Day 10: Thrift Shop - 1:15pm
Who: OTA
What: Seven point five
When: 1:15pm - 5:00pm
Where: Thrift Shop
Rating: TBA
Status: Active

The sun was shining high in the sky and a gentle breeze stroked the leaves of the trees, making them, along with the severed stub of rope on the clock face from the day previous sway lazily. It was quiet. Perhaps it was too quiet, for the lack of birds chirping or insects buzzing.

All in all, the day was one of the most pleasant as of yet for the bulk of the involuntary residents of Vas Captio, save, of course, the heat. Maybe it was a bit too hot to be entirely comfortable.

It started small, as most things do. The chattering of metal on metal tinkled through the store as hangers rattled on their racks and there was a gentle clatter of knick-knacks scattering just slightly, practically staying in place for the barely-there amount of movement put forth. Then everything stilled and the quiet was restored.

This stillness was to lend false hope. Less than a moment later, the earth began to shake violently, throwing those very same knick-knacks from their shelves and to the floor with clatters and crashes. The windows seemed to implode, the glass shattering inward and shards of it raining almost horizontally into the store before either embedding themselves into walls or shelves or falling to the floor. The ceiling tiles dropped out of their respective places, a few of the thin metal supports fluttering to the floor like gigantic pieces of ticker tape.

Lights broke free of their fixtures, thumping to the floor heavily before the bulbs smashed into tiny pieces. Free standing metal racks of clothes tipped from their positions, falling like dominoes, one on top of the other until the quaking shook them free enough to fall completely and independently to the floor.

Clothing, accessories, and sporting goods are tossed about like a ship on the ocean, falling where they might, piling up or else shattering, cracking, breaking, or rolling lazily around on the floor. And then...it was over.

Vas Captio was still, again, and silent once more.

She had woken in the woods, mind fuzzy and sitting on the ground, her back against a strange tree. Hazel eyes blinking in the filtered sunlight, Kaylee dusted herself off as she slowly climbed to her feet, her joints feeling stiff as if she had been sitting where she had for quite awhile. Surprisingly, she was back in the same shirt and overalls that she had arrived in, albeit with that shirt of Logan's neatly folded beside her. For a moment she looked down at the teddy bear patch on the overalls, fingering the little fuzzy thing on the fabric over her thigh.

Looking around for a full minute gained her nothing but a good view of pleasant forest viewing. So, still confused but her chipper self shining through, she set off in order to find some sort of...something.

The question of whether or not she was back in the odd village was answered swiftly as she found herself wandering onto a road, and walking towards the Thrift Store without a question as to why. Mostly she just thought of the fact that she had been looking for River for day before, without realizing that she herself had been gone for nearly 48 hours.

One step inside the store, and the world exploded. Well, that was just the windows, and the lights...and the world. A few sharp spikes of pain along her back and shoulder, and then a clothing rack to her left hit her. Kaylee's world had only been light for a few minutes, when it faded to dark again, as her head clunked against the wooden floor.

River had been in the back room of the thrift store when she saw Kaylee coming. She jumped up and ran around the objects that layed on the ground to make it to the main store. It was then that the shattering of the store occured and she tripped and stumbled back against the door frame. She ignored the sudden pain in her shoulders and quickly stood up trying to find Kaylee. She hadn't seen her for so long between her own disappearance only to come back to find Kaylee missing. She was getting ready to come to terms of being without her best friend until she suddenly heard her nearby and enter the store.

With the lights coming down around her she managed to avoid them and run to Kaylee's body. "Kaylee!" she called, shaking the woman. Crying now River gasped and turned at the sound of glass breaking. She tried to move out of the way only to have a medium sized shard shove itself deep into her clavical. She screamed as she felt the thin bone break and gasped for air. The pain was unberable and River had lost all movement in her right arm.

The light fixtures were still coming down and River became worried for her friend laying limp next to her. Using her left hand she grabbed Kaylee's left arm and began to drag the woman towards the door.

Once again, Kaylee came awake slowly. Only this time, the growing consciousness was accompanied by sharp pain.

Even with her eyes wide open, she did not see anything for an impossibly long moment, before her vision grayed back into clarity. Uncomprehending of why exactly River's tear streaked face was directly above hers, but still far away, the pieces fell into place at a slower rate than they normally would. Sluggishly slow. While she had never experienced the sensation herself, she had hovered while Mal had been told by Simon the different symptoms of a concussion. And absorbed enough to realize that might be what it was.

Seeing stars had always seemed to be a bit fanciful, until glittering lights flickered in front of her eyes for a moment.

