Day 10: Museum - 1:15pm
Who: OTA
What: Seven point five
When: 1:15pm - 5:00pm
Where: the Museum
Rating: TBA
Status: Active

The sun was shining high in the sky and a gentle breeze stroked the leaves of the trees, making them, along with the severed stub of rope on the clock face from the day previous sway lazily. It was quiet. Perhaps it was too quiet, for the lack of birds chirping or insects buzzing.

All in all, the day was one of the most pleasant as of yet for the bulk of the involuntary residents of Vas Captio, save, of course, the heat. Maybe it was a bit too hot to be entirely comfortable.

It started small, as most things do. A few of the sculptures rattled against the glass displays encasing them and the loose windows in some of the rooms jittered anxiously in their frames. The floor seemed to wiggle gently but then, all was quiet and immobile again.

As if to protest the stillness of the museum, a great angry shudder rumbled through the foundation. Some of the wooden floorboards seemed to shoot upward as they snapped in half or into pieces, jutting up from the floor. The whole building dropped down as its weak foundation crumbled beneath it, creating the sensation of a very short elevator drop. Glass shattered loudly, throwing about shards sharp as knives and raining them down into the floors or walls as if tossed by a knife-thrower. The doors of the multiple rooms flew open, some ripping off their hinges entirely and others being slammed angrily shut again when large display cases made of wood and metal were thrown against them.

The sound of shattering glass echoed through the place as displays were destroyed completely sending still more shards of what remained everywhere, creating somewhat of a death trap, especially in the main lobby where the bulk of the displays remained. That sound was skewed until it was nearly drowned out completely as the roar of metal supports trying to hold and failing came to fruition and the entire building's worth of ceiling space collapsed in. Some of the doorways managed to hold up - those in which the doors were jammed in place by felled display cases - while others caved in under the weight of the falling debris and the loss of structure when the museum dropped from its foundation to the ground a few feet below. Almost as quickly as everything began, the movement dropped away.

Vas Captio was still, again, and silent once more.

Jenny was dozing sleepily on the edge of dreams. She hadn't bothered to get up at all this morning except to reach up onto the table and get a soda. Her throat had been so dry and she was so thirsty. It had been a long, fun night and she couldn't remember a whole lot of it. Which was fine with her. She didn't need to remember all the foolish things she was sure she'd done. Especially not with the pounding headache she had right now.

Wincing as the room shook slightly, Jenny sat up and looked around. Someone must be moving one of those huge sculptures or tables in the next room. Why the fuck they needed to do that, she wasn't sure but it annoyed the hell out of her. Of course, there was not a thought in her mind that she was really in someone else's house. She was the visitor sleeping late into the afternoon in one of their rooms which was probably a place people could have been if she wasn't. No, all she cared about was them being the fuck quiet.

Reaching out to pummel her fist on the wall, she never made it. The room around her jolted violently upward and suddenly dropped out below her with a sickening elevator dropping sensation. Covering her mouth, Jenny's stomach threatened to heave. She tried to stand on shaky legs but the floor continued to roll and gyrate, sending her crashing backward with a thud as her head connected with the wall. Dazed, Jenny slid down. Her eyes, crossed, took in the chaos around her as things rolled off the table onto her, crashing into her with terrible force and sending pain up every nerve ending.

Then, with a sudden realization, Jenny saw one of the large display units rocking on its supports. She opened her mouth and screamed as loud as she was able, putting her hands up in a futile effort to protect herself as not just the display but part of the wall and ceiling swung down on top of her. Her scream was cut off as everything came to settle and the silence returned.

Ripley had gone exploring once she, Shannon, and Sarah had finished chatting, curious about the contents of the museum.

She had just enough time to notice Jenny curled up under one of the tables before all hell broke loose.

Earthquakes were yet another earth-bound phenomenon Ripley had never experienced, nor had any idea how to react to. But luck, or her intense drive to survive, was with her, because her first instinct ... normally the worst one ... was to dart into the middle of the room, /away/ from all the display cases and heavy things, when the entire room started to shake.

