Who: George Weasley and Hermione Granger
Where: Hermione's home
When: Noonish, Wednesday
What: George comes to help Hermione set up wards, and probably gossip about Ron.

George ran a hand through his messy red hair in an attempt to make himself look more presentable and he approached Hermione's flat. He was pretty sure he was going to get some sort of lecture over his rumpled condition anyway, but he might as well try to control the damage. At least his clothes were clean, if a bit wrinkled. He still looked like he hadn't slept in a couple of days.

Pausing in front of the door he was pretty sure belonged to Hermione, he gave it a few loud knocks. Maybe he could charm her with his dazzling smile.

Hermione was trying to keep herself occupied, and the only thing she could think to keep her moving was cooking. So she'd to make a pizza or two for lunch; an old recipe her mum had taught her a while back. Reading would require sitting still, and she didn't want to sit around. It would lead to worrying. She'd made more than enough pizza knowing that at least one Weasley was stopping by that day. Just as she'd taken one of the pizzas out of her oven, she heard a knock on the door. Looking through the small hole, she once again saw a familiar red head, but not Ron. This time it was another Weasley: George.

"Hello, George." She greeted him with a smile, though her concern was clear by her tone of voice and the look in her eye. "Thanks for coming." Hermione hadn't been able not to notice his rough appearance. "You alright?" She gave him a questioning look as she made room for him to come it.

"Hey, Hermione," George flashed her his most winning smile as he moved inside the flat, closing the door behind him. "Course I'm all right. Just a little hungover," He admitted with a chuckle.

"And there's no need to thank me. Can't have the most brilliant witch in London being left alone and unprotected now can we? Merlin knows we'd all fall apart without you around to keep us sane. Especially Ron," he tried not to smirk as he added that last bit on.

"Something smells absolutely delicious," he blinked, suddenly noticing the tantalizing aroma drifting in from the kitchen. "Are you cooking?"

She tilted her head, looking at him. "You could have slept longer if you needed to, I would've been alright." She took a few steps further into the flat. "I have aspirin if you need it."

Hermione smiled at his comment, but couldn't help but blush when he added in the last bit about Ron. "I'd probably fall apart myself if I wasn't around to keep you all in place." She said, her tone total humor.

"Yes, I am." She shrugged. "I needed something to do, so I made pizza. Kept in mind that at least one Weasley was stopping over today." She laughed. "Suppose I really am smart." Hermione herself had witnessed time and time again how much a Weasley boy could eat.

"I had much more important things to attend to than sleeping," George waved his hand dismissively. She didn't have to know he'd been having trouble sleeping.

"Well, we're all more than happy to give you something to dote on and fret over," he chuckled. "You're not quite as scary as mum is about it."

"Always prepared. I like that in a woman," George flashed her another smile. "Expecting more than one Weasley, huh? Ron planning on dropping by?"

"I'm glad to fret over what you give me," Hermione laughed. "But it's good to know I'm not at that level yet." As much as Hermione liked Mrs. Weasley, she hoped she'd never be as scary as her; or, at least, not for a long time.

"You know me, George, I'm always prepared." She said, flashing a smile in response. "He might be," She added on, blushing a little. "I haven't talked to him yet today, he's been very busy with the search for Hannah," Hermione sighed at the thought, "but there's a chance he could." She shrugged a little; since Ron and her had become a twosome she saw him more. "He'd definitely stop by if I told him there was food I needed to get rid of."

Hermione walked over to her stove and took out the second pizza. "Would you like some, George?"

George's smile wavered a little when Hermione mentioned Hannah and suddenly remembered why he was here; to make sure the same thing didn't happen to the girl in front of him. He'd brushed up on some of his spells the night before and was pretty confident in his ability to keep her protected, at least while she was at home.

"Knowing Ron he's already smelled it and is on his way now," he chuckled.

