Day 2: Mid-Day

Who: The Doctor and OPEN TO ALL
What: A meeting at the Carnival
Where: The Ferris Wheel
When: Let's say Mid-Day, shall we?
Rating: Possibly as high as PG-13 I'd guess, for language
OOC: To keep this organized if you want to start your own 'sub group' at the meeting, please start a thread beneath the main one.  Characters are open to jump into any sub-thread as this is a public place; however, please be polite and do not be in multiple active sub-threads at once! If you want to leave your subthread for another please post your character exiting the one thread so people don't wait for you to post in it.)

The Doctor had slept uneasily. It had been a long, long time since the Tme Lord had been unable to get a restful night's sleep. He think of a handful of times that he'd been unable to get comfortable or shut his mind off or just relax - but it was never quite as pronounced as this. The Doctor, waking from his slumber in the back of a bumper car. The night hadn't been too cold, and there was just something strangely amusing about falling asleep in the confines of a useless vehicle.

What wasn't so amusing was the way the Doctor had been awaken with a jolt as the car started moving. "What?!" Came a near yelp as the Doctor struggled to sit up in the car. Looking left and right the gallifreyan threw himself out of the car and onto the slippery mat. "What?!" He said again, ducking out of the path of an oncoming vehicle. This was beyond strange. There hadn't been any electricity before now. The Doctor wondered if the sudden source could be used to charge generators and batteries. Heading out with a dash he looked around - the carnival seemed suddenly quiet once more.

He found himself at the foot of the Ferris Wheel, which was stagnant and looming. He didn't like the feel of it suddenly. He hadn't been terribly at unease for a while; but, now he was feeling like a rat in a maze. Why would things come alive so suddenly? Taking out his journal the Doctor penned a note, making sure to remind everyone of the meeting they had planned. He'd need them all if they were to harvest any of the batteries from the bumper cars before they became useless. Taking up a seat on a bench the Doctor thought - where in the world could we get a screwdriver?

Setting his elbows to his knees the Doctor leaned forward and tried to relax. People would come, and when they did he'd be able to better think of ways to escape.

River had slept in the theater where Cheyrl had offered her to go to. She took up two seats in the audience, her legs hanging over the elbow rest between them. It had taken her an awfully long time to fall asleep the night before. With the combination of her shoulder still throbbing, though she was lucky to finally get some stiches, and the fact that she was nervous to have something like that happen again to her.

After some hours River awoke again, her biological clock was starting to get rather messed up. Though she could not force herself to go asleep again. She began drawing in her journal again, needing something to do to occupy her time as she waited for Cheryl to wake up. She noticed an entry by the Doctor. Reading it and finding the idea of a meeting interesting she swung her legs over the elbow rest and quietly walked out the door of the theater.

It took her a bit to find the carnival area. The only places she had been before were the drug store, library, and woods. Though she was able to find it by reading and finding the Doctor. "Hello." she said to the Doctor, still holding Inara's old robe in her hands as she stared up at the ferris wheel. "They made it move." she stated calmly at the wheel.

The Doctor had been off in his own little world; face to the ground and forehead being rubbed absent mindedly by his fingertips. The Doctor was currently trying to determine how best to generate a wave of sonic energy without the risk of blowing out people's ear drums. It had to be possible. It just had to be. There had to be little bitty transmissions in the cars and those transmissions held little sparks of energy for a short while. The short while was starting to expire, actually.

"Hello," he heard from a feminine voice, causing his head to perk up.

"Well, hello," The Doctor replied, standing from the bench and walking up beside her. "Did they? I must have been really out of it... They'd switched on the bumper cars this morning," he rattled, scratching his head. "I'm the Doctor, by the way," he said with a smile and extended his hand. "Which of them are you?" He asked referring to the journal writers.

River stared at his hand for a moment, her head slowly tilting to one side. "I am River." she said as she reached to shake his hand. The casual greeting to some had not often been betwoed upon her before.

Letting go of his hand she put the silk robe back one, being careful to mind her stiches. Staring back up at the wheel as she pulled her hair out she again tilted her head. "They did. They started it up again." she said answering his question though it had to be plainly obvious since the ferris wheel was moving right in front of them.

