Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:!complete, day 12, insider, location: underground tunnels, remy lebeau, the doctor (ten)

Day 12: 2nd Meeting
Who: Insider & Remy LeBeau [open to The Doctor at some point maybe?]
What: 2nd Meeting
When: 1pm
Where: The tunnels under the gas station
Rating: TBD
Status: Complete

It wasn't as easy to make it into the tunnels in the daylight. It required some sort of diversion because there was no way someone wouldn't notice the Insider creeping away from the group. Especially not with the perception that had been given as to the nature of the injuries suffered during the earthquake. It was difficult too to climb down the ladder once privacy had been attained and the trap door opened into the floor of the back room of the building. Injuries were still evident even if not as severe as they'd been played out to be.

In the alcove down two turns away from the ladder, the Insider found and donned the shapeless black jacket. Slipping the mask and night vision goggles from inside the pockets, they were slid into place and adjusted to ensure no hair or any other distinguishing features were evident. The Insider didn't trust Remy not to be there with a light of some sort this time. Now that things had been planned in advance through the journals. It was a risk to go and see him but that was something the Insider was willing to deal with.

Creeping through the darkness was a chore as the medication for pain wore slowly off. It would have been better had this taken place after medication rounds but there was no helping it. The gas station was close by and the Insider stopped short, waiting and listening around the bend from the suggested rendez-vous spot. Breath was held for a long moment before finally speaking in the low, growl of the previous meeting. "Cajun man. Charmer. Are you there?"

Jenny wasn't climbing out of the tunnel with him. She had decided that some time ago when he'd first suggested it. She didn't trust him to protect her now that he'd exposed her to the Doctor. Now he wanted to lead her up through the town back to the gym? If she fell for that he'd have an easy way to expose her to everyone as he paraded her for everyone to see. There had to be some way she could get away from him but he was so close. He was imposing. Strong where she was definitely not.

"You didn't scare me," she said quietly. Taking a deep breath, she wiped at her eyes with her fingertips and forced a smile onto her face. It was strained but that was to be expected considering this entire situation. "Just startled me when you raised your voice." Her mind worked a mile a minute trying to figure out what to do.

Her brows furrowed when he continued to try to reassure her that he was going to keep her safe, that no one was going to hurt her. That she was beautiful? Her hands fluttered over the bandaged stitches marking her face in three places. The one that was so close to her eye twinged with pain and she shook her head. Her tone was soft and tinged with self-consciousness when she spoke. "Please don't mock me, Remy. I'm vain. I like to hear that but I'm smart enough to know that the stitches and the cuts beneath are not beautiful. You're not going to sweet talk me that way."

She looked up at him then, her eyes slightly wider than before but they held no fear in them. "Are you... sure you can get me back in there without anyone noticing?" she asked, moving closer to him, her fingers sliding down along his forearms as she did. "If I go up there with you, I'm putting myself entirely in her hands." Her hands slipped into his. "I have know you'll keep me safe."

When she said that he hadn't scared her, he nodded some and smiled more, but was lifting that hand again, to ghost his fingers just above the cuts on her face, not touching, but close enough she'd feel the warmth. "I like scars." He reminded her gently. "'Dey sexy." It was a soft reassurance, and his fingers finally lifted further to tuck some of her hair behind her ear. She was so pretty, and a few lines on her face weren't going to detract from that.

The Cajun also couldn't help but look down between them, where her chest had been left exposed, after he'd pushed her jacket off. "So are 'dey." Coolly reminded, before he looked up again. "Très agréable." A soft tease as he allowed his grin to spread out wider. Still, this wasn't the time for that and he was drawing his hand away again.

"I'm a T'ief, Chere. You know 'dat, oui? I can take t'in's outta anywhere.. can get 'dem back in, too. Ain' gon' be no problem. We go up, we take 'de lon' way back. Ain' no one gon' be out. I tell you, 'dey all checkin' out 'dem dummies, d'accord? We gon' get you back in, no problem. If someone see us, I jus' say I came an' go' you, we say we met 'fore. 'Dey ain' know no better. An' I carry you in. Done. No one gon' sugges' in a million years uh lil' fille like you doin' all 'dis. Too pretty, oui? 'De only trou'le pretty girls make is 'de boys figh'in' over 'dem. Now 'nough o' dis. Get up 'dat hole, an' shake 'dem hips while you doin' it. Gimme a show." He was nudging her towards the exit again, tightening his hand in hers. "You gon' be fine, I protec' 'de t'in's 'dat'er mine. Up."

