Day Twelve - Mid-morning
Who: Andy Gallagher and Lexie Grey
What: Checking in with Doc Lex
When: Day Twelve - mid-morning
Where: In the gym
Rating: PG-13 (to be safe, but it'll probably only be for Andy's language)
Status: Complete

Things had quieted down quite a bit. It seemed like the worst was over; that the threat was gone. Andy knew better than to fully believe that, but he was also willing to allow himself to relax, even if just a little.

He wondered if the happenings in Guthrie and then the ones in Cold Oak had changed him or if he'd always been like this... Andy wondered when he'd become a poor man's Winchester. Somewhere along the way, he'd made it his business to keep tabs on the people he cared about, but mostly the women. While Luna had made it pretty clear to him that she was completely disinterested in having him as a buddy anymore - which didn't mean he couldn't still wonder if she was all right - and Kim seemed to be okay now that she'd found someone she knew from the real world, there was still Elliot. And Doc Lex. Elliot had taken something to the side, but she looked like a fighter; she was hanging in there and doing her thing in spite of it all. He wasn't too worried about her for the time being, because she seemed to be okay. It was Lexie that he was worried about.

It hadn't been lost on him the way she hadn't joined Elliot and Dr. House in their makeshift rounds. If she thought everyone had failed to notice the way she sat alone, staring out at nothing, she was only fooling herself, because Andy had noticed. He'd been noticing for more hours than he cared to count, by now. In fact, it had taken a lot of will power on his part not to invade her personal space by sitting beside her and offering the poor woman a penny for her thoughts, but he had a feeling, judging by her body language and the not-quite-vacant but very far away look on her face, that it wouldn't be appreciated, so he'd kept his distance.

Until today. He couldn't just sit back watching her and wondering if she was all right, anymore. So, finally, he made his way over to her and cringed inwardly as he noticed the lump on her shoulder. Never mind the dried blood on her clothes. Carefully, wincing slightly at the way the new stitches Elliot had been kind enough to put in his leg pulled and shifted when he moved, he sat down beside her. For a long moment, he said nothing, just looking out over the injured the way she seemed to be. "How ya holdin' up, Doc?" he asked quietly. He didn't want to push buttons or upset her; just wanted to make sure she was still okay when she didn't entirely look it. He gave her a sideways glance, then. "You doin' okay? I mean, all things considered...?"

Andy smirked right back at her. "Less well adapted, huh? Is that a nice way of saying I suck?" he joked. When she went on to tease that she was currently was high, he shook his head. "Yeah, uh huh," he said doubtfully. He sort of wished it had been so easy to be high on that stuff. Marijuana was one thing and Ketamine, he found out the hard way, was quite another.

"Yeah, really, that because the green ones taste like ass. No matter what kind of lollipops they are, the green ones, I sometimes swear are ass-flavored or something. They are disgusting. Anyone who likes green and I cannot be friends," he insisted. His hand went back into action rubbing slowly up and down her arm when she shuddered against him even if he knew she was just goofing around.

Eyebrows raised slightly, Andy smirked to himself and looked out in front of him, continuing to walk beside her to nowhere in particular. "I could tell you," he replied in reference to the connections, "but then I'd have to kill you," he finished in a deadpan before looking down at her and cocking his eyebrows as he grinned. At the mention again of the Doctor, Andy pulled a face. "He calls himself the Doctor, actually, I heard. Not even a doctor. So weird," he agreed. "All I know about him is that he knew Martha on the outside..." The admission made Andy's smile fall away almost instantly. Martha, after all, was still missing and in a place like Vas Captio, that meant if she wasn't dead, she would be wishing she was...

With a succinct, affirmative nod, Andy's smile returned, if a little forced the second time around. "No Minnow, no Titanic; got it," he agreed with a wink. Pretending to be scandalized, Andy took a few steps away from her all for show. "No way, I'm never touching that shit again, are you kidding me?" he laughed before returning to her side and wrapping his arm around her waist again as though he'd never moved away.

"I'll call it inexperienced," she chided. Andy was really good at putting himself down, wasn't he? Well, playful or not, Lexie wasn't going to feed into that whole line of thoght at all. 'Uh huh,' he said, shaking his head, elliciting a bump from her hips. She would have elbowed him in the ribs; but the arm closest to him was the one in the sling, so minor hip check it was.

