Entry tags:!complete, day 16, location: carnival, rose tyler, the doctor (ten)

Who: John 'The Tenth Doctor' Smith and Rose 'Not As Oblivious As I Look' Tyler
What: Probably? Keeping Rose out of trouble...
Where: The Carnival
When: Day 16, afternoonish
Rating: PG
Status: Complete!

It was rather irritating being told what to do. But honestly? Rose was used to it. The Doctor had a knack for telling her where to be and when to be there, and she was pretty good at following directions. Mostly because, with him, if she didn't it was life or death. So when Dr. John Smith told her to get to the gas station to seek out food, she listened. Also sort of life and death. Starving and all.

But Rose was also known for her exploratory nature getting the better of her. She was good at it, frankly. It usually got her into trouble before it got her out of it, but she often got answers because of it, too. And it was only her first real day in this strange new city. The day before had been spent with Dr. Smartass and then finding Remy and the Doctor and being introduced around. She never had claimed her grand tour with Remy, but she was honestly just as happy to do it herself.

And honestly, who wasn't attracted to a giant ferris wheel in the middle of nowhere?

Though the map said to go to the left, Rose followed the trail to the right, arriving in front of what was apparently a long abandoned carnival. But even if nothing worked, what girl wasn't drawn to the carousel and the ferris wheel and...oh god, was that a tunnel of love? Rose couldn't help giggling. Even if there was something seriously messed up about this place, it pulled her in just the same.

Gas station? What gas station?

Oh, Doctor. Even this Rose would tell this man, this Dr. John Smith, anything he wanted to know. Maybe it was pathetic, but she couldn't stop herself from talking around him. That was typically a fault of hers, and he was no exception. Good-looking, talkative blokes made her talk right back.

And this one? Fit both. Quite well.

"I do, actually," she replied smugly. "Well, I used to. Sort of. In school choir. Till I staged a protest and got them all to walk out one day. Wasn't welcomed back after that." Her smile was mischievous at the memory, but she flushed prettily at his gentle nudge. "Since then it's pretty much just singing along in my...friend's car. And the occasional karaoke night." Friend. Ha. She was doing it again. Having trouble calling Mickey 'boyfriend' in the presence of others. She really ought to come to a decision about that sooner or later, shouldn't she?

Her smile turned into a smirk as she looked sideways at him, her hair falling over her shoulder as she studied him. "Dodging trouble only works if you succeed in the dodging," she reminded him. "Robin brought it on himself half the time. No wonder the poor girl had to move in and save the day half the time."

She would, wouldn't she? Tell anything. He liked to just listen to her talk. Lost time and all that. He'd keep quiet and listen because who knew if he'd ever get this opportunity again. Gave you a whole new perspective when you had something you'd lost handed right back to you. Even if it wasn't quite as you remembered, it still had that feeling to it, that familiarity.

"You rebel you," he teased watching her when he'd finished fixing those laces, even the one she'd mussed up. "Well, cars are a nice place for singing. Like the shower, perfect acoustics for it."

"Oh, who doesn't enjoy the dodging?" He prompted. "Haven't failed in dodging yet," he waggled his brow, propping his elbows on his knees and folding his hands, looking at the Ferris wheel not too far off from them now. "You don't seem to like Robin much."

If the Doctor had paid much attention, he'd know exactly what Rose was about to say because he'd have heard. In fact, she'd kill right then for that hot, steaming shower and some of her favourite jasmine soap. Only a couple of days and she was already feeling grimy. What would a week of this place do to her?

"So happens, I sing there, too," she mentioned casually, though her smile was unashamedly flirtatious this time. Oh, she shamed even herself sometimes. Maybe the Doctor was right and she really should stop picking up blokes everywhere she went. But this one was hardly her fault, he'd just started talking and could she make him go away? Of course not! It'd be rude.

And, admittedly, she'd be much more bored.

Rose leaned back on her elbows so she was practically stretched out along several steps. It felt pretty good on a back not used to sleeping on the ground, and she liked the view. Wait, that sounded pervy. Well...maybe just a bit. But the museum looked more interesting from that angle as well. "I don't have a problem with Robin, really. Steal from the rich, give to the poor, what's not to like? Except...well, I always sort of wondered, what happens if those poor get caught with the things he stole and gave to them? Wouldn't they go to jail or lose a hand or what have you? Isn't that his fault, indirectly?"

Of course the Doctor knew she sang in the shower. It was hard to avoid, really unless he'd wanted to go down into the cloisters. Though, it was hard to tell if she was really any good or if it was the wonderful sound modulation system he'd installed three regenerations prior that aided her voice. He smiled at the thought. "I think everybody sings in the shower. People who don't? Something not quite right there."

She leaned back and the Doctor looked over his shoulder at her, watching as she stretched out languidly. Leave it to Rose to get comfortable on some concrete steps. "You think they'd get caught? I always thought Robin would be smart enough to give them some food, or something they could use. Nothing to get them into trouble like the gold coins the films like to show him handing out. Though, I suppose I could be giving him too much credit..." John Smith shrugged, pushing up from his spot. He should go, he knew it.

"I'm going to head back to the carnival," he smoothed out his trousers and shrugged a little. "More wires to collect for the modulator, afterall."

He was wonderfully logical. She liked that. Again, ways he reminded her of the man she loved and therefore, she was bound to like him, too. "And just how would they pay their taxes with food, hmm?"

But then he was standing. And though she tried to hide it, Rose had to admit she was slightly disappointed. Which was wrong, he had things to do. Things to do that, with any luck at all, would get them out of there. He didn't need to be hanging around a clingy kid, which was really all she probably was to him. Hell, most of the time she was sure that's all she was to the Doctor, too.

So she smiled up at him but didn't move to get up. She'd probably try and hug him goodbye or something ridiculous like that, and really? Not attractive. "Be careful," she admonished him before he could do the same. "And...y'know. Thanks. For the guide, I mean." And the hour or so of conversation. And not forcing her back into that museum a moment earlier than he had to. But she chose not to say all that. Again, clingy kid.

"It'd be a bit suspicious paying your taxes the day after you said you couldn't, wouldn't it? You'd be surprised how far a loaf of bread could get you then." Bribery. You could bribe the tax collector with your bread, your jelly, your ham. He'd go away fat and happy and you'd be safe for another month. Here's hoping that Robin was just as clever as our dear Doctor.

The Doctor's smile quirked a little watching her as she stayed there a moment. It was a godsend she didn't get up because that hug of his? Known across galaxies, for the best she didn't experience that.

"Always am," he smiled with a nod. "Oh, no need to thank me. Remember, just your run of the mill Merlin saving damsels and blokes and kittens in trees." Slowly he'd turn on his heel and take off in the direction of the Carnival with slow steps. He'd look back a couple of times with a smile and a look that said 'Just checking.'
