Day Two - Afternoon
Who: Shannon Rutherford and Jay
What: Chance meeting
When: mid-afternoon
Where: at the gas station
Rating: probably R for language
Status: Complete

Groaning in discomfort, Shannon rolled onto her back and opened her eyes staring up at the never endingly high ceiling. She had a kink in her neck and her hip was throbbing. Well, sleeping on her side on the floor was a bad idea; good to know for future reference.

Shannon got to her feet and stretched her arms over her head, yawning. She was filthy and felt grimy, covered in dust and debris from the floor she'd fallen asleep on the night before. Her stomach was growling, but mainly her mouth was dry; she'd finished the bottle of water from her kit just before falling asleep and now she was parched.

The journal she'd left on the front desk caught her eye and she walked over to it, ripping a piece of paper out of it and picking up the pen. In bubbly, impossibly neat handwriting - comical in its vast contrast to the words she'd written - Shannon wrote a message and reached over the desk for the box of rusty tacks she'd found while looking for something useful.

She walked out of the building and tacked the journal page to the door. It loudly proclaimed:

NO VACANCY
Fuck Off :)

Pleased that it should keep her shelter hers, Shannon headed off down the road, pulling her hair into a ponytail and using a small, thin piece she'd purposefully left out to tie it, wrapping the piece around the ponytail and tucking it under; a trick she'd learned on the Island to keep her hair out of her eyes. Up ahead, she could see the gas station and decided she might as well check there. Most gas stations had wall-fridges with sodas and beer; why not water?

The door was thankfully unlocked and there were muddy tracks all over the floor; someone had been here before, it seemed. Someones, she thought, noting the two separate pairs of tracks. Shrugging it off and looking around, she tentatively called out, "hello?" before making a beeline toward the refrigerators. "Awesome," she breathed, yanking the door open and snatching a few bottles from the open case on the shelf.

Shannon shook her head and looked over. Gross, all candy bars and potato chips... Man, she was gonna get fat if she had to live off that kind of stuff. "I was just looking for water," she replied, approaching the shelf and squatting down in front of it to look over the contents on the bottom shelf. Protein bars, Slim Fast bars, energy bars..."Bingo," she said with a grin, grabbing the four granola bars out of their box and shoving them into the pocket of her sweater.

"Is there anything else?" she asked as she smoothed her skirt down and stood again. She all but backed into the shelf itself when she realized just how close to him she was. No, no, better to keep her distance. He seemed like the average guy and maybe he was even one of them who'd woken up in the woods, but she couldn't know for sure and she wasn't taking her chances. The Others were one thing; they'd known that the Others were there. This was different...clearly someone had put them there, but who, exactly, was still a mystery.

Of course she'd gone for the healthy girly stuff. She'd only be hungry again in a little while, as far as Jay was concerned, but he didn't really give a shit.

He looked at the shelves again and shrugged. "Don't look it." Jay noticed she seemed to be avoiding close contact. Maybe she had some disease, or something. Better to find out before he tried anything. But maybe later. Right now, Jay was much more focused on opening a pack of chips and eating them. He put a bunch of them in his mouth and chewed down, rolling his eyes with pleasure as his stomach acknowledged he was actually eating something. "So," He started, still chewing. "You wake up in the woods too?"

Shannon arched an eyebrow at the guy, trying not to smirk with amusement as the potato chips he'd just started eating seemed to give him a nearly orgasmic experience. To be fair, they did look really good...

Shrugging and figuring there was really nowhere else she had to be and he didn't seem threatening in any way, Shannon leaned back against the shelf and pulled out one of the granola bars, ripping its wrapper open and taking a bite. Hovering a hand over her mouth while she chewed, Shannon nodded.

"Yeah, you too, huh?" she asked, swallowing the bite. "There's a big glass wall...my guess is its all the way around," she added, taking another bite and eying him, sizing him up. A little scrawny, but maybe he was stronger than he looked and he'd be able to break it...if she played her cards right.

She seemed to be relaxing, which meant good news for Jay. Maybe in a while she'd be willing to go somewhere...He hoped. Jay gave her a wide smile, but in his mind the thing she was talking about with the glass and whatnot didn't really register.

Finally, he arched his eyebrows. "Glass wall where? In the woods?!" If she was nuts, that probably meant she was easier than if she wasn't. Things were looking up.

Standing inside a convenience store talking and munching on snacks was definitely a new thing for Jay. He was still leaning against the side of the refrigerator, so that was familiar, at least.

"Yeah," Shannon confirmed, taking another bite. "I got lost looking for a place to stay," she added. "Ran into a glass wall. Two different places."

Okay, it had to be said. "You realize the grunge era has been over for, like, ever, right?" she finally asked, her eyes roaming over him up and down again.

Jay looked away. This didn't make sense at all. Glass walls in the middle of the woods, waking up with a box full of useless shit, creepy, old places... What the fuck was going on, anyhow? He'd find out later. Now, he had to eat.

Jay tilted his head a tiny bit, screwing up his brow. "The what now?" She was definitely crazy. Now she was talking gibberish.

Shannon raised her eyebrows. "The grunge era?" she asked and motioned toward his wardrobe. "That died in, like, I don't know, like, 1993 or something," she said and laughed a little in spite of herself.

