Entry tags:!incomplete, day 05, dean winchester, location: church, luna lovegood, sam winchester

Who: Luna Lovegood, Dean and Sam Winchester
What: Beer and Pixie Sticks
When: Evening
Where: Outside the Church
Rating: TBA (Dean has an interesting vocab at times)
Status: Active

Night was in the wings to fall, Luna noticed as she sat on the steps at the front of the church. Back in the pants, button up shirt, suspenders and jean jacket she had worn not long before, it was cool but not extremely cold for her. Growing up in England and going on regular trips to Icelandic countries tended to keep one used to cold temperatures as a rule.

Dean had specified that his and Sam's father had been his height, when she had asked if either of their parents had been half giants, but he had never said how tall he  was. So, perhaps, he was another extremely tall individual. The Second Sam she had met that morning when he had arrived with Martha had also had attributes of a quarter giant. But, perhaps, America was full of such tall people. Visits to Sweden had revealed even larger individuals, but everyone knew that the water was magically inclined to overly large Muggles in that country. It was quite common knowledge.

Eating a small bar of chocolate, and avoiding the small cluster of multicolored dextrosey Pixie Walking Sticks in her lap, Luna was more interested in inspecting the clouds above than watching for any approaching persons. The obscured sky was easier to contemplate than some subjects that she would rather avoid her mind lighting upon.

Nightmares of a dungeon, Confoundus Charms, what porcupine pudding tasted of...

He felt like he'd walked around the world twice today. He'd been to all four corners of the small town and on every road too. It was time to wind up the day and what better way to do it, he thought, than to debate pixie sticks and rare animals with a girl interested in trying skunky alcohol as long as it didn't have animal by-products in it. Not to mention he was clean now. The evening air was chilly, especially given that his hair was wet, but he was warm enough for this.

Having stopped at the liquor store and grabbed a couple six packs of warm, disgusting, off-brand beer, Dean was nearly to the church before he actually saw Luna. At least, he was pretty sure it was her. Shannon had done an excellent job of describing her if it was indeed Luna. The girl was tiny and practically perfect. He smiled instantly and stopped far enough away to watch her gazing up at the clouds for a long moment, appreciating her prettiness and ease in her surroundings.

Then, because he couldn't stand there anymore without feeling like a peeping tom, he started walking again only to stop beside her. "Luna?" he asked. Setting down the beer he'd carried under his arm, he offered her his hand. "Dean Winchester, Sam's brother. Here for the dextrose tasting."

The witch had been leaning back on one hand, so she could better look up at the sky, slowly eating her bar of chocolate.

It had taken most of the day for her to believe that Death Eaters were definitely not lurking in the shadows. Well, not definitely, little was definite in this world. But, at least, her guard had lowered until it was down to its usually undetectable levels. She was not entirely unaware of the world around her, it merely seemed that way.

At the sound of her name, she tilted her head back up, still leaning backwards on that one hand, the bar of chocolate against her lips. Luna tilted her head while she inspected the handsome man. Both alike and unalike her friend Sam in looks. Lighter hair, stockier body, slightly bowlegged stance. There was a scar on his chin that was quite interesting, she thought.

"Are you sure that neither of your parents were half giants? You are awful tall." And then she smiled, looking at the odd little metal cans that Muggles liked to put fluids in. Something she had not discovered until she had turned nineteen. "And you brought beer not made of skunks as trade?" Dean was tall enough that she had to nearly look back up at the sky again to look at him.

Dean chuckled goodnaturedly, eyes twinkling as she asked about his parents. "I'm pretty sure they weren't half giants or anything near giants. As far as tall goes, I think I'm about average for where I come from." He liked the way she looked at him. There was an open, honestness to it that afforded him an idea of what she was thinking when she took in his physical appearance.

"Yes, skunky beer only made from grains and other natural ingredients. No animals in the beer, I promise. Want one?" he asked, smiling as he sat down beside her and pulling a can from the plastic circle holding it to the other five in the pack. He held it out to her, careful not to shake it. "It's not cold but it's got the alcohol which I think is all that matters."