"I'd love some. But I should take care of business first, before I get distracted by food and forget why I'm here," he nodded, crossing his arms as he looked around the room. "I was thinking maybe a Caterwauling Charm to let you know if someone was approaching the flat, but it would just go off whenever anyone got close and that might get bothersome pretty fast if you're expecting company often..."

Hermione smiled. "I wouldn't be completely surprised." She laid the pizzas out to cool, nodding in agreement with him about getting his work finished first. As he continued speaking, she returned to the main room where George was standing.

A Caterwauling Charm was a good idea, though Hermione couldn't help but pause at George's last comment. She put her hands on her hips, thinking about it for a moment. "I don't think I'd mind too much. There aren't too many people who come here too often..." She started as she bit her lip, a habit she'd taken up again lately. Ron, certainly. Harry came over from time to time, maybe Ginny?

George knew Hermione wasn't exactly a social butterfly, but he'd figured he'd at least throw it out there. "Well as long as you don't think you'll mind, we'll do that then."

He mirrored her stance, putting his hands on his own hips while he thought of more precautions they could take. "We could do an Impervius Charm on all the doors and windows... Protego Horribilis, Protego Totalum, and Salvio Hexia should all help keep the place pretty secure..."

He paused for a moment, chewing thoughtfully on his lower lip. "We should set something up so you'll be able to call for help quickly if you need to, too. Maybe a Taboo? that way all you'll have to do is say the word and we'll know right away."

"Good." Was Hermione's short reply. As George continued speaking and making more suggestions she nodded and gave him a small smile. "It all sounds good to me. I think I'm going to feel much better knowing they're around."

She paused and looked around the room. "Do you think everyone's magic will come back?" Hermione sighed, walking over to one of the windows and seemingly inspecting the latches on it. "I feel so...useless without it."

George wouldn't admit it, but he was pleased with himself for coming up with things Hermione thought were good ideas. That didn't happen too often.

"I'm sure it will," George nodded, though he really had nothing to back that up with. "I mean, I don't know why it's gone or anything... but magic can't just up and disappear, right?"

"Normally I'd agree with you, George, but every time I try to perform a spell and it doesn't work..." She trailed off, shrugging. Hermione couldn't help wondering what would happen if her magic never came back. She turned towards him. "Do you think someone could have done something to take people's magic away?"

"I suppose it's possible," George shrugged a little. "But I don't know how they'd do it, and why they'd pick who they did." From those he knew of, there didn't seem to be an obvious common thread.

Hermione's brow furrowed. "Maybe it was a place we all went to, or something we ate?" She suggested. "I was speaking to Susan and Padma, and that's what we thought might be the reason." She shrugged. "Sorry. I feel like I'm dumping this on you, and you don't need to stand here listening to me rant." She moved away from her window.

"Anyway." Hermione tried a smile. "How's the rest of your family doing? I haven't really seen anyone except Ron and you lately."

"Maybe," George admitted, looking thoughtful. "But what would you all have in common? Have you done or eaten anything out of the ordinary recently?"

"I don't mind the ranting," He assured her with a charming smile. "Sometimes you've just got to get it all out, yeah? And I know I'd be going crazy if my magic just up and disappeared."

"They're all fine. Mum's fussing over all of us, of course, and trying to get us to all move back into The Burrow so we'll be safe. Even though we're all boys and probably not in danger of losing our magic. Well, except for Ginny, but I think she's man enough to keep safe."

Hermione thought for a moment. "I haven't eaten anything I haven't had sometime before, and I haven't been anywhere new." She couldn't help but feel like she should have had this figured out by now; she cracked puzzles harder than this before. "It feels like a lot has happened lately, but I can't think of anything specific that might be a cause."

George's smile was contagious; one glance at it and Hermione instantly felt one forming. "Yeah, I guess you're right. And I suppose this'll eventually work itself out, one way or another."

"I'm glad to hear everyone's alright. But your Mum has every right to be worried, though you have a point. I doubt any of you boys will lose your magic." She raised an eyebrow. "Good thing, too. Who else would I call to put up wards and all that?" Hermione paused. "Ginny hasn't lost her magic, has she?"