"You're the one who spoke of hope. Tell me, when did it stop a genocide?" she questioned, looking back at him, as she remembered what he had mentioned before in the journals.

"Nice to finally meet you, River," he said with his genuinely warm smile. It was impossible for him to clam up that smile of his. Even in the face of an annoying circumstance, it was always nice to meet someone new.

He blinked couple of times. The Ferris Wheel was moving. As the beast lumbered along the Doctor grinned, "All we have to do now is wait for everyone else so we can work out a plan to harness and store the energy. I think the bumper cars have small batteries in them...." The Doctor paused to breathe and listen.

"Yes, me and hope, good friends," his smile faded lass from one of friendliness to one of fondness. "Oh, humanity had been enslaved, actually. It was hope and a single word that got them out of their bind. As much as I hate remembering that time; it's actually a very inspiring period," reflecting a moment on the year that never was with it's pain and it's fear and it's hurt - that lone moment of hope shone through like a beacon.

"Yes. Face to the name." she thought of his, a small smile formed on her face for a moment, "Nothing more than the Doctor. Why is that?"

River slowly looked over the different rides in the carnival area. "Seperate machines. Seperate batteries. All lead to the same electricity. All lead to one control. A part of each other, though different when alone." she said as she analyzed the different rides as a whole. Though she did intend it to mean more than just the rides, she was also thinking of all of the people who were already there and the three who had recently arrived. She could see them all.

"Hope. Friends? Hope is an emotion. Is it also the name of a person you know?" she reached up and grabed one of the bars on the side of the ferris wheel and leaned away from it, as she listened to him. "Humanity is still enslaved, technically. 'Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose.'" she quoted from a song she had heard Jayne sing before, "People don't like being told what to do. Don't walk. When to sleep. When to eat. What to eat. They knows all. They control all. Soon people will rebel. Though won't know what to do afterwards." she was partially answering him as well as thinking of the different arguments back from the Academy.

"Inspiring period. You travel." her head tilted as she began to try to read him. "Your machine. It isn't here?" she wondered the last part as she tried to look around again. "What time period are you currently speaking about? What others have you been to?" she said looking back at him again, the more she read in him the more curious she became; almost enough to forget her curiosities of his ideas of hope before, but yet not enough.

Andy couldn't tell whether he felt more high or just completely knocked out, but he knew he felt like hell, couldn't see straight, and was lightheaded and dizzy. So, to say the least, making his way up to the carnival for Martha's little meeting or whatever had been a bit of a chore. In fact, he'd only nearly managed to regain his balance at the last minute - twice - when he'd somehow almost tripped over his own two feet when only one of his feet was actually on the ground at any given time.

He vaguely registered the sound of voices - one male and one female - but he couldn't see them from where he'd come in and he was too doped up to consider the possibility of just following the voices the way he had when he'd heard Luna in the woods their first day in this dump. Instead, he smirked stupidly to himself as he hoisted himself up onto the control platform for a teacup ride. "Do not drive or..." he paused and laughed, pushing buttons at random after resting one of the crutches against the railing to lean on the other more heavily. "...operate heavy machinery..."

Oh man, he was really gone. He definitely should've waited on that Vicodin until he could get some food in his stomach... Half of him wanted to laugh like a hyena and the other half wanted to throw up. Or maybe it was a third wanting to laugh, a third wanting to puke, and a third wanting to sleep. That sounded more up his alley right about then. "Work, you fucker," he snapped, slamming his fist down on one of the buttons and furrowing his brow in frustration when the rusty teacups remained static

George was still exhausted and pissed off at the events of that morning, but the fact that she no was no longer all that dirty - she'd even washed her clothes and almost died in the cold waiting for them to dry enough so she could wear them again - made everything that little bit better.

She had read something about a meeting in the journal, and decided to check it out. Hopefully it wouldn't be to form a sort of survival cult thing. George had seen too many movies. Nobody she'd heard of so far seemed the cult type. Not much, anyway.

