Day Five - Early Afternoon
Who: Shizuka Domeki & Shannon Rutherford
What: Reuniting after Domeki's experiment
When: Early afternoon
Where: the gas station
Rating: PG to PG-13 I'd guess
Status: Complete

After having left the thrift shop in probably what might be considered the single most hideous outfit known to mankind, Shannon pulled her newly acquired and equally ugly coat around herself, shivering against the chill. She was heading up to the gas station in search of more provisions. Her stash of Slim Fast bars, Snapple, and water was running low and if she planned on continuing to share with the Doctor, Sam, and Dean, she would need more to share.

Shannon had found a backpack, however tattered it was, in the sporting goods section and she had shoved a few more pairs of jeans, her discarded bra and shirt, a pack of panties - score! that she'd found, an oversized men's hoodie, and a package of socks into it. She hoped there was still enough room to hoard some more protein bars and water.

The trek felt a million times longer as the cold air bit at her legs. She must've looked completely ridiculous. Scratch that, I know I look completely ridiculous, she thought as a ghost of a smile tugged at her lips and she rolled her eyes to herself. When she reached the gas station she let the door slam behind herself, shuddering as if to shake off the cold before starting back toward the broken refrigerator.

There was a new display, though, that caught her eye. Her jaw went into a slack smile and her eyes went wide with excitement. "Oh my God, soap!" she squeaked. Picking up one of the tiny travel bottles of shampoo and conditioner in one, Shannon clutched it to her chest and stared up at the ceiling of the gas station. "There is a god..." she breathed, taking two bottles and shoving them into her backpack. She followed it up excitedly with a bottle of shower gel, a pack of disposable razors, a travel-size deodorant, and a tiny plastic bottle of mouthwash. "Oh, my fucking God, jackpot!"

Domeki hadn't slept. To be quite honest, he wasn't sure that he had managed sleep since the time before he had awakened in that strange cell with Bell and he was beginning to doubt when he'd next be able to actually lie down and have a meaningful rest. He had tried to do just that, after the experiment and once he had returned to the safety of a real building, but then the noises from the woods had begun. He had briefly argued with himself that investigating would be the best idea - but the part of him that was too tired and worn to be much good to anyone had rapidly won out.

And then, with the sunrise, came the intermittent noise of sirens.

The initial concern Domeki had felt at the first wail had faded rapidly with regular repeats and he had soon decided to venture out - if nothing else, he knew that he could use a shower and there was the vague hope that either the gas station or the pharmacy would have restocked some hygienic supplies in the short time that he had been gone.

His first choice of the pharmacy offered him nothing of use and he was just opening the door to the gas station to have another try when an ear-splitting squeal reached him. His nerves still frayed from the day before, Domeki found himself tensing in anticipation of some manner of attack - so he could only blink when his eyes registered what appeared to be Shannon, only she was wearing the oddest costume he had ever seen in his life.

"Shannon?" He called rather doubtfully. Rather suddenly, he found himself wondering if it was possible to get so tired that one could dream while sleepwalking.

Shannon was still swooning over the travel-size toiletries when she heard someone call out her name. For a split second, she froze. She looked ridiculous, for one thing, and for another...she knew that voice. The tube of toothpaste she'd had in her hand fell to the floor with a dull thump and she turned around. Today...was fucking amazing!

"Domeki!" she all but shrieked and already she was crossing the room. It took a conscious effort not to run, but if she had he'd have been getting one hell of a show, so she restrained herself. Only, when she reached him, she dropped the backpack and threw her arms around him. "Jesus, I've been asking about you on the journals; all day yesterday and this morning! Why didn't you answer, ya jerk?!" she chastised, pulling back and punching his shoulder in a strange mix of playful frustration and relief. Then, she was hugging him again. "I thought you'd been taken, you know, for one of those horrible things..." she admitted, closing her eyes.

It didn't occur to Shannon at all in that moment that perhaps he'd want some personal space, nor did it cross her mind that he might be in any kind of pain. She was too happy to see that he was alive and standing there in front of her to have any other reaction than the one she was currently displaying.

Finally, Shannon let him go and took a step back, pulling the coat in around herself again tightly. "I'm glad you're okay. I was kind of freaking out," she said in a quiet, sheepish voice.

In the time it took her to carefully walk across to him, Domeki had a good chance to take in just how...interestingly Shannon was currently dressed. The fact that the dress seemed a few sizes too small did register but his tired mind was too caught up in the colorful swirls of the pattern to take much notice of any show caused by her movements. He was just beginning to think that he could discern vague characters in the sworls of the animal print when he became distracted by the fact that Shannon had drawn him into a hug but, rather than showing any displeasure to this, he allowed his arms to raise to support Shannon as she stood.

"I'm sorry. I honestly didn't mean to worry you," he answered quietly. His tone was touched with slight regret at having made her to worry for so long but he didn't think that he honestly could have written anything coherent in his journal the night before - and he hadn't even thought to try. "I didn't even think of checking my journal last night and all I could think of, this morning, was finding a shower."

