Who: Laura Moon, George Lass, L Lawliet, Merope Gaunt, River Tam
What: Finding odd swag and some...body.
When: Day 9, Dawn
Where: Clock Tower
Rating: TBD, but let's start with a PG-13 for the gore of body finding
Status: Active

The Night Watch was the last thing she had wanted to do that night. After the way she'd spent the previous night, she would much rather have been at home. Worse was the fact that she could sense the temperature rising over night due to the melting of the snow; the cool spell and the snow had not lasted, and warmer weather would mean problems for herself. Even worse than that was that she had not kept her promise to L by returning to him. She had popped back into the shop for only a few moments after her meeting with Sarah, and he had not been around when she was there. The Watch was necessary, so she had headed out to patrol her area. After all, protecting everyone included protecting L, and it was the least she could offer the community as a whole. A quick glance at her journal had revealed that there was all manner of insanity going on, and vigilance was necessary. People could be not what they seemed.

In the eastern sky, or what she assumed was the eastern sky since that was where the sun came from, the sun was rising. It was like some sort of nasty fireball to her. She could not feel its rays, but she could see them, and it taunted her. It promised that the day would increase the rate of decay or her body ever so slightly. She did have Norn water in reserve, but she did not want to use it until it was necessary. Things would be getting a bit nastier before they got better. And there wasn't any promise that what she assumed to be Norn water really was. It might have been a cruel, mocking part of the experiment. She would not put it past them.

She was almost on top of the clock tower, turning towards the drug store that she called home with...L...when she noticed the pile of objects at its base. She had approached from the back, and if she hadn't been on alert from a night of successful watch, she would have missed the items completely. It was a small pile, not like it was lumber or anything, but they were clearly personal effects of some sort.

Curious as to what the items were, and if they belonged to anyone, she knelt down. She began sifting through the items. Misa? Who was Misa? And why would anyone want to advertise that they'd had a mindfuck? Then again, they were perfectly good t-shirts. Perhaps she should take one for L. She'd think about it. She passed over the wrist strap and postcard, as well as the bells. The DVDs didn't seem like they'd do anyone any good, either, though she remembered liking Full Metal Jacket at one point or another. A Bible was something that she had absolutely no use for, and two was doubly useless. The lemons, though, that was something like what she'd been looking for when she went for food for L. She remembered sailors eating citrus. She didn't know what they did, but they sounded good. She stuffed two into the pocket of her hoodie.

It was the teddy bear that caught her attention. Laura liked things that were soft, and the bear was. The fact that Logan's name was stitched into the belly was even funnier. Arching a brow, she looked into its face, moving its arms around. "So, Logan," she said. It had been a long night, and she had not spoke to anyone since Sarah the previous day. "What do you make of all this mess?"

It wasn't as though George wasn't used to the cold, but really, these last few days had been a bitch. That, and the fact that it had been a week and then some, and they were all still trapped in the so-called glass cage. George was, for all intents and purposes, feeling rather morose about that fact. She'd taken to wondering how her friends/co-workers were back home, without her, the apparent recently-appointed 'boss'. Had the Powers That Be appointed someone else, gotten them yet another Cameron Kane (if so, she hoped they'd take care of this one like they'd taken care of the last one) or were souls all being trapped in dead bodies for all eternity suffering for their entrapment like she'd seen happen once or twice before? Actually, that thought only made her mood worse. It was horrifying, to say the least. The only thing more horrifying to her, was that she was still here.

She'd taken to walk around 'town' aimlessly thinking about all these things without much hope of reaching any type of conclusion - and she knew this beforehand.

George had seen the clock tower from a little far back, sighing as she remembered waking up in it naked with a woman she'd never met before. This place really was a mind-fuck. That was when she saw a woman she had never seen before - this time, fully dressed, which was a good thing - looking over a pile of stuff, and, apparently, talking to something from that pile. Well, it was easy to get lonely here, after all. She wasn't going to judge. Much.

