Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
It was the night of the highly anticipated opening of Balthazar, the place to see and be seen. Unassuming waiters and waitresses glided through the glittering, mingling crowd, discreetly circulating hors d'oeuvres and flutes of champagne. The gorgeous, intimate interior of the trendy restaurant lounge sprawled open into a stunning patio over facing the North Sea. The sun was setting and the sky was washed in streaks of hot vibrant pink and soft pale lavender. Every witch and wizard was glowing with pleasure - the place was amazing.

Dressed in an inky purple backless dress that Spencer would have loved and hated to see her wear, Bredina Dunstan's clear blue eyes lit up when she saw her friend arrive.

Also without a date.

Or rather, not a date, but rather her rightful date. Both of their significant others were working late at the office. But men be damned, the girls weren't going to pass up this brilliant night.

"Knock on wood, because there's always one out there, but I think it might be safe to say that there's not a single creep here tonight!" she announced proudly, handing Parvati Patil a flute of champagne.

To reward herself in order to stave off the raging disappointment that took over if Draco could not be by her side, Parvati had taken to wearing her dresses with hemlines her husband would never have let her wear out had he been present. He would inevitably know, of course, but he had no defense - he knew how much it dampened her spirit when he was working late.

Tonight she wore white, ready for the impending summer.

"Yum." She greeted, taking the flute with a smile, her eyes running down the figure of her best friend with an appraising eye. "Well, don't worry, I'm sure your perfect back will have one who is hiding in the woodwork to worm his way over eventually."

Hopping up onto a stool beside the glistening chrome table Bredina had been seated at, Parvati took a delicate sip - her nose wrinkling as the bubbles jumped at it. "So what is Spencer working on, again?"

With only the tiniest hint of guilt, Bredina shrugged. "I'm not really sure. Some project. I've sort of stopped listening." Smiling easily, she took another sip of champagne. "You look beautiful though," she added sincerely. She didn't want to spend the night focusing on Spencer, wondering if he really did have to stay at the office that night, wondering if he was really that overwhelmed with work-- or if he merely deemed it more important than her. Sometimes she wondered if she was instinctively his first priority, or if work was. Spencer and Dina were at the point in their relationship where Dina felt confident as the "First Lady" in his life. But as a priority against everything else? Hmm...

Although she found the fact that he played football appealing, her spirits were always dampened slightly when he committed to his weekly game with more devotion than he ever seemed to give to her. He just COULDN'T miss his game. But he HAD to miss a date sometimes. It seemed unfair.

Pursing her lips so she wouldn't sigh, she tilted her head at Parvati.

"What about Draco?"

"Don't lie." Parvati frowned, "You wouldn't have stopped listening. You always listen - even to me when I go on and on." Fiddling with an ivory napkin, Parvati pulled a bit at its edges, "Spencer really does love his work, doesn't he? But he's done so well for himself, and you know what that'll mean-" Like an imp she leaned forward and tapped Dina's ring finger with a grin.

It was sort of an understanding that Spencer would never have proposed to Dina until he felt as if his own personal fortune was substantial enough to hobnob with the purebloods. Though, according to Wozorgs - the yearly publication of wizarding society's wealthiest, the Capper family had, for once, broken through. Yet, Spencer showed no signs of slowing down.

"Hm. He had to stay late. The CEO of one of the companies we invest in just died and it's thrown the entire future of the company into question." She tapped her glass, "But you know," Parvati shrugged awkwardly, eyes not meeting Dina's, "I don't get why it even matters really. You know how much money the Malfoys have - Draco needn't lift a finger, really. I don't understand why he can't just ... relax a bit." He had relaxed of course, the entire year after their marriage Draco had cut back work hours to spend time with his needy, loving wife - an extended honeymoon of sorts - but reality always had a nasty way of coming back in.

Parvati rather preferred her fairytale, thank you very much.

"I'm serious," Dina replied, and she was. Spencer was always so enthused about his work, and would carry on and on. He used buzz words like synergy and alignment, waving his hands animatedly, eyes filled with excitement. She had sincerely stopped listening, though. Perhaps she was being dramatic, but she felt like the last time he was so enthused about her was at Hogwarts. Unsure of how fair she was being, she accepted a chocolate strawberry from a passing waiter.

She listened to her friend's plight and touched her arm sympathetically.

