Day Two - Afternoon
Who: Shannon Rutherford and Jay
What: Chance meeting
When: mid-afternoon
Where: at the gas station
Rating: probably R for language
Status: Complete

Groaning in discomfort, Shannon rolled onto her back and opened her eyes staring up at the never endingly high ceiling. She had a kink in her neck and her hip was throbbing. Well, sleeping on her side on the floor was a bad idea; good to know for future reference.

Shannon got to her feet and stretched her arms over her head, yawning. She was filthy and felt grimy, covered in dust and debris from the floor she'd fallen asleep on the night before. Her stomach was growling, but mainly her mouth was dry; she'd finished the bottle of water from her kit just before falling asleep and now she was parched.

The journal she'd left on the front desk caught her eye and she walked over to it, ripping a piece of paper out of it and picking up the pen. In bubbly, impossibly neat handwriting - comical in its vast contrast to the words she'd written - Shannon wrote a message and reached over the desk for the box of rusty tacks she'd found while looking for something useful.

She walked out of the building and tacked the journal page to the door. It loudly proclaimed:

NO VACANCY
Fuck Off :)

Pleased that it should keep her shelter hers, Shannon headed off down the road, pulling her hair into a ponytail and using a small, thin piece she'd purposefully left out to tie it, wrapping the piece around the ponytail and tucking it under; a trick she'd learned on the Island to keep her hair out of her eyes. Up ahead, she could see the gas station and decided she might as well check there. Most gas stations had wall-fridges with sodas and beer; why not water?

The door was thankfully unlocked and there were muddy tracks all over the floor; someone had been here before, it seemed. Someones, she thought, noting the two separate pairs of tracks. Shrugging it off and looking around, she tentatively called out, "hello?" before making a beeline toward the refrigerators. "Awesome," she breathed, yanking the door open and snatching a few bottles from the open case on the shelf.

Actually, being alone really fucking sucked. Jay wasn't used to it, and he didn't wanna be. He was used to talking to a lot of people everyday, even if most of what he said was bullshit, and most people he talked to were customers. Hell he didn't even have any blunt to sell, and walking around without a wall to stand against was just bullshit.

Finally, he saw a place that looked like a gas station. And it was one. And it had a convenience store. Jay almost grinned with glee, but before he could stand against the wall, he needed something to drink, and maybe to eat, too. He didn't remember the last time he'd eaten and he had the munchies like a motherfucker. He pushed the door to get it, and looked around, taking slow steps. It seemed empty.

Jay nearly ran towards the refrigerators and started snatching stuff away; then, he looked to his right. This hot - as fuck! - blonde chick was there, too.

"'Sup, baby?" He greeted her, with a smug smile and a nod.

Shannon jumped and felt her heart nearly pound out of her chest at the sound of someone else practically rushing the refrigerator. Her instinctive thought was that the Others finally found her and she shrunk back slowly, because they didn't seem to notice her at first.

But then they - he - turned and she froze. ...yeah probably not an Other, she thought, wrinkling her nose in distaste as she looked him up and down. His hair was even longer than hers and judging by his clothes, he'd missed the memo that announced the end of the nineties grunge era, like, ten years ago.

"Hi," she replied, uncomfortable under his gaze although she wasn't entirely sure why. Shannon held up her water bottles. "I'll just...leave you to it, then," she said awkwardly, backing away a few more steps, planning to walk backward until he was out of her sight and then turn her back, just to be on the safe side.

Awesome boobage. Nice face, too. Jay was kind of glad that so far, he'd been lucky with the chicks he'd seen. He frowned when she seemed like she was leaving, and as he dropped a few cans of whatever in his pockets, he turned to her.

"Hey wait a second! You're alone, I'm alone, this place is fucking freaky and I don't know why you're running off, but we should stick together!" Literally. But that, Jay didn't say. "I'm not gonna eat you..." He added, looking down at his own shoes.