George recognized the wobbling dude screaming at the Teacups - Andy - and approached him while trying to fight back laughter. "Eaaaasy tiger." She said when she stopped next to him. "What's up with you?"

At the sound of a voice so close to him when he hadn't expected it, Andy tried to whirl around, only managing in his Vicodin-induced haze to trip over himself and the crutches, toppling over enough that he had to grab the railing to keep from falling over completely. "Jesus Christ, warn a guy!" he gasped before pulling himself back to his feet completely and putting both crutches under his arms again. He grinned. "Geeeeorge. Right?" he asked, squinting and pointing at her.

He looked back over at the tea cups which were still not moving and frowned. "What the fuck good is a carnival with rides that don't motherfucking go?" he grumped. Then he looked back at George. "Up with me? Huh?" he was confused. Blinking slowly, his lips spread into a mischievous grin, like the kid that got into the cookie jar and managed to eat the cookie before being caught. "Bob gave me Vicodin. I feel awesome," he said even though it wasn't entirely true. As much as he felt pretty damned well numbed, he also still felt a little queasy. George didn't need to know that, though, so he kept it to himself.

He was in crutches. Oh, great, another victim of this stupid fucking place. "Warn a guy about what?" she asked, confused. Was she supposed to scream miles away that she was coming? That was just stupid. "Yeah, George." She answered.

Okay, he was definitely not sober, and if there was booze in this place, George wanted to know. Though he didn't smell like booze, which only confused her further. "I know. Just another useless thing to add to the list of fucking useless shit this place has to offer." George bitterly concurred, looking at the teacups. She was about to elaborate on the 'what's up with you?' question, but Andy did it himself not long after. Vicodin. George had never taken Vicodin, but she'd heard of it. Very popular lately.

"Isn't that shit supposed to make you hallucinate?" she asked, unimpressed. Booze, she'd be a go. But not psychotropic painkillers. She looked him over again, frowning. "Also, shouldn't you sit down, maybe?"

"If you're gonna come up on him like that," Andy clarified, shifting himself into a more comfortable position on the crutches and leaning his back against the control box for the ride. "When a dude is playing with toys, he tunes out the whole world. Lesson for the day, Geeeeorgie," he replied, drawing her name out in a lame attempt at an impression of Pennywise the Clown when he'd been talking to little George Denbrough before ripping the child to shreds.

At her bitter agreement that this place was fucking useless, as was most of the things in it, Andy nodded. "Amen, sister," he mumbled, grimacing when he felt his stomach tumble uncomfortably again. When it felt as though the urge to vomit had once again passed, Andy raised an eyebrow at her.

"Hallucinate? I dunno, I feel like I'm gonna puke, actually, but my leg doesn't fuckin' hurt anymore, or my ear for that matter, so I can take a hallucination. Small price to pay," he replied with a shrug. At her second comment, Andy gave another shrug. "Pro'lly," he replied lazily and dropped himself down onto the stool behind the control panel for the teacups. "I heard other people," he informed her. "But..." he let his voice trail off and imidated the impression Bob had done when he asked what sort of effect the Vicodin would have. He was out of it. "Can't figure out by the sound where they're at, so...here I am."

He looked over his shoulder at the teacup ride again and sighed. "And I thought just maybe I could amuse myself in the mean time, but the fuckin' ride won't go, so...guess not." His eyes were half-lidded when he looked back at her. "I just wanna sleeeeep," he moaned. "You look like you got out in one piece," he commented in addition, nodding toward her. "Lucky you."

It...just had to be a carnival.

The survivor's meeting had to be a carnival, didn't it?

Cheryl fought with a strong sense of deja vu as she walked deeper into the once cheery cluster of rides and game stands. The strange feeling of reality doubling certainly wasn't helped by the fact that the first ride she happened across was a merry-go-round and, for a long moment, all she could manage to do was to stand and to stare at the immobile horses with their bright paint flecked off in irregular patterns. As she stared, Cheryl held her breath - just waiting for a dark form to resolve itself from amongst the horses and to approach her with knife raised...

