Each character will awaken in a room with another character and will be missing their journals. Each will have their own very comfortable twin bed. The Room is comfortably accommodated and should the subject look into the closets of bureau they will find clothing appropriate to their sense of style and size. Each room has it's own bathroom complete with toilet, tub and shower. Each bathroom is stocked with products the character would be familiar with.

The doors to the five bedrooms all open into a large common area which includes a television (no cable; just a large collection of assorted movies and an X-Box with an assortment of games); a bookcase with various titles and genres; a large sectional sofa; a dining table; and a large kitchen. The Kitchen will have an induction cooktop stove; a large refrigerator; various appliances and copious amounts of fresh foods. The style of this room is contemporary but comfortable. The floors are carpeted and everything is modern.

Clearly, this room is intended to make the subjects comfortable. Conspicuously absent: Windows.

There is an area which is clearly a door; however, it has no handle from the inside. Over this door is a large blue sign "Departure Point." A sign on the door indicates the following.

"Thank you for your participation here at Vas Captio. This area is intended for your use and comfort. Please be mindful to be clean and courteous as this room will be occupied shortly after you leave. Further instructions as to your departure will be included as they become more final. Thank you for your patience."

Sarah Jane rolled over in her bed, and absently grabbed for the sheet to pull it farther up toward her chin. Then, her half-awake brain caught up with what she was doing, and her eyes flew open. Bed. Sheet. Not the hard floor of the museum. A pillow under her head rather than her jacket. Had she...no, she realized as the room came into focus. She wasn't home. She was in a room, tucked snugly in bed. Across from her, she could see a young man in an identical bed.

Someone was playing a cruel joke. They had to be. This couldn't all be real, could it?

Slowly, Sarah Jane slid out of bed, her body protesting the movement. It liked the comfort and wanted to catch a proper nap while it could. Her mind, however, wanted to get a feel for the place, know what she'd ended up in. She opened the first door she found near her bed, and her eyes widened as she found a closet full of clothing that wouldn't look out of place in her own. She looked around, feeling slightly guilty for what she was about to do, then pulled a fresh blouse and pair of jeans out and lay them on the bed. The dresser nearby held clothing of a more delicate nature, also looking to be her size. She sighed at the thought of clean clothing against her skin. After days in the same outfit, she was more than ready for a change.

The second door was an even more welcoming sight: a proper bathroom, fully stocked, towels at the ready. She glanced back at the young man, wondering if she should wake him up before she slipped in for a quick shower. It would be only polite, after all. Perhaps he had more urgent need of it than she did?

Sarah walked around to the other side of her bed and sat down on it, facing the young man. "Hey," she said quietly. "Good morning." At least, Sarah Jane assumed it was morning. There were no windows in the room, so it was difficult to tell.

L dreamed very seldom, and when he did, he usually woke up too quickly to remember the thoughts and images involved. Lately, lying down to sleep had been uncomfortable at best, and so the young man was more sleep-deprived than usual... but in a real bed, he'd gotten an incredibly good night's sleep. And he'd dreamed. He thought that Jenny had been in it, but that didn't make much sense, since he had seen life through the eyes of a sixteen-year-old girl named Kyoko and the only other person in the dream had been a Japanese boy. They went to the same high school. It was August, 1945. They loved each other. They wanted to prove it, but just as the pain was starting to turn into pleasure, there had been a flash, and a terrible prickling burning in Kyoko's eyes, and warmth, and death so sudden that neither teenager had realized it. It was a vivid dream, and L woke up trembling.

A motherly woman was sitting on the edge of his bed. He took a moment to note that it was, in fact, a bed. The room was well-furnished, well-lit, and very comfortable. He glanced around uncertainly before returning his gaze to the woman. He thought he had seen her before, after the earthquake. She was older than most of the people in Vas, and had a gentle way about her that put the skittish detective immediately at ease despite his natural paranoia. Her polite greeting was both familiar and foreign; how long had it been since "good morning" had been his first thought on waking? Nowadays, it tended to be more along the lines of "where am I, and who died last night."

"Um... good morning... either the liquor store has been refinished rather nicely, or this is an experiment... what's going on, where are the others...?"

Sarah Jane offered the young man a sad smile. "My guess would be experiment," she said. "Although, if it is, it's rather different than I expected." Indeed, she hadn't been a victim of any experiment that she could remember. If she'd been subjected to anything during the time she couldn't account for, well, it was probably better she didn't remember it.

"I've only just woken up myself," she continued, listening to the young man's questions. "Haven't left the room yet. But, there's clean clothing in the closet and the dresser, and there's a proper bathroom just through there," she turned and pointed toward the partially open door behind her. "That's about as far as I've explored." She offered the young man her hand. "Sarah Jane Smith. It's nice to meet you." Well, as nice as it could be, given they were both prisoners, but Sarah Jane always enjoyed meeting new people.

Immediately, L's mind started running through possible explanations for why this experiment was so, well... comfortable.

"We're all in a cage..." he mused, "and I assume we can't leave this cage within a cage... I've heard of this before." his face fell, an expression of intense dismay freezing his features. "In China, it is common to keep two birds in separate cages, side by side. One bird is starved while the other is well fed, within full view of the other, for weeks. Then, people watch... they place bets, as the birds are put in the same cage. The one who watched its counterpart fed will inevitably try to tear it apart. Usually the stronger bird wins the struggle, but it is always bitter, it is always violent, and it is always... unfair." L was up, immediately, searching the corners of the room for the camera.

"It's jumping to conclusions, but wouldn't that be just like them, Ms. Smith? To make the others watch us while we are given everything we could possibly need, and the others in Vas Captio are without...?"

