Who:  Remus Lupin, Rose Tyler & The Ninth Doctor
What:  Morning comes and the trio surfaces..
Where:  In the Museum.
When:  Day 17, 7:45am
Rating:  PG
Status:  Complete

It had been a very confusing day for the young werewolf, who wasn't quite sure exactly what was going on. He'd arrived in this strange.. prison town, and he'd met a very nice young woman-- two of them, in fact.. one of which had originally planned on killing him, but now apparently was going to let him go. Then he'd come back to meet with the first young woman and her.. father? He must have been her father. He seemed protective of her.. and he had slept with them, in the museum, that night. He wasn't exactly accustomed to sleeping on the floor, on sheets, but he had done well enough for himself, considering the amount of pain he was in. But he hadn't shown a bit of discomfort and had been gracious and thankful for what he'd been offered. It was better than sleeping outside. The man-- The Doctor, his name was (but a Doctor of what?)-- had looked at him with some concern but hadn't remarked on his injured status and had only told him that it was best they all sleep and converse in the morning.

Remus had been happy to follow that order, and had ended up sleeping under the same sheet with Rose (though he'd blushed for the first ten minutes) and had fallen asleep quite quickly, and slept quite soundly. it was a testament to how tired he really was. And during the night, he'd cuddled up.

But come morning, the boy had woken up in more pain than he'd fallen asleep in, and when he'd sat up, he'd realized that his shirt was stained with red (he'd moved around too much and had once again pulled at the scabs on his chest), and that he'd stained the sheets, as well. His pants, likewise, had a few stripes of red and his hand had bled through the fresh gauze there. His cheek, however, had only a bit of blood staining the very center of the gauze, and had clearly not been very disturbed. So immediately upon finding out what a mess he'd made, he was climbing carefully to his feet and surveying the damage, before lifting hazel eyes to the Doctor, who was already sitting up and awake, having watched the scene unfold in front of him. Remus felt instantly ashamed, though he didn't know why, exactly, and was looking back down at Rose, who surely would have been awoken by his sudden movements. She, too, would have some of that blood on him, but not too much. There wasn't terribly a lot to begin with, but certainly enough that it had raised a concern with the young man doing the bleeding.

"I'm sorry." He apologized quickly, a hand lifting to pluck his shirt away from his chest, but it stuck, the dried blood having fused it to the injury during the wee hours of morning. Oh, great. That was going to hurt later. "I'm so sorry." He apologized again.

He was so sweet. Poor thing. She really did feel terribly for him. "I'm so sorry," Rose said quietly, looking up at him. He looked tense. Very tense. She turned her eyes over her shoulder to try and catch the Doctor's gaze. Always, always he had some sort of smart remark to make about something.

The mothering nature in her didn't even consider that she was touching a half-naked, very toned man not far from her own age. All she was concerned with was getting him clean and dry and warm again. "Does that...well, of course it hurts, who am I kidding?" Her laugh was small and awkward and she gave him a small, wry smile. "I really am sorry, love."

"No, it's-- it's fine." Remus assured with a short intake of breath and a sudden closing of those hazel eyes. It was something that could be associated with pain, of course.. but the way his muscles were jumping under her fingers, it just wasn't the same as when something hurt. There was no flinching, or wincing, or noises of pain. Of course, it could have just been that he was very good at hiding it, he seemed like he might be.

But the next short breath that escaped him came with a sort of higher noise to it and he shied away slightly from her hands. Something that made the Doctor smile from across the room.

Oh yes, the Doctor was smiling. He'd seen that jumping skin, the shift of those facial muscles, the way he'd drawn in his breath, the young man wasn't in pain, Rose was..

"Tickling him. You're tickling him, Rose." The Doctor spoke up, a sound of amusement taking over his tone, as that smile spread out across his face. "That's very impressive, Remus. Your body is accustomed enough to this type of pain that it actually responds to pleasure over it." Leave it to the Doctor to look at the injured boy like a specimen, instead of a person. "That's fantastic." Well, maybe not for other people.. but it was, for the Time Lord, who was so interested now. And really, it was good for the boy, also.