"I wonder if it has something to do with the green dye?" She speculated, it wouldn't surprise her if the dye had something to do with the nasty taste. Or, maybe the green was just sort of psychosomatic. Afterall, how many green things really tasted all that good? Grass? Nope. Green Jello? Icky. Green was a univeral color of 'don't trust this!' as evidenced by the fact that the universal color for slime is green.

Andy's hand ran up and down her arm in a playful action of comforting as Lexie shuddered in response to the thought of consuming anything green. Green lollipops in particular. "Those are some super secret connections you've got, then?" Another perfect opportunity for an elbow to the ribs wasted on a gimped arm. What a pair the two of them made down one leg and one arm respectively. "Oh," Lexie said at the mention of Martha. Maybe this 'Doctor' guy was a doctor, afterall? He did know Martha afterall, who was a physician. "I'm kind of sad I never got to meet her." She was, really. It was kind of like wanting to meet the person who'd put so much work into something you used. Though, it was probably an over romatacized notion.

As Andy moved away, Lexie again felt a hint of loss. Being held there, against Andy who'd seen her at her most vulnerable moment here was a comfort. There was noting to guard, nothing to pretend, nothing to turn on. Her back felt chilled and for a moment a flash of disappointment crept across her features, even as se tried to smile at his insistance he was never touching Ketamine again (she couldn't blame him on that one.)

"I'm really glad I met you, Andy," she said quietly, reclaiming her spot back against him. Her side had felt cold without him there. Her words might have been lost on the wind, but she turned her head, trying to discern if he'd heard her.

Andy laughed. "Oh I'm the inexperienced one with drugs?" he asked, raising his eyebrows and smirking at her. "I'm willing to bet that you're definitely wrong about that. In fact, if you're the more experienced, I might just have to bow down to you, because I've been a stoner for as long as I can freakin' remember," he told her. It was a pretty big exaggeration, but it had been at least ten years. Maybe just less than, he supposed, but still. If Lexie was more into drugs than Andy was, he would have to color himself impressed. The bump from her hip elicited another laugh and he had to keep himself from poking her playfully in the stomach. It would've been reflexive, but he'd had his hand smacked away for doing that one too many times to think it'd be a good idea. Women didn't seem to take kindly to that sort of thing, joking or not. He'd learned his lesson on that a long time ago.

"Maybe," he replied thoughtfully. "I've never eaten anything green and artificially flavored that I actually liked, I don't think..." Green Jell-O? No, that was gross. Green Jolly Ranchers? Disgusting. Green Slime Kool-Aid? Nasty.

Nodding, Andy looked back at her gravely. "Pretty super secret," he agreed. Then, he cracked a smile. "No, really, it's just that if I told you, you'd think I was a freak and you'd never feel like talking to me again. And, you know, I'd miss ya," he admitted. Luna had called his mind thing Unforgivable and she was her own pleasant kind of freak; Lexie would probably never understand.

Andy looked down and nodded slightly. "Yeah, Martha was good people," he said. He remembered the way she'd been too stubborn to run, having wanted to stay behind and protect him from the cougar and he remembered wondering if it was because she'd been in the military or because she thought he was weak. He remembered having used his mind thing for the first time in a year - well, with the exception of siccing the gay porn on that fucking douche back in Guthrie and sending visions to Sam when he'd first shown up here. Even if he might've saved her life doing it, it hadn't mattered in the long run and he was ashamed for having used it at all. "She was cool. You'd have liked her." A short pause passed and then he smirked. "The tiny titan that she was...man, that chick was like five feet and three inches of bad assery. She was impressive. I'm quite honestly proud to say I knew her," he finished with a sad sort of smile.

Lexie seemed to lean back against him a little, although Andy wasn't sure if it was just his imagination or if she really was doing so. Another sad smile crossed his lips as he just barely was able to make out what she said and she looked over at him. "I don't think I've ever heard that before, Lex," he admitted. "I'm really glad I met you, too."

And then came the nervous twist in his stomach as he looked back at her and he had to look away. Andy had seen her with Dean in the gym. He'd lost Luna to Dean, in his own mind, and he wasn't going to set himself up to lose someone else. It was pointless to look at Lexie as anything other than a friend, so he pushed it all away and furrowed his brow as he looked out in front of him. "You're a cool chick, Lexie," he said quietly and looked back at her, giving her a small smile.