Coming up from behind the woman, George tilted her head a little and looked at the pile of stuff. "What's all this, then?" She asked, wondering if the woman even knew. She crouched down beside the woman, and looked over the stuff with her eyes. The Teddy Bear named Logan caused a few under-breath giggles, as did the t-shirts. "I'm snagging me one of those." She said with a grin. And she did. The white one.

L had meant to stay safe and quiet in the liquor store/pharmacy. He truly had... but yesterday had been enough to show him that it wasn't always possible. Trouble could find him even if he didn't go looking for it, and even though he ached and hurt in a few mentionable ways, he had decided to go and look for Laura. She was his partner and lover, and if something had happened to her...

He thought, idly, of visiting Merope, another Night Watch widow. Her partner, Rorschach, seemed to leave and be gone often as well. Perhaps she had seen Laura, and L could ask her. However, as he approached the clock tower from behind and scaled it, it quickly became apparent that there was no need. Laura was there, along with George, and L hastily went over to join them. He had a lot to ask Laura... until he notied the pile of items. His eyes strayed to the bear, marked "Logan", in her arms. He was torn between his initial desire to seize Laura and smother her in kisses, whether or not George was present, or ask in a quiet voice why she was cuddling ANYTHING named "Logan." Instead of going with either option, he simply stared dolefully.

Merope heard noises sometime during the night while she was rested on the table inside the Clock Tower where she resided. Granted, it wasn't the warmest or nicest place, but it seemed the most scary and less likely to be agitaited by people around them. The girl heard more noises, more shifting and she opened her eyes.

Her lower body gave a sharp, agonizing pain as a reminder of the infection that caused her to look so ill in the first place. Using whatever body strength she had left, she thought someone might be outside, but she hadn't the courage to go look out side the door the real way. Instead, she took the stairs to the Clock Tower upper area, begrudgingly, until she was at the top and she slipped over to the face.

Merope approached the face and saw something hanging, when she got a bit closer to look outside she noticed the body. The scent of it made her suddenly ill and she gagged, her stomach was trying to vomit but there was really nothing to cough up.

That meant that someone came inside while she was sleeping, didn't it? She felt overwhelming guilt that she should have been away or that the dead person should have been her. Being that she didn't know what to do and running wasn't an option, she went down the stairs to get her blanket and come back.

It didn't feel right leaving the body alone, she'd wait until someone came in and found her. Merope wrapped the blanket around her body and underneath her to give the infection some easing spot to settle in.

How daft she felt, how useless that she couldn't help this person. Her paranoia heightened, but there was no inclination that she might have to deal with something else today and her eyes just focused on the nearby blood splatters. Her eyes filled with tears, but they were silent and fell without any loud dramatics.

River was asleep in the thrift store when the screaming suddenly attacked her and was too loud to handle. She gasped awake to hear another scream begin to accompany her own, only to realize the voice belonged to herself. Gasping for air and trying to force herself to breathe normal, River sat up fast and pulled on the way to big pink sweater she found over her white dress. Though she knew that it had warmed up, at the moment she couldn't think about anything else but the screaming. It wouldn't go away. She ran over to the clock tower and saw the group of people at the foot of it. Although she knew every person standing there she didn't bother with hellos but rather pushed her way past them into the tower to run up to the body.

When she got closer she started to slow down, hearing another nearby. Looking to find the new person she was picking up she noticed Merope. Though she never formally met her she glanced at the girl and went to look at the body. She leaned on the ledge to get closer to the face. It was then that she realized who it was. River closed her eyes hard and pulled herself back into the tower. She walked over to Merope, "Merope." she said as she knelt down, "Yes they came. You lived." she moved to sit next to the girl to try to comfort her in her own way.

"You're not human," she said flatly to George, though she looked over at the stranger and offered her a sad, half-smile. "I couldn't feel you coming. It's nice to have some company other than little Logan here, though." Laura held up the bear and waggled its little paw at the woman. "You're up early, if you're the type who sleeps."

Brushing herself off and rising to her feet, Laura couldn't help but chuckle at the fact that George had taken the t-shirt. "Help yourself to it. As far as I know it's up for grabs. Not sure how useful any of it is going to be in the long run, though. I was thinking about keeping Logan, but I think he needs a better home than I can provide. I'm obligated to cuddle persons other than him." Looking down at the bear, Laura kissed his forehead. "Sorry, Buddy, but though you're soft and squishy and awfully cute, I'll have to wait another day for a stuffed animal. Somebody probably needs you more than I do." Logan was dropped back into the pile. She toed one of the DVDs. "Useless crap."

