There was a quick click, followed by a soft whirring noise when she tweaked the last part fully into place. Panels, hones, wires, main storage unit...well, it was not pretty, but it should work.

It had taken her a little longer than she had initially estimated, but the water heater powered by solar rays was complete. Sure, it would only power (at most) two showers at a time (a generous estimate), and (when she checked the heating rate) would take several hours for enough water to be really available to be used, but she was done. At least for the time being.

Feeling accomplished, the mechanic planted her fists on her hips and studied her frankenstein device. Even if she did not know what the reference really pertained to. That had been lost to the ages for most.

As usual, Rorschach was skulking around trying to find people causing trouble. Of all the night watchmen, it was probably true that he took his job the most neurotically seriously. Men like Rorschach liked to have a purpose, after all... and though protecting his partner, Merope, was plenty to keep a soul busy, old habits died hard. Rorschach was, after all, a masked hero. It was in his blood to want to search, protect, and punish those who were trying to corrupt justice.

So, of course, the click, whirring noise, and soft humming sound that followed swiftly aroused the paranoid man's suspicions.

He noticed Kaylee immediately. She didn't seem like the threatening type... in fact, she looked quite harmless. But Rorschach was not about to take chances. Quickly and silently, he strode forward, attempting to grab her arms and hold them behind her back. "What is this machine? Talk... or will make you..."

The feeling of having accomplished something bled away immediately when someone came out of nowhere and grabbed her arms behind her back. Instantly Kaylee was reminded of the bounty hunter, Jubal Early, who had taken her hostage just over a month before. He had tied her up and threatened to rape her if she refused to tell him where River was, and she (to her great shame) had complied.

Eyes wide with fear, mouth open, it took a second for her to struggle to speak. "It-it's a hot water heater. For the showers." Nearly trembling with more remembered fear than what the circumstance likely earned as of yet, she tried to explain more. "It weren't meant ta hurt anyone, I swear. Just give us warm showers."

"Wuh de tyen, ah."

Dear god in Heaven...

The saddest thing about Rorschach's behavior was that it was always, in his own mind, completely justified. He lived his whole life on a precipice, believing that there was a steep drop below him while it might have only been a few feet. In other words, he saw danger where there wasn't, which meant that he often created it.

"Hot water heater. For showers," he repeated, pondering for a moment before releasing Kaylee's arms. "Am night watchmen. Name is Rorschach. Purpose to serve, protect. Will prove it to me? That it is not a weapon for destruction of lives?" Though it was impossible to see Rorschach's face under his shifting mask, his gruff voice contained a slight querying intonation.

He repeated her words, Kaylee waited uneasily for him to speak again, to move. "Please let me go," if she could have her hands back, not held behind her, she would feel less like she had been thrown back a month in time. Memories she would rather be without, they rose to the surface.

He released her, and the young woman immediately stepped away from him, turning around to see him. Only to find his face masked, dingy gray fabric marked with black moving shapes. "But, it's not night," she spoke without thinking, looking at the bright morning sunshine ahead. "I will, but I don't know how you want me to show you. It's just a water heater."

"Is not night... but still bound by duty. Justice never sleeps," Rorschach said staunchly, standing a little straighter. Watching others from behind the shifting spots on his mask was always far preferable to having Walter's face exposed. Rorschach hated Walter, was not Walter, would never be Walter again. To him, Rorschach was the only truth and the only reality, and the only identity he would allow himself to be known by.

"Good. Important that it is proven to be harmless," Rorschach said. "Show me inner workings. Show lack of dangerous chemicals and spreading mechanism for biological warfare. Show lack of explosive materials, lack of tachyon particles. Can?"

"Right, justice." Personally, Rorschach was reminding her more and more of Early, and that was not a comparison she wanted to be around. Or like Dobson, before and after he had shot her for simply asking what had been going on. Unconsciously, one of her hands moved to her lower abdomen, over the barely noticeable scar left from that bullet. And that mask, it was frightening all on its own.

What else could she do but try to put his seeming paranoia at ease. Naturally Kaylee saw the best in everybody, but she really was not sure what she could find in this man. Especially when she could not see his face.

With a stiff half of a nod, she turned back to the device she had built, carefully removing the front panel to show him. Turning her back on him did not feel right, but what else could she do? The mechanic took a step aside, "See, nothing that'd hurt anybody. Unless they stuck their hand in the middle of it, I guess, some pieces are sharp." Please don't mess up my work, she thought to herself.

Rorschach watched carefully as Kaylee removed the front panel, hunching his shoulders forward like a crow. Even though Kaylee had her fears about turning her back to him, he made no further movements, either toward her or away, seeming fixated on his business.

"Perhaps should post warning, for safety. So that no one puts hand inside." Without another word, he turned and started to walk away, apparently satisfied.

It really was not just that a foul-smelling, masked man had appeared out of nowhere to grab her. Well, not all anyway. More that he had reminded her of something she really would rather not think about. Then again, the whole mask thing? Who wouldn't freak about having someone in their face that they could not meet their eyes. There was just something fundamentally unsettling about not being able to look him in the eye.

"Yeah, I-I think I can do that," how, she had no idea at the moment. Her thoughts were mostly bouncing on the subject of not wanting him around. When he walked away, without so much as another word, Kaylee breathed a sigh of relief.

Thank Buddha he was leaving.