When Andy said he'd been a stoner for a decade, Lexie sort of snorted. She'd had lots of friends who were stroners. Though, she'd never met the ever ellusive functional and highly successful stoner. You know, the one that NORML said existed out there every day. That's not say she didn't love her stoner friends; she just always sort of wondered what they'd do if they couldn't spend their days half baked.

"So, you have some weird connections that make people think you're freaky? What are you, some super secret porn star? Gay porn? Listen, I'm not going to judge..." Lexie smirked, clearly she was teasing. She couldn't help it, he left the door wide open for her imagination to run inside and make things up about him. Something told her that Andy wouldn't mind being that his humor seemed to border on self depricating anyway.

"Big boom, small package, eh?" Lexie laughed a little. A doctor who kicked ass - that sounded almost too Prime-Time TV. Lexie hopped a little to avoid a tree root that had attempted to snare her footsteps. They were actually coming back up on the road again; they'd been walking for a while, hadn't they. "How's your leg holding up?"

Andy looked kind of odd when he'd admitted that he hadn't heard that from someone before. "They were probably just too intimidated by your super secret connections to tell you." Damn, another missed elbowing opportunity.

There had been a subtle shift in Andy's expression, one that Lexie couldn't even pretend to be able to read. 'You're a cool chick,' he said and Lexie shrugged. "Yeah, well, I've worked hard to attain this level of coolness."

Laughing, Andy shook his head. "Gay porn? Do I look like the type that would be a porn star at all much less a gay porn star?" he asked, pretending to be offended by the playful accusation. Although, at the mention of gay porn, he couldn't help smirking at the ungratefulness Sam had shown when they'd met up on the first day here after Andy had sent him a snippet so that he would know who the vision was coming from. He still felt a little badly about that, even if he did find it pretty funny.

"Yeah, you could say that. She used to be in the military," he replied. Stepping over the same tree root, Andy held a hand out in front of Lexie for a split second to catch her if pain shot up and caused her to trip. When she didn't, he let the hand fall to his side again. "Good as it can be, I guess," he replied. "It's, y'know...I can walk, so whatever, right?" he asked, shrugging.

With a huff and smile, Andy shook his head at Lexie's suggestion that no one had ever told him they were glad to meet him because they were intimidated. If the everyman knew the mixed blessing and curse that Andy carried with him, they probably would be more than intimidated; they'd probably be afraid. And run like hell. He wouldn't blame them. That was part of the reason why he didn't want to tell Lexie about the mind thing. She'd be afraid. Like Tracy. "Yeah I dunno about all that, but it sounds pretty good," he admitted.

Raising his eyebrows slightly, Andy smirked at Lexie when she said she worked hard to attain her level of coolness. "It shows," he said appreciatively as they came up on the road again. "Shit, we've been walking for a lot longer than it felt like..." he thought aloud. He hated to leave her, but he also didn't want to make her stick around if she was ready to go back inside. "You okay...?" Andy definitely wasn't going to leave her if she wasn't, though, whether she wanted him to or not.

"I told you, Andy, I'm not judging!" She laughed, a wave of her free hand to punctuate. "Besides, who's to say there isn't a legion of gay men out there who can only get off to you?" He acted offended, but the smirk gave away something that Lexie interpreted as amusement. She'd take that.

"The military? Wow." Lexie shook her head as she tried to process the whole idea that was this mythical Martha Jones. To Lexie she sounded almost superhuman, especially given what she'd read in the journals. Lexie sort of wondered if she could walk on water, too. In all seriousness, she really did wish that she had met her, just so she knew what was fact and what was fiction.

"Hey, I wanted to make sure.." She responded to his status report on his leg. "You know me, Doctor Lexie Grey, always vigilant." Even if she wasn't a military doctor who could organize an entire clinic on her own and fight off animals and whatnot, she was pretty darn good at her job. Or, at least, she liked to think so.

"Time flies..." Lexie replied, coming up to a stop on the road. The entrance to the gym was actually in sight. 'You okay?' he asked and Lexie had no choice but to think about it. She wanted to be cool and play it all down while at the same time letting him know that he'd helped her more than she could really say.

