Day 10: Late Morning
Who: Sarah Jane Smith, Shannon Rutherford, Ellen Ripley
What: random encounter and meeting in person
Where: in the lobby of the museum
When: Day 10, late morning (11-ish?)
Rating: PG (?)
Status: Complete

Having spent the day before wandering around the town, Sarah decided to take some time to explore her new "home." She hesitated to think of it as a home, except that the Doctor was bunking here, and being around the Doctor made her feel like she was home, in a way. Familiarity in strange surroundings. And the surroundings were certainly strange. It wasn't the worst prison Sarah had ever found herself in, but it wasn't good by any stretch of the imagination. Still, it could always be worse. At least she wasn't being poisoned by radiation, that she knew of.

The museum was a beautiful old building, even in its current condition. Sarah could see glimpses of what it had been in its prime. Some of the artwork still retained its former beauty, even mold-covered and tattered as it was. It had a sad charm about it Sarah found fascinating. It also served to make her appreciate her own home all the more. As soon as she got out of here, she was going to make sure all of her assets were well taken care of and properly enumerated in her will for Luke.

Luke. It had been two days since she'd last seen her son. She had no doubt that he could take care of himself, but she still worried about him. He would be worried about her, no doubt, probably more than she was about him. Hopefully, the Jacksons would look after him until she could help the Doctor get everyone out of this horrible place. She blinked, feeling the beginnings of tears in her eyes, and hurriedly lifted a hand to wipe them away. Giving in to sadness like that wouldn't help her think, wouldn't do her any good. There would be time enough for tears when they all escaped.

"Oh, hello," she said, looking up. She caught sight of a young woman across the lobby. "I'm afraid you startled me." She wiped at her eyes again and offered the woman a smile.

Shannon's stash, for whatever reason, was still in the lobby. She'd long since been sharing a room with Sam and still she hadn't bothered to move all of her things away from the Doctor. Her clothes and medication - Aleve, the inhaler, and alcohol (which, to her, was also a medication of sorts) were in Sam's room, but her food and water stash remained.

Still a little hazy and haphazard looking, complete with bloodshot eyes, from the previous night's festivities, Shannon made her way out to the lobby, rubbing her eyes with both hands and allowing her sense memory to lead her to where her things had been left.

Crouching down, Shannon finally moved her hands from her eyes to rifle through the bag of goodies, resenting suddenly the fact that all she had on her these days were Slim Fast bars and water. Slim Fast bars were quickly becoming Shannon's least favorite thing about this place...

A woman's voice caught her attention and made her jump, whirling in place and managing to fall over on her behind. "Hi..." she said quietly, furrowing her brow at the stranger. Who kept leaving the goddamn door unbarricaded when Shannon wasn't around to remind people? Who was this woman, anyway? "I could say the same for you," she admitted, offering the other woman a small smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. "Are you looking for someone or...?"

Ripley had, after finding some not-too-terrible clothes, gone exploring in town.

Which is how she ended up poking her head in the museum in time to see a blonde woman sitting on the floor looking startled, and a dark haired woman standing nearby.

"Ahh ... hello. I'm not interrupting, am I?" She stepped all the way in, something red and white and something yellow draped over her shoulder, wearing a pair of jean shorts with a flower applique on the right butt pocket and a pair of worn sneakers that had seen better days, along with the tube socks that came with the box. She'd switched the yellow sweats out for the shorts, given how warm it was, and was just wearing the gray sleeveless she'd gone to sleep on the Sulaco.

"I didn't mean to startle you," Sarah said, watching the other woman carefully. She seemed a little hesitant, to Sarah's eyes. She took a step toward the woman and stretched out her hand. "I don't believe we've met, I...." She trailed off as she heard another woman's voice from near the front doors. She glanced over, taking in the other's appearance. Sarah had the distinct impression of being over-dressed. She hadn't changed since her arrival, save for keeping her coat draped over her arm rather than worn properly.

She offered the new woman a smile. "No, not at all." She glanced from one woman to the other. "Sarah Jane Smith. It's a pleasure to meet you both. I'm just taking a look round my new 'home' as it were." She glanced to the blonde woman as she spoke. She didn't blame the woman for being wary. Sarah was a little wary herself, but figured being friendly to everyone would help her far more than being openly suspicious. "And you two are?"

When the other woman started toward her, hand outstretched, Shannon climbed to her feet and started to reach forward to shake her hand, only the woman's voice trailed off in favor of another woman's voice. That did it. If people weren't going to barricade the fucking door, then Shannon was going to lock herself in Sam's room whenever she wasn't right with one of her boys. She felt outnumbered and uncomfortable and couldn't help looking over her shoulder, brow furrowed slightly, in hopes of Sam appearing suddenly in the hallway. Shit, even Jack, Ianto, or the Doctor would do, only Sam was the largest of them all and would make her feel exponentially safer just then.