Jenny leaned into his almost-touch somewhat instinctively. It made her sway slightly on her feet and she could have kicked herself for allowing that to distract her for even a second in this situation. This dance was coming to an end whether he, or she, liked it or not. When he touched her hair she almost bolted but held still, taking a deep breath and closing her eyes for a moment.

She missed his glance down between them but she felt the movement and could guess what he was referring to. Without her jacket there was nothing to disguise the fact that she was indeed very female. And he was a charmer, wasn't he? She opened her eyes and smiled softly, seeming almost innocent as she did so.

"I know you're a thief. You're like a cat in the dark and a very handsome man." Very handsome. More so than Tim or Gene or any other man she'd been this close to in her life. Not one thought of Nikki entered her mind when she was standing here, her hands in his. So close. She shook her hips as he commanded though she wasn't moving up toward the trap door. She was still right there, close. "This what you mean?" she asked and bit her lip with a questioning expression.

Then she was all action. His hands were holding tight to her gloves so it was easy for her to squeeze hers into fists and pull them back, leaving him with just gloves as she kicked at his shin with her boot. She didn't really want to hurt him, if she had she'd have aimed higher with that boot. She just wanted to get out of there. She took off running down the tunnels, trying to find a way to get lost in the darkness.

He should have seen that coming. He really should have. But when she pulled her hand back like that, he let out a breath, knowing he'd been duped. And when she kicked him, all Gambit did was laugh sort of breathlessly (it had hurt some, but he didn't want to let that show, he'd have a bruise) and turn to watch her take off running down the halls.

"Hey!" He shouted after her, but didn't give chase. "Call me!" He'd wait a few seconds until she disappeared into the darkness.. and only then was the Cajun slowly making his way up the steps, dropping the gloves as he did. He wouldn't need them. He was sure he wouldn't see her in the same capacity again. And for some reason, it upset him. But he was able to push it away when he came up out of the tunnel and laid eyes on the pacing, blue-suited Doctor. The smile that found his face was easy, but almost unsure.

"C'était ma faute." He assured the slightly shorter man quietly, as he pulled his body up, then slunk out of the Post Office at a slow pace, rolling his injured shoulder back some. "You ain' got no real reason t' trus' me, non?" It wasn't really a question, though he'd made it sound that way. It was just a statement of fact.

The pacing stopped. The Doctor had stood there, waiting because he needed to be certain that his friend would make it out of there in one piece. It was hard to say for certain what the clearly wounded mind of Jenny Schecter had rendered her capable of, and the Doctor didn't want to let his mind toy with the possibilities. So, he'd waited, listening for the mouth of the tunnel to stir. It had taken far, far too long. Something wasn't right.

So, he'd paced, and held his breath and when finally the door swung back the Doctor could inhale once more. The cocky bastard was alright. He shouldn't have been quite so surprised.

"That was stupidity," the Doctor proclaimed and it was so. There'd be no arguing that point. He hadn't wanted to toy with the Insider. He hadn't even wanted to acknowledge them. What had Remy done? He'd dragged the Insider home like a prize. The Doctor had made him.

Hadn't the Cajun had enough yet?

"Yeah, I do stupi' t'in's, I warne' you, non? Bu' you ain' lis'in." Yes, the Doctor had listened, but Gambit had insisted on this, and he was shaking his head some and pushing his hand back through his hair. Oh, his shoulder hurt. And his back hurt. And he felt a little sick to his stomach.

"She playe' me." It was a simple statement, and he breathed in deeply through his nose before looking over at the Doctor. "Ain' use t' bein' 'de one bein' toy wit', don' much like it." He admitted, moving gloved hands to push into the pockets of his ruined coat, black and red eyes moving past the Doctor to look over his shoulder at the rest of the town, before he turned them again and locked them onto the other man's lighter eyes. "Shoul'a lis'en. Aucune utilisation lait déversé pleurant. I ain' gon' made 'dat mis'ake 'gain." A smile came across his face then, as he stepped up closer to the Doctor to stand just two feet in front of him. Close, but not too close. "Maybe you make a mis'ake bein' my frien', non, Docteur? Trouble follow me 'roun'.. an' when 'dey ain' no trouble.. I make it." Willingly or unwillingly.

