Day Two - Afternoon
Who: Shannon Rutherford and Jay
What: Chance meeting
When: mid-afternoon
Where: at the gas station
Rating: probably R for language
Status: Complete

Groaning in discomfort, Shannon rolled onto her back and opened her eyes staring up at the never endingly high ceiling. She had a kink in her neck and her hip was throbbing. Well, sleeping on her side on the floor was a bad idea; good to know for future reference.

Shannon got to her feet and stretched her arms over her head, yawning. She was filthy and felt grimy, covered in dust and debris from the floor she'd fallen asleep on the night before. Her stomach was growling, but mainly her mouth was dry; she'd finished the bottle of water from her kit just before falling asleep and now she was parched.

The journal she'd left on the front desk caught her eye and she walked over to it, ripping a piece of paper out of it and picking up the pen. In bubbly, impossibly neat handwriting - comical in its vast contrast to the words she'd written - Shannon wrote a message and reached over the desk for the box of rusty tacks she'd found while looking for something useful.

She walked out of the building and tacked the journal page to the door. It loudly proclaimed:

NO VACANCY
Fuck Off :)

Pleased that it should keep her shelter hers, Shannon headed off down the road, pulling her hair into a ponytail and using a small, thin piece she'd purposefully left out to tie it, wrapping the piece around the ponytail and tucking it under; a trick she'd learned on the Island to keep her hair out of her eyes. Up ahead, she could see the gas station and decided she might as well check there. Most gas stations had wall-fridges with sodas and beer; why not water?

The door was thankfully unlocked and there were muddy tracks all over the floor; someone had been here before, it seemed. Someones, she thought, noting the two separate pairs of tracks. Shrugging it off and looking around, she tentatively called out, "hello?" before making a beeline toward the refrigerators. "Awesome," she breathed, yanking the door open and snatching a few bottles from the open case on the shelf.

The information that Shannon had been married caused Jay to get scared half to death.

"Shit, for reals? Married? You don't look the type to get hitched!" Why did anyone do that, anyway?! Although he probably wouldn't oppose to marrying Justice, but she wasn't an option for another couple of years. Or ten.

Shannon kept talking about knowing herself and whatnot and Jay just really thought she was getting hotter by the minute. And he was getting horny. What a fucked up thing.

Again, Shannon shrugged. "It seemed like a good idea at the time, I guess. It was stupid. I'll definitely never do it again, that's for damn sure," she replied with a wrinkle of her nose.

Sighing, Shannon pushed off the refrigerator again and wrapped her arms around herself. It was a little cooler in the gas station than it had been in the art museum and she could only assume that was because neither she nor Jay had a torch on them in here.

Jay noticed she was cold again, and even though it was kind of a drag to be alone, he wasn't going to keep her there when she clearly wanted to go somewhere warmer. He still had the matches, though.

"Hey you wanna light something up so we can keep warm?" He looked around trying to find something suitable, but he had the survival instincts of a toddler on crack, so nothing came to mind.

Shannon raised an eyebrow. She was admittedly impressed. Part of her was waiting for him to make a crude remark about alternative ways to keep warm, but she was more than happy he'd proved her opinion of him wrong.

"Yeah, you have your matches? I left mine..." she said, looking around. Laughing, she shook her head. "Bet we could start a pretty bad ass fire with that," she joked, pointing to a shelf across the store filled with motor oil, lighter fluid, and other likely flammable bottles of liquid. "There's gotta be something..." she murmured to herself, walking away from him and looking around. Even if she decided to bail, he'd get cold eventually, and the least she could do was help him make a torch, since she happened to know how.

Maybe if they made a big ass fire it'd get hot enough that she'd wanna undress. With that in mind, Jay followed Shannon around and picked up the motor oil from the shelf. "This works, right?"

Maybe they needed to find a trashcan to light the fire inside it. He'd seen the hobos do it, didn't look like rocket science.