"Tell us what happened." His tone had turned less playful, less amused with those words. Play time was over. He wanted to know what had gone on.

It took Rose a moment for the Doctor's words to make any sense to her. But when they did, she couldn't help giggling. "Oh... Oh, man, I'm so sorry!" But her words were smothered in her laughter.

However, the next words the Doctor spoke troubled her. She set down her makeshift cloth and watched the boy's eyes. Remus did seem far too accustomed to the pain he should have been in. Most humans would've been still on the ground, curled up against such injuries. How did a young man who was barely even into manhood survive with this? And apparently over and over as the whites of previous scars showed.

"You can tell us," she said reassuringly. "Honestly. There's little the Doctor hasn't heard before, and maybe we can help." To emphasize her point, she rested her hand on a non beaten and battered spot on his shoulder and gave a gentle squeeze. She had claimed him as her responsibility, after all. She should take care of him.

When the Doctor declared that he was being tickled, and Rose lowered the cloth down, Remus lifted a hand to touch at the area before smiling just a touch at her laughter. "Don't be, it's fine." It had been a long time since he'd been tickled while injured. Sure, it happened all the time when he wasn't, but everyone always treated him like glass otherwise. But he wasn't. He was a werewolf, he was practically indestructible, though he often looked like a strong wind could blow him over.

Though, he was looking up when the statement was made that he was accustomed to this pain, and his hand fell away from his side. Rose was encouraging him to talk and he drew in a slow breath before looking down at the floor, and then up again, to the pair of them.

"It's nothing. Really. There's nothing you can do about it, it just happens, but it doesn't happen all the time. It's just once a month." This happened to him once a month. Oh, yes. And that was why he was so accustomed to it, that was why he didn't flinch back or complain. It was old news to him and he had a very high tolerance for pain.

"You look like you've been cut up by some wild animal. A bear, or.. something." The Doctor observed with a downturn of his lips, stepping closer to get a better look at the wounds on the boy's chest. They almost looked like a wolf.. But they were too wide for that. Maybe a tiger? No, they weren't deep enough for a tiger. The Doctor was stumped, and he leaned away slowly, even as the boy announced that it happened once a month.

"You go through this once a month?" Someone threw the boy into a cage with some strange wild animal once a month? That was.. wait. Once a month? He shook his head some. Something was connecting, but it just wasn't quite there. What happened once a month, Time Lord? Rent, rent happened once a month.. holidays-- there was always a holiday every month. But he doubted the boy's torture happened on a count of holidays. What else? Think. Think. What happened once a month? Maintenance on Big Ben happened once a month. What else.. what-- OH! He had it!

PMS! That happened once a month, and women did get particularly nasty around that time...

It was a very, very good thing that Rose Tyler didn't have the power of mind-reading. If she did and she happened to pick up on the Doctor's thoughts, he might find himself dead. Or doing whatever it was when Time Lords died. Because he didn't exactly have to deal with PMS now, did he? He had no idea the happy face she typically put on for him once a month when she was nauseous and tired and just wanted to curl up in bed. Only once had it affected him, and there was no way she was dragging herself about some planet with people with antlers just to satisfy his curiousity when she felt like she could keel over dead at any moment.

Rose couldn't read minds, however, and instead knelt quietly in front of the young man she'd come to befriend so quickly. Her own mind was racing, much like the Doctor's. Not a gang, like she'd originally thought. The marks were far too wide. And she doubted he was being abused, as he'd seemed far too trusting. He was considerably obedient, though. Maybe it'd been beaten into him?

