Status: Complete

L had fallen asleep near Laura, the bruises on his chest from being pelted by cans in the not-quick stop aching and sore, but he'd kept his silence about them, just as he knew Bob would most likely keep his silence about the poison oak. Previously, L had never really hated or resented anyone. Even the criminals he helped catch for a living didn't personally anger him. Most criminals were petty, insolent, and stupid, thinking that they could pull one over on L. But if there was one thing he absolutely couldn't stand, it was an insult to his intelligence and his competence. It was why he hated Bob. It was why he had realized, sometime during the Kira case, that he hated Light Yagami.

Light had beat him at chess shortly after they'd met. So cool and confident had he been, he'd caught L completely off-guard with the victory. Months later, it still bothered L that he had not seen that bishop come in from nowhere, forcing his king into a corner, with the knight there all along to finish him off. And Light had done it so easily. That game had set the basis for their entire relationship, in a way. Light's smirk after saying "checkmate" said much more than the age-old call of victory. It had meant I respect you. You are a more formidable adversary than I have ever met. But you are not invincible, and I can kill you if I just know how.

L had been backed into a corner. He'd known that there was a knight hidden somewhere, as in the game of chess, to seal his fate and kill him quietly. And then this had happened. He'd thought that he was rid of Light, but he should have known that his greatest rival would follow him here, intentionally or not, to finish the job they'd both started. Trying to dismantle the other in any way possible was still their greatest goal; L had felt the resentment and anger crackling over the journals. Laura had felt it, so complete and bitter was their contempt for each other, and chided him, but L was still resolute. Light was guilty of the original crime he had been accused of. One missing piece of evidence was not enough for L to forget the intuitive chill that touched him whenever Light was near.

Shivering, he drew the blanket closer around himself, realizing that he must have fallen asleep at some point the day before at long last, and that Laura had doubtless put him to bed. Laura... L thought of her shiny dark hair, the mystery of her existence, how her eyes were both rigid and soft. How she seemed to accept him unconditionally, even when he constantly alienated others and was painfully awkward. Still partially under influence of the sedative, without consciously realizing what he was doing, he cuddled up closer to the body next to him. It was also cold, not surprising L, since he knew Laura's secret. How L loved secrets... his hand stroked Laura's cool shoulder, slipping down her arm, her rib cage, her hip... and then L recoiled sharply, after coming in contact with something he was quite positive Laura did not possess. Unless she had more secrets.

He sat upright, realizing for the first time that he was, himself, naked, and that the person next to him was none other than Light Yagami. Furthermore, it was snowing and they were in the forest. The paranoid man's first thought was that Bob had orchestrated this as revenge for the premeditated poison oak, but he realized that it just as easily could have been Light himself. Hadn't they always been obsessed with each other to an unhealthy degree? Who knew what Light would do to get inside his head? He panicked inwardly as he realized that he actually didn't know what had happened the night before. He couldn't remember. Venting some of his frustration, he kicked Light sharply in the calf.

Hmm...cold... Almost as cold as death. Of course, he'd grown used to that cold. Ryuk had always liked to get really close and just breath on him during the night, simply because the shinigami had known it annoyed the would-be god. However, at least he'd been merciful enough to leave a blanket on.

And then he felt hands on him, cold, just as cold as the death surrounding him, but slightly warm at the core. Some life deep down within those digits. The hands moved all along him, making him groan in frustration. Some day he'd teach that damn shinigami just how far was too far. However, for now, he was too sleepy to bother. He'd get Ryuk later.

And then those hands touched a sensitive area that should not have been exposed. Wait...When had his clothes been taken off? Huh? Damn Ryuk! Had he done that while Light was sleeping as well?

And then the hands were suddenly pulled away and Light sleepily breathed a sigh of relief. Maybe he'd finish getting his sleep now and maybe Ryuk would leave him alone. Of course, as soon as that thought had entered his head, he felt a sharp pain to his calf and his eyes flew open.

"What the-?! Dammit, Ryu-!" He was glad he had seen who was actually there before finishing that name. He grasped at his injured leg and glared at him. "What the hell are you doing here?! I thought you were done sleeping with me!"

L narrowed his eyes contemptuously. Shifting uncomfortably on the rough ground, trying to find a spot where his jutting hip wasn't pressed painfully into a bit of bracken, he tried to keep his icy, translucent skin covered as much as possible without touching Light. Since they were under the same blanket, this was fairly difficult.