Shannon looked over at him and laughed. "Yeah, if you wanna blow the place up..." she replied, shaking her head. "No, I'd like to stay in one piece, thank you, so we'll find something else..." she murmured.

Her eyes scanned over the shelves and she frowned. Actually, the whole place was so cramped, there really wasn't anywhere to put a pit, so it'd have to be a torch, if they didn't want to burn the place down. Sighing, Shannon headed behind the counter and snatched up the stool back there. "Watch your eyes," she warned and, with a grunt, she lifted it up over her head and smashed it back down on the counter, turning her head and closing her eyes to prevent any negative consequence to her eyesight for having slammed the stool down against it.

Picking up one of the pieces, Shannon looked back at Jay. "See if you can find, uh, like those special paper towels they use on cars or whatever," she said. "You know, the ones that are extra thick or something. We can totally make a torch out of this."

Blowing the place up didn't really seem like a bad idea, thought they'd have to be away from it, of course. Jay jumped as Shannon smashed the stool on the counter.

"What the fuck lady?! A little warning? You don't just ask me to watch my eyes and don't say anything else, there was pieces flying everywhere!" Considerably freaked out, he looked around but didn't really understand what those towels Shannon talked about were. Hell, the only time he and Silent Bob ever owned a car it had been for about half an hour...

"The fuck you talkin' about?"

"That was my warning, genius," Shannon said, grinning and rolling her eyes. "God, stop being such a girl," she added. That was fun; she'd never thought she'd be able to say that to someone...

He didn't seem to know what she was talking about with the paper towels, so Shannon sighed and started looking around for them herself. "They're, like...for washing cars or something. More durable. In other words, it'll last longer...a ha!" she said with a triumphant smile as she found and seized a package of them. Shannon held them up. "These."

Jay almost took offense to Shannon calling him a girl. "I ain't no girl. You want proof, I can provide." He almost reached for his belt but then she started walking around again, so he shrugged and followed her.

"I've never washed a car in my life..." He mumbled. It was normal that he didn't know about no magical paper towels. He looked at the package she was holding, and his eyes widened. "Oooooh!" His mouth shaped up into a perfect letter O then.

"That's okay, I believe you," Shannon called over her shoulder, rolling her eyes and smiling in spite of herself. "You're a fuckin' trip, you know that?"

She looked back at him incredulously. "You think I've ever washed a car? Please. That's what the car washes are for. My brother, though..." her voice trailed off and she shrugged, setting her expression. "Anyway. Yeah, these will work with this," she said, holding up the towels and then the piece of broken stool respectively, "will make a good torch. I so wish I didn't know this," she sighed.

Jay wasn't sure what being a fucking trip meant, but whatever. He nodded. She seemed to have survival knowledge that Jay thought a rich hot girl was unlikely to have, but Jay didn't ask where she'd gotten it. He was just thankful that she did.

"It's fucking awesome that you do, though, because I was gonna set fire to the trash can." He said, pointing at the door, and shrugged.

Shannon looked back at Jay and blinked before following his finger with her eyes. "Oh, my God..." she said slowly, moving away from him again and toward the trash can. "That's so much better! Why didn't you say?" she asked, looking over her shoulder at him. "That'll make a way bigger fire and if you light it in there, it's contained; screw torches!" she all but squealed.

She was so excited, in fact, that if he wasn't so damn grungy, she'd probably kiss him.

He was no hobo, but apparently he was big on the hobo skills because he had just impressed the rich girl with his idea of setting fire to the inside of the trashcan.

"I asked you if the oil was okay, you said no, so...Whatever."

She still looked way too excited about fire in a trashcan. But who was he to rain on her parade, at least she was happy and not being a fucking downer. Not that she'd ever been, but yeah. "Light it up then." He said, amused.

"No, I know, but I didn't know there was a trashcan, Jay," Shannon replied, almost awestruck as she ripped open the package of towels and dropped them into the can.