Stopping again, Shannon furrowed her brow and shifted her weight, tilting her chin upward to force an image of confidence she no longer actually possessed - and hadn't for a long while. "I'm not alone," she lied.

But he was looking down at his shoes, so clearly he less sure of himself than anyone who could potentially be a threat, so she shifted her weight from one foot to the other and stayed put for the moment. She hadn't remembered seeing him on the flight - she'd have noticed that get up, for sure - but after having met George and talking to Laura and Sam on the journals, Shannon was fast learning that this wasn't really about the Others or the Island. Strange how the one thing she hated and feared the most had settled itself into her comfort zone out of habit.

That was when she noticed the snacks he had - she hadn't even noticed that there was food there at all - and she licked her lips, looking back up at him. "Where'd you get that?" she asked, nodding toward the food. She hadn't really looked, but maybe he'd had it when he came in, in which case it would behoove her to be nice to him, at least until he felt like sharing.

Jay didn't see anyone else. But maybe she'd made the drink run all on her own to bring it back to her friends. In any case, she hadn't left yet, which was probably a good sign. Maybe she could go stand with him outside, though she had nothing to do with Silent Bob where looks were concerned; and the stuff she had said wasn't deep, either. But at least she was someone. Someone with a pussy.

He looked down at his hands, and back up at her, shrugging. "Right here, what, you didn't see?" He motioned for the shelves opposite the refrigerators.

Shannon shook her head and looked over. Gross, all candy bars and potato chips... Man, she was gonna get fat if she had to live off that kind of stuff. "I was just looking for water," she replied, approaching the shelf and squatting down in front of it to look over the contents on the bottom shelf. Protein bars, Slim Fast bars, energy bars..."Bingo," she said with a grin, grabbing the four granola bars out of their box and shoving them into the pocket of her sweater.

"Is there anything else?" she asked as she smoothed her skirt down and stood again. She all but backed into the shelf itself when she realized just how close to him she was. No, no, better to keep her distance. He seemed like the average guy and maybe he was even one of them who'd woken up in the woods, but she couldn't know for sure and she wasn't taking her chances. The Others were one thing; they'd known that the Others were there. This was different...clearly someone had put them there, but who, exactly, was still a mystery.

Of course she'd gone for the healthy girly stuff. She'd only be hungry again in a little while, as far as Jay was concerned, but he didn't really give a shit.

He looked at the shelves again and shrugged. "Don't look it." Jay noticed she seemed to be avoiding close contact. Maybe she had some disease, or something. Better to find out before he tried anything. But maybe later. Right now, Jay was much more focused on opening a pack of chips and eating them. He put a bunch of them in his mouth and chewed down, rolling his eyes with pleasure as his stomach acknowledged he was actually eating something. "So," He started, still chewing. "You wake up in the woods too?"

Shannon arched an eyebrow at the guy, trying not to smirk with amusement as the potato chips he'd just started eating seemed to give him a nearly orgasmic experience. To be fair, they did look really good...

Shrugging and figuring there was really nowhere else she had to be and he didn't seem threatening in any way, Shannon leaned back against the shelf and pulled out one of the granola bars, ripping its wrapper open and taking a bite. Hovering a hand over her mouth while she chewed, Shannon nodded.

"Yeah, you too, huh?" she asked, swallowing the bite. "There's a big glass wall...my guess is its all the way around," she added, taking another bite and eying him, sizing him up. A little scrawny, but maybe he was stronger than he looked and he'd be able to break it...if she played her cards right.

She seemed to be relaxing, which meant good news for Jay. Maybe in a while she'd be willing to go somewhere...He hoped. Jay gave her a wide smile, but in his mind the thing she was talking about with the glass and whatnot didn't really register.

Finally, he arched his eyebrows. "Glass wall where? In the woods?!" If she was nuts, that probably meant she was easier than if she wasn't. Things were looking up.

