Well, wasn't that just something special. Really, that whole bit back there in the barn? That was something special. It was the sort of thing that left the Doctor fuming. He was furious. Couldn't rightfully say who he was so angry with; but, he was pretty darn mad. He'd been walking for a while now, trainer-clad steps nearly pounding on the pavement as he tried to pick a direction. Before he knew it, the Doctor was at the thrift store where he changed his clothes. Out of that suit and into a pair of denims and a sweatshirt. He was soaked to the bone, after all. The trenchcoat for all of it's virtues was far from waterproof. So, he'd found a backpack and put his wet clothes into it before heading out again. Even his hair was smushed down and out of it's rebellious state by the opressive rain.

Deciding a break might be in his best interest, the Doctor slid up under the maquis of the theater trying to duck out of the intermittant rain. He could hide under there for a few minutes and try and root out the cause of his frustration. He hadn't lied. He hadn't done the wrong thing; yet, there he was kicking himself. Most of it was because he should have nipped this entire thing in the bud. He should have ignored Remy LeBeau from day one - then he wouldn't be in this ridiculous predicament. Then there was the trouble with Nine and Jack. Oh, that was enough to make him groan out loud, and that he did, pressing palm to forehead. With the rain keeping everyone in their right mind indoors the Doctor wasn't so worried about being found in this moment of vulnerability and annoyance. This whole thing had gone south so quickly and there was nothing that this Doctor liked less than a situation he didn't have absolute and complete control over. Fantastic.

Sliding down the wall he pulled those knees up and those red Chucks up closer squinting off in the direction of that damned post office. Stupid thing. Plucking out his journal he found that damned survey and started filling it out. It was more important to get reconnected with his fellow captives than be spiteful toward the people in charge of this place.

Saving the world on Christmas day. That was so very much like the Doctor. Never leave a holiday untouched, she figured. Except that year she'd basically disappeared. "I'm sure he did all the hard work," she said with a grin. "I just usually tag along, look cute, and talk sense into him. And pick up strays. I'm good at that one." Adam, Jack, and now Remus? She really did need to stop making a habit of that.

What was she so worried about? It could be years in the future. Years of adventures and excitement and danger before she found herself alone. But then what? How could she go back to living a 'normal' life after seeing the world at the Doctor's side? As it was, those two days she'd been in London, knowing he was out there, thousands of years in the future, alone? It had been miserable.

"Dunno," she said with a shrug. "I just... I dunno. Maybe I'm co-dependent. Or maybe I'm just tired of feeling like an ad for grunge-rock. Nirvana has nothing on me right now." She motioned down to her dingy, wet clothing and her limp hair. "You never did say if we were friends where we met. Were we, doctor?" The lowercase version, but it didn't even occur to him not to call him that.

Saving the world with a lousy satsuma no less; that was very much the Doctor. "Oh, I wouldn't say that," he smiled fondly. She and Jackie had done all the hard work, Rose going on about the Shadow proclamation and other gibberish; she'd tried to very hard to be brave! "I don't think you know just how important you are," he waggled his brow. He always should have told her just how important, and he couldn't help but wonder if later she knew.

His hearts stopped. She'd called him just Doctor then, he'd heard it. Had she? Could she? Did she? He swallowed and pushed himself up a cold chill of panic running down his spine. There was a look of shock that ran across his features before he plucked off those specs and replaced them carefully into his pocket.

"I should go," he spoke more to the floor then Rose. That's right, Miss Tyler, unless you stopped him, John Smith was going running for the hills!

Rose's eyes widened, worry etched in her face. What had she gone and done wrong this time? And why could she not seem to screw up around him? For once, she thought things were okay. He hadn't been that distant sort of man he'd been since she'd met him. Or re-met him, as the case apparently was.

"I'm sorry," she said quietly, placing a hand on his arm. "I...did I say something wrong? Okay, we weren't friends, that's alright! We are now, right?"

Of course she'd take the blame. Rose had no idea the panic that was flitting through his head, and she certainly had no idea that she'd all but stopped not one but two hearts. For all of her thinking and puzzling, she hadn't quite reached the final conclusion yet. She was close. So very, very close. But she just wasn't quite there yet. In her mind, he was only a man who had been upset by what she'd just said.