"I could just as easily ask you the same thing..." L mumbled, sucking his thumb. "I'm sure you've noticed, Light, but we're neither of us indoors and we're both unclothed. There has to be some explanation, but..." he trailed off, afraid to say what he was sure was on both their minds. He began to check himself over, trying to see if he'd been torn or violated in any way.

Light was quiet for a moment. Had Ryuk-?

Wait....Hadn't he arrived in some strange world yesterday? Was he still there? He looked around and found that the forest seemed a bit familiar...but...there was snow everywhere...

This was getting stranger and stranger by the second. He noticed L looking himself over and decided to do the same. Of course, he was relieved to find no scratches or breaks in his skin. No semen was anywhere either.

If they hadn't done that....then what exactly had happened last night? He couldn't remember...

Maybe they had, but it was cleaned up completely? But...if L was not in pain...then either his assumptions that L was a virgin in that area was wrong..or...

He didn't like that alternative, so he wasn't going to think about it. No way in hell would L dominate over Kira if Light had anything to say about it.

"Just what the hell happened last night?" He uttered out loud, so confused and disliking of the situation that he had resorted to four-letter words.

After L was completely certain that he had not been violated in any noticeable way, he drew his knees toward his chest, glaring dourly at Light.

"How would I know what happened last night?" He asked in a flat monotone, trying to imagine that things were like they had been back on Task Force. Simply related as suspect and investigator... with a few very charged overtones due to their similarities and compatibility that way, but nothing else. L was sure of it.

L shivered, drawing the blanket closer around himself. He was so thin that he was almost turning blue, even with the blanket and Light there. Granted, he was trying not to actually touch Light... but he couldn't hide his teeth chattering.

Of course, Light was almost as thin as L, but his immune system was likely much better, considering their diets. However, he wasn't about to let L take all the warmth. He tugged at the blanket himself, holding it around his form as much as he could.

Besides, Light was sure he used his extremities much more than L did. L could afford losing his legs and penis, at the least, but Light wasn't about to go without those in life.

"Well, then, I suppose we're both in the same boat....or blanket...whichever you prefer."

L's eyes narrowed further as he noticed Light trying to take more of the blanket for warmth. It was a deplorable situation: two selfish geniuses, both of whom saw themselves as more worthy of surviving than the other one.

"It's a blanket," he retorted, more literal in dire conditions. He curled his body more tightly into a ball. It would conserve warmth for a while, but not forever.

"We don't have to be. The whole point of this world is that it's small.
We can find our way back to town," L said confidently, though he didn't recognize their surroundings and was certain that Light didn't, either. He stood, taking the blanket with him with a sharp yank, and started walking.

Light got up, ran after him, and grabbed the blanket from L and wrapped it around himself. "No way are you taking the blanket for yourself. I'm sure you could make do without the extremities you'd lose, considering you only really use your hands, arms, eyes, ears, and that smart-ass mouth iof yours. I, however, use all of my extremities. Therefore, I should have the blanket, for I will make full use out of it." He then began walking in the opposite direction.

L's eyes widened at what he perceived to be sheer audacity on Light's part. How dare he talk to L like that? He glowered, lowering his head and baring his teeth like a cornered and vicious animal, when Light took the blanket and left him naked and shivering.

He followed Light purposefully. "You say I don't use my extremeties, Yagami-kun?" he asked, his voice and temper rising in the bitter cold. "I will demonstrate how well I use them." with that, he swiftly twisted and kicked Light, a capoeira move in which his sharp, bony heel drove downward with devastating precision into one of Light's shoulders.

"In my opinion, you could stand to lose yours less," he said contemptuously.

"I didn't say you didn't use them!" He yelled as he grabbed at his shoulder, massaging it to lessen the pain a little. His voice calmed after this. "I said you don't use them as much as me..and if I used mine less then I would be as isolated as you, and I'm more social than you are."

"You are social, aren't you?" L asked, taking the opportunity to snatch the blanket back. What he wouldn't give for a hot cup of coffee...

"You're so social that you are truly amazing, Light. You're a real lady killer, though I've never actually gotten the impression that you like girls. Your jokes knock them dead at parties... though I've never thought you had much of a sense of humor. Oh, wait... there was that amusing little hint, 'L, do you know that gods of death love apples?' That was funny, all right..."

