“This place, as far as I’ve been able to tell, is the best deli in town.”
Danny and Cissie were both seated in a little booth at a small deli, waiting for their food to be finished. The place was as good as Danny claimed, although whether it was the best or not was something she’d have to decide for herself.
For the past couple hours, Danny had played tour guide. He’d shown her a few coffee shops, a couple of places he’d heard were hiring – restaurants, stores, that sort of thing – and also made sure to point out all the safety and law enforcement areas, in case she ever needed them. He’d also pointed out a couple clubs, although he’d been honest with her about now knowing whether she’d be able to get in any of them or not. He’d made sure to stay away from his place of employment. He didn’t think Cissie would much care about a strip joint, and even if she did, there was no way in hell he was going to point that one out to her. He was pretty sure she wouldn’t be able to get in, anyway.
Then it was time for lunch, and he’d taken her here. He hadn’t recommended anything, just smiled and told her the surprise was half the fun, and ordered a ham-and-cheese sub for himself. He was a man of simple tastes. His rule of thumb, and it had come up more than once back in Brooklyn when he’d been dating Stacy, was that if he couldn’t read the menu, he wouldn’t eat there. This place had a menu that was entirely readable. It was also a very healthy size, and even boasted a few veggie meals for those that liked that kind of thing.