"You're acting really stupid," she muttered to herself. A wet and shaking hand brushed the tumbling bangs from in front of her eyes and she drew a long breath. Tipping her head, she could pick out a few different voices in a few different directions but she felt no great need to search them out; when it was time for the meeting to come to order, she'd meet up with everyone else.

"At least there's no creepy rabbit suits around," Cheryl murmured in a low tone as she walked idly toward the raised dais of the carousel. Her arms crossed loosely over herself, she tried not to think too much of any one thing as she climbed nimbly up amongst the deathly still horses. "It could be worse..."

Lexie managed to meander from the theater to the carnival. She'd been peeking at that journal a bit and checking it out as the notes inside grew and grew. She knew they hadn't been there before. It was like the paper and ink had a life of it's own. So, upon seeing some cheerful entry about a meeting and a 'party' at the carnival she put on her brave face and made her way toward the tallest looming structure in town.

The sun was warm on the dusky-blue of her scrubs, and for the moment Lexie didn't feel too terrible. As she passed through the gates, passing a few games and a ride or two she sort of just coached herself to breathe. This was creepy, yes. Perhaps, it could have been worse. She could be... Okay, so she didn't know how it could be worse.

"It could be worse," she heard a voice say and again her head snapped in the direction of the voice. She was feeling jumpy, and not seeing someone before they spoke was enough to make the petite woman jump right out of her crocs.

Squinting, she peered into the mess of horses and thought for sure she saw a figure there. "Hello?" She asked, trying to yet again seem as non-threatening as possible. Had someone dropped her off in some freaky horror flick, or what?

God she hoped she was on candid camera or something.

The sound of someone calling from that close caused Cheryl to jump a little and, much to her embarrassment, she even uttered a small sound of surprise. One of her hands, white knuckled and tense, gripped even more tightly on the pole connecting the horse behind which she had been standing to the roof of the carousel and Cheryl played briefly with the idea of simply staying hidden until the owner of the voice passed along. The thought of hiding was only reinforced when she noticed that the stranger, a woman a little bit older than Cheryl herself, appeared to be wearing scrubs but Cheryl soon dismissed the idea as just further stupidity; how was she ever supposed to survive this if she just kept hiding from everyone?

"Hello," Cheryl called in answer. She moved slowly and carefully until she was standing where she could easily be seen from the other woman's perspective and she even lifted a single hand in something of a vague wave. "Here for the meeting, I take it?"

"Hello," Lexie echoed, more warmly than her initial greeting. She spied as the figure came out from the merry-go-round and noticed that she wasn't too much different in age than she was.

"Yeah, I uh, read something in this..." She said, reaching into the slightly lighter pack to wave the journal around. The first stop she'd made once she'd been on her own was to that thrift shop to drop off that breast pump. If somebody needed it, they'd have to find it there because Lexie certainly felt a little mortified at the thought of having one. She really hoped someone wasn't trying to tell her something.

"I'm Lexie," she said with a meek smile. She felt off balance here, and it was hard to sort of regain it at the moment. She was in a weird ass place. A really weird ass place. "Where are we?" She just had to introduce the elephant in the room, really.

"The journals?" Cheryl asked as she narrowed her eyes slightly at the book which the woman was waving about. She nodded slightly and gestured in some vague direction to her left from which a few voices seemed to be coming. "Yea, I think that Doctor guy put something in there about the meeting. I don't think it's really started, though, since there's only a few others hanging around."

"I'm Cheryl," she traded name for name with a slight nod and a faint smile. The part about it being nice to meet Lexie, though perhaps true, was left unsaid since it would only come off as false in any situation like this one. Cheryl did have to blink slightly at the directness of the latter question but she soon laughed and shook her head. "Your guess is as good as anyone's. The kit things we got when we woke up had Vas Captio on it but that could be a name, a hint, a puzzle - who really knows?" She paused a moment and then offered Lexie something of a sympathetic look. "Is this your first day here?"