She got flung to her knees, and instinctively curled into a ball, hiding her face against her knees, as glass flew everywhere. And then, as fast as it started, it was over. Ripley peered up cautiously.

"Holy shit." She gave her head a shake, then took stock. Felt like her back was a pincushion, but other than that ... wait. Nasty gash on her shin, too. How the hell had that got there? Ripley wasn't sure and didn't, in the end, really care. She sighed, then grabbed the second shirt she'd gotten from the thrift store and ripped it, wrapping it around her leg to stem the bleeding, then looked around.

And realized there was a hunk of WALL where the other woman had been. Oh /HELL/.

Ripley surged to her feet and started looking for something to start shifting the crap off of the woman, and, for whatever it was worth, /yelled/ at the top of her lungs.

"HELP! GOT SOMEONE CRUSHED UNDER A HUNK OF WALL HERE!!!!!"

Sarah had been on her way back to the main lobby of the museum, intending to slip out to the gas station and see if there was anything that passed for proper food, when the building shook and she felt the floor drop from underneath her. The movement of the building sent her tumbling to the ground. She fell hard, banging her hip on the ground, and barely had time to scream as the displays shattered in the corridor and pieces of art began crashing down around her.

Keeping to the floor, Sarah scrambled toward the closest door frame, hoping to at least to keep herself from catching the worst of the debris. She felt glass shards cut into her hands as she moved, and felt them dig into her shins. Loud creaks above her caused Sarah to pause just for a moment and glance up. She let loose another full-on scream as the ceiling fell down toward her. All she could do was fling herself toward the door frame, cover her neck with her hands, and pray that the luck she'd had traveling with the Doctor years before would hold now.

The door frame managed to protect her from the worst of the debris. Somehow, she'd gotten lucky in that respect. As the dust settled, she risked a glance around. The building was in complete shambles. Bracing herself against the door frame, Sarah hauled herself to her feet. She felt a pain in her left hip and leg and winced. Glancing down, she saw a stain beginning to form in her jeans. She must have cut herself. She stripped off her leather jacket and was about to try and wrap her leg with it, when she heard someone shouting.

"Hang on!" she called, turning toward the voice. "I'm coming!" She made her way toward the sound, tripping over bits of roof, art, shelves. "Not sure how much good I'll be, but..." she muttered. She could feel the glass digging into her palms. She saw Ripley not too far ahead of her as she rounded a corner and quickened her pace. "Where?" was all she asked.

Ripley'd managed to find a hunk of something that looked vaguely sturdy enough to lever the stuff off the woman when Sarah called out, and, a few moments later, came in the room.

"Under there." Ripley said, pointing to the mass of wall, display case, and who knew what else in front of her. "We have to get her out, fast." If it wasn't already too late.

Sarah Jane's eyes widened as she took in the amount of debris. Rather than worry about her own injuries, she pulled her jacket back on, hopefully to keep her torso from getting injured as she tried to shift some of the wall and other debris out of the way. She glanced around and spotted a piece of flooring that had come uprooted. With a grimace, she prised it the rest of the way free, feeling splinters dig into her already cut palms. There'd be time to deal with that later.

"We've got to be careful," she said as she made her way over to where the largest pile of rubble peaked. "If we move something the wrong way, we could crush her." Ripley had said her. Never mind the fact that the woman could be crushed already underneath all of this.

"Hello?" she called, carefully wiggling the board underneath part of the debris. "Are you conscious? Can you reply?"

Jenny moaned softly as her eyes fluttered open. She immediately sneezed from the dust settling all around her. It was dark. So dark and she couldn't - no wait, there was a shaft of light. Up through rubble. She vaguely remembered all hell breaking loose and something massive falling on her. Then she must've been knocked unconscious against the wall.