"I suppose they share that trait... They're very typical like that, always wanting more." She fidgeted with the stem of her glass. "It's what we love about them." She refrained from adding a hesitant Right?

But of course Dina loved that Spencer was so ambitious. She wanted him to be just as ambitious about her though. That was the battle of witches everywhere though, right? Once their man had "conquered" them, it was off to find other things to conquer. Work was a never ending source of challenge, whereas it was hard to keep that spark alive in a romantic relationship.

Hoping to feel a bit better from the chocolate, she surveyed the crowd.

"Have you talked to him about relaxing?"

While Dina accepted a solitary strawberry, Parvati waved the waiter over and asked for him to leave the plate. Giving a cute smile she began to eye the most chocolatey covered strawberries for ingestion.

"Yes-" Parvati returned unsurely, "But it's different. At least you're working, Dina. I'm not and although I thought that would be super fun ... I don't know ... I get bored. I don't want to be that pureblood housewife who is completely useless with things. You know, when you get busy with work, Spencer acts like a sick toddler whinging all the time. Draco will never know what it feels like for me to have a life that operates outside of him."

Glancing around the cheery crowd, Parvati pouted, "We are so depressing right now."

"Maybe," Dina conceded, wishing Spencer was pining after her right now. She hoped that he was sitting in his dark, lonely office, wishing that he was holding her in his arms instead. Instead he was probably having some lively debate with a coworker, blood pulsing, having the time of his life. Or something like that.

"What about when you organize those charity events?" Dina asked, trying to imagine a puppy like Draco Malfoy.

"I know," Dina sighed. "We are. I just can't help it. This place is so beautiful, and it's getting dark and the stars are so romantic... and we're too old to flirt with other wizards and feel okay about it." Jutting out her bottom lip, she frowned.

"I just hate that feeling, y'know? That you miss them more than they miss you."

"No." Parvati shook her head, "Draco doesn't operate like that. He's not the 'missing' type. He feels jealousy if other men are involved but other than that, nothing. Spencer is much more obvious with how he feels with you, Dina. You're so lucky. That one time when you were gone for a week he bummed around our house all the time, so listless."

"OLD?!" It was the wrong thing to say to Parvati who's posture immediately became impeccable. "Bredina, I am not old. In fact, someone asked me the other day why I wasn't at Hogwarts for the school term! We are still so cute and young and can flirt with men anytime we want-" She looked around the room until she was satisfied that upon catching her eye, at least three young men smiled back. "I feel fine about it." A lie. Afterall, when the creeps came acalling, Parvati would give them icy looks and shy behind Dina who was the friendlier of the two.

She began her second glass of champagne with a bit of a chip on her shoulder. "Yes. Though I think for sure I love Draco more than he does me, so it's not a surprise for me." Parvati wrinkled her nose, "Welcome to my world, darling."

"Well he was also sick with no one to take care of him," Dina reminded Parvati. "And Draco's made it very clear how much he loves you." There was no romance quite like Parvati and Draco's.

Dina smiled at Parvati's outburst. She used to never care about chatting with other blokes-- not because she had ever been a spiteful witch, but just because she saw it as harmless. It was only after dating Spencer where she realized that you don't do that if you care deeply about someone else.

At that moment, the three young wizards made their way over to the pretty witches just as a Mr. Malfoy and Mr. Capper entered the premises.

"Please," Parvati sniffed, "I'm still not sure if Spencer had a flu or just an dramatic allergy to you being away. And you have to admire him, he missed you so much that he willingly whinged on even knowing that Draco would hold it against him." A smile crossed her face at Dina's comment and her lips pursed in thought. She had waited so long for her prince, the fact that he came around was constantly a source of girlish excitement for her. "Yes, I know he does."

As the three wizards approached from all different angles, Parvati's eyes widened and she stared at Dina. Merlin, she hated creepos ... well actually ... oh, they were quite good looking. An unwilling blush took her cheeks -

"Hello-" The first, a brunette introduced calmly.

"I thought you two might want a drink-" The second, a blonde dropped two flutes of champagne onto their table before frowning at the other man.

"Oh, uh, hang on. Are you one of their boyfriends?" The third, a little slower than the others asked as he approached.

"Well, if you're not-" The first frowned, "Then I'd like to tell you to step off-"

"You shouldn't be harrassing these two lovely ladies." The second gave a pompous stare at the others.

Parvati gave Dina an awkward glance. Well, this was weird.