Standing inside a convenience store talking and munching on snacks was definitely a new thing for Jay. He was still leaning against the side of the refrigerator, so that was familiar, at least.

Jay raised one eyebrow, and then both. "Yeaahhh!" He exclaimed in awe. It was possible, after all. "So we're, like, connected? What the fuck is this shit?!"

He was a little more aggravated this time around. And it was justified; after all, he had no idea where he was or what he was doing and now other people's handwritten stuff was coming up on his journal. Sighing in frustration, he snagged another twinkie from the shelf and ripped the wrapper open unceremoniously. Taking a bite that was almost the whole thing at once, he realized she hadn't said her name. "What's you called, anyway?"

"I guess you could say so," Shannon agreed reluctantly. She didn't particularly like the idea of being "connected" with any of these people, especially the ones she hadn't even met in person.

Shannon tried hard not to look as disgusted by the way he inhaled the Twinkie as she felt. "Shannon..." she said, drawing out the word slowly and pointing to her name on the page before handing back his pen. "Have you done any exploring? Anything interesting around here? I've seen a few buildings but they all look like shit," she added.

Jay made a face. Being connected to some dude felt kind of gay, and as much as he liked connection with the ladies, it wasn't for them to pour out their heart and feelings, either. Which, last time he'd checked, was what a journal was for, mostly.

"No. I just made my way up from the woods, slept in the church, and then woke up very fucking hungry and came here." Why would he wanna explore anything with an empty stomach, anyway?

"There's a church?" Shannon asked, raising an eyebrow. "I must've missed it or been on a different road..." she mused. Shannon had seen the nasty ass barn with the disgusting moldy couches stuffed inside it, a shabby clock tower, a boarded up gymnasium and an abandoned pharmacy/liquor store, and a boarded up post office on her way from the woods to the art museum, but not a church.

She knew the feeling, though. "I woke up thirsty as hell," she agreed. She purposefully didn't share where she was staying. Mainly because she didn't want any roommates. Especially unfamiliar male ones.

Jay nodded. "Yeah, yeah." There was a whole bunch of shitty buildings that he hadn't bothered to get into, as well. The church just seemed to mean places to lie down, so it felt like the best choice.

"I still have some of the water from that shitty box I woke up with. Do you have one too?" He asked, wondering if it was also a general thing to have a shitty survival kit.

He looked around. "Maaan we gotta get out of this place. I have shit to do!" well, he did, going by his concept of shit to do.

Shannon gave a facial shrug and then sighed, looking away from him and back at the shelves as she leaned back against the refrigerator and tried the Pepsi again, this time taking it slower.

"I finished mine last night," she replied. "Yeah, socks and Tic-Tacs, what the hell is that about?" she grumped. "The matches came in handy, at least."

She gave Jay a sidelong glance when he said he had things to do. Like what? Smoke a joint from the smell of you... she thought, but said nothing. "Yeah I was kinda fuckin' busy before I woke up here, too," she replied instead.

Jay went through the contents of the box in his mind, shaking his head in disappointment a little bit more at each item. "I didn't use mine, they were kind of wet anyway."

He turned around dramatically to look outside, though he was nowhere near the windows. "Someone's fucking with us, man, some little bitch-ass fucker kidnapped us. I hope it's not the apes."

Noticing her sidelong glance, Jay gave her one of his own, but didn't say anything. "That Sam dude you were talking about. Is he trying to find a way to leave this place?"

"You must've froze your ass off last night," Shannon thought aloud when he said he hadn't used his matches. Hadn't he even tried to let the dry out? Man, in a weird way, he was reminding her of herself back on Craphole Island; before she'd accepted that they weren't going anywhere anytime soon.

Shannon wasn't going to disagree with him when he said that someone was fucking with them and that they'd been kidnapped, because she completely agreed. Although, what she and this guy had in common was beyond her and didn't kidnappers and serial killers have, like, patterns they followed? He was blond...and from behind he'd looked like a girl. Maybe that was it? "Apes...?"

