L had fallen asleep near Laura, the bruises on his chest from being pelted by cans in the not-quick stop aching and sore, but he'd kept his silence about them, just as he knew Bob would most likely keep his silence about the poison oak. Previously, L had never really hated or resented anyone. Even the criminals he helped catch for a living didn't personally anger him. Most criminals were petty, insolent, and stupid, thinking that they could pull one over on L. But if there was one thing he absolutely couldn't stand, it was an insult to his intelligence and his competence. It was why he hated Bob. It was why he had realized, sometime during the Kira case, that he hated Light Yagami.

Light had beat him at chess shortly after they'd met. So cool and confident had he been, he'd caught L completely off-guard with the victory. Months later, it still bothered L that he had not seen that bishop come in from nowhere, forcing his king into a corner, with the knight there all along to finish him off. And Light had done it so easily. That game had set the basis for their entire relationship, in a way. Light's smirk after saying "checkmate" said much more than the age-old call of victory. It had meant I respect you. You are a more formidable adversary than I have ever met. But you are not invincible, and I can kill you if I just know how.

L had been backed into a corner. He'd known that there was a knight hidden somewhere, as in the game of chess, to seal his fate and kill him quietly. And then this had happened. He'd thought that he was rid of Light, but he should have known that his greatest rival would follow him here, intentionally or not, to finish the job they'd both started. Trying to dismantle the other in any way possible was still their greatest goal; L had felt the resentment and anger crackling over the journals. Laura had felt it, so complete and bitter was their contempt for each other, and chided him, but L was still resolute. Light was guilty of the original crime he had been accused of. One missing piece of evidence was not enough for L to forget the intuitive chill that touched him whenever Light was near.

Shivering, he drew the blanket closer around himself, realizing that he must have fallen asleep at some point the day before at long last, and that Laura had doubtless put him to bed. Laura... L thought of her shiny dark hair, the mystery of her existence, how her eyes were both rigid and soft. How she seemed to accept him unconditionally, even when he constantly alienated others and was painfully awkward. Still partially under influence of the sedative, without consciously realizing what he was doing, he cuddled up closer to the body next to him. It was also cold, not surprising L, since he knew Laura's secret. How L loved secrets... his hand stroked Laura's cool shoulder, slipping down her arm, her rib cage, her hip... and then L recoiled sharply, after coming in contact with something he was quite positive Laura did not possess. Unless she had more secrets.

He sat upright, realizing for the first time that he was, himself, naked, and that the person next to him was none other than Light Yagami. Furthermore, it was snowing and they were in the forest. The paranoid man's first thought was that Bob had orchestrated this as revenge for the premeditated poison oak, but he realized that it just as easily could have been Light himself. Hadn't they always been obsessed with each other to an unhealthy degree? Who knew what Light would do to get inside his head? He panicked inwardly as he realized that he actually didn't know what had happened the night before. He couldn't remember. Venting some of his frustration, he kicked Light sharply in the calf.

Nearby, there was a heavy crunching noise of sticks and bracken being bent and snapped, accompanied by a series of low growls.

Light and L were being stalked by something. It seemed to be growing closer.

L winced, flailing slightly when Light grabbed him up so carelessly. He was reaching the dangerous point where he was ceasing to actually feel the cold, and he was starting to get drowsy; the first signs of actually freezing to death.

However, the sound of growling and the crunching of bracken was enough to jar him out of his apathetic, dazed state, at least enough to realize that they were in somewhat real danger.

"What was that? You... heard that, right?"

Light had already been facing the direction the sound had come from when L had spoken his fears. "Tell me, L....Was that woman telling me the truth when she said monsters were here?"

L didn't even have to ask which woman... any of them could have said that, and it would have been the truth.

"Of course she was telling the truth... what reason would she have to lie?" he asked, forcing his voice out through clenched teeth.

The weevil was certainly drawn to the scent of fresh meat, and the hot-blooded nature of the struggle between the two young men had gotten its attention. If either L or Light had cared to glance over due northeast of the tree Light had pounded L into, he would have seen a pair of yellow eyes watching them.

It came closer, the sound of its breathing clearly audible.

"Then we'd better run." Light muttered, suddenly grabbing L up and proceeding to do so, making sure to go in the opposite direction of said noise.

He only hoped that the monster wasn't as fast, but considering the circumstances, he was quite sure that would not be the case.

L was hauled to his feet by Light, staggering after him away from the sound the monster in the forest was making. He hadn't had the presence of mind to grab the blanket, so he was hobbling along as naked as the day he was born.

"We can't outrun it... not like this..." L said, glancing around, looking for some kind of plan he could formulate quickly.

He saw it.

Shivering from cold and fear, L pointed towards a slight clearing. "Light... go stand over there. Make sure it's in plain view of the monster."

"What? You're making me bait? Like hell I'm going to agree to that! Tell me your plan first!" Light yelled, definitely not planning to trust L in any way.

