Who: Laura Moon, George Lass, L Lawliet, Merope Gaunt, River Tam
What: Finding odd swag and some...body.
When: Day 9, Dawn
Where: Clock Tower
Rating: TBD, but let's start with a PG-13 for the gore of body finding
Status: Active

The Night Watch was the last thing she had wanted to do that night. After the way she'd spent the previous night, she would much rather have been at home. Worse was the fact that she could sense the temperature rising over night due to the melting of the snow; the cool spell and the snow had not lasted, and warmer weather would mean problems for herself. Even worse than that was that she had not kept her promise to L by returning to him. She had popped back into the shop for only a few moments after her meeting with Sarah, and he had not been around when she was there. The Watch was necessary, so she had headed out to patrol her area. After all, protecting everyone included protecting L, and it was the least she could offer the community as a whole. A quick glance at her journal had revealed that there was all manner of insanity going on, and vigilance was necessary. People could be not what they seemed.

In the eastern sky, or what she assumed was the eastern sky since that was where the sun came from, the sun was rising. It was like some sort of nasty fireball to her. She could not feel its rays, but she could see them, and it taunted her. It promised that the day would increase the rate of decay or her body ever so slightly. She did have Norn water in reserve, but she did not want to use it until it was necessary. Things would be getting a bit nastier before they got better. And there wasn't any promise that what she assumed to be Norn water really was. It might have been a cruel, mocking part of the experiment. She would not put it past them.

She was almost on top of the clock tower, turning towards the drug store that she called home with...L...when she noticed the pile of objects at its base. She had approached from the back, and if she hadn't been on alert from a night of successful watch, she would have missed the items completely. It was a small pile, not like it was lumber or anything, but they were clearly personal effects of some sort.

Curious as to what the items were, and if they belonged to anyone, she knelt down. She began sifting through the items. Misa? Who was Misa? And why would anyone want to advertise that they'd had a mindfuck? Then again, they were perfectly good t-shirts. Perhaps she should take one for L. She'd think about it. She passed over the wrist strap and postcard, as well as the bells. The DVDs didn't seem like they'd do anyone any good, either, though she remembered liking Full Metal Jacket at one point or another. A Bible was something that she had absolutely no use for, and two was doubly useless. The lemons, though, that was something like what she'd been looking for when she went for food for L. She remembered sailors eating citrus. She didn't know what they did, but they sounded good. She stuffed two into the pocket of her hoodie.

It was the teddy bear that caught her attention. Laura liked things that were soft, and the bear was. The fact that Logan's name was stitched into the belly was even funnier. Arching a brow, she looked into its face, moving its arms around. "So, Logan," she said. It had been a long night, and she had not spoke to anyone since Sarah the previous day. "What do you make of all this mess?"

And George set off after the woman, who had of yet to introduce herself, not that it really mattered at the moment. She didn't know what to say either once they got inside, and there was the weird chick she'd met the first or second day - the one who didn't speak and looked three shades of uncomfortable with all those people around her - and River. And both of them looked awful sad and/or sick.

George's eyes widened the more she saw them in this state, and when Laura looked back at her and Ryuzaki, George shrugged, but walked towards them anyway, sighing.

"What happened? What's going on?" She asked the both of them in a low, sweet voice. Of course she looked around her for something that might be the cause of that behavior...And found it. She didn't scream - god knew how used to death she was by now - but her heart did miss a beat and George closed her eyes, deflating, before opening them again. She had her answer.

L had started to approach Merope and River, noticing that Laura seemed to have her hands full with soothing both of the upset young women. He knew well that Laura's empathy left something to be desired when dealing with most individuals, and though he wasn't much better, he at least knew Merope, and she seemed to like him. However, he never completed two steps toward them. He stared, wide-eyed, at the sight of Light Yagami swinging slowly back and forth in front of the clock's face.

For a moment, that was all he could do. Thoughts raced through his skull, hitting the inside and ricocheting painfully back and forth. It felt like they were punching holes in his brain; he realized, after a moment, that he was sitting on the ground, his legs folding under him, seeing spots. He shook himself; with Merope looking like she'd vomit and River sobbing, this was not the time for him to faint. He'd seen things like this before... it was just a body. It just... happened to have Light's face.

Swaying slightly, still feeling unsteady, he stood, starting to climb toward the spire. He'd figure out a way when he got there, but something about seeing his friend's body in such a horrible way compelled him to try to get Light down. He had to get the noose off of his neck, at the very least... even though L knew that Light was dead, and that it was far too late to save him, there was comfort in that thought. And someone had to close his eyes. They were wide, bulging, and terrible.