She looked back at him and raised her eyebrows. "Can you grab the pieces of the stool? That'll help," she added, "and yeah, on second thought, bring over some of the motor oil," she finished as she dropped her own piece of the broken stool into the trash can.

"Will do!" He replied excitedly and went to fetch the stuff Shannon had asked for. Two cans of motor oil under his arm and the whole of the stool over his shoulder, Jay walked over to her and the trashcan and deposited the stool in it with a loud thumping noise.

He opened up one of the cans, and glanced over at Shannon, looking for the approval to squeeze its contents into the trashcan as well.

Shannon laughed at the question on his expression. She hadn't ever remembered being looked at like that before. It was sort of surreal, actually. "Have at it," she replied with a smile, giving a vague hand gesture toward the trashcan.

"Actually, just the one," Shannon decided at the same time as she'd said it. "Because I've never done this before and I'm so not in the mood for third degree burns. I doubt you are, either..." she added.

Jay nodded and squeezed the whole content of the can into the trashcan. Finally, some fucking warmth. He decided to keep the second can at arm's reach just in case, and stepped back. Shannon seemed like she knew her fire, and he didn't have a lighter or matches, so...

"Go ahead, light it up. Let's get some flame!" He told her excitedly.

Shannon held a hand out to him. "Give me your matches," she replied.

She was more than ready to light up that thing and warm up. Her arms and legs were covered in goosebumps and her clothes were still a little damp from the day before, not to mention the walk over here. The sooner they got that thing going, the sooner she'd be warm and maybe even dry again.

Jay looked around him, at himself, and then at Shannon. "What matches?" He usually had matches, or a lighter, but not right now. Everything he usually had on him had disappeared, apparently.

"Oh, fuck, don't tell me we've got nothing to light this shit with!" Jay almost pouted, and turned around to look at the shelves. At a normal convenience store they sold Bic lighters, at least.

"'What matches?!'" Shannon repeated, deflating completely. "Jay, I can't light a fire without matches!"

She raised a hand to her forehead and then dropped down to sit on the floor, pulling her knees up to her chest and wrapping her arm around them. So much for that, then...

Jay shrugged, but then he remembered the soggy ones. "Ooooh, right." He pulled them from the box and handed them to her. "They're still wet. Sorry."

It was kind of funny that she seemed ready to give up and pout away in the cold. Spoiled bitches, he thought, shaking his head - though Shannon wasn't even one of the worst, so far.

Pouting, Shannon sighed as she took the soggy matches from Jay. "They won't ignite until they dry out...I wasted like six matches trying last night," she said with a frown.

"God, what the fuck, who gives out wet matches anyway?!" she grumped. "A lighter would've been fuckin' nice, you know? Stupid survival kits are a joke."

Jay sighed and sat by Shannon's side. "This is some fucked up shit right here. It's like whoever put us here, is doing it to fuck with us. I don't think they want us to survive." He took one match from Shannon's hand and started blowing it dry. Maybe this would work, just...In a while.

"Fucking bullshit..." He muttered between blows.

Shannon glanced over at Jay when he sat down and then she rested her chin on her knees before realizing that maybe it was a better idea that she didn't sit like that in a skirt. She straightened her legs and leaned back, hands on the floor just behind herself. "I...hate that I agree with you," she admitted defeatedly. "I don't think you're wrong. I think, in fact, you're probably right on the money..."

At least Jay didn't seem to be giving up on the matches, drying to blow on one to dry it. She had to give him credit for that, at least; it was more than she was doing by sitting there moping.

After what felt like forever of blowing the match dry, he handed it to Shannon, emotionless.

"Try this one." He asked her, as he felt his eyes kind of heavy. He hadn't slept for shit the previous night, and unless he could find some blankets, he wouldn't tonight either. "Hey, by the way, do you have anything that could work for a bed, like blankets, sheets, pillows? Any of that shit?"
