Well good for you I showed up then, otherwise you'd never get any socializing done. Wallflower." Was added as a parting shot, but it was still as gentle a tease as he ever used.

He nodded at the building, eying it almost suspiciously a moment, the same as he did with any new place, but he followed Connor inside all the same, deciding almost instantly that he liked it, it was warmly lit, almost cozy, and the best part was that there wasn't a family dinner in sight, which meant that they wouldn't have to hear someone else's unruly children while they ate, and that was always a plus.

The answer came in the form of Connor's fist launching into Murphy's arm. "The hell you talking about? I have no problems being social. Wouldn't even have to leave the building to do it." There were plenty of people around to speak to and that message board thing on top of it, even if it was a form of communication Connor was still getting used to. "Wallflower." He snorted.

Inside was a welcome relief to the chill outside. He stomped his boots inside to knock loose the clumps of snow. A sign on the wall ordered that everyone seated themselves so he headed over to a nearby table and dropped into one of the chairs. Small crowd but most of them seemed to be up at the bar, watching some sports game on the television.

Grabbing the small laminated menu from the stand in the middle of the table, he took a look at what the kitchen had to offer.

"Oh fine." He said, rolling his eyes as he dropped into the other chair, kneading at his slugged arm for a moment, Connor still had the sharpest knuckles of anyone he'd met, "You're mister popular, how could I have forgotten?" Any other time the fight would have escalated, and probably wouldn't have stopped until somebody drew blood, and maybe not even then, but some things were more important, dinner being one of them.

He snapped up one of the menus himself, looking it over, it seemed to be their usual fare, and that was good for him, made him feel just a little less out of place. He shrugged then, dropping it back into the holder, "Cheeseburger sounds like it'd about hit the spot."

"Maybe I hit you too hard with that snowball," Connor suggested dryly as he read down the menu. Being the typical bar menu, there wasn't much of a variety, but he didn't care as long as it was a warm meal. He'd been thinking about getting the same thing when Murphy spoke up first. "That's just what I was thinking."

He glanced up at the waitress as she approached, smiling. She returned it, looking a little weary. Must have been a long day. "What can I get for you guys?" she asked, flipping to a clean page on her notepad.

"I'll have the cheeseburger and whatever you've got on tap," Connor replied, reaching over to slide the menu back into the clip as the waitress turned to his brother.

"'course. That's it, concussion." He was about to say more when the waitress arrived, he smiled at her as well, because he knew how hard they worked, and it looked like she'd been working hard all day, "I'll have the same." He said, shrugging, "We like to keep it simple."

Once she was gone again he shrugged out of his coat, hanging it over the back of his chair, it was much warmer inside than it was outside, and he didn't much need it at the moment. He gave the place another once-over before shrugging again and settling back in his seat, "Don't seem like there's a lot of trouble we can get into here." He was almost disappointed by that, but only almost.

Simple was one way of putting it. Connor had never gotten why people paid thirty dollars for a meal that barely took up the center of the plate when they could pay five for a basket full of fries and a burger. Waste of good money that could be used elsewhere, like a bar tab.

He grinned at his brother's appraisal of the bar. "It doesn't look like a place for it, does it?" He glanced over his shoulder at the bar again, the patrons, the bartender, the waitress pouring their drinks after putting in the order. The place didn't seem like it saw a fight more than once every year and probably nothing more than two guys trying to settle a difference over a game. They could probably start something that would put that to shame.

"Nothing wrong with a quiet night tonight. I haven't heard any good redneck jokes in a while."

He arched a brow at that, he'd thought they were trying to stay out of trouble, at least until they had some sort of paperwork stating that they belonged there, but he was willing to roll with it however it fell down. So he shrugged, sitting back in his chair, "Well what's the last one you heard? Wouldn't want to repeat any."

He could keep an eye on the bar and the few other patrons over his brother's shoulder, which had always been his job, really, watching Connor's back when he did something potentially reckless and/or stupid. Mostly it was Murphy's job because Connor did the same for him, except when it would be funnier not to, or when Connor knew he could take care of himself.
