Tag to darling Daph!
Who: Demelza and Daphne
Where: Bar in London
When: Evening
What: Dem and Daph commiserate about not being able to do anything.
Rating: PG? PG-13?

Demelza hunched over a little more, brooding in the dark corner of 11Oak, the newest, chicest bar in London. Cupping her vodka and tonic grimly, she took another rather unladylike slurp, not really caring how she looked any more. Her magic was gone, for Merlin's sake, so why should other bothersome things like her appearance matter?

However, in her designer leather jacket and slim black pants, she was looking quite pulled together, and couldn't help priding herself on the little things that she did do for herself... even in the midst of such a crisis.

Someone slid casually into the bar seat next to her, and without even looking up, she knew who it was. "Hi, darling," she said quietly, draining her drink and motioning to the bartender for another.

Daphne had not been chipper or anything close to the word since the loss of her magic. This had only been worsened by her recent visit from Seth Moon. She had hoped that seeing her former lover would cheer her up, and, to some extent, hearing that he was there for her even if she turned into a squib had helped a bit. But their foolish squabble about their relationship had wiped what little hope she had away rather quickly. She had not seen Seth since, had said maybe three words to him over journals, and, quite frankly, it was beginning to wear on her a bit. Seth Moon was one of the few people Daphne did not want to push away, and she had done it without the aid of magic in a matter of fifteen minutes.

"Hi," Daphne murmured weakly, sliding into the available seat with a sigh. She had her own drink in her hand, already half gone. She had never been much of a drinker, but sometimes there were just some situations when even the most proper ladies needed to get their minds of off things. "How are you, Demmie?"

Demelza cast a sideways look at her clearly downtrodden friend from under her mass of blonde curls, sizing up the situation. The two were practically sisters, and she could read Daphne's otherwise impassive face like a book she herself had written. "I'm better than you seem, doll. Spill it."

"This whole 'no magic' thing is really trying," she said, pushing a golden lock behind her ear with a sigh. "I'm bloody sick of it. They'd better fix it soon."

She supposed she should have known that Demelza was going to see right through her. She wasn't entirely sure how she did it, but the girl had always been able to read her like a bloody book. "Seth Moon. That's enough of an explanation in itself." And with that, she finished off her drink.

Her nose crinkled at Demelza's blatant admittance to her lack of magic. Daphne was certainly not going to be broadcasting that fact in public any time soon. As far as anyone knew, aside from Demelza, Adrian, and Seth, Daphne was still her usual pureblood princess self. "I wouldn't get your hopes up. I haven't heard anything about progress lately."

"Seth Moon? What happened with Seth Moon, exactly?" A scowl marred Demelza's remarkable features, and her right hand curled into a fist. "Should I take care of him for you?"

Demelza cast another knowing glance at her friend. Demelza saw no point in denying it anymore, but she knew perfectly well Daphne was affected by this as well, and would never admit it. Ever. It was the pureblood way to pretend everything was going normally, even when it wasn't. In a low voice, she said, "I know you're not doing well with it either. At least we're not alone."

As another drink arrived in front of her, Daphne let out a rather pathetic sigh. "I invited him over," she muttered bitterly. "My first mistake."

Miss Greengrass frowned at the notion that she was somehow not alone in her plight. "Not alone?" she drawled back in hushed tones. "Other than you, Demmie, I can assure you I have never been so completely and utterly alone in my entire life. If people find out-" She shuddered at the thought.

Demelza raised a hand at the bartender as well. Might as well get rip roaring drunk to celebrate her current situation.

"And then what? I need all the information," Demelza said curtly, downing some of her drink. "You know. So I can put out a hit on him, and all." She smirked.

A wave of guilt for backing Daph into a corner and making her admit it rushed over Demelza. She laid a hand on her friend's forearm, her forehead crinkling. "I know. I know, darling. But this will work out. I mean, it has to. Somehow. And I'm your sister, and I'm sticking with you through this whole thing. You know that."

"What was it he said- oh yes, 'Even if you are a squib, you're still too good for me, so it doesn't matter'. I really am an idiot sometimes, Demelza." She let out a bitter laugh at that and took another long sip of her drink.

"Everyone keeps saying that, you know. It'll work out- it has to." Daphne's hopelessness was more apparent then than ever. "Some things don't work out, Demelza. Not everything has a happy ending. Life isn't the fairy tale some would make it out to be."

Demelza's lip curled as her knuckles simultaneously whitened on her glass. "Ugh. What a disgusting little cretin he is. I should bloody well tear him apart. Without magic."

Demelza sighed quietly. "I know. Trust me. I get hopeless. A lot. I'm not usually an optimistic type of person. So when I am, you know I'm really fucking trying here, Daph. Chin up. We're above worrying."

"I still can't believe he married that atrocious woman," she muttered. "Old enough to be his mother, isn't she?"

Daphne let out a bitter laugh. "Sometimes optimism isn't enough, Demmie. But thank you for trying. I do appreciate it."
