Day One - Night-time
Who: Andy Gallagher & Luna Lovegood
What: Heading back to shelter for the night
When: 10:00 pm
Where: The Church
Rating: PG-13 for language
Status: Complete

By the time Andy and Luna were on their way back to the church for the night, the sun had long since gone down and the rain was coming down in buckets, thunder rumbling and lightning brightening the sky in random splashes of blue-white. They'd had to take it a lot slower than he'd hoped they could've and he thanked whatever powers that he'd found a poncho in the thrift shop earlier. He'd wrapped a bunch of clothes that he and Luna had found in it and at least those would be dry.

It was a lot harder, too, to navigate the dirt road in the dark with only the spurts of lightning in the distance as a guide. By the time they'd gotten where he thought was close to the cemetary, Andy had pulled his coat off and, shivering, held it over he and Luna's heads.

"Okay, this is gonna be s-s-s-s-seriously b-b-balls, but we're gonna need to build a f-f-fire," he managed through chattering teeth. "Easy on the s-s-steps," he added when he nearly faceplanted himself on them on his way up to the church door.

When he was up them, he held a hand out to Luna to help her, figuring with the mud everywhere and the rain still pouring down, her sandals would have her slipping and sliding all over the place. He was freezing and soaked to the bone, not to mention exhausted; she must be worse off in that thin little dress of hers. His hoodie must weigh a hundred pounds to her by now...

It was with interest that she watched him bash the chair against what she still thought of as a not entirely of-the-side-of-light object. Something about it just made her suspicious and wanting to avoid it like it was a naked Death Eater on fire. With contagious typhoid. Personally she could not quite understand what purpose smashing the chair against it was, but hearing him mutter (she had stepped quite close a moment later, before stepping away again), she understood.

Kindling, that was a clever way to achieve it.

"O-okay," she shivered out, "Y-you sur-re you d-don't nee-d a-ssist-ance?" Andy insisted, and she went off to peel herself out of the white dress that had looked so lovely earlier in the day. She had been happily at work before disappearing, and had just dropped off her latest article to the printer. Ice cream had been her goal, as it had been summer last she checked. Now it definitely did not seem like summer, not anymore.

Her dress made a wet slapping sound as she dropped it to the ground, after pulling it up and over her head. The clothes she had picked out, a small boy's cotton shirt that had pictures of odd characters labeled 'X-Men' on the front, a pair of soft cotton pants and dry underthings. Luna quickly shed her wet pink and silver lingerie and replaced them with the new (relatively) and drier set. The underwear had actually been in a small see through package, unopened. Which was definitely a good concept, she was not sure she would want to wear someone's previously worn knickers.

The fire lit just as she finished putting on a pair of socks. Which were, to her amusement, pretty much identical to Wizarding versions. Although they seemed a bit rougher, and the little bunnies on the white cotton did not hop about. A sad thing.

"I am now fully clothed!" she called back, raising her voice for the first time that day. Even as she collected her wet things and hung them over the back of the far pew, closest to the fire that was blazing merrily away.

As Andy stood in the back room, waiting for Luna to get dressed, he let his mind wander. If the Yellow-Eyed demon hadn't put him here - and he was fairly sure that wasn't the case, since he and Sam seemed to be the only Psychic Kids hanging around - then who had? Or, for that matter maybe, what? The idea of thinking 'what' just as easily as 'who' was almost maddening, considering the fact that a few days ago, Andy lived under the protective bubble of the belief that there were no such thing as ghosts and goblins; demons and boogeymen. He'd been wrong. The realization was disquieting, at best.

Another cold chill made him shudder and Andy dropped the alter cloths, stripping off his wet jeans with a grunt of effort...and a tumble to the floor when they stuck and he lost his balance. Hopefully, she hadn't heard. While he was down there, though, he kicked off the wet jeans and picked them up, wringing them out away from the alter cloths. They were still overly heavy and sopping wet, because denim was far more difficult to wring out than he'd imagined it would be.

The boxer shorts came next and Andy repeated the process. He hadn't found any underwear for him still in the packaging like Luna had for herself, but he figured commando wouldn't suck too badly under the baggy flannel sleep pants he'd found. Luna would never know anyway, so long as he kept his mind out of the gutter.

