Day 11: Fixing up the Barn
Who: The Doctor, Gambit, Ianto, Logan, Jack and still very OTA
What: Making the barn habitable
Where: The Barn
When: 3:30 PM, day 11
Rating: PG-13, depending?

Status: Complete

Returning to the barn had seemed like the right thing for the Doctor to do following his chat with Jack. It had leveled him a bit and made the Doctor focused back upon what was important - and for now it was caring for the people he was here with - not running off on mission impossible hoping that he might be able to make things go his way.

The crackled road wound around and revealed the structure with it's leaning roof, dislocated hay loft, and singular wall that was leaning of it's own accord. Somehow, The pair of them had found the one spot within it that had allowed them to climb out of the tunnal the day before. There wasn't a ton of space in there; but, there was potential. There were the couches, and a sturdy enough tin roof. There were remnants of the walls from before and a floor that seemed relatively intact. The Doctor knew that with some help he could make something of this place.

Crossing off the road onto the gravel path that lead up to what had formerly been the entry to the barn he ducked inside and in an act of finality, he pushed a couch right over top of the trap door. If this place was going to be their shelter, it wouldn't do to have someone barging in on them at nightfall. Or at any fall for that matter.

"We all live in a yellow subarine, yellow submarine, yellow submarine," the Doctor sang away as he pushed the couches around the barn turned lean-to. Walking up he pushed on the remaining wall. It shuddered a little, but it seemed stable enough. All he needed was someone to help him reinforce the tin roof. Wouildn't do having it blown off onto the barn below at the slightest hint of wind.

It took Logan a bit to find a tree that was a) big and straight enough to be of use and b) far enough away from the barn that felling it wouldn't knock what bits of the barn were still standing down with the impact of it hitting the ground.

That accomplished, he cut down and cut into useable pieces a fair-sized tree.

It helped with the temper. A bit.

He came back into view at the tail end of Gambit's little speech, a quartet of what would have passed for 2x4's if it weren't for the bark still along one edge over his shoulder, the ends trailing in the dirt behind him. Each post was about ten or fifteen feet long.

"Got about a half dozen more of these." He said, setting them down.

While he may have been working, Jack kept a close eye on the Doctor -- ready to toss himself in front of the Time Lord if absolutely necessary. Jack knew there was something in the Doctor's expression that said they were only one bad tequilla bottle away from a very pissed off Doctor. And that, frankly, was something Jack had no intention of seeing. So if he had to take some heat for a while, so be it.

It wasn't that Jack didn't know what to do -- it was that he wasn't sure how to say it without it coming out like barking orders and look how well that had gone over the last time. Brilliantly, indeed.

"All well and good, but if one wall isn't secured --" Jack broke off and actually smiled when Logan approached. "Fantastic. Those'll work perfectly to brace the first wall. Once that's braced, then we can go about following the rest of Gambit's plan. If the wall that's about to collapse isn't at all secured, the moment there's weight against it, the whole thing will collapse like a deck of cards. Secure the wall with a couple of the new boards, lift the other as smarty-trousers suggested and support it. Then figure out how to rebuild the other two walls."

Frowning, Jack bent and started looking through the rubble for anything along the lines of a metal pipe for use of hammering. Grinning, he came up with one long piece and two more shorter ones. "These'll have to do by way of a hammer for now, unless anyone spies something in the rubble." Jack flicked his glance over at Remy. "Or unless the packrat's holding out on us where those are concerned."

While there was bracing going on, Ianto couldn't help, much as he wanted to, much as it distracted him. He fished nails out of his sling, though, to pass on to people as they needed them and sort of glared at Jack. This wasn't his fault, but Ianto needed someone to glare at. Being useless like this grated at him like nothing else in the world.
