The sun was shining high in the sky and a gentle breeze stroked the leaves of the trees, making them, along with the severed stub of rope on the clock face from the day previous sway lazily. It was quiet. Perhaps it was too quiet, for the lack of birds chirping or insects buzzing.
All in all, the day was one of the most pleasant as of yet for the bulk of the involuntary residents of Vas Captio, save, of course, the heat. Maybe it was a bit too hot to be entirely comfortable.
It started small, as most things do. The chattering of metal on metal tinkled through the store as hangers rattled on their racks and there was a gentle clatter of knick-knacks scattering just slightly, practically staying in place for the barely-there amount of movement put forth. Then everything stilled and the quiet was restored.
This stillness was to lend false hope. Less than a moment later, the earth began to shake violently, throwing those very same knick-knacks from their shelves and to the floor with clatters and crashes. The windows seemed to implode, the glass shattering inward and shards of it raining almost horizontally into the store before either embedding themselves into walls or shelves or falling to the floor. The ceiling tiles dropped out of their respective places, a few of the thin metal supports fluttering to the floor like gigantic pieces of ticker tape.
Lights broke free of their fixtures, thumping to the floor heavily before the bulbs smashed into tiny pieces. Free standing metal racks of clothes tipped from their positions, falling like dominoes, one on top of the other until the quaking shook them free enough to fall completely and independently to the floor.
Clothing, accessories, and sporting goods are tossed about like a ship on the ocean, falling where they might, piling up or else shattering, cracking, breaking, or rolling lazily around on the floor. And then...it was over.
Vas Captio was still, again, and silent once more.