Trying to move, Jenny nearly screamed out in pain. Her legs were pinned underneath something that would not move when she pushed against it. She whimpered and tried to wipe away the tears streaming down her cheeks from all the dust. Then she did scream. Glass. There were at least three large shards of glass embedded into the skin of her face. One had narrowly missed her left eye and the others were in the meat of her cheeks. Blood came away with her fingers and she screamed again.

"Get me out of here! Somebody help me! Somebody!" Was that someone's voice? Jenny shifted painfully with legs pinned and pounded on the display laying across her. "Help me! Help me! Help me!!!!" she cried hysterically.

Ripley grimaced. "I know, trust me, I know." She told Sarah, looking worried.

Then whoever it was started yelling. Well, at least they were alive enough TO yell, which was good.

"Calm down!" Ripley called. "We're here, and working on getting you out, ok? Just stay calm, and whatever you do ... DON'T MOVE." No knowing how badly she was injured, and moving would inevitably make matters worse.

She worked her own chunk of lever under the pile, then nodded to Sarah. "On three." She said. "One ... Two ... THREE." And then she heaved, trying to get the main mass of crap off the poor gal.

Hearing the scream kicked Jack into high gear. Ianto was good enough to be able to move and the two men carefully picked their way through the debris and rubble. He knew Ianto would be right behind him, though the last thing they needed was for anything to fall and pin them. Jack didn't fancy hearing Gray's voice again anytime soon. It was slow going but soon could hear voices in addition to the one screaming for help.

Jack skidded to a stop, eyes flicking to Sarah Jane. She at least was standing -- as was the other girl he didn't recognise. Now, closer, he could see it was Jenny beneath the pile of rubble which meant that Shannon was still somewhere. "We're coming," he said, moving to help shift the rubble. They'd use levers, Jack would rely on brute strength.

Arm out of commission or no, Ianto was intent on helping, even if he was swaying a little on his feet. He moved over to shift some of the smaller pieces out of the way. "I know this is really trite," he called, "but try and stay calm. We're digging you out." Sarcasm even at a moment like this. Well, it could have been worse, he supposed.

Sarah's heart jumped as the woman below the rubble began screaming. She took a deep breath, making sure her bit of floorboard was wedged as best she could. Got to keep calm. Ripley was telling the woman to keep calm. Hopefully, the woman would listen. She nodded as Ripley said on three, and heaved as best she could at three. She felt the glass dig into her palms and grimaced, but forced herself to keep pushing. As bad as the pain was, the girl beneath the rubble was hurting far worse. "Let us know if anything we're doing hurts you, all right?" she called.

Hearing Jack's voice, Sarah spared a glance back toward what had been the doorway. He and Ianto - Sarah remembered his face from the subwave network - were making their way over. Jack seemed all right, but Ianto looked a little worse for wear. "All right there, Torchwood?" she asked them, managing a weary smile. Then, she turned her attention back to the task at hand. The levers had managed to shift some of the debris away from where Sarah thought the woman was trapped. She pulled her bit of floor free and began working it under another piece of the fallen wall.

Keep calm? Where they joking? Jenny might be buried under rubble with glass in her face but her brain worked. There was no possible way she could be calm right now! She had glass in her face and her legs were probably paralyzed now. She was never going to walk again. Never going to be able to do anything normal ever again.

She had worked herself up into a tizzy. Frantically she looked around for some way to claw herself out of the debris. Scraping at the display until her nails cracked painfully. Screaming for someone to help her. Why hadn't shye just killed herself when she'd had the chance? It would have been so much better than this!

No part of her mind thought about the fact there were people out there trying to dig her out. She was alone, lost in her own little world down here now. "Get me out. Ohh get me out! Help!" And a whole string of obscenities streamed from her frantic mouth in a high pitched squeal as adrenaline pumped into her system, making the pain seem minimal.

Ripley nodded to the two guys who walked in, relieved to see them. There was a /lot/ of crap to get off the girl under the rubble.