Looking back at the second newcomer, Shannon dropped her hand to her side again, shrinking into herself and making a mental note to keep the two-by-four at her side from now on rather than in its hiding place under the desk which was currently behind the second woman. Stupid, stupid, stupid... she thought to herself. Dean would be disappointed in her. She wouldn't make that mistake again.

Rather than speak up, she let the first woman respond to the second woman's question. She opened her mouth to incredulously ask, "home?!" when the name the first woman gave rang a bell. "Sarah Jane, like...from the journals? The Doctor's friend?" she asked. Pausing, Shannon's eyes moved back to the second woman when the one who called herself Sarah Jane asked who they were. "I'm Shannon." She fought the urge to say snottily that she actually belonged here. She lived here. If Sarah Jane was the Doctor's Sarah Jane, then that, she thought, would be excused. The other woman, though, she had no clue.

Way to be there for me, Sam; I finally need some protecting and both times, you're nowhere to be found. Wake up with naked Anders and you're outside. Two strangers just barge their way right into my home and you're nowhere in sight. Some protector you've turned out to be, she thought with less bitterness and more disappointment...never mind the healthy dose of uncertainty and fear that she was making an effort to ignore.

"I'm Ripley." Ripley supplied to the question, letting the door close behind her as she walked all the way in. "Woke up here yesterday morning, so I'm just ... taking a look around." She nodded to the pair. "Nice to meet you both."

The blonde looked like this was anything but her idea of a good time. Ripley wondered what that was all about for a minute, then remembered the stuff in the journal about clones ... and experiments. Lady had a right to be twitchy, so Ripley ignored it.

Sarah Jane's smile widened as Shannon introduced herself and seemed to recognize her. She remembered the name from the journals as well. "Yes, the Doctor's friend. I'm glad to meet you in person, and to see you're still in one piece." That strange entry about getting rid of a clone version of Shannon was still troubling. "The Doctor said I could stay here. I do hope that's all right." She could tell that Shannon was a bit unnerved by her use of the word 'home.' It wouldn't surprise her if the Doctor had neglected to mention a new arrival to the other residents of the museum - he'd just assume everyone would be fine with it. She might remind him later about such things, if she thought of it. She didn't want to startle people or make them uncomfortable. Goodness knew this place could do a good enough job of it on its own.

She turned to the other woman as she introduced herself. "Pleased to meet you, Ripley," she said, offering another bright smile. "I only arrived here two days ago myself, so I'm still finding my way round."

"In one piece?" Shannon asked reluctantly. Then, it dawned on her about the clone saying she'd been disabled. "Oh, yeah. That was stupid," she muttered, rolling her eyes, feeling infinitely more comfortable upon Sarah Jane's having said that the Doctor had invited her and said she could stay. So long as the Doctor was cool with Sarah Jane, then Shannon was cool with her, too. "Oh, yeah, sorry. I've found myself a little out of the loop in this place lately..." she admitted almost apologetically.

Looking over at the woman who called herself Ripley, Shannon gave a nod of recognition. The woman from the future. With the not-quite-cryogenic thing, if she remembered right. At least, Shannon was proud of herself for, she could still remember things she'd read and written pretty well, even if she was knocked a little off kilter with what was going on in the museum right under her nose without her knowledge.

"I remember you, now," she told Ripley. "I see you found yourself some pants," she added with a sheepish grin. "And again, sorry to welcome you both to Hell," she added awkwardly.

Aha. Now the name Shannon rang a bell. The unofficial greeter, at least through most of the journal. "Yeah, I did, thanks. Was a /tad/ embarassing getting dropped here in nothing but a tank top and my underwear." Then she grinned. "And thanks for the welcome. You'n the other guy ... Bob? Doesn't talk much? Were the only ones that weren't all cryptic and wierd when I wrote."

She glanced around. "Looks like this place has seen better days. Whole place is like that. I wonder why?" It's a mostly rhetorical question, but if either woman wants to speculate, she won't mind a bit.

Sarah nodded in sympathy when Shannon mentioned being out of the loop. She still wasn't quite sure she was in the loop herself. She supposed she'd figure out everything if she were here for more than a few days. She held out a good deal of hope, however, that the Doctor's sonic modulator would work and that she'd be heading home very soon. "It's all right," she said to Shannon. "It's not surprising any of us are out of sorts."