Bending over, she grabbed the skeleton key. "Might be useful to a detective friend I've got. He's pretty good at figuring out where things go." She slipped it into her pocket. It was upside down that she sensed him. "L," she said, instantly knowing by the feel of his light who it was. She could hear his heart beating. Looking at him through her legs, she gave a little wink. She turned after righting herself and reached into her pocket, producing two lemons and a skeleton key. "For you," she said. She reached out, gently pushing his hair out of his eyes. "I promised I'd come back to you. Seems you met me on my way home from work."

It was then that she noticed another sign of life. She could only sense Merope. "Human," she said, looking for a moment like a pointer dog in the direction of the clock tower. Looking back at the unfamiliar woman, she nodded. "My name's Laura. I'm on the Night Watch, and though it isn't night, I'd like to check out who it is. I don't remember having anyone except Rorschach listed as living here, and it doesn't feel like him." She looked from the stranger to L and back again. "Do you two want to come along? It's a little early for people to be left behind." Her brows furrowed. "Crying?"

River caught her by surprise. Blinking, she watched as the girl shoved through them and went into the tower. "It's dawn. Are there usually this many people up and around? I don't sleep, but I remember that I never saw the sun rise when I was human." She waited for her two companions to decide if they would rather stay or go. She was wanting to get home and into her glass box; there was cool air that she'd been careful about preserving in there, and it would keep her relatively fresh. Still, she could not ignore people who needed her. She offered so little on a regular basis that it seemed important to reach out.

George didn't know how to respond to that. She could retort that yes she was, but really, was she? At least not 100%. So, she decided to focus on little Logan. Which brought more giggles. "It's funny, because the Logan I know is the farthest thing from a teddy bear there is. In some ways, anyway."

She noticed Ryuzaki coming up as well, and smiled faintly at him, and then looked back at the woman she didn't know, only to see her be very friendly to...L? Gosh, how many names did he have? George assumed this was his girlfriend. "I couldn't sleep, I guess. It's just downed on me how long I've been here. Too long." She nodded at Laura as she introduced herself. "I'm George. And sure, I'll come along." Not much to be afraid of, she didn't think.

At this she saw River, but before she could say anything, River had entered the tower. "What the hell is going on?" She asked, confused. Although none of them probably knew either.

Any chagrin or annoyance L might have felt when he saw Laura with "Logan" evaporated when he heard Laura hint that she was obligated to cuddle others. As she discarded the bear and winked at him (through those long legs and so close to that fine ass he thought of far too often), he returned her cheerful greeting with a sheepish grin. He was too jealous and possessive, apparently. He had to stop resenting Logan so much simply because he called her, along with most other women, "doll." He took the lemons and the key, balancing them carefully in one hand so he'd have a free one. He wanted to return her affectionate gesture, after all. He trepidatiously met Laura's eyes, stroking her cheek with his thumb, saying, "Thank you for the presents. I have... lemons... and a mystery. It looks like fun. Also, I'm glad you're OK." he said the last words with an added tone of something a bit like melancholy, to show that he had been worried.

It certainly didn't feel like Rorschach... L, an auditory learner whose eyes usually shied away from faces, recognized the voice immediately. "Merope?" he mused quietly. She seemed to be very sad very often, but why would she be crying so early? Had Rorschach done something to her? Was she still sick and in pain? "I'll go," he volunteered quickly, glancing at George, a previous rescue-buddy. "I know her... but not her," he added, blinking, as River pushed by. Pocketing the skeleton key and still holding both lemons in one long-fingered hand, he bit his lip. "We really should see what this is about..."

As she set inside the Clock Tower near the face, she was approached by a person who randomly entered and set down to comfort her. The only person who really ever comforted with words had been Rorschach and she wasn't sure how safe this person was. Merope lowered her eyes a little and looked in the direction of what was most likely a dead human and she nearly gagged.