Didn't stop her from giving Jack a wall-eyed, suspicious look for his blase' ease where chucking stuff off was concerned. The only thing that kept her from poking him to be sure of his humanity was the quite-red blood he was sporting.

She was so distracted by trying to free the other woman, and the screaming fit the other woman was having, it didn't even really register that Jack ... wasn't all that hurt, considering. Just as well.

"CALM DOWN." She barked, louder this time. "We're moving as fast as we can. Panicking and thrashing around will only make your injuries worse!"

"Yes, calm down," Jack snapped. "We move too fast, we'll crush you. So we either do it this way, and take the time to get you out safely, or we rush and let things shift and who knows what will happen. Your choice."

Jack was quick loosing his patient. He knew Jenny had to be scared, but yelling and screaming wasn't going to help them get her out any faster. Grunting under the weight of a large piece of stone, Jack slid it to the side then launched it out of the way as best as he could, wincing at the sound it made upon hitting the floor.

"Almost there." Jack nodded at the other large piece. "If we shift that, we should be able to create enough space to pull her out. Can you three move it enough so I can pull her out?"

"Sarah Jane Smith," Ianto replied, recognition dawning on his face. Now wasn't the time for hellos, though, and he dashed a bit to wedge his shoulder against the bit Jack had pointed at. Really, he wasn't much good at the moment, but having himself braced against a solid piece helped with the wooziness that threatened. Being needed helped with that respect, too. It was easy to fight it off with duty looming.

"Alright then, ladies?"

Sarah nodded to Jack and shifted so her floor board was under the bit of rubble that Jack had indicated. She glanced at Ianto and offered him a quick smile. "Ianto Jones," she said, nodding to him. She glanced over at Ripley. "Ready whenever you are."

She glanced down at the woman trapped in the rubble. "Almost there," she said. "Please, just hold still a moment longer, and we'll have you out."

Ripley looked like she was half-tempted to tell Jack to shove it, but ... whatever the hell the guy's deal was, he was definitely being sensible.

She'd figure out what his deal was later.

"Right. It's a plan." She said, then nodded to Sarah. "On three again. One. Two. *Three*." And on three, she heaved against the lever she'd jammed under the rubble, body braced against the weight.

The sooner they got the gal out from under, the better. Of course, then they'd have to deal with her screaming and flailing around, but at least she wouldn't be doing it while under a bunch of debris.

Jack was completely oblivious to any and all looks that Ripley was giving him. He had gone into "hero-mode" and once there, it would be hellish to get him to pull back. He was doing what he did best: taking care of people and playing saviour. He'd rescued enough people to know this was what needed to be done, no questions asked.

He felt the rubble shift and, as bent down, grabbing Jenny as gently as he could under the armpits and pulling back to free her from the rubble. Jack grunted softly, the angle awkward as hell, yet managed to pull her just free of the rubble. "Drop it! She's clear!" Jack shouted by way of instruction. Flashing a grin down at Jenny, he remained crouched by her head. "Your safe, but don't you dare move, got it? We don't know how bad you've been hurt."

Jenny had fallen silent after Jack's admonishment. Hearing his voice suddenly made everything seem a little less frightening. Her heart slowly made its way out of her throat and she forced herself to take long, deep breaths to calm herself even more. She was going to be as still as possible so that they could get her out.

All at once the pressure against her legs was relieved and she gasped out in pain as blood began rushing into the area again. As he leaned toward her, she clung with her arms around Jack's neck, careful not to cut him with the glass still lodged into her face. "Thank you, Jack. Oh thank you." She nodded and did not move at all except to wiggle her toes. It hurt like a bitch but she wanted to be sure she could do it. She hoped she was actually doing it but she couldn't see so she couldn't tell.

Once Jenny was free, Ianto rolled away from the rubble so that the other ladies could lower it to the ground again. Then, he lowered himself to the ground rather close to the would be patient to look over her quickly. "We need to get out of here before the rest of this place comes tumbling down. Anyone see anything they want to take?" He could stash it in his sling, he reasoned. "Miss, do you think you can walk? At least out into the open?"