Merope reacted very badly to some random woman approaching her, being untactful and then starting to cry out. Her eyes widened and she felt very uncomfortable with the situation and her stomach hitched and she gagged a third time at the scent she smelled. Merope wasn't feeling very safe, even went another person stood in front of her, she saw L out of the corner of her eye.

With very much difficulty she struggled to get up and walked much slower than she had before until she reached L. Merope couldn't very well lift herself, but she looked in his direction,"...L? Do you know him?" She said in a caring voice.

River looked from Laura to George and back again. She stood and began to slowly inch her way closer to the door. Her head was already filled faintly with the residence voices but now adding in voices of the dead she didn't know how much longer she was going to be able to sit still with so many people around her.

"Extinquished Light." she said, still quietly crying from all of the pain in her head. "Forever encased in darkness. They never lay down. Never...lay...lie..." she leaned against the wall and held herself. "Won't stop. Never stop. Why can't they understand there is nothing I can do?" she rubbed at her eyes.

"Seems we've all seen it now," she said, looking around the room. Some were reacting better than others, that was for sure. Looking to George, she nodded. "Could you take care of her?" She motioned at River with her head. "I've got to stop somebody from falling and breaking his neck. It's my job. I'm called Laura, by the way. Unfortunate that we couldn't meet on better terms." At least George had gotten a t-shirt out of it. Still, she didn't want to offend anyone, and that seemed insensitive.

Laura was right behind Merope. Why was this pale, sick looking girl going after L? She shook her head, ignoring the odd feeling in the back of her mind, and she reached for him. Grabbing his arm, she stood firmly in place. If he pulled too hard he'd yank her right along with him. Still, she could at least pull against his pull and hold him in place long enough to reason with him. "L, no," she murmured, shaking her head. Her dark blue eyes, hidden under the dark, bruised circles of her eyelids, looked into his face pleadingly. "L, we need to leave the body in place. You're a detective. You know that better than anybody. We aren't going to be able to...collect evidence and whatnot. We need to get in touch with somebody who's better at this kind of thing. Not to mention that you're probably in shock." She looked around the room, forcing a sigh out. "Most everyone is."

Her attention snapped away from him and to her shoulder as several staples fell out of the sleeve of her hoodie and hit the floor. That was inconvenient. Letting go of him, she caught her reflection in the glass. The right arm was noticeably disjointed and out of place when compared with the left. What time was it? This was more than inconvenient. She needed, very badly, to get out of there.

"Everyone, please, we can't stay here. This is a crime scene." She didn't want to leave people behind, but she needed to get out of there. Time was ticking on in the real world, and for once it was having an effect on her. "We need to get out of here. We need to get out of here and go someplace else. Does everyone here have somewhere else to be? Because, while we shouldn't be touching and moving the body, no one should be staying here with it." She looked at Merope. Would the girl make it long enough to get somewhere else?

River seemed in pain, and by what she said it was almost like the spirit of the dead guy hanging there was talking to her, or other spirits were, even. George sat beside her but didn't touch her, knowing it would probably freak her out. She nodded at Laura, in understanding, but didn't say anything. She, too, wished they hadn't met only to find a body together seconds afterwards.

She watched in slight horror mixed with compassion as Ryuzaki tried to climb up to release the body, though she shook her head in disapproval when Merope, of all people, Merope who looked sicker than sick, went after him.

"Come on down, L, Laura's right!" Apparently she called him L. Maybe he had a lot of names. But inside George felt like climbing up along with him to release his soul from there. And that posed as somewhat of an inner struggle for George. Because she knew whoever he was, his soul was still in there and he was suffering. Scratching her head, George turned to Laura.

"Laura, um...I agree with you and all but...His soul is trapped." It sounded terribly awkward, how could it not? But George was still very much defined by what she did, and she couldn't get over it.

Though he was turned away from all of them, his attention focused solely on Light's hanging body... the body that could have been him, or Laura... L heard Merope's soft, timid voice. Compassionate, even when she was so sick. It caused him to waver for a moment, glancing back, wondering what to say to her. Yes, I know him. He is a murderer, he loves me. He is my friend, he wants me to die instead. He is... He was. L had to remember to say that, now. He was, past tense. He looked away again, not wanting to see River's tears, not wanting to hear her sobs. He just wanted to go somewhere quiet, somewhere like Laura's cooler, and make this world leave him alone for a little while. It was getting to be too much. She was talking about a light, or Light, and hysterical, as if she had known him herself. Her reaction put whatever Misa's (Light's girlfriend) would have been to shame.