L took a moment to gnash his chronically sugar-sore teeth for a moment before heaving a deep sigh. Light was actually going to ruin everything.

"I'm sorry, but there's not time to explain," he said, grabbing a tree branch that was about chest-height and drawing it back as far as he could, holding it spring-loaded with his wiry arms. "If you want to live, trust me and make sure that the monster runs toward you. This has to be precise."

Light watched L carefully, trying to figure out said plan in his own mind. If L betrayed him last minute...then he'd run. However, that would leave L with no one to persecute if he got back to their world.

So, he ran towards the open spot and stood still, watching both L and the weevil warily.

This better work right...

The animal sounds in the nearby bracken continued as the creature locked its attention on Light. The boy was vulnerable, naked, and would never be able to run away with bare feet and in this bitter cold.

With terrifying speed, the thing charged, barreling towards Light with its maw wide and its claws outstretched.

L bit his lip, curling his shoulders forward in preparation as the thing rushed forward. It was far worse seeing it than hearing it, since it was clearly evident as the danger they faced.

Just before the monster ran by, L released the tree branch he'd been holding taut. It hit the creature at neck-level, and a loud splintering of bones was heard. The creature dropped to the ground with a loud thud, and L started shaking as a result of having unused adrenaline coursing through his system.

Glancing up at Light, he nodded briskly. "Good... good job..."

Light was about to run again, but then L acted and the monster fell. As soon as he had seen it, blood had rushed through his system and his heart had been pumping.

So, once he heard those bones crack, he gasped in deeply, having not even noticed heamd been holding his breath. He remained still for a while, making sure the creature didn't act or wake back up. Then, he slowly moved around it and then ran back toward L. "Y-yeah.... Good job..." He noticed he'd dropped the blanket back a few yards. He ran toward it, grabbing L's hand to guide him back. Once they reached it, he grabbed it up, glancing at L for a moment, as if making sure he was fine with doing the smart thing now.

L's willingness to act tended to be very, very good, but after extreme encounters like that one his brain tended to turn off. He was shaking and speechless, allowing Light to take his hand without resisting, and following numbly back to the blanket.

He couldn't believe that they had been tearing each other apart the moment before... just now, they'd succeeded in saving each others' lives.

Light decided to not to wait for the speechless and shocked L to react then. Time was of the essence, after all...

Light wrapped the blanket around L, moving some snow off the ground in an area big enough for both of them. Hopefully, the lack of snow would make it easier to stay warm. He then grabbed the blanket and wrapped it around himself as well before guiding L down to sit beside him on the snow-free spot.

"There..."

L's teeth chattered as Light guided him to the ground, and without really worrying about his aversion to contact or his suspicion of Kira, he pressed himself against the other young man. Their bodies really were far warmer when they were in contact with each other.

Staying close to L at the moment felt really nice. He closed his eyes and sighed, taking in the warmth without protest. He looked at L for a few brief seconds at regular intervals. He continued to try and keep his body in check at the combination of the close proximity and the cold weather.

His body heating up his extremities and pumping extra blood to them didn't help.

"Before you say anything....remember that it's very cold..."

"What does that have to do with anything?" L asked, mumbling into Light's shoulder. The desire to survive was easily stronger than L's pride, even though it seemed like said pride was insurmountable at times.

He pressed himself closer to Light, the other man's extra blood-flow only making him warmer.

Of course, L didn't get the reason for Light's discomfort.

Light bit his bottom lip. "Well..." He breathed in deeply, shifting a little so L wouldn't notice so easily. "Well... When the body starts getting cold, but not too cold, it begins rushing more blood to the extremities to keep them from freezing... And the physical activity, as well as the close proximity between us...is...uhm...keeping me from getting too cold..." he swallowed thickly, explaining it good enough that even he believed that was the reason for his situation.

L got it.

He sighed heavily, shifting his body carefully as if touching it would burn him.

"Just please keep your erection away from me." A very awkward silence followed.

Light sighed, his face flushing a bit in embarrassment, his body heating up exponentially due to the awkwardness. He hoped that L would heat up enough that they could get a move on soon enough, because his pride was beyond hurt at this point.

The situation really was all kinds of awkward; though L hardly ever blushed, a pinkish tinge was creeping into his cheeks.

"I'm warmer now. Thank you for sharing your body heat with me," he said, though it sounded stupidly formal under the circumstances. They were practically embracing like lovers, after all.

"...It's fine...I've apparently got plenty of it at the moment." Light replied, breathing in deeply and trying to think of ways to get rid of his current problem.

"...Are you warm enough we could go?" Maybe walking it off would work...

"I hope that Laura is not too worried..." he said softly, to break the frosty, embarrassed silence.

"Yeah..Laura....kay..." Light wasn't really paying attention. He began working forward as soon as L looked composed enough to go. He wanted out of this embarrassing situation and never to speak of it again.