Though she thought she was taking a far more illogical path than the Doctor, Rose was much closer to the truth. Knowing she was about to sound stupid, she got to her feet. Under the guise of getting more water, she whispered into the Doctor's ear, out of range of the boy's hearing so he couldn't hear how completely idiotic she was about to sound. "There's not such a thing as...well, you know. Werewolves. Are there?" After all, there hadn't been real ghosts, just alien spirits. Most of the things they'd encountered could be explained by some form of alien activity. But Remus wasn't very likely to have been attacked by aliens, either. Even dog-shaped aliens. Right?

Though Rose had whispered it, the Doctor was lifting his eyebrows and leaning his head away. Sometimes, with Nine, it took a suggestion from someone else to get it through his head. She'd found that out early on. "Werewolves?" He spoke louder, in a normal voice. "Of course there are. Lots of different variations. There are the Jax on Saturnia Regina, which were thought to be extinct, but now we know they're alive and well. Then there's an alien life-form that implants into young children, boys mostly. Lupine wavelength haemovariform. There are mutations that give people more wolf-like appearances. There are Wereloks, but they're not really werewolves, they're more like.. wolves with snake fangs." He made a motion with his hand then, as if to indicate fangs. "And most of them have some sort of affinity with the intensity of light, most often the intensity of moonlight." He turned his head to look over at the silent boy, taking in the lack of blood in his cheeks, and the way he was staring at them.

"And then there's your run of the mill werewolves, just like the ones in your storybooks. Born of Earth and trapped here the same as you lot. They transform at the full moon and they attack humans. But normally they bite." He had clearly caught on, but he was following a completely separate train of thought. "Were you attacked by a werewolf, Remus? Were you bitten? It seems unlikely that you'd be attacked every month without ever being bitten." That made the Doctor take a step closer, two and two were coming together in his mind, thanks to the pale, worried expression the young man was wearing.

Remus had indeed become more pale as the Doctor spoke, as he could see those wheels turning in his head. And he took a slow step back as the older man came forward, unsure he wanted him that close, with that curious look in his eye. "It was a werewolf." He admitted quickly. "But I'm fine now. I just..." Hazel eyes went back and forth between Rose, and her companion and he was silent for a few seconds before speaking up again.

"I just need to be locked up, once a month. I've just gone through a transformation, we still have twenty-five days before anyone needs to be concerned with me." Assuming they were on Earth, of course.. Which Remus was sure they were. Where else could they be? There were trees, after all. But he felt a little ill, there was a twisting in his stomach. He'd never told anyone before.. his friends had figured it out. And really, Rose and the Doctor had figured it out as well, he'd just confirmed it for them, and looked rather unsure about it now that the information was out there in the open.

"Oooh," Rose breathed, the surprise and worry seeping through her voice both at once. She didn't mean to, exactly. But how else could she react? She'd never met a werewolf before. Hadn't even thought they were real. And now she was standing in front of one. But he wasn't the thing of nightmares. He was just a boy! All big eyes and long limbs and... He was such a sweetheart.

With little regard to the potential barriers between them, Rose stepped forward and gave the boy a hug. Not a romantic hug, not a friendly one, but a comforting one. She didn't speak a word at first but simply held him. He didn't deserve this. Apparently, the injuries were self-inflicted. But not by himself. Not exactly. By...that once-a-month creature.

Made her PMS look like child's play. And not the movie with Chuckie.

"We'll think of something," she finally said firmly. "There's tons of places here, we can find somewhere safe for you. Don't even worry about that." Rose shot a glance back to the Doctor and pulled back from the hug, but only to touch the boy's bruised cheek gently. "What we need to worry about now is getting you back to health." For one month. And then they'd repeat all over again. There had to be a way to stop the boy from being able to hurt himself.

Remus allowed her to hug him, lifting his hands slightly to touch at her biceps as she did.. but his cheeks had darkened some, because he was shirtless and she was beautiful and hugging him and.. well. He turned his face aside once she released him and reached out for his button-up shirt, which was a bit wet and bloody, but it didn't matter. He'd be getting clean clothes shortly. The Thrift store wasn't far from here, and he planned to go there once these two were done looking him over.