The world was spinning again. L couldn't have climbed higher if he'd wanted to, or stress-induced vertigo would have set in, and he'd have fallen. He felt wretched, and moreso when Laura grabbed his arm, gently but firmly, and spoke to him as one might speak to a child. About collecting evidence... as if they could, anyway! He started to tug against her, even though he knew he'd fall... but he resigned, after a moment, succumbing to her steadfast voice of reason. He was shaking as the reality of Light's death started to set in, past the light-headed desire to fix things. He nodded to show that he understood, even if he couldn't immediately climb back down. That would have to wait until his head came back together. He would not risk falling a second time just because of Light... even if it was as George said, and whatever soul that murderer might have ever had was still in his body.

Merope stared at him with worry etched on her pale visage, she thought of reaching out to him as lightly as she could but retracted. Laura and George seemed to have the whole situation taken care of and took a rather slow step back. The hysterics and drama was more than she could emotionally handle; the crying, the shouting, the begging and everything was something she'd rather not be around. Merope looked down towards the floor and shook her head.

Instead of trying to comfort L now, she would wait until later or some other time when so many wasn't around him.

Laura's orders came to no shock, but Merope wasn't able to walk around so freely. There would be no way she would leave without Rorschach, she had no intentions on leaving until he returned. Merope shook her head,"I'm going to wait for Rorschach." Rorschach had told her enough times that she could depend on him and she wasn't a burden that she'd believed it mostly.

River watched as Laura tried to persuade L to come down and then back at George when she spoke of Light's soul being trapped. Everything seemed to be rushing at River all at once. The dead inside her as well as these still alive in her anway. Too many people inside her was more than River could handle.

"Trapped. Lost. Taken away forever." she cried harder as she stood up away from the group. She began to say a handful of broken sentences in chinese as she turned to run back down the stairs and as far away from the building as possible. She hoped that the further she was from the body the quieter the dead would be.

Something inside of Laura hurt when he responded to Merope more than he did to her own gentle words. Her dark eyes flicked over to the girl. Who was she? How did she know L? But now was not the time. She needed to focus on L, on getting him away from danger, and danger was climbing up to the body when you were emotionally distraught. "L," she said softly, shaking her head. "L, please, listen to me. I don't know much, but what I do know is that I do not think you climbing up there is a good idea. Please come down. Let's go. Let's go somewhere." She kept her grip firm on him, but her shoulder was shifting against her will. When he tugged against it, it shifted noticeably, exposing the damaged tendons and sinews inside of her ripped arm. A bit of formaldehyde dripped onto the floor with a splat. She needed her cooler, and badly.

"You," she said to Merope, reluctantly keeping her hold on L. "You live here, then? I trust you. I need you to make sure that no one moves the body until someone who can safely get it down can get to it. Tell Rorschach that it's an official order from the Night Watch if you have to. Tell him Laura says it's the right thing to do." She glanced up at L. "I need to get him home. I need to get myself home." Laura wasn't partial to lying, but... "I'm not feeling well, and I don't think he is, either."

Turning to George, she canted her head. What did she mean? She'd have to ask later. There was something odd about her, and she wanted to know more. Perhaps like called to like in a way. They were united in death. "It may be so that his soul is trapped," she murmured quietly, respectfully. If there was one thing the dead had it was respect for the dead. She nodded to River, and then she watched her run away. She felt sorry for someone that sensitive. A psychic? She couldn't remember the name for someone who could talk to the dead.

"Please, L," she whispered, leaning closer to where he was climbing, hoping that only he could hear her. "Please, I need to get into my coffin. I'll carry you if you can't walk, if you need me to. But staying here isn't good for either of us."

George was getting anxious. It was one thing not to do her job when no post-its were coming up, but it was another to see a dead person right there and know his soul was trapped, suffering horrors and probably screaming for them to help him.

"It's not a matter of maybe, it is so, and I don't wanna move him, but I need to get up there and reap him." Nice way to explain things there Peanut. It was almost like she could hear Rube right now, which only made her more annoyed. And she would have climbed up there already, if L wasn't up there trying to do something stupid but entirely understandable.