"A-Are you r-reading my mind?" She found, not really liking someone so new reading her exact thoughts. The black-haired girl avoided much of the talk that was probably going to come around her.

River tilted her head at Merope, "Read...mind?" she made a confused face at the girl. However she didn't have enough time to fully respond when the screaming in her started gain. River grabbed a hold of her head and wimpered a bit at the constant stream of voices flowing inside of her. How many more would the people have to kill before they got whatever it was they wanted?

Footsteps up the nearby stairs showed her that the others did follow her like she hoped they would. River didn't want to touch the body. Light was the most talkative at the moment since he was the most recent dead and she felt the closer she was to him the more he screamed to her.

"Don't they understand? Why can't they understand? Can--can't..." she muttered over and over to herself as she rubbed hr head and began to cry.

"Let's go, then. We'd better make this quick. I've been up all night, and I really need to get home." Laura set off after River. She'd never been to the clock tower before, really; she had only passed it on the night watch. Entering, she focused on the light that she identified as human. She found River and the strange, pale, sick looking girl. Neither of them looked very well.

Kneeling down, she looked into their faces. She had no comfort to offer them. Honestly, she had to act professional. "What's the meaning of all this?" she asked in her dull, quiet voice. Hopefully an aura of authority and calm would help make them come back to center. Hysterics didn't solve anything. She couldn't even begin to understand what was going on with the two other women. She looked helplessly back at L and George. Empathy was not Laura's strong suit.

It was when she looked over her shoulder that she saw something disturbing. Could that have been the source of their anguish? It seemed that some...body...was out there, and there was a faint creaking as the rope swung back and forth. She did not make any expression of surprise, however. She did not want to startle them at all. A group of hysterical humans and other beings of some sort never really solved anything.

And George set off after the woman, who had of yet to introduce herself, not that it really mattered at the moment. She didn't know what to say either once they got inside, and there was the weird chick she'd met the first or second day - the one who didn't speak and looked three shades of uncomfortable with all those people around her - and River. And both of them looked awful sad and/or sick.

George's eyes widened the more she saw them in this state, and when Laura looked back at her and Ryuzaki, George shrugged, but walked towards them anyway, sighing.

"What happened? What's going on?" She asked the both of them in a low, sweet voice. Of course she looked around her for something that might be the cause of that behavior...And found it. She didn't scream - god knew how used to death she was by now - but her heart did miss a beat and George closed her eyes, deflating, before opening them again. She had her answer.

L had started to approach Merope and River, noticing that Laura seemed to have her hands full with soothing both of the upset young women. He knew well that Laura's empathy left something to be desired when dealing with most individuals, and though he wasn't much better, he at least knew Merope, and she seemed to like him. However, he never completed two steps toward them. He stared, wide-eyed, at the sight of Light Yagami swinging slowly back and forth in front of the clock's face.

For a moment, that was all he could do. Thoughts raced through his skull, hitting the inside and ricocheting painfully back and forth. It felt like they were punching holes in his brain; he realized, after a moment, that he was sitting on the ground, his legs folding under him, seeing spots. He shook himself; with Merope looking like she'd vomit and River sobbing, this was not the time for him to faint. He'd seen things like this before... it was just a body. It just... happened to have Light's face.

Swaying slightly, still feeling unsteady, he stood, starting to climb toward the spire. He'd figure out a way when he got there, but something about seeing his friend's body in such a horrible way compelled him to try to get Light down. He had to get the noose off of his neck, at the very least... even though L knew that Light was dead, and that it was far too late to save him, there was comfort in that thought. And someone had to close his eyes. They were wide, bulging, and terrible.

Merope reacted very badly to some random woman approaching her, being untactful and then starting to cry out. Her eyes widened and she felt very uncomfortable with the situation and her stomach hitched and she gagged a third time at the scent she smelled. Merope wasn't feeling very safe, even went another person stood in front of her, she saw L out of the corner of her eye.

With very much difficulty she struggled to get up and walked much slower than she had before until she reached L. Merope couldn't very well lift herself, but she looked in his direction,"...L? Do you know him?" She said in a caring voice.