Sarah looked over the building again as Ripley remarked on the dilapidation. "There are some rather modern conveniences here for the place to have fallen into such disrepair over a period of time," she said, thinking. "The petrol station, for starters. It can't be that old." A thought struck her, one she didn't like at all. "You don't suppose the place was designed to be this run down, do you?"

Cocking her eyebrows and looking down, Shannon nodded. "Yeah, I guess. It's just, for the past week, I've been really on top of my game and then two days ago with that Insider son of a bitch..." she sighed, looking back up. "I have a hard time letting go of knowing each and every thing that's going on in here. The museum, I mean, not the whole place."

"Oh, yeah, Silent Bob, I think they call him. Apparently for good reason. He and I talked a lot on the journals a few days back and he's a friend of one of my friends - who I actually haven't seen in a long while, come to think of it... - but I've never met him in person," Shannon said. "You sound like you definitely got the short end of the stick getting dropped in your undies, yikes," she sympathized.

Shannon opened her mouth to comment on the state of the town in reply to Ripley when Sarah Jane spoke up instead. And actually... Shannon raised her eyebrows and looked back at the other woman thoughtfully. "Hey, you know...I never thought about that," she said pensively. "That's not a bad theory at all, come to think of it..." she admitted.

Ripley blinked. "I'm sorry, but ... petrol?" She doesn't recognize the word. Then she nods. "Could be."

When Shannon spoke up, Ripley grinned. "He reminds me of a coworker of mine." She says. "Brett didn't say more than three words together most of the time either. But Bob's definitely nice enough." Hey, he dragged himself to the thrift store and from there clear out to the barn ... that definitely qualifies as nice in Ripley's book. "I think they yanked me right out of the hypersleep chamber." She says. "That's why I was dressed like that. Y'don't wear much clothes in those things. You have a lot of monitoring equipment attached to you."

There's not much she can say about Insider. Oh, she'd seen the posts, but most of them hadn't made a lick of sense to her, except in the context of someone yanking everyone's chains.

"Brings up the question of /why/ the place was designed to be so run-down, though." Ripley said. "Though that starts taking us into the realm of figuring out the wierdos responsible for this place."

The Insider had been a very odd thing indeed. Sarah hadn't spoken with him...her...it much. It had been clear that whoever it was wanted to unnerve people. Mentioning Andrea had indeed unnerved her, but she hadn't wanted to write anything to that effect. It was more disturbing that the person had known about Andrea than what he (for lack of a better term) had said regarding Sarah's culpability. She had come to terms fully with Andrea's fate not too long ago, and had been able to speak with the woman personally. She doubted that the Insider knew that much.

She filed away Bob's name for future reference. Both women spoke highly of him, so he would be someone to look for. "Petrol," Sarah repeated. "Gasoline." She wasn't sure whether the woman was just unused to English terminology, or whether she didn't know what the substance was. Although, her next words made Sarah suspect the latter.

"Hypersleep?" Sarah asked, turning to Ripley. "Like a stasis chamber?" She had a brief flashback to her youth, and being put into a sort of hibernation chamber herself, on Nerva Beacon, so she felt she had at least some idea of what the woman was speaking about. "Pardon me for asking, but when are you from, Ms. Ripley?" Future, definitely, but how far? Perhaps she was from Nerva?

Sarah wasn't sure whether to be pleased that her theory seemed to hold some water, or disturbed. "Throw off the subjects?" she suggested. "This place looks on the surface to be unsafe, unstable. Deserted areas usually mean something bad has happened. For a town to be in such a state would imply something quite bad indeed. That would make the people put here immediately nervous, more ill-at-ease." She could almost hear Mr. Smith saying something similar in an analysis in her head. That thought brought her a little comfort. If she could still puzzle things out, she'd be fine in the end.

Sarah Jane beat Shannon to the punch once more, because it took her a moment to recall what exactly the British kid, Sid, had said 'petrol' meant. Gasoline, right. The gas station. "Bob's a cool guy, yeah," Shannon agreed with a small smile. "If he's half as funny as Jay, I might be tempted to take Jay up on the half-assed offer for me to head home with them when the Doctor gets us out of this hell hole," she added.

It wasn't entirely true, of course, because she'd far rather go traveling with the Doctor, but she wasn't going to say that in front of Ripley. Sarah Jane, maybe later, but she wasn't sure that the Doctor wanted the whole of the community knowing he could apparently travel through time and space in some contraption called a TARDIS. TARDIS...? Yeah, TARDIS. That was what Jack had said. 'Time and Relative Dimensions in Space,' if she remembered right.