He settled down with his own beer, flipping the top and clinking his can against hers before taking a sip and looking up at the clouds. "Nice night. Think the stars will come out tonight? It's been a long time since I've really looked up. Even longer since I was back in big sky country without light pollution blocking out the stars."

"So Americans are all extremely tall then?" Sam was extremely tall, Second Sam was tall (she thought he was American), Shannon was much taller than herself. She looked down herself, kicking her legs a bit. The reason for her tinyhood was something completely different than environmental.

Looking back at him, she took another bite of her chocolate.

Good that there was not anything animal like in those cans. She would feel bad about that. At his smile, she returned it with one of her own, bright and sunny. "Yes, thank you." When she reached over to take it, her fingers brushed his for a second, "I have never drank beer cold before, is it an American custom?" Luna was not a particularly big fan of beer, but she had drunk the stuff here and there over the years. Alcohol was a staple to the British, at least in her experience.

"Cheers," the witch smiled as he tapped her can with his. Her very first careful drink of the substance earned the drink a wrinkled nose as she pulled the can away to look at it. "Trace the shapes in the sky made of stars, like when I was a child." Keeping herself on that arm, she bent back until she was leaning back on her elbow. "The stars are hard to find in London, but at home, in Devon, you can see spark in the darkness."

Taking another drink, steeling past the taste, she looked over at him for a second. "I love the sky."

"Maybe they're tall to you. We all seem to be pretty normal to me. Well, except Sam. He's never been normal but that has nothing to do with how tall he is." He grinned and winked at her. He wondered just when all his trashing on his brother would catch up with him. It was all in good fun though. Nothing mean meant by it. Well, not much really.

He watched her eat the chocolate and thought how refreshing it was to see a girl who wasn't afraid of it putting an extra hundred pounds on her hips. Judging from her tiny figure, she never had to worry about that. He caught himself smiling appreciatively and glanced away, shaking his head at himself, only to look back somewhat sharply at her fingers brushed his. That translated and he immediately smiled again at her.

You're a dog, Winchester. But what was it with these blondes today?

"Yep," he replied, his tone edged with playful mocking. "Beer is the ultimate American custom." He chuckled and took another sip. "And, if you can drink an entire can of this stuff, I'll think about making you an honorary American for taking part in our best custom."

He watched her again. This time from the corner of his eye as he nursed the disgusting beer. She seemed so at ease. He wondered what her life had been like before being dropped into this place that she could be so easy with it all. She was talking about the stars, reminiscing and it struck him that she must really be at peace internally. He envied her that and hoped that wasn't in his expression when she glanced over at him.

"Ah yes, the sky. Blue pixie sticks?" he asked.

Dean seemed to smile more than anyone else that she had met in this bubble village so far. Granted, it was not exactly a smiling place, but somehow he managed to enjoy the moment. She smiled at him, his wink reminding her of boys at Hogwarts who would wink at all the pretty girls, but not exactly in her direction. Oh, and of that old bookseller she liked in Diagon Alley, he always winked at her to make her smile. Curious as it occurred to her, she had to ask, "You've not taken Vicodin, have you?"

After all, Andy had smiled much more after having some of the substance. Whatever it was.

She took another drink of her beer, looking through the hole cut in the top to try to see the liquid inside. How were you supposed to determine whether or not insects were having boat races on the suds when you could not see the beer inside? Which was why, she believed that beer was usually served in a glass bottles or glasses. "It tastes a bit of metal," she observed.

"It was invented over 11,000 years ago in Egypt, did you know?" Someone, she believed it actually had been on that first trip to Egypt at eighteen, had told her the fact. And she thought it was interesting and that it might appeal to him, as she sent him a small smile. "Their prayers to a Goddess Ninkasi actually were a prayer and a recipe rolled all in one." Another drink, "We serve ours warm, but far sweeter than this." An honorary American, "Would I need to give up British citizenship?"

She glanced over at Dean, and was puzzled by the expression on his face. "What is it?" After not being able to translate what Andy had been thinking about and what he had been saying by looking at his face, Luna had come to the conclusion that it was either an American thing, or a Not-Muggle thing. And was curious to know what he was thinking.

