Day 11: 12:00AM
Who: The Doctor and Gambit
When: Midnnight, day 11
Where: The Tunnels beneath Vas
What: Exploring
Rating: PG~
Status: complete

The Doctor had listened intently as Gambit tried to explain the nature of what his power felt like. The Doctor could, actually, envision the warmth that Gambit described, a transference of energy - he knew that feeling well enough. Though, for him it was usually quite uncomfortable, something he wanted to get out and away with as quickly as possible. The Doctor started considering how Remy metabolized energy, how and where he stored it. It was like a puzzle for the Doctor, really and he liked knowing how things worked.

When Remy said something about being a god among insects the Doctor carefully maintained his poker face. For a moment he couldn't quite figure out what to think of that. Though, being the sort to judge based on character and actions rather than poorly chosen phrases, the Doctor took it to mean that the Cajun had an understanding of the scope and power of his abilities, and not that he actually intended to take over the world with them.

More toe wiggling, it was making the Doctor feel as if maybe his back was loosening. Just a smidge. Yes, it was loosening a smidge. The Doctor stretched, arms aiming toward the ceiling. His back was feeling better already. Less movement, less strain, no carrying people or chunks of concrete, it was easy to see how the rest had been good for his back.

"When you get back home, what are you going to do?"

Gambit emerged from the hole and shut the door behind him leaving it seamlessly concealed among the wooden slats. No wonder no one had noticed. He supposed they were lucky to have not had a couch placed on top of it, though.

"Heaven?" The Doctor had never bothered to give much thought to heaven or hell given the nature of his species and the fact he was a scientist. The concept intrigued him; but, in practical terms he didn't quite understand the application. Seeing the birth and destruction of galaxies didn't tend to do much for the religious aspects of a person's development. Energy he understood, cause and effect; but, a benevolent force controlling the universe? Not so much.

The Doctor took up a seat of his own on a nearby couch. Before he knew it he was leaning back into the musty cushions. He felt so much more comfortable than on the floor in the tunnel. "You seem nearly as alone as I am," he said off handedly, looking up at the barn's rafters. He had a hard time understanding how a human might live that way. Their lives were too short.

"Ain' not'in' wron' wit' bein' alone, mon ami." The Cajun reminded him easily, turning his head to look over at him, red eyes locking onto the dimly lit form of the lounging Doctor. For some reason, this immediately reminded him of a shrink's office, with both of them on couches. And it caused a grin to spread across his face... but soon, it was back to the conversation at hand.

"No one to worry 'bou'. No one t'be use' agains' you. No pain. No sufferin'. You jus' gotta look out for yourself. Jus' one mout' to feed, when you go to bed hungry, you don' feel bad you coul'n' feed your frien', you jus' feel hungry." He breathed in deeply through his nose before releasing it through his mouth. "Ain' got no one to miss, when 'dey die. Ain' got no one to worry 'bou' missin' you, when you die." Everyone died, some time. Even great Time Lords.. or so Gambit assumed. Even Logan, one day, would die. Nothing could live forever. Forever, some day, would come to an end.

Everything died. "We gon' sleep here tonigh'?" Gambit was fine with that. In fact, he was hoping for it. And even if the Doctor decided he wanted to go back, maybe the Cajun would stay anyway. This couch beat a floor any day.

"Your lives are too short to spend alone," he cast off quickly. It was his opinion and he was right to have it. He'd seen human lives go by in a blink and the ebb of time wear away people until all that was left was dust, and sometimes not even that. It was the problem of being a Time Lord - time was relative for you; but the only constant for everyone else.

It saddened the Doctor for Gambit as his ramblig continued. He imained that for the Cajun it made sense - he did seem fiercely independent, thought, the Doctor wondered what had made him that way. His back to couch cushions, the Doctor turned his gaze to fix on the red eyed man, trying to scatch him in the low light that eminated from him. The Doctor would have shaken his head, but he was too tired. He couldn't see someone as full of life as Gambit running though his life avoiding attachments. Sooner or later it had to happen with someone or something. The Doctor knew you couldn't avoid companions forever - eventually they just managed to choose you. Hell, look at Donna.

"I'm going to sleep here," he said with a yawn, snuggling down into the rancid smelling foam. He could smell the scent of old rain and dirt and age; yet, ti didn't make the cushion any less comfortable.

"Something tells me a cushion would be good for my back."

"Oui." He agreed quietly, to the Doctor's statement that their lives were too short for that. But he'd leave it with that and say nothing more. Instead, he shifted on the couch and slowly removed his hand from the cushion after drawing the light out of it.

"You a wise lea'er, mon ami." It was definitely a good idea to sleep here. The sun would wake them in the morning and the Cajun wasn't concerned about it. If he slept until noon, he wouldn't miss the morning.

"Nigh', Docteur." The smooth voice of the Cajun came through the dark, before he went quiet once again. This was a good spot to rest.
