Who: Remy LeBeau & The Tenth Doctor
What: Hunting for food.. jackpot.
Where: The Gas Station.
When: Day 16, 1:30pm
Rating: PG-13
Status: Complete

After walking Tonks back to the Library at a very ungodly hour, Remy LeBeau had bid her good night and had walked back alone, to his barn, in the darkness, then he'd settled down in his bed and had let out a slow breath. What a night. He hoped the Doctor would come back tonight, but somehow knew he wouldn't, and had rolled over with that thought and had gone to sleep. It'd been cold, without a second person. But come morning, it had been much warmer, and he could feel a warm body next to him and it made him smile just a little. The Doctor had come back, after all. He idly smoothed a hand up over his shoulder, down his arm.. and his very muscular bicep.

Red eyes opened immediately to stare at the face across from him, but there was no face. There was no head. Nothing. And the Cajun had shouted loudly and scrambled as fast as he could back off of that large couch, falling with a thud onto the floor boards as he pushed away, staring wide-eyed and panting, gaze locked onto the headless body. He knew immediately who it was, though it took him a few moments to actually stand and go closer. After reaching out to lay his hand on that arm again, his brain registered that it was cold. He'd been dead some time, the color of his skin made that obvious. The only reason he'd been warm was because he'd been pressed up against the Cajun. The thought made his stomach turn and he had to close his eyes to hold back the wave of nausea.

It had taken him two hours to dig a hole behind the barn, having bent one of those metal chairs into a spoon type shape and used it to move the Earth, then it had taken him half an hour to wrap Logan up in the top few sheets of the bed and carry his body out behind the barn. It had taken him another hour to fill in the hole and pat it down good and hard. He didn't want something digging up the body of his former rival.

Looks like he'd won that rivalry, huh, Logan? The thought made him smirk, and he stabbed the chair into the ground as a marker, then had walked away. Only then had he really taken stock of the car in front of the barn and wrote a short journal entry about it. If someone didn't claim it soon, it was going to be his. He'd break a window if he had to, but it really was too pretty to do that. So he'd wait, for now. And after a trip to the gym, a cold shower (along with fresh clothes) and a shave, he had returned to the barn, grabbed a pillow case, and headed first to the gas station. He needed another small supply of food. His twinkies were all gone.

And when he arrived, he was treated to quite the nice surprise, and had thrown four of those MREs into his sack and some of the junk food, some gum, a few other little things.. then he was tearing open the case of water and tossing a few bottles into the sack as well. He wouldn't take the whole thing. Because he was nice. Because he didn't want the others to suffer without water. Because he knew the women would need it to keep their figures slim. Because he wanted to share. .. Okay, those were all lies. He just didn't want to carry it.

The heat wave was nice though, the Doctor's coat had been left behind in the barn and he was in just a white undershirt and a pair of torn jeans-- and, of course, his boots. He never left home without his boots, or those dark gloves on his hands.

Gambit jerked when he heard the other man's voice, clearly a little jumpy, and wider red eyes had lifted and focused onto the Doctor.. then he looked back down at the sack he had and shook his head some. "Some 'dis f' you, homme." For when he came back. A hand lifted to push dark and pale fingers back through his hair, getting it out of his face, before he scooped another few things into his sack and turned to face the Doctor once again, breathing in deeply through his nose and staring at him a long moment.

He wanted to tell him about finding Logan's headless body in the bed this morning. He wanted to tell him about Tonks coming by last night. Wanted to mention that he'd returned Jack's coat. And it showed on his face that there was something.. but then he smiled and shrugged up a shoulder. "Y' look like you ain' slep' much." And don't mind that pale purple bruise along his jaw, Doctor. It'd get worse before it got better.

The Doctor stood there, that long blue sign under his arm and watched. He saw the jump from the Cajun - something he hadn't seen before, and he noticed those slow movements, too. He said some of the food was for him. It was thoughtful; though, the Doctor still looked away. He was dressed in full Ten attire; the coat came off for nothing since the quake.

There was something on the tip of the Cajun's tongue, and the Doctor found himself caught off guard by a censored mutant. He wasn't used to Remy being able to contain anything that happened to be on his mind. There was no mind mouth filter to be had. So, when all Gambit mentioned he didn't sleep much, the Time Lord kept his expression rather neutral. "I slept just fine," he'd retort. Sure, he didn't sleep like he was on frankencouch; but, he still slept well enough. Better than no sleep, anyway.