Luna set down her beer long enough to pick out a few blue pixie crutches to offer out to him, "Sky for your pocket."

Luna was definitely in a category all of her own. Dean almost choked on a swallow of beer as he laughed. "Vicodin? No," he answered, wiping at a dribble of beer that had flecked his shirt when he'd pulled the can away from his mouth to laugh without choking to death. "Why would I take Vicodin? I'm not in any pain. Er, well not a lot at least." Absently he lifted the edge of his sleeve to rub at the tattoo that both itched and hurt at the same time. It wasn't a big deal. Nothing he couldn't ignore really.

"Yeah, it's pretty gross, isn't it?" he agreed and drained the can, crushing it in his fist with one quick move. "Good old Egyptians." He guessed the taste was growing on him. He'd had enough of it with Shannon and on his own to have gotten used to it. Still, warm beer made him want to gag on some levels. "Warm beer is not really what Americans prefer. Sweet neither. You wouldn't have to give up British citizenship for the honorary title. It'd be the same as saying I'll make you an honorary Winchester if you drink a second can of this stuff."

He was grinning again as he teased her, prodding her into getting a little tipsy with him. He shrugged when she questioned his expression with her own puzzled one. "Not a thing, sweetcheeks. Just enjoying the view." And he winked again at her, realizing that she was not at all on the same page as he was as far as flirtatious behavior went.

"Ah, I was hoping you'd bring some sky for my pocket. Thank you!" He leaned toward her, holding open his shirt pocket for her to pop the pixie sticks into. "Are there any stars in these?"

It was a mixture of interest and curiosity that Luna watched Dean choked/laughed/spat up his beer. What a strange reaction to a simple question. "I thought Vicodin made people more complimentary," she shrugged as she followed his action enough to lean over and peer closer. Personal space really did not factor into her personality, which others tended to take as they did. With two fingers gingerly touching the bottom of the dark tattoo exposed by his movement.

Concern and old memories flowed up, "They marked you?" The words came out nearly in a whisper, remembering marks in her own skin before they had been magically removed. Brushing the fingerpads of those fingers across the word, "Expired" she shook her head slowly. "That was not very nice. Not nice at all."

Her can of beer was picked up, and far more drunk of it in the next mouthful than before. "Our beer," she began to float back to a more comfortable subject, "Butterbeer, it is sweet and fizzy. Warms you up on cold days." It was something that would certainly come in handy here. "When the snow falls all around, shopping for Christmas presents, a pint makes everything toasty and warm." Fond memories of swirling snowflakes, a bottle of butterbeer held in her hands and sitting out with her parents rose and overtook the ones of Lucius and the dungeons.

Looking at the can again as if it was a foreign creature, she jutted out her bottom lip and then nodded. "I think I could perhaps finish two." Although she was not sure what benefits a pair of honorary titles would gain her, they did sound interesting. After all, she did not know any Honorary Americans.

He grinned, and she smiled right back. She did like his smile. It pulled that scar on his chin up in a fascinating way. His words made her look back up at the sky, "It would be a better view without the clouds obscuring the stars, but still lovely." Another wink, he was very good at that.

"You are welcome," Luna smiled with her reply. On a whim she had slipped a few yellow ones in among the blue. Everyone needed sunshine with their sky. To place them into his pocket, she did have to lean in and reach somewhat over him. Which was an interesting proximity.

"If by complimentary you mean loopy, sure. Vicodin is a heavy painkiller though. Most people only take it if they are in a lot of pain. I've only had to take it once, back when I broke my arm chasing a particularly nasty ghost though a rotting farmhouse and fell through the floor." He wasn't sure why he was explaining that to her but it kind of felt nice to talk about something from his past again. This was the first conversation since it had been jogged back into place that he'd had where he'd gotten the chance to reminisce.

He took a long drink from the can, eyeing her as she moved in to touch his tattoo. The expression on her face was so serious that he wondered what else she was thinking about when she looked at the red-rimmed black ink. He winced slightly as her tiny fingers skimmed the lettering, sending a spark of pain and itch through his bicep again. "No," he agreed. "It wasn't nice. I'm not expired. I'm in my prime." He touched her hand with his free one and smiled softly as he moved it away from his arm. His fingers closed over hers gently for a moment before he released them again to finish the beer in his second can.