Sam made his way to the carnival when he saw the Doctor's note in the journals. His beaten up watch showed that it was still a little ahead of schedule, but he wasn't sure if that was a bad thing. There were a lot of things they needed to go over. Shannon hadn't returned to the museum after leaving that morning and he wondered if he shouldn't go looking for her. She hadn't looked that great, but had insisted she was fine. He'd made his way to the gym for a quick cold shower and then tried to do some exploring. There seemed to be an abundance of junk in this ghost town but not that many useful tools. Not that he would've necessarily known what to do with them anyway. That had always been Dean and his dad's area of specialty.

He entered the carnival gates and started making his way through the rides, pausing to look up at something called the hammer. He could almost remember going on a ride like this one once, when he was younger. He wasn't sure, but he thought Dean had given him hell for yelling when the free fall had started. Of course he'd been twelve and above lame carnival rides even then.

He sighed and leaned against the metal fencing that usually kept the line to the side.

One more thing on her 'Things I'd Rather Be Getting Drunk Than Doing' list was the meeting at the carnival. She'd told Martha and the Doctor both that she'd be there. Not to mention...Sam.

That thought brought the bottle of liquor back to her lips as she meandered in. Her gait was, to say the least, less than as graceful as it rightfully should've been given her background in dance, but she hardly noticed. She wasn't drunk yet, but she was getting there and the sooner, the better.

Knocking back another healthy swig, Shannon stopped dead in her tracks seeing Sam straight ahead, leaning against the fence outside a ride called the Hammer. She capped the bottle and tucked it under her arm for probably the millionth time that day and looked over her shoulder for Domeki. After having talked to him about all of her suspicions - some she hadn't even realized she'd had until she'd actually voiced them - seeing Sam just standing there and no one else in plain sight made her uncomfortable and tense all over again.

So, Shannon did what any person in her shoes - at least she hoped it wasn't just her - would do; she stood there and stared anywhere but at Sam's face. Luckily for her, just then she heard a cacophony of other voices scattered about, so she quickly covered by looking around for their sources. Hopefully either she'd find them and have an excuse not to be alone with Sam...or Domeki would come; either way was fine with her.

Domeki walked into the Carnival with a slow but steady step. He hadn't yet had enough of the liquor now in Shannon's possession to appear even slightly tipsy but he thought that fact might just change by the end of this arranged meeting. Initially, he had intended to stay clear minded enough to be able to answer questions and to absorb the meaningful answers given by the others - should anyone else have any answers about either this place or exactly what was happening. Now, he merely hoped that something useful would come from all of this, even if that something was little more than a better understanding of any common element among all of those gathered.

He followed idly a few paces behind Shannon and he paused when she came to a sudden stop. An eyebrow arched and he opened his mouth to ask if something was wrong - but the answer to that question seemed to be standing a few feet away from the pair of them in the form of a rather tall young man. Conclusions were easy to find when Shannon was studiously avoiding looking at the stranger and the stranger, himself, was rather unique - both in height and in...something else - and Domeki briefly wondered if avoiding the possible confrontation entirely would be the wisest course.

"Do you want to try to find where the others are?" He finally asked Shannon. It was a slight offer of an escape from having to spend an awkward moment with her suspected stranger and he wouldn't blame her if she chose to take it - but he, personally, found himself rather curious. "I hear other voices from over there."

Luna Lovegood was completely, and utterly sugar high, as she had never before been. A dozen pixie sticks, a bottle of honey sweetened tea and a package of Almond Joy, and she was practically flying without even a broom in sight. She had floated off from the Doctor at some point or another, and had suddenly remembered that people were going to meet at something called a Vail of Carnies. Odd Muggle names.

She had hoped to find Piper somewhere in her travels, as the crow flies, but found nothing. Perhaps because crows never did fly straight, but always were distracted by shiny things. Luna herself was not as interested in things of a shiny nature, as much as those with scales or fur or fairy dust. While she did not venture far into the forest, she did go in at least enough to try to investigate enough to see if the gnomes had come out of hiding yet. They had not.

In fact, there were no small rodents or birds in the forest at all. Except for at least one vulture that had flown overhead.

So she was a bit late to the party when she finally both found and remembered the Vail of Carnies.