"Guess you gon' hafta live wit' your bad decision. 'Dat sucks for you." He lifted his eyebrows and the smile widened out some.

Of course he'd done something stupid. The Doctor had proclaimed it stupid several times already. He didn't need Gambit reminding him why precisely the choice he made was stupid. Furthermore, he didn't need Remy telling him that he'd been right. Once in a while he hated being right. Like right now, it would have been nice to be wrong for a change. His friend wouldn't have this sort of lost look to him and he wouldn't be forced to lick his wounds.

"You're not the only one," he responded to Remy's assessment of being a magnet for all things troublesome. Where the Doctor went destruction followed. It was just a matter of time. Literally.

The Doctor took a deep breath. He didn't want to talk about the ridiculousness of the Insider any more. He hadn't wanted to breech the topic to begin with, actually. The mutant had forced him. He hated the way he'd done that.

"At least you're alright," he breathed, stepping away from the mutant, that intimacy from earlier quite well managed at arms length, thank you.

Remy watched him step away, lifting his eyebrows some when the Doctor made no comment about the fact that he'd made it very clear the Time Lord was still stuck with him, whether he liked it or not. The smile remained simply in place, but the nod and the way his eyes lowered once, then back up, was enough to say that he'd realized he'd really screwed up whatever it was that they'd built between them. It had taken hard work and emotion to build it, and one stupid mistake to wreck it completely.

And that was exactly what the Thief had done.

"Oui. I feel grea'." The reply came without strain in his tone and without hesitation. There'd be none of that. Gambit wasn't willing to lay that out on the table, knowing the Doctor would only stare at it, then dismiss it just as quickly. However, the knowledge of that certainly wasn't deterring the demon-eyed creature across from him any. He could take a lot of abuse without batting an eye. He always had and he always would, and he often came back like a kicked puppy. Not because he felt any sense of loyalty and not because he wanted forgiveness, or love, or anything of the sort. It was simply because he had no where else to go and nothing else to do. He hadn't done it for years, but here he was.

And he was smiling right through it, all charm and grace and ego. "My cake go' burn'. Had a cake." He didn't anymore, and he was clearly mourning it, as he lowered his eyes to look down into the tunnel. There were other things he'd rather say, other things he'd rather do, other things he'd rather feel, but that remorse for the cake and the little quip about it was all that came out. They didn't have time for it, and the Doctor didn't have patience for it. Maybe later. Probably never. Remy would push it away into the pile and claim he forgot about it, and never bring it up again, no matter how badly he wanted to.

As a matter of course, the Doctor didn't make a habit of kicking people. He found that people generally kicked themselves more than he could ever dream to and in ways more harsh than he would ever dare. He had a feeling that the mutant was doing just that.

The Doctor felt for certain that Remy wasn't feeling great. He shouldn't be. Though, the liar would just be left with his lie. The Doctor didn't have the energy to coddle. Not right now, anyway. He didn't have the will to kick either. So, he let the silence run it's course until Remy went on about his cake. Which only made the Doctor shake his head with a squinch of the skin between his brows.

Oh bugger it.

He couldn't be cruel. He wouldn't be cruel. Not to a friend as loyal. The Doctor looked over his shoulder before deciding that his path ought to take him right in front of his friend. He had to walk that way.

"Come on, we need to get to the carnival for some more bolts." He reached out, patting Remy on the bicep as he went on. It was clear enough to the Doctor that Gambit felt foolish enough as it was. No point in putting salt in the wound.

Gambit was relieved when the Doctor finally spoke up and he lifted his head, looking away from the tunnel, and locked his eyes onto the Doctor, as the man began walking. And when that hand impacted with his shoulder in a pat.. that was when he felt it. He felt a little dizzy at first, then blinked his eyes a few times to clear his vision, but it didn't work.

"Docteur--" Was all he managed to get out before his legs gave out beneath him and he collapsed bonelessly to the ground outside the post office.

The Doctor was three steps away before Gambit had said his name. Turning quickly he managed to catch just in time the collision of Gambit's body with the ground. Three steps. One. Two. Three. The Doctor couldn't help but feel like he was moving in slow motion as he came up beside the Cajun.

"Remy? Gambit?" He asked, his words coming slow now, too. Oh no, he managed to think, realizing that systems were shutting down. First movement. Now speech. And now the Doctor was falling as well, landing in a crumpled heap beside his friend.