He'd stepped in it again, Rose; and he was so very, very sorry for it, too. Because he saw that worry that knitted itself between your eyebrows and caused those little wrinkles at the corner of your mouth as your lips turned down. He hadn't meant to get that look - he just knew this whole encounter was a bad idea.

"Best of friends, Rose Tyler," he started, looking her right in the eye. "Trust you with my life. Trust you with anything and everything." He was talking quietly and somehow the rambling man just couldn't manage to stop. "I could never be anything but friends with you, Rose. Wouldn't dream of it." He looked away, pushing down the panic into his belly again.

"And I'm sorry. So very, very sorry." He took a step backward, his bicep out of her grasp then as he tried to force a sad smile for her. "Really I am."

"What're you sorry for? You didn't do a thing." she asked, her voice attempting to sound reassuring. Oh, John Smith, you were a confusing sort. She wanted to like you. Rose wanted to like you so much. Why did you keep moving away from that?

It was obvious he was trying to regain his space, but Rose didn't want him to go thinking she was angry or anything. She wasn't. Just confused. Still. Maybe moreso now, but from him she found she didn't mind it quite so much.

Impulsively, she stepped forward, invading his space once again to reach up and touch his cheek gently. "It's okay. Honest. Whatever's going on, I promise, it's going to be okay. If we were awesome then, we'll be brilliant now." He really was a good-looking sort, with his big brown eyes and that sweet smile of his. Maybe her future self had fancied him and that's why he felt so awkward around her. Poor thing.

"Everything," he nearly whispered. This was hurting him, Rose, and he'd never let you see. He'd shift and push his hands down deep into his pockets and try and reclaim his brave face.

Rose shadowed his movement backward, taking her steps in turn with his own. And then up came that palm to touch his cheek and the Doctor's eyes slipped closed. He'd never got this sort of moment with her and with that thought his eyes flickered open, taking it in. He'd never get this again. Not ever. What would you do if you had a few stolen moments with the person you loved?

"Awesome. Brilliant. Stuff of legend," his voice came back quietly. He'd fancied you, Rose Tyler. Even now, that crazy blue eyed man you followed around the cosmos? He was starting to realize it. too. But, this brown eyed man, he knew; he knew he loved you.

That's why the Doctor took his moment of closeness and he placed a slow, lingering kiss on her lips. He'd never get that chance again. Because when she found out? She'd be furious. She'd want to know if he'd left her. She'd want to know why he'd never told her. So, in that moment he said his 'I love you,' he never got to say on that beach in Norway, and got that good bye kiss that projections denied.

Instinctively, her eyes closed at the brush of his lips on hers. Now? Now she was definitely confused. There was something familiar in that kiss. Something the future Rose had probably reveled in, as if he'd kissed her a thousand times before. And in most scenarios, if a strange man were to snog her in the middle of nowhere, she'd have stepped back and slapped them furiously.

But the hand touching his cheek never made to hit it. Rose's fingers traced the line of his jaw gently before dropping it down to his upper arm. Her eyes fluttered open slowly, and there was a trace of a smile, though confused, on her face. "What was that for?" she questioned, hazel eyes meeting brown.

How close had they been? Were they more than friends in that world he came from? Oh, hell, was that why the Doctor had left her? One too many strays? But this one didn't seem like the others. Not all fascinated by the life among the stars, or already prepared for it as Jack had been. John Smith was still a mystery to her, despite knowing just how soft his lips could be.

And they were. They really, really were. Any prior thoughts of one Mickey Smith had flown far, far out of her head.

He hadn't kissed you a thousand times before. Just once, and technically? Well, it wasn't even you, it was Cassandra inside your body. So, this counted as first kiss, yeah? Brilliant. Because while it might not have been in the setting or in the manner the Time Lord would have preferred; it was still real. It was still Rose's lips against his own and her hand lightly tracing down his jaw and landing on his arm almost to hold him there. Oh, Rose, if he had his way he'd never leave again.

"It was for lost time," a smile held fast to his features looking back and forth between her eyes, trying to root out the confusion. Of course she was confused, she didn't know who you are!

Ask him anything Rose, because right now he might as well be an open book.