Spotting Sam right away, as he was monstrously tall, and went skip-running over to him immediately. "Saaaaaaaam!" And she leapt, quite well she thought, to hop onto his back. Small hands clung to his shoulders, as she looked over his shoulder at him. "Afternoon Sam." A goofy smile graced her lips, but nothing else spoke if this being unusual. Even if she was nearly bouncing with sugary goodness.

Sam had been lost in thoughts of the past as he leaned forward onto the railing and stared at the deserted ride in front of him. His senses seemed off, since he was only aware of Luna a split second before she pounced him. Delicate hands clutched his shoulders and he craned his neck awkwardly to see the girl who had just jumped him with a look of bewilderment. "Luna?" He asked in response to her unmistakably cheerful greeting. He turned slightly to the right, going in a half circle, in order to see her better and realized they weren't alone, he spotted Shannon and someone else a few feet away and gave out a small embarrassed laugh.

He fought for control as he felt warmth making it's way into his face and raised his eyebrows as he turned slightly to the left away from Shannon and the newcomer. "Luna," he said, his voice low. "Could you, um, get off me?" He knit his eyebrows in confusion as he looked at her, not entirely sure if this greeting was normal or not. The truth was he hadn't known Luna long enough to know. Something seemed different about her though, she seemed amplified somehow and it made Sam uneasy.

Not only that, it seemed weird that she was alone. His expression changed slightly into one that was more neutral. "Where's Andy?"

Bob meandered to the Carnival in record time. Well, maybe not record, but he was there pretty damned quick. He was honestly disappointed not to find Jay at the Not-Quick-Stop when he stopped for some cigs, so he assumed that he probably was on his way to the fucking meeting. That's what Bob would do, anyway.

Coming up into the fair grounds, Bob looked around. This place looked like the Shore all shut down for winter. Shut down and fucking broken down. Looking at the people scattered around, Bob tried to find just the right fucking place. Oh, look a busted ass cotton candy stand. Sweet.

Jay hadn't really struggled to find the Carnival, since it was close to the Not-Quick-Stop. He had just walked slowly over there, because he was bored and had no idea what was happening.

A bunch of people were scattered around the place but he didn't recognize anyone. No, there was Shannon, a huge dude and another hot blonde. But before he managed to get to them, Jay spotted Silent Bob being all stealthy by the cotton candy stand. Which, by the amount of suckage of that place, probably had no cotton candy at all.

"Shit Silent Bob I thought I'd never see you again." He told Bob, positioning himself to his right and placing an elbow on the stand counter. He surveyed the actual stand, and frowned. "Fucking figures..." Jay shook his head disapprovingly.

"So what's you been up to, lunchbox, besides writing journal entries like a little candy-ass schoolgirl?"

Bob found himself grinning like a fucking kid with his hand in the candy jar when Jay finally fucking materialized. Now he'd REALLY not have to talk anymore. He wouldn't even have to say his own damn name. Things could be even more fucking normal then him leaning up against shit and wishing he had some fucking shit to sell.

'Fucking figures,' Jay commented about the stand and Bob could only nod approvingly. The fucking stand was lame as shit.

Rolling his eyes to the comment about the journal shit Bob would only roll his eyes and squinting locate Cheryl and some chick over on the merry go round. Pointing he nodded with a shrug. He'd been hanging around with Cheryl and that was about fucking it. Oh yeah, and Andy who he pointed to as well with another shrug.

Good fucking shit.

Hell yeah, Bob was happy to see him. Jay nodded and grinned as well. "Right? This place is full of useless shit and none of the fun, man. Even the fucking beer's dead." Jay slumped his shoulders in disappointment.

Jay looked over to where Silent Bob had pointed. "You fucked that chick?" Then, Bob pointed somewhere else, and Jay followed again. "And that dude, too?!" He asked, slightly outraged and shocked. He hadn't fucked anyone yet, how come Silent Bob was getting more ass?!

It was all Bob could do to roll his eyes. As much as he'd hate to admit it, he missed Jay's attempt at interpreting his points and faces - as off as they sometimes were.

With a shrug and a pull from his freshly lit cig, Bob curled his lip and gestured with his palms up asking silently, 'well, what the fuck have you been up to?'