The Doctor took in that Cajun, bruise and all and felt a tinge of guilt, a feeling that he'd been steeped in all morning. "You alright?" That was a sterile enough question, yes?

Remy stared at the shorter man a long moment, until the Doctor looked away, and then he was looking down at his sack and bending at the waist to tie it up, then haul it up. It didn't weigh much, maybe ten pounds, but the muscle in his arm strained a little to get it up onto his shoulder before relaxing again.

"Yeah? My mis'ake." The red-head returned just as easily, flashing him a more charming smile this time, and he swayed his body a little to the side, clearly getting right back into the groove he liked to keep himself settled in. "Was gon' brin' you uh blanke' an' uh pillow, but guess I didn' need to, non?" And it was a good thing he hadn't, or they probably would have ended up fighting again. And Remy didn't want that, though the Doctor seemed like he was itching for another one-- it was the tone of his voice, the way he was standing, as if braced for impact.

He must have been so confused when it didn't come.

However, when the Time Lord prompted Remy about being alright, the Cajun swayed his body to the other side again, like a cat curling its way around a room, and he was silent for a few seconds, weighing his options, before he smiled and lifted up a shoulder some, but didn't answer verbally. He didn't want to lie. Not right now.

"How you doin'?" The question was turned back around onto him and that red gaze lowered down to that sign. He looked curious for a few seconds but it didn't quite reach his eyes. "Wha's 'dat?"

The Doctor had plenty of time to build up his immunity to the Cajun's charming smile. It might work on the ladies..., the Time Lord thought. "Right," he'd responded to the mutant's admission of a mistake and then Gambit just kept on talking. "No, suppose not." It had actually managed to get warmer as the night went on, who knew? Oh, and the fact he could ball his coat up into a pillow? Definite plus. He was resourceful, too, Cajun.

Was he itching for a fight? He was itching for the whole damned thing to be over and done with. He wanted this particular chapter to end so he could get back to the important things like getting everyone back into their proper space and time. That was important. Arguing with someone from a parallel universe about the status of his affections, not very high on his to-do list.

The Cajun tried to dodge his question. "You're not the only one who gets to interrogate," the Doctor replied. "How are you," he asked again. It bothered him that the Cajun hadn't replied. It only indicated that he was not, in fact, alright.

Gambit was definitely not alright. But when the Doctor insisted that the red-head wasn't the only one who got to interrogate, he laughed some and shrugged up his shoulders, the bag there shifting some, the contents spilling more to one side. Then he was coming a few slow, graceful steps closer, very deliberately placing how far apart his steps were, so he'd come to a stop about two feet from the much older Doctor and he leaned in with a slow smile, bringing their faces about a foot apart.

"M' lonely." He admitted with that cool, easy smile. But, of course, if that had been the only thing, he would have just said it outright. "Wha's 'de sign, mon ami?" But then it dawned on him and the smile faded a little. "Was 'dat wit' you when you woke up?" Ah, Remy had gotten a present this morning, too. Everyone had.

His hadn't been a sign.

He was serious, Gambit. Very serious. Should have been stamped on his forehead. 'I am v. serious.' So, while you laughed and shifted and came closer, a grin on your face with animated motions; the Doctor just stood there, blank-faced and immobile. He wanted you to show him you weren't the child he thought you were, and currently you were failing miserably.

They'd talked enough about loneliness. The Doctor was well versed, and apparently so was Remy. That wouldn't be a reason to dodge a question. "Bunk." Still as a statue Time Lord blinked. "What happened?" He wasn't going to answer your questions until you answered his. Tit for Tat and all that. Let's play.

The grin on his face slowly faded away until it wasn't there any longer, and Remy stared across at the Doctor a long moment, after he prompted him for what happened again. He stared another heartbeat, then the smile came back, but it was only half there, before it faded again, a bit more quickly this time. But it was back, not as bright as it had been seconds earlier, before it was finally wiped away completely.

The Cajun kept red eyes locked onto brown during this, but after his smile had finally lost its hold, he lowered his gaze, locking it onto the Doctor's throat for a few seconds. Red shifted to look at the wall of the gas station, then at the bag on his shoulder, and to the Time Lord's chest.. then slowly back up to his throat again. And it was then, in that instant, that his expression shifted again, his brow furrowed and his mouth thinned out, pressing into a frown, a look that just became more pronounced, before he narrowed his eyes and lowered his head some to glare angrily at those red chucks, to keep himself from getting emotional -- from crying, or something equally as stupid. And it was stupid. Very, very stupid. Keep it together, Gambit, you pussy.

