Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:!complete, day 17, jack harkness, location: in town, the doctor (nine), the doctor (ten)

Who:  The Ninth Doctor, the Tenth Doctor, & Jack Harkness
What:  Insight, mourning and questions.
Where: The town-- they'll be moving as they talk.
When: Day 17; About 8:25pm
Rating: PG-13
Status: Complete

It was likely that Ten had wanted to be alone after the murder of his friends Ianto, Sarah Jane, Shannon, and Remy LeBeau.. In fact, Nine knew it would be so. And he, really, wanted to be alone too. He'd left Rose in the care of the werewolf child, which he knew Ten would hate, but he was sure she'd be safe there. The damage had been done for the day. And Nine had started out about the town, not to find time for himself.. but rather, to find himself. He wanted to discuss Sarah Jane. He'd known she was here, he'd talked with her over the journals. But he hadn't met with her. He'd known Jack was here, and he'd avoided him, too. He'd avoided them all. Less for his own sanity, and more for theirs. When this was all over, he was gone. It was done. Why get them all confused and tangled up about it? This regeneration was done. Best to let it die.

But he'd found that he simply couldn't, and he'd written that message to Jack, telling him to meet him at the clock tower around nine. He had half an hour to talk with himself, get things straight and settled, then go back for Jack. You had half an hour to get yourself together, Doctor, and help the people who needed you. You were lucky to even get that. If he knew himself, and he liked to think he knew himself well, he'd definitely be alone somewhere. Somewhere familiar.

The drawing had shown that ginger and Ten in the barn, so that was where the Time Lord headed, his mind still lingering on thoughts of Sarah Jane. His beautiful Sarah Jane.

He stepped into the barn a moment later, hands hanging limply at his sides. When had he gotten so in the habit of pushing his hands into his jacket pockets? He'd seen Ten do that nearly every time he'd spoken with him. Hm.

Spoilers, boys. Spoilers. But neither of them were too concerned at the moment, were they? Nine had turned to look back, to watch the two of them have their little spat, but he decided against saying anything, he was simply taking it all in. For now.

You were lucky you'd gotten him to stop at all, Time Agent. Pick your fights wisely, you had Nine on your side right now.

Jack wanted both Doctors on his side, he didn't want to fight with either one. But as Ten seemed content to keep speaking about Ianto in such a manner, Jack had little to no choice about how he reacted. Really, Ten, you should have known better than to besmirch Ianto's honour about four hours after Jack watched him murdered.

"Yes, we know," Jack replied. "However, do remember that you knew she was still alive," the last word was hissed, Jack's eyes narrowing as he looked at Ten. "I lived for years thinking they all had died not that you had managed to spirit them off to a parallel world. So do not make yourself out to be the martyr here." Jack swallowed hard, his eyes flashing with anger. "Yes, Ianto was a part of it. But in the side that was turned into cybermen trying to fight back. Remember that point."

Almost growling, Jack turned away from Ten and approached Nine, unable to say anything. He knew Nine was on his side, and taking those steps away from Ten felt like he was walking away from the other man at long last.

Ianto would have said it was about time, but the thought was only bitter in Jack's mind. He said nothing when he stopped beside the other Time Lord -- just stood there looking to be the broken man that he was.

The slightly taller Time Lord had been listening intently to the two of them and their pseudo-argument. It had been a strange one at that, one that had revealed a great many things, about Rose, about Jack-- about what was coming. Cybermen. The blue-eyed Doctor lowered them to the ground when that was mentioned, remembering. Considering. Then he looked up again just in time to watch Jack coming towards him, walking away from his older self.

It was strange, to look for comfort in the same man you were walking away from, but really.. they weren't the same man. They were, but they weren't. It was complicated.

But this? This was not. The Doctor watched as Jack came closer, until the other man was standing nearly side-by-side with him, facing away from Ten, while Nine was facing the other Doctor straight on. The two of them standing almost shoulder-to-shoulder. And Nine watched Ten for a long time, feeling that ticking sensation, the tingling sensation right there behind his eye. Jack was a fixed point. It was bothersome, it hurt just to look at him, yet here he was, standing beside him.

And this younger, older-looking Time Lord knew all about loss. He didn't, however, react properly to it. He was much darker, much harder, and much more merciless than his suited counterpart. More so than all of the others who had come before him. He didn't deal as well with people, or companions. He got too angry too easily, or he didn't get angry at all. It was always a grab bag, the sort of emotion you could get from this Doctor.

The Time Lord turned then, he'd come back for you later, Ten.

Once he was once again shoulder-to-shoulder with Jack, and facing the same direction, his hand shifted and gripped onto the Time Agent's. But he didn't say anything, just started walking. It was time to go.

It was only after he finished speaking that Jack realised what he'd said aloud. Well... fuck. He ran a hand through his hair (the hand that wasn't being held by the Time Lord) and tried to put himself back on some sort of an even keel. It was harder than Jack ever would have imagined.

The Doctor was the man who had, in essence, saved Jack. Granted, the man who stood beside him was the one who had pulled Jack from the abyss and made him a better man. It was, however, the man walking away that had cemented that decision completely. Jack was damned no matter which way he looked at it.

Suddenly, Jack found himself mourning not only the loss of his lover, but the loss of a man he had loved for centuries -- even if he was standing near. Damn this paradox. Damn it.

Jack walked, keeping pace with the Ninth Doctor, not saying a word. He knew the other man well enough and knew that he'd break the silence.