"Ah so your beer is more a sort of seasonal thing. Kinda like hot chocolate in America. At least, that's what most kids drink when it's cold. I lean more toward coffee myself."

He continued to smile, watching her as she stayed close. Either she enjoyed his company or she didn't have much of a concept of personal space. It didn't particularly matter which was the case because he liked that she was close. She smelled sweet and sugary or maybe that was just a suggestion brought on by the pixie sticks and her sweet disposition. Regardless, this was pleasant. No balancing act of attraction and guilt the way it was with Shannon. This was pretty carefree and relaxed. Her internal peacefulness was infectious and he found himself simply smiling at her like an idiot but he didn't care.

Which was probably why when she leaned in closer to reach over and put the pixie sticks in his pocket, he didn't resist the impulse to kiss her cheek. It took him by surprise but he played it off with a light laugh. "I think some yellow pixie sticks taste like Luna's smiles," he said, teasing her in hopes she'd smile and not smack him for having taken the liberty.

"Hm," and then after a moment. "What does loopiness have to do with 'balls?'" That she was still curious about. "Does it boost testosterone levels?" Luna visibly perked up when he spoke of ghosts, "A ghost? Why were you chasing a ghost?" Didn't he know that ghosts could be a lot faster than humans? That they could float through walls? This seemed interesting.

She had not meant to hurt him in touching the mark, far more used to magically attached tattoos or open wounds than this odd middle ground. Dean gently pulled her outstretched hand away from the tattoo, and the sight of his much larger hand over hers was sort of fascinating. When he released her fingers after a moment, she followed his lead and picked up her own can of beer.

"I like hot chocolate as well," with a firm little nod, she punctuated the fact. Just before wrinkling her nose up slightly. "Coffee?" She shook her blonde head, "I prefer tea. With honey and milk."

Part of the reason that she stayed close was because he was radiating heat, the other was because she saw no reason that she should move. If he had told or asked her to, she would have, but otherwise she could not see a reason that it was imperative. Luna had always found it easier to be peaceful than anything else. Things might come and go, dangers and frightening things, but as long as she could see the sky on occasion, dance when she wanted to and look for her magical creatures, there was little reason to be anything else but herself.

If the kiss to her cheeks surprised him, than the sudden lips against her skin certainly surprised her into blinking. "I don't know if they do." And then she smiled, "Are all Americans this affectionate?"

Sam had been making his way to the church in order to check up on Luna. Something about their conversation the day before had bothered him. Not only that but he'd begun to feel like Luna was the only person in the glass cage that didn't seem to have any kind of expectation of him. Dean always seemed to be studying him for some cue on how to act and Shannon was always looking to him for some way to get out, as had Andy before they'd had their sort of falling out. Even though sometimes he didn't think he understood everything that Luna was saying, he felt comfortable with her and felt like he got her general meaning.

He wasn't sure if he was ready to speak to Andy yet or not, but it'd been a couple of days and now that Dean was there he didn't feel quite as on edge. Besides, he knew Andy probably hadn't exactly had that great of a time of things, considering he'd been popping Vicoden. In fact, Sam felt a little guilty for not checking in sooner.

He moved towards the church, spotting Luna's blonde hair in the dusk and Dean's familiar form. He was about to call out to them when he saw Dean lean into the distance between them and kiss Luna on the cheek. His steps slowed slightly as he tried to work out exactly might be going on between Luna and his brother. Course he knew that his brother was a big flirt, but with his constant teasing of Shannon and now making some kind of move on Luna he suddenly felt a little uncomfortable.

"Hey," he said, raising his eyebrows in a questioning expression towards his brother as he stepped up in front of them. He spotted the open cans of beer and his look shifted into one of slight exasperation. If Luna had reacted the way she had to pixie sticks, he had no idea what a couple of cans of beer would do to her. He forced a smile and looked at Luna, pointedly avoiding looking at Dean. "What are you doing?"