Domeki managed a wan smile in response to the punch to his shoulder but even this faded when Shannon admitted that she had worried that he had been taken for one of the experiments. He credited the fact that he actually considered not telling her how close to the truth she was to his current sleep deprived state but he knew better than to lie about something which might be important.

"You're right," Domeki finally admitted with a quiet sigh. He closed his eyes and lifted a hand to rub lightly at the bridge of his noise - but he continued to speak, all the same. "I was taken for one of the experiments sometime the night before last - but I'm not injured so there isn't any reason to worry." That much was true - he was uninjured, aside from being more tired than he had ever been in his life. There was also the pounding headache and the dull feeling of long-faded adrenaline but those things were ultimately unimportant. "If anyone has been asking after her, Tinker Bell was with me but I don't know where she went after we were released."

Feeling a change of subject was in order, Domeki made a show of checking out her new dress. "All of that doesn't explain the change in your fashion taste, though."

Whatever his reason for not replying to her asking after him didn't really matter. He hadn't and she'd worried, but he was here now right in front of her eyes and he was still in one pice. That was all Shannon really cared about. "Yeah, well, we're all pretty ripe, by now, I'd bet," she said with a small smile. "I found soap though," she added, the smile growing slightly. "Just over on that display."

The smile faded away when Domeki confirmed her worry. She looked down, brow furrowed slightly. Although he said that he wasn't injured and in spite of the fact that he remembered her, so it couldn't have been anything like what Dean had gone through, Shannon refused to believe that it was as simple as he was making it out to be. If it were, there would've been no point to him having been taken for it, she thought. "Was it terrible?" she asked. "What happened?" She hadn't ignored his comment about Tink, but she stored it in her memory bank for later, in case someone did ask. No one had just yet, so she didn't feel the need to comment upon it.

If Shannon didn't know better - which, she somehow did - she'd have thought, just then, that Domeki was checking her out. Laughing weakly and spinning once in place, Shannon rolled her eyes. "What, you don't like it?" she joked. "I'm trying to win a bet," she explained. "There's this new guy, Leo; we have a bet to see who can stand to wear their outfit the longest. You should see his, though...it's nearly as bad as this, although next time, I'll remember to be more brutal, because as you can see, he showed me no mercy," she finished with a smirk.

Her tone became a little more serious again as her face was drawn. He looked tired. No, he looked exhausted, and she imagined that if he'd managed to fall asleep the previous night, it hadn't lasted for very long before the alarms went off for the first time. Furrowing her brow with concern, Shannon looked back at him. "Are you hungry? You should eat. Or, hell, there's Red Bull in the fridge. Or at least there was, but I haven't looked for more in a few days. It's warm and it tastes like shit, but it's an energy booster. Those alarms have been going off all day..." she said sympathetically.

"I suppose it is hard to be hygienic in a place like this." Domeki agreed with a slight nod. What he had originally meant to say was more along the lines of 'when you're a prisoner' but he honestly didn't feel that the impact of those words on Shannon would be particularly kind - and, even in a state of deep sleep deprivation, he wasn't about to do anything to make life harder for someone who had shown him kindness. Instead, he turned to glance at a nearby display and he was quite relieved to see a variety of products, all of which he probably needed rather desperately. "I don't think I've ever been so glad to see soap and shampoo, though."

"It was--" He trailed off slightly, running a hand back through his hair. The fact that both he and Bell had come through it without being injured made him more inclined to say that it wasn't bad - but there was some other element to the entire affair that prevented him from just shrugging it aside. "It really wasn't that bad. They took us to some small cell without windows or doors and locked us in for the day. There was some dripping water and some noises like the walls were moving - but there wasn't any real threat." His forehead furrowed as Domeki thought back to the situation but his mind was too foggy and confused to make much sense of the situation. "It really helped to have someone else there - but it wasn't...well, it was nothing compared to what happened last time. I don't even remember much of what happened while we were in there."

"It's a new look for you, if nothing else." He laughed in response to her small spin - but he soon forced himself to stop as the sound was strange in his own ears. Shaking this aside, he grinned at the mention of her having a bet with some other resident. "That sounds like an interesting bet - I can only imagine what you must have made him wear, if that's how you ended up."

"An energy drink sounds like a good idea," Domeki nodded. He wasn't entirely sure about trying to eat something in his current state - even if his punch drunk mind stated that nothing could be finer than some kabayaki and a cold beer - but he was aware enough to know that he needed to bring his energy back to normal levels. Deciding that he'd give this Red Bull a chance, he moved to root one out from the fridge. "Has anyone been able to figure out why the alarms have been going? I was assuming that it was just another trick of this place but..."

Giving a small smile, Shannon nodded her agreement. "It's hard to be hygienic in a place like Craphole Island, too, so I'm worse off than probably the rest of you guys," she said with a hint of bitterness in her voice. The smile tugged a little further at the corners of her mouth when he said he didn't think he'd ever been as glad to see soap and shampoo. "That definitely makes two of us," she laughed.