"Thank you." It was more quietly said this time, because he didn't know what else to say to that, he was always at a loss, when people were actually nice to him, understanding about his condition when they found out. Most people just gasped and were happy to get away from him.

"We will think of something." The Doctor agreed with Rose's statement, and smiled again at the boy. "Actually, I'm quite pleased to find out you're a werewolf." And at the boy's confused expression, the short-haired Doctor continued.

"As a werewolf, you'll react to the full moon, even if it's not Earth's moon, and we're clearly not on Earth," You'd heard right, Remus. You weren't on Earth anymore. "So with you, we'll be able to find out how many moons this planet has, if it has any at all. It could have one, two, five, fifteen-- we don't know. But you'll help us figure it out." The smile on his face was positively excited, and it made the boy clearly uncomfortable. "So while you might transform several times within one month's time, you also might not transform at all. But if you do, or don't, it'll help us to figure out exactly where we are, based on the intensities and the frequencies of your transformations."

Yeah, that's right. Guinea pig. Guinea wolf?

Instinctively, Rose took Remus' hand in hers, glaring slightly in the Doctor's direction. "He's not a science project," she defended, already picturing the Doctor making up some lab and storing the young man in it, studying him and poking at him. And finishing it up with a tri-fold display board with scalloped edge construction paper and stick-on block letters.

The logical part of her, the part that had spent the better part of the last year traveling with the man with the goofy smile, knew he'd never actually hurt Remus. But he was obviously so upset about his condition, and it hurt him, too. And she didn't want him hurting. The very idea that the boy could possibly face this again several times in one month terrified her.

"Besides, we have no idea where we are. We could be on Earth for all you know." Unlikely, maybe. But most everyone she'd met was from Earth. Why couldn't it happen?

The eldest made a face when Rose looked at him like that, but the smile returned and he lifted his eyebrows up at Rose. Had she really just said that? For all he knew? He knew an awful lot, it was dangerous to say things like that to him.

"We can't be on Earth, there are trees growing here that are incapable of growing in Earth's soil. Though I suppose they could have trucked soil in from other planets, but that seems like a very big project. Why not just move us to another planet? And I think even you daft bunch of apes would have noticed an intergalactic dirt-mover in your sky, dumping millions of cubic meters of soil into a secluded part of the world." There he went, insulting the humans again. But the smile hadn't left his face, he hadn't said it to be mean, only to get his point across, and he was turning blue eyes from her, onto the boy who now had his hand twined with hers. He lowered his gaze there and it lingered a moment before he looked up again. "We'll figure something out."

Rose was briefly self-conscious of the Doctor's gaze on her fingers laced through Remus'. But she knew it meant nothing more than a protective and comforting gesture and she looked back at him defiantly.

"Don't feel too badly," she told Remus, a hint of sarcasm in her voice, "when he's stressed he likes to insult species. Makes him feel tougher somehow." She'd once told Jack something very similar. And meant it. God, that man could drive her insane. "One day he's going to learn," she continued, turning dark hazel eyes on the Doctor, "that we're not quite as stupid as he seems to think."

She released Remus' hand, but stayed close to him, her stance protective. "Besides, that's not even the point. The first thing we need to worry about is how to keep Remus and everyone around him safe once...a month or so." She refused to say 'or more'. Refused. No horrible trick of nature would make this boy suffer more than that.

The youngest smiled some when Rose told him that. He liked to insult species? Why would he insult his own species? And how did he know so much about other planets? He turned hazel eyes onto the Doctor and opened his mouth to ask, but the expression on the Doctor's face caused him to close his mouth again, not wanting to anger the man who looked like he'd be a force to be reckoned with (it was the leather jacket, very menacing).

"I only need to be locked up somewhere, if there's a place that's secure." He offered up quietly, hand flexing some, mourning the loss of that warm hand of hers.