Seconds later, he looked back up, that expression gone and replaced with one that looked very similar to the Doctor's. Blank.

"You hungry?" Came his question, at last.

Still no answer. Well, unless you counted a faltering smile and a waltzing glance a response. Up and down more times than a yo-yo that Cajun's smile came and went and the Doctor wasn't sure at some points if it was coming or going, well that is until it was actually gone. Then trickled away the red eyes, left, right, down. Right, left, down. Then the Cajun frowned. Then he forwned more deeply. And then he became blank. He'd adopted that totally hard poker face. The Doctor knew why he was wearing his mask, what was Gambit's excuse?

The Doctor thought about it carefully, putting the sign down and closing the gap between he and the mutant. "Stop for a moment and answer the question," he asked, the sharpness in his voice gone as his hand came up to the Cajun's bicep. He wasn't batting you around now, Cajun, he was genuinely worried. You could see that, couldn't you?

When he came forward, Remy's eyes came right back up to meet with brown. Another few seconds of silence past before he shook his head, just a little, his muscle clenching under the Doctor's touch before it relaxed completely and his arm settled limply at his side. He'd wanted that touch.

Needed it.

But then he was shrugging his shoulder and moving his arm back to dislodge it.

"Logan's dea'." Came the simple, calm answer. Like he was talking about the weather. The Doctor probably didn't even know he had it in him, this more brooding side. It didn't look right on him. A smile looked much better.

He felt the muscle beneath his hand twitch and stir and eventually settle. He held there because the Doctor needed to make sure Remy knew he was still there; even if his words and very demeanor perhaps indicated to the contrary. He was here, Remy LeBeau, your friend the Doctor. He was here and he was listening. Even as you shrugged out of his grasp.

The Doctor's hand returned to his pocket, back into that defensive posture. The Doctor blinked. Once. Twice. Three times. He was thinking about those two simple words. "I'm sorry." The Doctor didn't want to ask how, so he didn't. "I so very sorry." He wanted to reach out again, offer a hug. That's what he did in times like this, he hugged. Best gesture in the universe, a hug.

The Doctor stayed put.

"Non. You didn' even like him. No one here di'." Remy shifted a step, lowering his eyes back down to the ground as he got a hold of himself again. He'd let that pregnant pause remain there, separating them, before he breathed in through his nose and nodded just once.

"T'ough' he was you. Roll over on 'de couch an.." But he didn't finish his sentence, only fell silent for the hundredth time that conversation and stared forward blankly. It was only after another few heartbeats that red lifted again.

He opened his mouth.. then closed it and lowered the bag he had sitting on his shoulder, letting it drop to the ground. "We wasn' close. New each ot'er few mon'ts." But they'd had an understanding, and he'd been the closest thing to a friend (which, really, was pathetic) before he'd come to this place.

He was right, he didn't like him. If other people didn't like Wolverine; well, that was for the rest of the captives to decide among themselves. He wasn't sorry for the loss of the reckless mutant. No, he was sorry that he could see Remy LeBeau in such a great deal of pain. That's not to say that Logan's life was unimportant, all life is; it was just much more pressing to the Time Lord that it had affected his friend this way.

They'd what?! The Doctor's face contorted to a look of horror. Remy didn't need to say that he'd found the body in the bed with him. The Doctor could infer. As those eyes dipped and rose again the Doctor held them, his own browns surprisingly soft as he tried to keep a gentle hold to that connection.

Again his hand came out of his pocket, and again he set it on the Cajun's arm, holding there. "I'm still sorry." He was.

When the Doctor brought that hand out again and touched his arm, the younger man shifted his body and stood stationary for about ten seconds, before he stepped in closer, not once, but twice, pressing his body up against the Doctor's and turning his face, dipping his head down and pressing his forehead against the Time Lord's shoulder. Both hands slowly lifted and curled into the coat at the thinner man's sides, holding on tightly.

"T'ough' it was you." He said again, but this time, it was in a bit of a different tone. For all of a second, his brain had registered that the headless body was the Doctor, before his sense had kicked in and he'd realized it wasn't. It had taken him another ten seconds to identify it. But for that short time? Those few seconds? He'd thought it was his Doctor.

"Je suis si stupide." Came his next short statement, but it was really impossible to tell why he was saying that. It could have been a lot of reasons.