"I'm doing a lot better," she said with a small smile aimed right at him. It meant a lot to her, having a friend like Andy. Lexie tried not to judge or make assumptions, but when she saw something good in someone? She held on with both fists and she made sure they knew about it. In Andy she saw something genuine, something she couldn't really articulate because she didn't really know what to call it. Loyalty? Friendship? Kindness? Almot a wholesomeness? Whatever it was, it was precious, and not in the sense of cute little kids; in that rare priceless meaning of the word. "Very much thanks to you."

Unable to keep up the front of being offended, Andy laughed. "Oh, man...that is not right, Lex," he replied. The very thought of men getting off to him just... Andy shuddered less than playfully. Gross, dude. To each their own, but nasty!

Nodding, Andy smiled fondly at the thought. "Yeah, that's what she said anyway," he replied with a bit of a shrug. After all, he'd really only had her word to go on. Based on what he'd gotten to know, that had been more than enough for him. He looked back at Lexie and grinned. "Lexie Grey, damn good doctor," he replied. He wondered if he'd ever told her his last name. Or even if she'd care if he had or hadn't.

It saddened him a little that he hadn't gotten to know Martha better and he wasn't going to make the same mistake twice. He'd decided when he'd first heard that Martha had gone missing that he was going to make damn sure that he got to know every single person here that he enjoyed being around.

Andy returned her smile and bowed his head slightly. "I do what I can," he said sincerely and looked back up at her. He paused for a moment before looking away from her and back at the gym. "Are you ready to go back in or you wanna hang out for a little longer?" he offered.

Lexie couldn't contain the bit of laughter at his response a slow trickle of giggles started in her throat and would not rest until she was snorting away. "Sorry, your reaction is priceless." She squeezed his arm with a shake of her head.

"Why thank you, Andy -- " She paused, she didn't know his last name. "Andy Winerbacher, damned good friend." Yes, Andy, she'd just made up a last name for you; hope you like it!

'I do what I can,' he said quietly, and Lexie knew just what he meant. "I think we all do," she said with a cant of her head and a twinge at the corner of her mouth hinting a smile gone by.

"Yeah, I think it's probably a good idea. I wouldn't want House wondering if I'd run off and tried to take care of patients..." She sighed, shaking her head. That Doctor House? One giant bastard.

At Lexie's slightly unexpected response, Andy smirked. It was good to hear her laugh. Really laugh, that was. He hadn't meant to do it, but it made him happy that he could. "Well, come on, I mean really," he persisted, laughing along with her. It wasn't right!

Lexie paused for a moment and he realized that she didn't know his last name. It wasn't that he was protective of it; it just hadn't ever really occurred to him to give it out. With a huff of laughter, Andy shook his head. "Oh man, yeah no...that's not my last name, but I'll give you an A for effort..." he replied. "For what it's worth, it's Gallagher. Andy Gallagher," he informed her, giving her a small smile.

Nodding, Andy offered another weak smile in response, giving her a gentle squeeze. She was right. They probably all did the best that they could. But, it was more than he really wanted to think about for now. He'd given her a chance to be herself for a minute and allow herself to break down the way he'd been pretty sure she'd needed to. She was ready to go back in and he wasn't surprised. Sometimes too much emotion all in one go was overwhelming. He knew the feeling.

"Yeah, okay. I'm gonna hang out here for a little bit. I'm not ready to head in again but if you need me, you know where to find me," he said with a small smile. "Any time, Lex. I mean that."

"Hey, I hear there's good money to be made in the gay porn business..." Alright, she hadn't really heard that; but, there could be, right? There was good money in porn in general, anyway. Not a good path to wander down, Lexie.

"Gallagher," she said thoughtfully. It wasn't like she was working to commit it to memory; it was more like taking it for a spin. It seemed to fit him well enough. A friendly, strong, comfortable last name. Yeah, she liked it. "Nice meeting you, Andy Gallagher."

She had started to pull away as he said he'd hang out there. Maybe the gym was just too much for him. Lexie could get that. "Alright," she said, looking away toward the structure. "Same here," she said, hoping he knew if there was anything she could do for him, she would.

"See you around," she smiled, walking off in the direction of the makeshift hospital. Back to the trenches.