She said nothing as Ripley explained hypersleep and Sarah Jane seemed to latch right onto the meaning, at least from what Shannon could tell, almost as if she knew exactly what it was. Which, of course, made Shannon wonder absently where in time or space the Doctor had found her. She simply listened to the conversation quietly, eyes flitting back and forth from one woman to the other.

When Ripley wondered aloud why exactly the place might've been designed to look the way it did, Shannon waited, looking back at Sarah Jane, in hopes of an intelligent response that Shannon herself couldn't seem to muster. When Sarah said it, Shannon nodded, pulling a face, half-impressed, and half-thoughtful. "Yeah, well, if that's the plan, then mission fucking accomplished," she muttered more to herself than to either of the other women.

To Ripley, she asked, "have you found yourself a buddy? We all sort of buddy up here. Watch each other's backs. You kind of...have to," she said, again with an air of apology in her voice.

"Oh!" Ripley felt a little silly. Gasoline. D'oh. The crude version thereof that they'd been sent to harvest in the Nostromo. Crude oil and all its forms tended to make the world go 'round, at least where she came from. "Right. Sorry. Just never heard it called that before."

She nodded. "Yeah. We have spaceflight ... rather extensive, actually, but the ships are relatively slow. It was either find a way to keep the crews in stasis for most of the trip, or make the ships multi-generational. And I'm from 2179." Then, with a grimace. "I was born in 2092, though. Long story." Since she clearly is not 87 years old, there has to be a story there /somewhere/.

"Makes a certain degree of sense." She agrees with Sarah, then shakes her head. "No, I haven't, Shannon. Was just doing a quick run-around of the town, see if I spotted somewhere I'd like to stay other than the barn. Way too far out for my tastes." And as independent as she tended to be, she could definitely see the benefits of a buddy system. Sometimes, a partner was all that stood between you and not making it out alive.

Sarah Jane smiled almost apologetically. "It's the British term." She glanced at the two women. "Both from the States?" she asked.

She listened to Ripley's description of space travel, and made a note of the year the woman claimed to be from. She hadn't been to 2179 herself, but the description didn't sound implausible. She raised an eyebrow as she did the math on Ripley's dates. When the other woman didn't elaborate, Sarah decided it was probably personal, and perhaps not something the other woman wanted to share with two relative strangers. If she had to guess, it had something to do with the hypersleep chambers.

"I should probably find one as well," Sarah said when Shannon asked about a buddy. Of course, her first thought was the Doctor. But perhaps that wouldn't be the best option. He would work better if he could move about when and where he needed to, without worrying about someone always tagging along. Even if that someone was an old friend. Sarah glanced at Shannon. "I'm sure there's enough room here, if you find this place to your liking. It's massive." She didn't want to overstep her bounds on the offer, but it seemed like the proper thing to do.

"I'm from the states," Shannon replied with a small nod. Originally, anyway, she thought, but didn't bother saying, mainly because she wasn't terribly keen on the idea of having to explain the plane crash. Again.

The mixture of confusion and awe was fairly evident on Shannon's face as she listened to Ripley talking about the future and she gave Sarah Jane a sidelong glance reflexively, wondering if anything sounded familiar to the other woman.

Her eyes went back to Ripley when the woman said she didn't have a buddy and Shannon found herself realizing just how lucky she was to have Sam - and how stupid it would be for her to ruin it over a crush - when Sarah mentioned that she, too, was without a buddy to watch her back. Rather than reply, because she couldn't empathize with either of them in that respect, Shannon simply chewed on her bottom lip and gave a non-committal shrug at Sarah Jane's having extended the offer to Ripley. "All the good rooms are kind of taken, but if you don't mind de-cluttering and cleaning, there's plenty more," she offered.

"Actually, no, I'm not." Ripley said. "I was born and raised on a colony on the moon, called Olympia. But where I come from, the United States sort of ended up taking over most everything. They had a chokehold on everything regarding space, though one massive company." Hence her lack of recognition of 'British' English. Oh, it still existed in England, but she'd never BEEN there, only ever in space, where 'American' English was the rule.

She noticed Shannon's reluctance to have someone else living in the museum, Ripley just said. "I'll find someplace. I was mostly just poking my nose in here to see what it was like." Then she grimaced. "The partner's going to be a bit harder, with me not really knowing anyone well yet." After Ash and Burke, Ripley needed to /know/ she could trust a person at her back.