River looked from Laura to George and back again. She stood and began to slowly inch her way closer to the door. Her head was already filled faintly with the residence voices but now adding in voices of the dead she didn't know how much longer she was going to be able to sit still with so many people around her.

"Extinquished Light." she said, still quietly crying from all of the pain in her head. "Forever encased in darkness. They never lay down. Never...lay...lie..." she leaned against the wall and held herself. "Won't stop. Never stop. Why can't they understand there is nothing I can do?" she rubbed at her eyes.

"Seems we've all seen it now," she said, looking around the room. Some were reacting better than others, that was for sure. Looking to George, she nodded. "Could you take care of her?" She motioned at River with her head. "I've got to stop somebody from falling and breaking his neck. It's my job. I'm called Laura, by the way. Unfortunate that we couldn't meet on better terms." At least George had gotten a t-shirt out of it. Still, she didn't want to offend anyone, and that seemed insensitive.

Laura was right behind Merope. Why was this pale, sick looking girl going after L? She shook her head, ignoring the odd feeling in the back of her mind, and she reached for him. Grabbing his arm, she stood firmly in place. If he pulled too hard he'd yank her right along with him. Still, she could at least pull against his pull and hold him in place long enough to reason with him. "L, no," she murmured, shaking her head. Her dark blue eyes, hidden under the dark, bruised circles of her eyelids, looked into his face pleadingly. "L, we need to leave the body in place. You're a detective. You know that better than anybody. We aren't going to be able to...collect evidence and whatnot. We need to get in touch with somebody who's better at this kind of thing. Not to mention that you're probably in shock." She looked around the room, forcing a sigh out. "Most everyone is."

Her attention snapped away from him and to her shoulder as several staples fell out of the sleeve of her hoodie and hit the floor. That was inconvenient. Letting go of him, she caught her reflection in the glass. The right arm was noticeably disjointed and out of place when compared with the left. What time was it? This was more than inconvenient. She needed, very badly, to get out of there.

"Everyone, please, we can't stay here. This is a crime scene." She didn't want to leave people behind, but she needed to get out of there. Time was ticking on in the real world, and for once it was having an effect on her. "We need to get out of here. We need to get out of here and go someplace else. Does everyone here have somewhere else to be? Because, while we shouldn't be touching and moving the body, no one should be staying here with it." She looked at Merope. Would the girl make it long enough to get somewhere else?

River seemed in pain, and by what she said it was almost like the spirit of the dead guy hanging there was talking to her, or other spirits were, even. George sat beside her but didn't touch her, knowing it would probably freak her out. She nodded at Laura, in understanding, but didn't say anything. She, too, wished they hadn't met only to find a body together seconds afterwards.

She watched in slight horror mixed with compassion as Ryuzaki tried to climb up to release the body, though she shook her head in disapproval when Merope, of all people, Merope who looked sicker than sick, went after him.

"Come on down, L, Laura's right!" Apparently she called him L. Maybe he had a lot of names. But inside George felt like climbing up along with him to release his soul from there. And that posed as somewhat of an inner struggle for George. Because she knew whoever he was, his soul was still in there and he was suffering. Scratching her head, George turned to Laura.

"Laura, um...I agree with you and all but...His soul is trapped." It sounded terribly awkward, how could it not? But George was still very much defined by what she did, and she couldn't get over it.

Though he was turned away from all of them, his attention focused solely on Light's hanging body... the body that could have been him, or Laura... L heard Merope's soft, timid voice. Compassionate, even when she was so sick. It caused him to waver for a moment, glancing back, wondering what to say to her. Yes, I know him. He is a murderer, he loves me. He is my friend, he wants me to die instead. He is... He was. L had to remember to say that, now. He was, past tense. He looked away again, not wanting to see River's tears, not wanting to hear her sobs. He just wanted to go somewhere quiet, somewhere like Laura's cooler, and make this world leave him alone for a little while. It was getting to be too much. She was talking about a light, or Light, and hysterical, as if she had known him herself. Her reaction put whatever Misa's (Light's girlfriend) would have been to shame.