Andy picked up one of the alter cloths and wrapped it around himself like a towel and slung the other over his bare shoulder before bending to pick up his wet clothes, just in time for Luna to announce that she was dressed. "Good timing," he said to himself before coming out.

"Your turn," he said, whirling a finger in the air, motioning for Luna to turn her back as he walked past her and took a white undershirt and the sleep pants out of the poncho.

When he was satisfied that she wasn't looking - even if normally, he wouldn't have cared, but hello, shrinkage - Andy slung both alter cloths over the back of a pew and pulled the cotton pants on first, quickly following up by pulling the drawstrings tighter and tying them. "All right," he said as he pulled the undershirt over his head and picked up the alter cloths again.

Andy walked past Luna again and laid the cloth he'd wrapped himself in on the floor, going out of his way to make sure that he had it laying so that the part he'd been touching directly was face down. Then, he looked back at Luna as he opened the other. Giving her a weak smile, he approached her and wrapped it around her. "Not exactly a blanket, but it's better than nothing, huh?" he asked sheepishly. "I'm gonna lay down on the floor, close to the fire. On that one," he added, gesturing to the other cloth. "You're welcome to join me if you want, but I figured I'd give you the extra in case you'd rather not," he explained.

While she had heard a loud thud coming from the other room, Luna did not immediately rush in that direction for one of two reasons. One, because she did not think he would be particularly pleased if she burst in on him while she was changing. And two, because when bodies started falling for less than healthy reasons, you only rushed in when you had a plan, back up, and your wand at the ready.

Not much managed to actually make her nervous, to get under her skin. But the random prospect that Death Eaters might be involved, no matter the fact that none of them dared to step out of line while still being watched...

Her pronouncement of her state of dress had been made at the edges of her standing far from the fire. If only because she was close to the door, prepared to flee if the situation called for it. "You're alive," she announced with relief, her fingers having tangled themselves in the bottom of her long hair without her express permission. Silvery blue eyes were quite wide, seeming even bigger than normal in her face, as she realized that it was likely just something inane. And nothing to do with frightening men in masks.

Immediately she did as he asked, and turned around to face the doors to the house of the Christian God. Who apparently was out for at least the night. When he gave the word, she turned around, wanting to move back towards the fire. Dry her clothes might be, but the fire was so tempting.

She was surprised when he wrapped one of the cloths he carried around her, and was silent for a moment, before acting. On impulse she moved forward to hug him. And then was gone again within a few seconds. Luna Lovegood was not the tyype to really attract friends, at least not in her experience. The few she could count as such now were ones she had had to prove herself to (at least in their eyes) many times over before gaining any sort of acceptance. It was nice that someone was...nice to her. Without battles, without being on the run, even if the circumstances were not exactly 'of the norm' now.

"One bed would be fine," she answered, meaning no more than what she said. "Warmth would be easier then." Conservation of heat was always important in the cold, and they were rather lacking in layers and heating charms.

Andy gave Luna a funny look and smiled awkwardly. "Of course I'm alive..." he replied. "Oh!" he exclaimed, realizing that she must've heard him falling over. "I tripped over my jeans trying to take them off," he explained. "I didn't mean to scare you...I didn't think you'd hear or I'd have called out to let you know I was okay," he added apologetically.

Part of him wondered if she'd thought he'd been had by the Death Eaters she'd talked about. The ones that killed and tortured Muggles, which, regardless of what Luna thought, Andy felt he was.

He blinked, a little surprised, when Luna hugged him, but before he could reciprocate it, she'd pulled away and Andy felt a little cheated by himself for not having reacted sooner. "What was that for...?" he asked. Andy couldn't actually remember the last time he'd gotten a hug, especially an unexpected one like that.

When she said that warmth would be easier if they shared a bed, Andy was glad. He wholeheartedly agreed. He got down on the floor and then laid down on the cloth. It was probably the least comfortable place Andy had ever decided to sleep and that was saying a lot considering the blur of his late teens and earlier twenties. "Are you warm enough?" he asked. "Because I mean..." he trailed off and gave her a sheepish look. "I dunno if it'd be crossing an understood boundary to suggest using each other's body heat until the heat from the fire actually gets to us down here, but..." Again, he let his voice trail off. He didn't want to push his luck.