That was different for Sarah. Most times she'd been to the future, she'd encountered people from Earth who spoke British English. American English was more rare. Perhaps the Americans took the moon, while the English went further out among the stars? Or perhaps it was a phenomenon unique to Ripley's time-stream? Sarah wasn't quite sure how to ask without sounding rude, or giving anything away. The Doctor hadn't mentioned he was a time-traveler; he'd said he was from London, so he told her the other day. She wasn't sure why, but following his lead was always a good idea.

"Are there lots of colonies on the moon?" Sarah asked. She glanced at the museum as Ripley mentioned wanting to see what it was like. "It could do with a bit of a scrub down," she said, smiling faintly. "But some of the displays aren't in that bad of shape. Interesting collections here." She nodded in sympathy over concerns about a partner. "I do know a few people here quite well, but I don't think partnering with them would be the best solution to everything. Don't want to get in the way of their work."

Shannon's brow furrowed slightly at Ripley's explanation. It didn't match what little she'd heard from Anders and it definitely didn't seem to match what she remembered of the things Kaylee had said. This place was so weird. People from the future had stories that didn't mesh, people from the past; people from the present, so to speak, all had stories that didn't quite come together. It didn't make any sense. It wasn't to say that she thought Ripley was lying or was mistaken in any way, because Shannon was, in fact, fairly certain that she wasn't...it was just a lot more than Shannon could wrap her head around properly.

"None of us - with a few exceptions - know one another very well. I've been here for a little over a week, so that's the longest I've known anyone here. You just have to find someone that seems trustworthy enough to keep their eyes open when yours are closed, honestly. We kind of don't have a choice but to trust one another," she replied apologetically. Shannon ought to know. Her partner was the one person she trusted the least when they'd first met, but Sam hadn't ever given her the impression that he intended to hurt her, so she had to trust that he'd watch her back. She'd, luckily, been right in doing so. And lucky, she continued to realize.

When Sarah said she didn't want to get in the way of their work, Shannon immediately knew what she'd meant. She supposed, perhaps, that was why she'd kept herself attached to Sam even though she'd trusted the Doctor far more. The man had an air about him of purpose and Shannon had somehow known, even then when she'd only really just met him, that having a Shannon-sized barnacle was only going to slow him down. Sam, however vocal about things, didn't seem to mind it and she'd somehow known he wouldn't. Interesting, that: the way that people gave off certain types of vibes without really knowing it. It was yet another reason why she didn't think she'd be spending an awful lot of time in Jack and Ianto's room unless she was sleeping; she didn't want to get in their way and they gave off the same purposeful vibe that the Doctor did. Especially Jack.

"I really don't mean to be rude," she said slowly, looking back and forth between the two women, "but...I'm kind of starving and not feeling awesome, so..." Shannon let her voice trail off and her bloodshot eyes speak the rest for her. She was still trying to come off a bit of a hangover and wanted nothing more than to go back to Sam's room, have something to eat, and go back the hell to sleep in hopes of waking up a little more refreshed the second time around.

"The entire moon's been colonized." Ripley said. "It's pretty much a second Earth. All under domes and the like ... or it was when I last saw it. Been a while since I been there."

Things could have changed in the nearly sixty years she was asleep. They HAD, after all, come up with a way to /create/ breathable atmosphere. Maybe they'd done that on Luna.

"I'll figure something out." Ripley said, then waved Shannon's apology away. "No problem. I'll just take a look around, if you don't mind?"

Sarah looked in sympathy at Shannon. The woman did look as though a good lie-down and a bit of food would do her wonders. "Please don't let us keep you," she said kindly, offering the other woman another smile. "It's been nice meeting you...considering the circumstances. I'm sure we'll see each other again. And I'm sorry to have startled you before." She held out her hand to Shannon, before turning to Ripley.

"It's been nice meeting you as well. Which way are you headed?" Sarah wasn't quite done exploring herself, but she didn't want to intrude on the other woman's time.

With a smile and a nod, once again looking apologetic, Shannon looked back and forth between the two. "Likewise," she said to Sarah Jane and added a tired-sounding, "sure, yeah, go for it," to Ripley. Her eyes moved back to Sarah Jane and she offered a small smile. "It's fine, sorry I freaked out on you guys."

Once the other two women seemed to have politely dismissed her, Shannon headed back to Sam's room, closing herself inside. "Sleeeeep," she whispered to herself as she pushed the barricade in front of the door. And soon thereafter, she was back asleep on the floor.

Sarah nodded. It wasn't the direction she'd been heading, so she decided to let the other woman have her wander on her own. "See you later, then," she said, offering another smile. As the other woman headed out, Sarah Jane turned her attention back to the building as a whole. She continued her explorations, hoping to find some clue as to what sort of a place she'd found herself in, and maybe find something that would help the Doctor get them all out.