"R-river?" Her back and shoulder were both burning as sensations returned, and those shards of glass from the store front window made themselves known.

River let go of Kaylee the second Kaylee's voice entered her head again. She bent over to give her a half hug with her left arm, "Kaylee!" she called suddenly incredibly happy with a new rush of tears coming over her. The sudden pain where arm had met formally met her clavical bone rushed through her suddenly and she winced and had to move back again.

The crashing noises of the building coming down around them pulled her attention back to reality. She took her hand again and tried to get her to stand back up. "Must go now!" she said. They didn't have much time before the building would be on top of them. River began to make her way towards the front of the building when she was suddenly pushed back by the sudden rush of voices screaming for help or of surprise caught her by surprise. She landed hard against the wood floor of the store and winced at the sudden pain in her head.

A wince there, when Kaylee was dropped back to the ground, even that short distance. As the glass pieces cut and slid deeper into her skin, each inch long piece going in nearly to the hilt. Until they were partially camouflaged by the ripped and bloodied fabric of her shirt that fluttered over the wounds. Still, even with a muddled brainpan, she knew that this was a crisis situation, and Cap'n had told her enough that when the world was a burnin' 'round you, you kept moving.

"You run," she murmured aloud, not realizing she was doing so. "When you can't run anymore, you crawl...and when you can't do that--"

Accepting the hug with more confusion than anything else, which appeared to be the theme of the day so far, Kaylee patted her friend's back. As if they were not both attacked by store windows and shopping equipment. "Ni Hao," she greeted the younger girl. Before she nodded and, wincing and struggling more than a little, the mechanic rose to her feet and followed River towards the door.

With a burst of movement, adrenaline beginning to flow in order to keep her moving, she grabbed River after she fell. Thankfully the older of the two was far stronger than she looked, at least by human standards, after being involved with machines and mechanics for so long, and she was easily able to shoulder her younger friend's slight weight. One arm wrapped around the darker haired girl's waist, she tugged and more than half carried her towards the door.

Had to get out, they had to get out.

River nodded at Kaylee when she said the familiar words. Thinking about Mal brought a new round of questions she wanted to ask Kaylee but she knew that there would be another time for that. She awkwardly smiled at her greeting and moved out of the way for her to stand.

When she had been hit by the sudden rush of screaming voices and hit the floor tears formed at an impulse from the pain. River moved with Kaylee and leaned on her friend, hanging onto her with her left arm and tried to rest her right as she moved out the door.

Timing seemed to be everything for them since only a matter of a few minutes after walking out of the building the cieling finally completely gave way. So much for their make-shift home. River let go of Kaylee and allowed herself to fall to the ground. She looked first at the mess that had once been the thrift store and then back down at the large piece of glass sticking out of her body in the place that half her calvical should have been. Thinking of Kaylee's injuries she looked back up at her friend standing next to her, "Are you ok?"

What a fucking day. Earthquakes ... Logan snarled under his breath as he headed for the next place with people in need of help.

Only to do a 180 when an errant bit of breeze brought a familiar scent to him.

"Kaylee? The hell?" He turned and headed for the thrift store, finally spotting not one, but two women in front of the collapsed thrift store ... one of the two very familiar.

"Fuck. Kaylee." Then he got a good look at the woman with her. Big honking piece of glass ... yeah. Not good. Logan wasn't about to yank it out, either. Not here. Not knowing what all the thing'd cut into. "C'mon. I'll get the pair of you to the gym. That's where everyone's gathering. There're some doctors there, too. They can get that shit out."

River more or less slumped out of Kaylee's arms, and her numbish fingers let her slip away. She herself sat down on the ground next to the young girl, but it was more a graceful collapse rather than sitting nearly. Her knees bent beneath her and off to the side of her body, Kaylee planted her palms flat on the ground in front of her.

"I..uh," struggling through the fog in her head just then to answer River's question, she lifted a hand to her temple, where the pain was sharp rather than a dull throb. When she pulled her fingers away, blood was smeared on the tips of her fingers, and even through her haze she remembered that head wounds did bleed an awful lot. So some blood in her hair and at her temple should not be awful worrying.

Internally Kaylee wondered if her calm was part of the head injury.

Hearing a familiar voice, she looked up and over to see Logan striding up. "Hi Logan," the mechanic greeted a bit distantly. Aware of the fact that both she and River had their very own glass spikes, River's a good deal bigger and more obvious than the half dozen or so stuck into her back. "Oh, okay." Doctors would be nice, yes. Carefully, she levered herself up to stand again, her legs a bit shaky beneath her.