All right, not the best looking and clearly not the brightest bulb, but this guy wasn't so bad. He wasn't hitting on her, at least. That already ranked him over the likes of guys like Charlie Pace. That was a plus in any case.

"Did you wake up by yourself?" she asked suddenly. She wondered just how many people were roaming around here. Sam had said he wanted to find out and maybe she could make herself useful by helping compile a list. "What's your name, anyway?"

Jay looked down at himself, still not really getting what she was trying to say. "The fuck's wrong with what I'm wearing, starlet?" In his opinion, nothing was. Justice had never said anything, and all.

"No, I had two girls nearby." He winked. What he was implying had totally not happened, but that didn't really matter right now. "Jay." None of the mac daddy of Jersey for now...somehow Jay didn't really feel like himself.

"Nothing," Shannon laughed, shaking her head. "You just look like you fell out of an episode of I Love the 90s or something," she added with a shrug, taking a drink. "Whatever floats your boat, I guess."

At the wink, Shannon raised her eyebrows at him again, this time dubiously. Yeah, right, buddy, the look said. "Did you catch their names?" she asked, making a mental note of his to give to Sam later.

Jay arched an eyebrow as he took another bite out of his twinkie. "You look like you'd look better naked, but I'm not complaining." Did that even make sense? Who cared, either way?

Dark and nice jugs & Smiley with nice jugs? "Uhm...No." They'd probably said it at some point, but Jay couldn't remember. "Whaddaya want from me, I haven't eaten in forever!"

Furrowing her brow, Shannon just stared at him. Not even going there with you, pal, she thought, sighing. "Right..." she said slowly.

With a nod, Shannon stood up straight again, eying the sodas behind him in the refrigerator. She hadn't had a Diet Pepsi in so long, she couldn't even remember. Part of her wondered if it would even taste good to her after all that time. "Honey, you are complaining to the wrong person about not having eaten in forever. I've been living on passion fruit and practically raw fish for months," she replied. "I was just asking because some guy on the journals was asking and I thought I'd help him out," she added by way of explanation, shrugging.

"Move over," she said more than asked as she approached him, reaching for the refrigerator door. That Diet Pepsi was all but calling her name, now, the longer she stared at it.

Well, it had been worth a try. She looked stuck-up anyway. Suddenly, though, she looked in his direction as though she was getting ready to eat him. But she still spoke about something else, about raw fish and five months. "Well at least you've eaten!" He commented. Might not be the best, but it was something.

"Yeah what is the deal with these things, they really journals? We're supposed to write on them?" He asked, whipping his own journal from one of his pockets. When he opened it, he found it was already written on in different handwritings. "Oooh, what the shit?!"

Jay practically fell over as she nearly pushed him away to get to the Pepsi. So that's what it was. Weird shit, staring longingly at a beverage.

"Yeah, but when you have to eat the same thing over and over and over, you stop wanting it and eventually, you stop eating all together," Shannon sighed.

She pulled the refrigerator open once he was clear of the door and snatched up a Diet Pepsi, twisting off the cap and immediately taking a drink. Rather than actually enjoy it, the carbonation she'd forgotten to take into account had her sputtering and gasping for air when it fizzed right up her nose. Coughing, Shannon leaned against the refrigerator next to Jay, trying to catch her breath. "Shit, I forgot..." she mumbled to herself.

When she'd regained her composure, she looked over at him. "Yeah, I guess so...I know, it's really weird, you can see everything people write," she said, leaning to look over his shoulder. She pointed. "That's mine." Then, she pointed to another page. "Sam. It's so weird."

Jay shrugged. "I don't know. I eat at Mooby's almost every day and I love it." Different strokes, he supposed. She seemed way high maintenance, too.
When she started coughing because of the carbon, Jay couldn't help laughing. Apparently the "fssst" noise it had made when she had opened the bottle didn't tip her off.

"I've seen some freaky shit, but not this type of freaky shit. Is this really you?" Of course he was still suspicious. Even the Internet was still hard to understand, let alone a handwritten journal, with no cables at all.

Rubbing her nose, as it was still smarting from the fizz, Shannon furrowed her brow. "I haven't had anything to drink other than water in almost a year. First I was on a diet because I wanted to be and then...because I had no choice," she explained, annoyed with herself for blushing in embarrassment at her own faux pas.

"Honest to God," she promised. "You still have the pen that came with it? I'll show you," she offered. "I know it sounds crazy, believe me. I thought I was insane when I first saw someone else's handwriting in my journal, but it's the real deal, I swear."

Shannon wasn't entirely sure why she felt so defensive about it, but she did.

Jay, still chuckling, made a dismissive hand gesture in her direction, hoping she would stop worrying.

He snatched the pen away from his back pocket and handed it to her. "Here." This, he wanted to see. God was one thing, but this was kind of another. He didn't know why, but it was more unbelievable.

Shannon took the pen from him and leaned a little further over, scrawling her name on one of the margins of the page on which her second entry in the journal showed up. "See?" she asked. "Same handwriting."

She wondered if that'd be enough to prove herself. If not, she supposed she could take him back to the art museum and write him a note in her journal and have him read it from his.