The look on the Doctor's face was one to be concerned about. He wasn't smiling anymore, but rather he was intensely focused on the two of them, though he seemed to relax once the hold was released, and he crossed his arms over his chest for a moment, before they dropped. That had never been his favorite position. "I insult species because you're thick. But he is right, all we have to do is find a cage, or a room, and lock him in there for the duration of the full moon, and we should all be safe enough, so long as he doesn't break out."

If he managed to break out, they would all be in very serious trouble, and Rose certainly wouldn't like the outcome. There was nothing to expel from this boy. If he became dangerous and started chasing after people, intent on killing, there'd be no choice but to.. well. Stop him from doing that, any way that they had to.

Rose wasn't half as thick as the Doctor seemed to think she was. She knew what a loose werewolf might mean. She didn't want to get killed any more than anyone else. But that was highly besides the point!

"Which is all fine and wonderful but he's also human, dammit. A real live boy, Pinocchio after the movie, all that. When the moon's not out and big and smiley? You treat him like it." Sometimes she thought all the Doctor saw was science and its benefits and the possibilities of what was and what could be. What he often missed was the person and what his actions might mean.

When she'd noticed the look on Remus' face, however, she turned to him with a small sigh. "You may as well know if you're sleeping here. The Doctor's an alien. A space traveler, and time, too. Complete with spaceship, all that." Talking to him about all of that made it a bit easier to turn back to the Doctor without the threatening glare that would make one Jackie Tyler proud.

"An alien?" He questioned softly, looking back towards the Doctor. But he seemed so.. normal. He didn't look like an alien. But he wasn't going to question her, she obviously knew better than he did, and the look on the older man's face said it all. He wasn't very pleased, which made it obvious that she had been telling the truth, because why else would he be upset?

"Are you an alien, too?" The werewolf prompted the pretty blonde woman standing beside (and slightly in front of) him so protectively. He actually felt safer with her there, and he wasn't sure why.

Rose Tyler! The look on his face said it for him, he didn't have to shout out her name like that. She'd just.. ran off at the mouth and told this boy that, like it wasn't anything, like it was just another thing for him to know. Sure, he'd been easy enough with telling her.. and.. Jack. And Adam. And, really.. most everyone they met.

Hm.

Still, it was his secret to tell, not hers! Alright, so many he was a little jealous of the young man that was getting all of Rose's attention now. But at least it wasn't Jack, or someone that she could conceivably get a crush on again. That wasn't something he was looking forward to. Rose Tyler and the men (and women) she took pity on. The Doctor had very little room for pity, unless it tied in with his guilt over the Time War. He was hard. Harder than any of his other incarnations, harder than any incarnations that would follow. It was the softer side that Rose would eventually fall for, and she'd fall hard and fast.

Then again, so would he. But that was a long time from now, and neither knew a thing about it. It was best that way.

Immediately, Rose knew she'd spoken too quickly, too easily. And yet, why should the young werewolf be the only one on display. She straightened her shoulders and ignored Remus for the moment, turning to meet the Doctor right in his bright blue eyes. He could say all he wanted about being hard. She knew the softer side of him. The one that had all but danced in glee when he'd been able to save people. The one who'd let her curl up at his side on more than one tragic occasion. The one who'd held her hand through good and bad.

He could think what he wanted. But she was already starting to fall for the big idiot, whether either of them knew it or not.

"You are. And it's not a secret. Lord knows you tell enough people. It's who you are. Just like Remus is a werewolf and I," she continued, glancing back at Remus, "am just a stupid ape." After all, how many times had he told her as much? "Just some stupid idiot who has no idea how the world works, clearly. I should just be willing to sacrifice people for the sake of study and trade one person for fifty and...and..."

Oh, she was fuming by then. And not just at the Doctor. Her anger was much more directed at years of feeling small and insignificant in the lives of just about everyone ever. And finding out that the universe was even greater than all of that and she was even more insignificant, even more stupid.

Turning away from the Time Lord, she reached out, straightening Remus' shirt carefully. "Look at you, you're a right mess. Ought to get back to the Thrift Store, see if you can't find anymore poleyester."