The world was spinning again. L couldn't have climbed higher if he'd wanted to, or stress-induced vertigo would have set in, and he'd have fallen. He felt wretched, and moreso when Laura grabbed his arm, gently but firmly, and spoke to him as one might speak to a child. About collecting evidence... as if they could, anyway! He started to tug against her, even though he knew he'd fall... but he resigned, after a moment, succumbing to her steadfast voice of reason. He was shaking as the reality of Light's death started to set in, past the light-headed desire to fix things. He nodded to show that he understood, even if he couldn't immediately climb back down. That would have to wait until his head came back together. He would not risk falling a second time just because of Light... even if it was as George said, and whatever soul that murderer might have ever had was still in his body.

Merope stared at him with worry etched on her pale visage, she thought of reaching out to him as lightly as she could but retracted. Laura and George seemed to have the whole situation taken care of and took a rather slow step back. The hysterics and drama was more than she could emotionally handle; the crying, the shouting, the begging and everything was something she'd rather not be around. Merope looked down towards the floor and shook her head.

Instead of trying to comfort L now, she would wait until later or some other time when so many wasn't around him.

Laura's orders came to no shock, but Merope wasn't able to walk around so freely. There would be no way she would leave without Rorschach, she had no intentions on leaving until he returned. Merope shook her head,"I'm going to wait for Rorschach." Rorschach had told her enough times that she could depend on him and she wasn't a burden that she'd believed it mostly.

River watched as Laura tried to persuade L to come down and then back at George when she spoke of Light's soul being trapped. Everything seemed to be rushing at River all at once. The dead inside her as well as these still alive in her anway. Too many people inside her was more than River could handle.

"Trapped. Lost. Taken away forever." she cried harder as she stood up away from the group. She began to say a handful of broken sentences in chinese as she turned to run back down the stairs and as far away from the building as possible. She hoped that the further she was from the body the quieter the dead would be.

Something inside of Laura hurt when he responded to Merope more than he did to her own gentle words. Her dark eyes flicked over to the girl. Who was she? How did she know L? But now was not the time. She needed to focus on L, on getting him away from danger, and danger was climbing up to the body when you were emotionally distraught. "L," she said softly, shaking her head. "L, please, listen to me. I don't know much, but what I do know is that I do not think you climbing up there is a good idea. Please come down. Let's go. Let's go somewhere." She kept her grip firm on him, but her shoulder was shifting against her will. When he tugged against it, it shifted noticeably, exposing the damaged tendons and sinews inside of her ripped arm. A bit of formaldehyde dripped onto the floor with a splat. She needed her cooler, and badly.

"You," she said to Merope, reluctantly keeping her hold on L. "You live here, then? I trust you. I need you to make sure that no one moves the body until someone who can safely get it down can get to it. Tell Rorschach that it's an official order from the Night Watch if you have to. Tell him Laura says it's the right thing to do." She glanced up at L. "I need to get him home. I need to get myself home." Laura wasn't partial to lying, but... "I'm not feeling well, and I don't think he is, either."

Turning to George, she canted her head. What did she mean? She'd have to ask later. There was something odd about her, and she wanted to know more. Perhaps like called to like in a way. They were united in death. "It may be so that his soul is trapped," she murmured quietly, respectfully. If there was one thing the dead had it was respect for the dead. She nodded to River, and then she watched her run away. She felt sorry for someone that sensitive. A psychic? She couldn't remember the name for someone who could talk to the dead.

"Please, L," she whispered, leaning closer to where he was climbing, hoping that only he could hear her. "Please, I need to get into my coffin. I'll carry you if you can't walk, if you need me to. But staying here isn't good for either of us."

George was getting anxious. It was one thing not to do her job when no post-its were coming up, but it was another to see a dead person right there and know his soul was trapped, suffering horrors and probably screaming for them to help him.

"It's not a matter of maybe, it is so, and I don't wanna move him, but I need to get up there and reap him." Nice way to explain things there Peanut. It was almost like she could hear Rube right now, which only made her more annoyed. And she would have climbed up there already, if L wasn't up there trying to do something stupid but entirely understandable.