"Yeah, I think so," she replied in reference to Sam. "From the sounds of him, he's one of those take-charge types and more power to him. Better him than me."

Shrugging, Shannon took another drink of water. "It's easy to tell by the way they look at me." She paused and looked over at him, raising an eyebrow and gave a sedate smile that said she wasn't unaware of the probable line of thought he was having.

"Well yeah, I know what I like better than anyone else ever would," she replied casually, shrugging. "And I've been married; it's lame," she added as an afterthought.

The information that Shannon had been married caused Jay to get scared half to death.

"Shit, for reals? Married? You don't look the type to get hitched!" Why did anyone do that, anyway?! Although he probably wouldn't oppose to marrying Justice, but she wasn't an option for another couple of years. Or ten.

Shannon kept talking about knowing herself and whatnot and Jay just really thought she was getting hotter by the minute. And he was getting horny. What a fucked up thing.

Again, Shannon shrugged. "It seemed like a good idea at the time, I guess. It was stupid. I'll definitely never do it again, that's for damn sure," she replied with a wrinkle of her nose.

Sighing, Shannon pushed off the refrigerator again and wrapped her arms around herself. It was a little cooler in the gas station than it had been in the art museum and she could only assume that was because neither she nor Jay had a torch on them in here.

Jay noticed she was cold again, and even though it was kind of a drag to be alone, he wasn't going to keep her there when she clearly wanted to go somewhere warmer. He still had the matches, though.

"Hey you wanna light something up so we can keep warm?" He looked around trying to find something suitable, but he had the survival instincts of a toddler on crack, so nothing came to mind.

Shannon raised an eyebrow. She was admittedly impressed. Part of her was waiting for him to make a crude remark about alternative ways to keep warm, but she was more than happy he'd proved her opinion of him wrong.

"Yeah, you have your matches? I left mine..." she said, looking around. Laughing, she shook her head. "Bet we could start a pretty bad ass fire with that," she joked, pointing to a shelf across the store filled with motor oil, lighter fluid, and other likely flammable bottles of liquid. "There's gotta be something..." she murmured to herself, walking away from him and looking around. Even if she decided to bail, he'd get cold eventually, and the least she could do was help him make a torch, since she happened to know how.

Maybe if they made a big ass fire it'd get hot enough that she'd wanna undress. With that in mind, Jay followed Shannon around and picked up the motor oil from the shelf. "This works, right?"

Maybe they needed to find a trashcan to light the fire inside it. He'd seen the hobos do it, didn't look like rocket science.

Shannon looked over at him and laughed. "Yeah, if you wanna blow the place up..." she replied, shaking her head. "No, I'd like to stay in one piece, thank you, so we'll find something else..." she murmured.

Her eyes scanned over the shelves and she frowned. Actually, the whole place was so cramped, there really wasn't anywhere to put a pit, so it'd have to be a torch, if they didn't want to burn the place down. Sighing, Shannon headed behind the counter and snatched up the stool back there. "Watch your eyes," she warned and, with a grunt, she lifted it up over her head and smashed it back down on the counter, turning her head and closing her eyes to prevent any negative consequence to her eyesight for having slammed the stool down against it.

Picking up one of the pieces, Shannon looked back at Jay. "See if you can find, uh, like those special paper towels they use on cars or whatever," she said. "You know, the ones that are extra thick or something. We can totally make a torch out of this."

Blowing the place up didn't really seem like a bad idea, thought they'd have to be away from it, of course. Jay jumped as Shannon smashed the stool on the counter.

"What the fuck lady?! A little warning? You don't just ask me to watch my eyes and don't say anything else, there was pieces flying everywhere!" Considerably freaked out, he looked around but didn't really understand what those towels Shannon talked about were. Hell, the only time he and Silent Bob ever owned a car it had been for about half an hour...

"The fuck you talkin' about?"