"Hm. Guess that kind of ruins that theory, then." He was sure greater minds than his own had been searching for an answer to this, and since they hadn't found a reason yet he didn't feel too bad about not having one now.

"Right. Even if you don't get it back, you've got a whole army of Weasley boys to tend to your every whim anyhow. you'll be all right," he assured her, glad to see her smiling again.

"Not that I know of, no. I'm sure if she had mum would have had her home and under lock and key by now," he shook his head.

"Maybe." Hermione said with a slight shrug; she still wasn't satisfied, but would think about it later.

The thought of an army of Weasley boys made Hermione laugh. "That's certainly something to look forward to in all this." She grinned. "I honestly don't know what I would do without you Weasleys." It was true; Hermione didn't see her parents that much these days, and even when she was back at Hogwarts the Weasley family had become very like a second family to her. "I'm glad Ginny didn't get affected by this." Hermione added.

"So." She said, looking around her flat. "About these wards. Where do you think we should begin?" Hermione knew George probably had other things to do that day, and though she liked his company, she felt bad keeping him.

"I am too. For Ginny's sanity's sake, anyway. One week at home with mum would drive her batty, I'm sure," George nodded.

"Well, the charms and things won't take too long," he reasoned, looking around the room again. "What sort of word do you think we should use for the taboo, though? Something you'll remember, but not very common so I won't be getting false alarms all over the place..."

"I can only imagine."

Hermione tilted her head; what would be a good word? This was tricky; a word she could remember, but wasn't prone to using. "It can't be obvious...or something people who come over use, unless they were an intruder..." She sighed and started tapping her fingers. "This may sound odd, but what about something like...mudblood? Or a similar term?" She continued without pausing. "I know you don't like it, but logically it works. The only people who would use it are people I don't want here. And there's no chance I'd mistakenly say it."

George frowned at the mention of the word 'mudblood,' but nodded slowly when she continued to explain. "I suppose you've got a point," he admitted reluctantly. "I just hate that word."

"But, it should serve this purpose," he nodded, pulling his wand out of his pocket. "Now if I can just remember how to do the spell..." He'd read up on some protective spells before coming over, he just had to sort out which words went to what.

With a bit of help from Hermione, he managed to set up the Taboo and several other ward around her home. when he was satisfied that she'd be safe and sound, he put his wand away again. "There... that ought to do it."

Hermione gave a short nod. "I understand; I hate it too, which is why I'll only use it under necessary circumstances."

She was very pleased with all the work that'd been done. "I don't think anyone will have to worry about me now," She commented with a smile. "and I feel a lot safer now. I can't thank you enough."

"Well I'm sure we'll still worry about you. Especially Ron," George winked mischievously. "But at least you can feel safe when you're home alone, yeah?"

"No need to thank me," he assured her, shaking his head. "Just doing my duty as a gentleman. Though I would accept a slice of that pizza now..."

Hermione gave George a knowing smile. "Yeah, I don't suppose there's much to be done to get Ron to calm down. It amazes me how he can get so worked up sometime." She shrugged. "But at least I'll feel better."

"You've been quite the gentleman, George." She headed back into the kitchen, grabbed a couples plate and started cutting pizza. "You can have more than a slice. Help yourself."

"He's always been pretty high-strung. I think he gets it from mum. Maybe Percy," George nodded knowingly.

"I do try," He smirked, rummaging around in her cabinets until he located the dishes. He grabbed one for himself, and one for Hermione. "Mm. I might eat them both if you don't stop me."

Hermione gave a small laugh. "Maybe." She shifted slightly in a thoughtful manner. "Though I do feel bad that he's on duty so much lately. I mean..not that I don't want them found or anything. It's just put a lot of stress on him."

She accepted the dish he'd grabbed with a smile and finished cutting. "I probably wouldn't put up much of a fight; I'm hardly hungry at all. Besides, I could just make more if I wanted. Just don't make yourself sick."