Sarah's face grew darker as she listened to the boy's story. It was a cruel practice, and one she wouldn't put past her captors. But she doubted that if the young man's theory was correct the others would begrudge them what had happened.

"Except, unlike the birds, we're all thinking creatures," she said. Still, she rose and helped him, guessing he was looking for hidden cameras. "We didn't ask to be brought for this experiment, whatever it is, and everyone knows that. I don't think they'd blame us for what happens." She glanced toward the bathroom, with its promise of a shower. "And I doubt they'd think us noble or clever for refusing the amenities given to us." Assuming they worked, of course. It would also not surprise her if the nice-looking shower wouldn't turn on, or if the clothing was too small by a size. Taunting with the chance of getting clean and refreshed.

"And I do think it's jumping to conclusions just a little," she said, although she was opening the closet to see if there were any place to hide a camera. "There could be many reasons we're here, many different things our captors might try to do to us while we're here. It's a theory that makes sense, but we've got no proof of it as yet."

She pulled a clean white shirt out of the closet that looked to be the boy's size. "Best we can do is take advantage of the situation and see if we can figure out how to use it to everyone's advantage in the end." She held the shirt out to him. "So, would you like the first shower?"

The ghost of a smile found its way back to L's face. He was reassured by the older woman's wise words, realizing that his tendency to see the worst before everything else was not a great asset, here. Instead, he should be focusing on the positive. They were in nice facilities... they were thinking creatures, as Sarah Jane said, and everyone would be happy to know that they hadn't been tormented. That they'd been given nice things. He accepted the white shirt, perfectly clean, perfect in every way from size to brand. "Please. You go first, with the shower," he insisted. "I want to see if I can find a camera... and isn't there an old rule that women generally appreciate about 'ladies first?' I've never really gotten to use it before, and I'd like to."

The boy was smiling. That was good. Positive thinking led to better solutions than negative thinking, after all. She smiled as he took the shirt, and the smile widened as he offered to let her use the shower first.

"Thank you," she said. "I won't be long, I promise." Sarah Jane gathered up the clothing she'd chosen before waking the boy and headed into the bathroom. Then, she realized she'd forgotten something important, and popped her head back 'round the door. "I'm sorry, I don't believe I know your name," she said. She couldn't just call him "the boy" or "the young man," after all.

"It's fine. Please take all the time you need," L said, already starting to busily search for cameras. This sort of thing made him feel like he was back home, and oddly, even something as high-stress as feeling watched almost made him relax a bit. His life was such a tangle, lately, with Laura flickering in and out, and Jenny... he still couldn't believe that he'd kissed Jenny yesterday. He thought about her, and wondered if she knew what was happening. He knew that she'd be glad to see him with clean clothes and a shower, but he still felt guilty, to be treated so well when so many others in Vas were still doing without.

"I'm L," he answered, knowing that they'd spoken before over journals. She'd probably read both good and bad things about him, but that was true for everyone here, wasn't it?

"Nice to meet you properly, L," Sarah Jane said, grinning at him. She gave him a wave and ducked back into the bathroom, shutting and locking the door behind her. Not that she thought L would try and open it; she always locked the door at home. She always had done.

Having a proper, hot shower for the first time in days was glorious. Sarah Jane would have loved to spend ages in the shower, but since L was waiting for his turn, she kept her luxuriating to a minimum. She was amazed that their captors had set out not just one, but two sets of product - she recognized the bottles she kept at home, and assumed the others were ones L used. Why were their captors going to such lengths to make them comfortable? It didn't make much sense. Unless, of course, they were only doing it to make everyone drop their guard. Well, that wouldn't work on her. Sarah was nothing if not cautious, especially when she had people other than herself to look after.

About twenty minutes after she'd locked the door, she emerged from the bathroom, fully dressed in her new clothing, scrubbing her damp hair with a towel. "Your turn," she said, scanning the room for L.

While Sarah Jane had been in the shower, L had searched high and low in the bedroom for any sign of a camera. To his mixed disappointment and relief, he couldn't find one... maybe this wasn't such a cruel experiment, after all.

He could smell something cooking, and ventured outside the room. Apparently, whatever quarters they'd been placed in not only had other bedrooms, but a common area and a kitchen. He could hear voices coming from both areas, and realized that he and Sarah Jane weren't alone. Judging by the murmurs of conversation, there were at least eight others in this place.

He was back to take his shower by the time Sarah Jane finished and emerged looking clean, well-dressed, and groomed. He had found a pair of jeans, one of many white shirts, and light grey boxers that looked just like the ones he wore back home. A slight floral scent surrounded Sarah Jane when she came out... how long had it been since he'd smelled shampoo? It was very pleasant. "Ah... right. I've done some poking around, and there are other people here... and someone is cooking." L nodded, ducking his head as he slipped past Sarah Jane and into the warm, steamy bathroom. It wasn't that he wanted to get rid of her... just that he preferred people to be otherwise occupied while he did anything at all in a bathroom.

The mirror was fogged up, but L caught a glimpse of his pale face and nearly jumped out of his skin. He had lost weight. That was surely true for everyone, but it wasn't flattering on L's already-gaunt frame. He reached toward his face, stunned that he could actually see bones. Shedding his well-worn clothes (looser than they'd been when he'd arrived), he stepped into the shower. He could feel the sweat and grime slip away in the hot water, glad that he was finally starting to feel clean. He'd showered, before, of course, at the gym, but somehow, it was always miserable rather than refreshing. Despite the water heater that Kaylee had fixed up, the water was often cold. He enjoyed the heat and vanilla-scented soap for about as long as Sarah had before emerging and heading to the kitchen.
