Entry tags:!complete, day 10, ellen ripley, location: museum, sarah jane smith, shannon rutherford

Day 10: Late Morning
Who: Sarah Jane Smith, Shannon Rutherford, Ellen Ripley
What: random encounter and meeting in person
Where: in the lobby of the museum
When: Day 10, late morning (11-ish?)
Rating: PG (?)
Status: Complete

Having spent the day before wandering around the town, Sarah decided to take some time to explore her new "home." She hesitated to think of it as a home, except that the Doctor was bunking here, and being around the Doctor made her feel like she was home, in a way. Familiarity in strange surroundings. And the surroundings were certainly strange. It wasn't the worst prison Sarah had ever found herself in, but it wasn't good by any stretch of the imagination. Still, it could always be worse. At least she wasn't being poisoned by radiation, that she knew of.

The museum was a beautiful old building, even in its current condition. Sarah could see glimpses of what it had been in its prime. Some of the artwork still retained its former beauty, even mold-covered and tattered as it was. It had a sad charm about it Sarah found fascinating. It also served to make her appreciate her own home all the more. As soon as she got out of here, she was going to make sure all of her assets were well taken care of and properly enumerated in her will for Luke.

Luke. It had been two days since she'd last seen her son. She had no doubt that he could take care of himself, but she still worried about him. He would be worried about her, no doubt, probably more than she was about him. Hopefully, the Jacksons would look after him until she could help the Doctor get everyone out of this horrible place. She blinked, feeling the beginnings of tears in her eyes, and hurriedly lifted a hand to wipe them away. Giving in to sadness like that wouldn't help her think, wouldn't do her any good. There would be time enough for tears when they all escaped.

"Oh, hello," she said, looking up. She caught sight of a young woman across the lobby. "I'm afraid you startled me." She wiped at her eyes again and offered the woman a smile.

Sarah Jane beat Shannon to the punch once more, because it took her a moment to recall what exactly the British kid, Sid, had said 'petrol' meant. Gasoline, right. The gas station. "Bob's a cool guy, yeah," Shannon agreed with a small smile. "If he's half as funny as Jay, I might be tempted to take Jay up on the half-assed offer for me to head home with them when the Doctor gets us out of this hell hole," she added.

It wasn't entirely true, of course, because she'd far rather go traveling with the Doctor, but she wasn't going to say that in front of Ripley. Sarah Jane, maybe later, but she wasn't sure that the Doctor wanted the whole of the community knowing he could apparently travel through time and space in some contraption called a TARDIS. TARDIS...? Yeah, TARDIS. That was what Jack had said. 'Time and Relative Dimensions in Space,' if she remembered right.

She said nothing as Ripley explained hypersleep and Sarah Jane seemed to latch right onto the meaning, at least from what Shannon could tell, almost as if she knew exactly what it was. Which, of course, made Shannon wonder absently where in time or space the Doctor had found her. She simply listened to the conversation quietly, eyes flitting back and forth from one woman to the other.

When Ripley wondered aloud why exactly the place might've been designed to look the way it did, Shannon waited, looking back at Sarah Jane, in hopes of an intelligent response that Shannon herself couldn't seem to muster. When Sarah said it, Shannon nodded, pulling a face, half-impressed, and half-thoughtful. "Yeah, well, if that's the plan, then mission fucking accomplished," she muttered more to herself than to either of the other women.

To Ripley, she asked, "have you found yourself a buddy? We all sort of buddy up here. Watch each other's backs. You kind of...have to," she said, again with an air of apology in her voice.

"Oh!" Ripley felt a little silly. Gasoline. D'oh. The crude version thereof that they'd been sent to harvest in the Nostromo. Crude oil and all its forms tended to make the world go 'round, at least where she came from. "Right. Sorry. Just never heard it called that before."

She nodded. "Yeah. We have spaceflight ... rather extensive, actually, but the ships are relatively slow. It was either find a way to keep the crews in stasis for most of the trip, or make the ships multi-generational. And I'm from 2179." Then, with a grimace. "I was born in 2092, though. Long story." Since she clearly is not 87 years old, there has to be a story there /somewhere/.

"Makes a certain degree of sense." She agrees with Sarah, then shakes her head. "No, I haven't, Shannon. Was just doing a quick run-around of the town, see if I spotted somewhere I'd like to stay other than the barn. Way too far out for my tastes." And as independent as she tended to be, she could definitely see the benefits of a buddy system. Sometimes, a partner was all that stood between you and not making it out alive.

Sarah Jane smiled almost apologetically. "It's the British term." She glanced at the two women. "Both from the States?" she asked.

She listened to Ripley's description of space travel, and made a note of the year the woman claimed to be from. She hadn't been to 2179 herself, but the description didn't sound implausible. She raised an eyebrow as she did the math on Ripley's dates. When the other woman didn't elaborate, Sarah decided it was probably personal, and perhaps not something the other woman wanted to share with two relative strangers. If she had to guess, it had something to do with the hypersleep chambers.

"I should probably find one as well," Sarah said when Shannon asked about a buddy. Of course, her first thought was the Doctor. But perhaps that wouldn't be the best option. He would work better if he could move about when and where he needed to, without worrying about someone always tagging along. Even if that someone was an old friend. Sarah glanced at Shannon. "I'm sure there's enough room here, if you find this place to your liking. It's massive." She didn't want to overstep her bounds on the offer, but it seemed like the proper thing to do.