Constant Vigilance. A tenet that had mostly worn away over the years, completely without notice, apparently. Naturally she had stopped checking the DA coin, except for once in a rare while. Just in case. Death Eaters were the past for nearly everyone in the Wizarding world, they all wanted to forget that they ever existed. While still being unable to. Thankfully, for the most part, the instinct to jump at sudden sounds was long since past.

As well as the constant desire to remain outside, so she could see the sky.

The cloth formerly known as an altar cloth, because it could no longer be an altar cloth when it did not cover an altar, could it?, it was a comforting weight around Luna's shoulders. She pulled it tighter around her as he asked why she had hugged him. To her, as silly as another might see it, it was more than woven cloth. But was, instead, signifying a person (that being Andy) actually taking her needs into consideration without seeming to think about it.

It was not as if she would ever say she was neglected, per se. Just that those she could call friends did not seem to always to reciprocate her depth of friendly feelings. The connections she had had with the Golden Trio had faded over time, not disappearing entirely, but she no longer called them close friends. If only because she had slowly realized that they did not hold her in the same esteem, and that they rarely saw each other in recent days.

"You're a very good man, Andy," Luna answered honestly. That was all there was to it.

She followed him into lying down on the cloth covered floor. It was not exactly the worse place she had ever slept. It was semi warm, it was pretty clean, she was not alone and no screams or cries rent the night. All in all, not a bad place. Without saying anything, the little blonde with her partially dry hair lay down beside him. Half on her side, and half on her stomach, pulling her knees slightly up and her hands close to her chest and face. Turned towards Andy, she quickly fell asleep with the ease of someone who could sleep nearly anywhere. In nearly any circumstance.

A very good man, Luna said.

The statement stirred a memory of the day he wished he could forget from his past. You be good, Andy...

Yeah, right. Real good. He was trying, but life sure as shit wasn't making it easy on him.

Still, Andy was glad to see that Luna was going to join him. The reason was three-fold, really. It would be warmer with them laying together, he'd feel more relaxed knowing that she was right beside him and he wouldn't have to worry about someone snatching her right from under her nose (Andy had come to the conclusion that, in this place, apparently anything went), and well, she was Luna and she was sharing a makeshift bed with him.

She said nothing in response to his essentially unasked question about using one another to keep warm and before he could bother trying his luck by asking again, she'd turned to face him and pulled her knees up slightly; so that was a no, then. Faster than it had taken her to get down on the floor, she seemed to be out like a light.

"Luna?" he whispered, a little surprised. He'd only ever been able to pass out like that when he was drunk as fuck or stoned.

He turned on his side, propping himself up with his elbow and looked over Luna at the doorway to the church. It was closed, but he could hear thunder rumbling in the distance and the wind whistling through the warped wood out of which the building was made. He hoped that she'd latched it behind her so it didn't blow open in the middle of the night and put out their fire...

Andy's eyes returned to Luna and he smiled, rolling his eyes a little when a piece of her hair - that same piece that had been bothering her back in the woods that morning - slid down her face and fell over her eye. With a soft sigh, he gingerly pushed it back out of her face and tucked it behind her ear. How she was able to sleep while he, himself, was still so on-edge, he had no idea.

Finally, he laid back down after a few minutes of watching the shadows and firelight dance across Luna's profile. Lacing his hands behind his head, he stared up at the ceiling and tried to put together some of the many things running through his head. There had to be a reason they were here and if it wasn't all Psychic Kids, chances were that the Yellow-Eyed man wasn't it. That quite possibly knocked Sam off his pedestal of expertise, Andy thought, and that was disquieting, because if there was one person in the whole world, oddly enough, that Andy would trust to get them out alive and well, it was Sam Winchester. Even better if they managed to find a way to get Dean here, as well.

Yawning, Andy realized that as uncomfortable and slightly freaked out as he was about falling asleep where he was, he was losing the battle to stay awake. Part of it was the fear that once he fell asleep, he'd wake up in yet another new place, surrounded by still more unfamiliar faces. But, Luna was already passed out; he might as well join her. And so with another sigh, Andy closed his eyes and let himself drift off to sleep. Tomorrow was another day; they'd find their way out then.