Sarah was glad she wasn't levering the debris by herself. This last piece was heavier than she'd expected, and she wouldn't have been able to shift it without Ripley's or Ianto's help. She felt her muscles strain, but didn't let up on her efforts until Jack had pulled the girl free. As soon as Ianto had let go, Sarah glanced at Ripley and lowered the piece down. Letting go of it all at once might end up damaging the building further.

She sagged a bit where she stood, using the bit of floor as a cane, and took a few deep breaths. When Ianto spoke, she nodded, agreeing with his assessment. "Is there anything here we need to bring for you?" she asked, looking down at the girl. She made sure she still had her journal in the pocket of her jacket as she spoke. After something like this, the easiest way to get hold of people would probably be the journals.

At least Jenny had listened to him. That was the most important part. He watched her carefully, waiting until she had pulled herself together enough to start looking her over. He let Sarah and Ianto take control of the situation in that regard, ignoring the unknown woman for the time being. Jack took charge and that's simply how he rolled.

He reached into a pocket as best as he could, withdrawing a handkerchief and carefully blotting some of the blood from Jenny's face. He didn't want to move the glass for fear of injuring her further. "We need to get you to the gym where the doctors are." He looked at her, frowning further. "I can carry you but I don't know if that's better on you to be held or to walk. Can you feel your feet?"

"We really should carry her on something flat." Ripley said as she let the rubble back down. "I don't know about the three of you, but I'm no doctor to be accurately figuring out what all's gotten hurt, and she /did/ have half a wall land on her. Better safe than sorry."

People could do crazy thing in an emergency, despite being badly injured, only to collapse later, Ripley knew. Hell, Hicks had somehow managed to keep going until they got to the drop ship despite taking acid to the chest and face. In this case, it just wasn't worth risking having the gal try to walk, when none of them knew for sure what all had been damaged when the wall fell on her.

"I can wiggle my toes but I don't know if I can walk. I guess I can try," she said truthfully in a tremulous voice.

Jenny looked up at Jack and the other unfamiliar faces around her. It was overwhelming and she wanted to just close her eyes. Instead she looked back at the rubble behind her, grateful that the table had taken the majority of the crashing debris from her. If she hadn't been sitting beside it, she would have probably been dead. Not a great thought. Tears sprang into her eyes again and she sniffed hard to keep them from falling.

Jenny focused on the older woman as she asked about her needing anything. "I don't know," she said with wide, moist eyes.

She nodded to Jack's question. She could feel her feet even if her legs felt like they'd been compressed into pancakes. She didn't even want to look down and see the damage.

Oh, bollocks. The unknown lady was right. Well. The unknown lady who didn't have a wall fall on her. Ianto bit at his lip and looked around at the wreckage, trying to see if there was anything they could use. "Think there's a table or something around here, ma'am? You're right, we need to keep her still and flat." But what with one thing and another, Ianto sort of forgot his first aid training.

Silly boy.

Carrying it was going to be a bitch, too, that table. Or wide planks. Anything. Gingerly, he began to poke through the mess, mindful of where it all was and how it lay, to keep it from shifting any.

"Is there any rope left from the hanging tapestries? We could tie some of the floorboards together if we need to, or rig up a harness so we can pull her along the ground on a board once we get out to the street," Sarah Jane suggested. She glanced around, hoping to see something that would make do. She didn't know how everyone else was feeling, but she wasn't sure she could carry anyone right now. Jack would probably be able to, but one person wasn't enough to carry her.

"Steady on," she said to Jenny, smiling kindly at her. "It'll be all right in the end. She reached out to brush a stray bit of hair back from the girl's face, careful not to get anywhere near the glass in her cheeks. "Do you have any personal effects here? Any medicines?" Not that they'd be easy to find in all the rubble, but if there were something she needed, they at least needed to know to come back later and dig through all the debris.