L didn't care that he was ranting. He had given up so many hours of his life (and almost his life itself, he was certain) to prove that Light was Kira. He'd be damned if this continued the way it had in their other world, and he had a lot of negative feelings to get off of his chest. Being naked and cold didn't help his mood, naturally.

Light glared, grabbing at another end of the blanket and tugging. "I'm sure you would knock them dead with just a glance at your zombie-like face! I know I never liked waking up to look into those eyes every morning!"

"I wouldn't knock anyone dead. I am not Kira," L snapped, holding tight to his end of the blanket. Even though his feet were freezing, he did not relinquish his hold on it.

"Zombie... I see. Do you think I actually enjoyed being so close to you all the time? I value my privacy very highly. Under any less dire circumstances, I would have kept my face hidden and never resorted to such a repugnant situation."

"I'm not Kira, either. Stop accusing me of so!" he tugged back, a regular tug of war starting between them.

"You seemed to enjoy it more than me! I only agreed because I knew I had no other choice, and not doing so would make me look less innocent than I am." Light replied, glaring.

Nearby, there was a heavy crunching noise of sticks and bracken being bent and snapped, accompanied by a series of low growls.

Light and L were being stalked by something. It seemed to be growing closer.

L winced, flailing slightly when Light grabbed him up so carelessly. He was reaching the dangerous point where he was ceasing to actually feel the cold, and he was starting to get drowsy; the first signs of actually freezing to death.

However, the sound of growling and the crunching of bracken was enough to jar him out of his apathetic, dazed state, at least enough to realize that they were in somewhat real danger.

"What was that? You... heard that, right?"

Light had already been facing the direction the sound had come from when L had spoken his fears. "Tell me, L....Was that woman telling me the truth when she said monsters were here?"

L didn't even have to ask which woman... any of them could have said that, and it would have been the truth.

"Of course she was telling the truth... what reason would she have to lie?" he asked, forcing his voice out through clenched teeth.

The weevil was certainly drawn to the scent of fresh meat, and the hot-blooded nature of the struggle between the two young men had gotten its attention. If either L or Light had cared to glance over due northeast of the tree Light had pounded L into, he would have seen a pair of yellow eyes watching them.

It came closer, the sound of its breathing clearly audible.

"Then we'd better run." Light muttered, suddenly grabbing L up and proceeding to do so, making sure to go in the opposite direction of said noise.

He only hoped that the monster wasn't as fast, but considering the circumstances, he was quite sure that would not be the case.

L was hauled to his feet by Light, staggering after him away from the sound the monster in the forest was making. He hadn't had the presence of mind to grab the blanket, so he was hobbling along as naked as the day he was born.

"We can't outrun it... not like this..." L said, glancing around, looking for some kind of plan he could formulate quickly.

He saw it.

Shivering from cold and fear, L pointed towards a slight clearing. "Light... go stand over there. Make sure it's in plain view of the monster."

L took a moment to gnash his chronically sugar-sore teeth for a moment before heaving a deep sigh. Light was actually going to ruin everything.

"I'm sorry, but there's not time to explain," he said, grabbing a tree branch that was about chest-height and drawing it back as far as he could, holding it spring-loaded with his wiry arms. "If you want to live, trust me and make sure that the monster runs toward you. This has to be precise."

Light watched L carefully, trying to figure out said plan in his own mind. If L betrayed him last minute...then he'd run. However, that would leave L with no one to persecute if he got back to their world.

So, he ran towards the open spot and stood still, watching both L and the weevil warily.

This better work right...

The animal sounds in the nearby bracken continued as the creature locked its attention on Light. The boy was vulnerable, naked, and would never be able to run away with bare feet and in this bitter cold.

With terrifying speed, the thing charged, barreling towards Light with its maw wide and its claws outstretched.

L bit his lip, curling his shoulders forward in preparation as the thing rushed forward. It was far worse seeing it than hearing it, since it was clearly evident as the danger they faced.

Just before the monster ran by, L released the tree branch he'd been holding taut. It hit the creature at neck-level, and a loud splintering of bones was heard. The creature dropped to the ground with a loud thud, and L started shaking as a result of having unused adrenaline coursing through his system.

Glancing up at Light, he nodded briskly. "Good... good job..."