"Yeah. I'm sure Ron's made it his personal mission to find them and bring them back all by himself, even if it kills him in the process," George snorted.

"My dear girl, with all the crazy tings I've eaten in the name of good pranks over the years, I don't think overindulging in a little pizza is going to do me in," He assured her with a smile, loading a couple slices onto his plate.

"I have no doubt he has made it a personal mission," Hermione said rolling her eyes. "But I'd rather he didn't kill or hurt himself in the process. I prefer him in his current state."

Hermione laughed. "Well, I trust your judgment. Fill up then, and make sure you put a few slices aside for Fred."

"His current state's so boring, though," George protested with a wrinkle of his nose. "I guess it's better than the alternative of being dead, though."

"Or I could just eat a few slices in his honor," George said, taking a bite and chewing thoughtfully for a moment. "This is delicious, Hermione. Where'd you learn to cook?"

Hermione paused thoughtfully at George's comment. "From my perspective he manages to keep things quite interesting." She gave a slightly shrug and smiled. "But then again, compared to spending your time experimenting and working in a joke shop, what wouldn't seem boring?"

"I'll just put a few aside for him then." Hermione commented in a knowing tone as she grabbed an extra plate and put a few slices on it. "You wouldn't expect it, since she's a dentist, but my mum is a wonderful cook." She leaned on the counter in a reminiscent manner. "Over the years, when I wasn't at school or staying with your family, she'd teach me. I'm glad you like it."

"True. I live quite an exciting life," George smirked, finishing off his first slice of pizza and moving onto his second.

"You're right. I wouldn't think dentists would know how to make such delicious food. Anything that tastes this good must be horrid for you," George nodded knowingly. "Do you see your parents often?"

"Not many people would; most don't think of them outside the office." Hermione shrugged slightly. "But it's not too horrible to have."

Hermione stood up. "Not terribly often. I used to see them more around the time I finished school, but with these regulations about muggle contact with the wizarding community, there's only so much time I'm allowed." She sighed; it bothered Hermione, being told how often and how long she could talk to her parents just because they were muggles. "I will, however, and regardless of any ridiculous rules, be going to see them, for however long I'd like, in about a month or so for my mum's birthday."

"That's pretty awful," George frowned a little. He couldn't imagine being told when he could and couldn't see his family. "Good for you. Screw them and their stupid rules. I mean, they're your parents for Merlin's sake."

"You know you're always welcome at our place if you ever get to missing them, though," he informed her, going back to his pizza. "Not just mum's either. I promise Fred and my's place isn't too dangerous. We try to keep the living room presentable at least."

Hermione gave a nod; the rules instated by the Ministry were awful. That was part of the reason she went into law: to try to change laws, such as the ones mentioned, that were flawed or unfair. "Thank you. I'm certainly not going to let them intimidate me. Especially since I work in our Law Enforcement Department."

A smile spread across Hermione's face at George's offer. "Thank you, I appreciate it. I do miss them sometimes, and it's nice to know should I want some company I have places to go: Ron's, your place, your mum's, other friends' flats." She picked at the edge of her plate. "It's quite comforting. And you know you're welcome here as well, George. You and Fred."

"You should have it pretty easy then, yeah? Having an in at the Ministry and all. no one'll bother you for breaking a rule now and then," he shook his head. It must be nice, he reasoned.

"We're glad to have you," he smiled warmly at Hermione. "But you really shouldn't offer that. You don't know what you're getting yourself into. You've seen the way we eat. And do everything, really. Your home would be demolished within a week."

"I suppose, just as long as what I did was nothing too drastic or I'd lose my job." Hermione mused. "But, you know, if you're ever in need of a hand in anything concerning the Ministry, you should let me know. Think of it as having your own in."

She shook her head. "I can't accept your offer without returning it." She replied, her tone implying her mind would not be changed. "Besides, I would make you clean up any mess you made as soon as you made it. Not to mention how interesting things would be."
