It was a fact: Parvati Patil had done a beautiful job of organizing her first charity ball. Resplendent in a deep red chiffon dress that made her look like a tall, refreshing, glass of water, she was glowing from all the praise being dropped on her that night. The event was to raise money to help find a cure for Dragonpox, and the twist on the regular dinner and dance was that the theme was Christmas in July. Everything was in red and greens, decked with tinsel, and sparkling brightly as tiny fairies darted here and there dropping little wrapped chocolates in the laps of the guests and honorees.

It had been hard, getting everything together. Hard for a number of reasons including the recent issues she had been having with her beau, Jacob Brandon. Jacob was a graduated Healer, now working at his family’s company (Brandon Corporations) which dealt with top notch wizarding medical research and supplies. He had been a breath of fresh air after Draco and Parvati had broken up. Although their love was not nearly as intense, his light-heartedness, his distance from the dark arts and his ability to smile at her just so, had certainly put her on the road to recovery. Unfortunately, while Draco had never put first when it came to his family history, Jacob never put her first when it came to work. So, increasingly, as Jacob’s attention grew less, Parvati had spent nights worrying over her problem … wondering why no one ever loved her the way they wrote about in storybooks.

But, it seemed all her worries were to be in vain, for as she stood talking to the auctioneer, Jacob appeared behind her and with a soft smile asked her to join him for a moment. Nodding, a little curious, Parvati followed him to the balcony (though it gave them very little privacy due to its open six door entranceway).

“Parvati, I’ve been waiting awhile to say a few things to you. You…You are incredible, I mean it. I can’t begin to tell you how proud I am of you. Beauty and brains, what a combo – I mean, since the moment we met, I fell head over heels in love with you. I know I don’t tell you nearly enough, but, well-“ Jacob coughed and before her very eyes dropped to one knee, opening a small velvet box containing a beautiful diamond ring, “Parvati, will you marry me?”

Gasps and titters of excited laughter came from the doorway where some of the guests were huddled, having sensed the possibility of gossip as the young couple had taken their leave to the balcony.

“Jake, oh my god-“ Parvati began, her eyes welling. To be honest, she had always thought that upon proposal, her entire being would have screamed YES YES YES in response. This …this wasn’t quite that. But… it was pleasant. Yes, very pleasant. Especially since her past boyfriend, Draco, had looked ill upon any mention of marriage.

But before any words could leave her mouth, the familiar BEEP of his pocket fireplace rang through the air. She watched in disbelief as Jacob reached into his pocket, pulling out the small square box and checked it.

“Darling, I need to take this.” His hands clasped around hers, pressing the ring into her hand, “I know you would want time to think about it anyway.” Jacob kissed her hands, “I don’t want to rush you, goddess. You think and you tell me when I come to pick you up later tonight.”

Parvati could barely form a word before he gave her a long kiss on the mouth (that had their audience cooing) and left.

Had he honestly taken a business call during his proposal? Unsure of what to do, or even what to think, Parvati was almost robotic as some of their audience rushed toward her, having not heard the words, but only the actions.

“Oh the ring is beautiful! Put it on! Put it on!”
“Such a lucky girl!”
“You’re very lucky, dear, he’s quite a catch!”
“At least Four Carats! Oh if only!”

Pretty soon the rumor that Jacob Brandon had proposed to Parvati Patil had wound its way around the ball, fuelled by the glittering diamond that adorned her ring finger and the glazed look on her face which must have been true, blissful happiness.