The smile faltered, though, when Domeki ran a hand through his hair and his voice trailed off. Her brow furrowed slightly with sympathy. He told her that it wasn't that bad, though. If she'd been in the same situation that he'd just described, though, she didn't think she'd have done as well as he was saying he had. Confined spaces weren't exactly a fear of hers but they were certainly not something she liked the idea of enduring. Especially with someone she didn't know. "Last time...?" she asked, confused.

Rolling her eyes playfully, Shannon gave him a weak smile. "Yeah it'll only be a one time thing. This is most certainly not my choice in high fashion," she reproached, grinning. "Yeah, you should see the other guy," she agreed with a laugh.

Shannon watched as Domeki made his way to the refrigerators and sent a sympathetic glance after him as he went. She hated to see him so tired. "You might want to take more than one," she advised. "The energy burst you get from that will only last a few hours, but when it fades, you'll crash and burn, just so you know," she added with a small frown. Her brow furrowed again in confusion when he mentioned the alarms. "Not that I know of. Every time I tried to fall back asleep it'd go off again, so I gave up trying and I'm too tired to think about it," she sighed.

"It sounds like you're more used to it than the rest of us. It still seems odd to not be able to bathe at least once a day - and I can barely stand being around myself, for how bad I must smell," Domeki sighed. He knew that hygiene was, ultimately, a very small issue compared to some of things against which they found themselves but the very potential of the possible danger just made a shower seem all the more like a necessary luxury. Picking up a bottle of shampoo and a bottle of soap, he managed a slight smile. "Still, this almost makes up for the fact that it's going to have to be a cold shower. Then again, maybe a cold shower will be better - it might help to wake me up."

"Last time," he nodded agreement, but rushed to explain upon noticing her quizzical look. "I meant that last time people were taken. From what I read in the journals, it sounds as if they were put in a truly dangerous situation - so I suppose there really isn't much point in complaining about being locked in a room." Domeki shrugged slightly but he wasn't sure that he felt entirely that much like forgiving and forgetting. Then again, with how tired he felt at the moment, he would forgive anyone almost anything if they could just provide him with a quiet place to curl up.

"That's good. I was afraid you might have hit your head," he teased her lightly in regard to her sudden change in fashion sense but Domeki did have to admit that he was rather curious to see how the other guy had ended up - especially since Shannon had wound up with such an interesting dress. "Well, if his change of clothes is anything like yours, I'll probably see him halfway across town."

"It doesn't look like too many of the cans are taken, so I'll take a few with me," he agreed. Allowing the door to the fridge to close behind him, he immediately popped the top on one of the cans and took a careful sip. The taste did cause him to grimace a bit but the fact that he already felt a bit more energetic made it a bit easier to swallow. "I should have known. The sirens're probably just another test by whoever is in charge of all of this. I just hope that they don't last too long."

Shannon nodded, a grim expression etched onto her face. "I bet I am. I'm the heavyweight champ of being disgusting," she said, wrinkling her nose. "If you can't stand being around yourself, I'm suprised you're not gagging just being in the same building with me. I haven't had a real shower in, like, two months," she divulged, sounding equally as disgusted with herself as she felt probably Domeki should be.

She smiled a little, sadly, when he suggested that maybe the shampoo and soap would make up for the cold shower, although he thought it might actually benefit him, being as tired as he was. "I really doubt it. Have you ever taken a shower when the water heater is busted? It's one thing when the water goes tepid on you, because that feels cold as hell by comparison. But Michael built a shower in the Rape Caves and I tried it once. It was like ice. It makes your whole body tense and achy and gives you a fuck of a headache. No shampoo is gonna make up for that, believe me," she warned. "Although at least it makes it worth trying to endure it. I wouldn't even fucking bother if there wasn't soap, at least," she added.

Realization dawned over Shannon's features and she nodded. "Oh, right, yeah..." she said slowly, frowning slightly. "I was confusing myself. Yeah, you definitely had it better than those guys, from what I hear," she agreed. "Still...either way it sucks ass," she added. "But, secretly, I'm glad that's all you got. I'd freak out if you came back the way I keep hearing some of those guys came back." Shannon paused and gave him a sheepish smile. "I think I've kind of adopted you as, like, an honorary sibling or something, I don't know. That's so cheesy," she laughed, shaking her head. But it was the truth, no matter how she played it off.

Laughing again, Shannon cocked her eyebrows. "Don't be jealous, Domeki," she chastized playfully. "It's not very becoming. If you'd like, I can find you something equally as exquisite," she teased. "Oh, believe me," she laughed, "you probably can. The shirt is the purplest purple I've ever seen in my life and the pants are this blinding yellow with sequins, like you know those, uh, parachute pants? Fuck, it was so funny, you have no idea. If I could've, I'd have taken a picture. Although, I'm sure he would think the same of me," she replied, careful to sidestep the fact that Leo seemed to be from the past. It wasn't really her place to say, in case he didn't want anyone knowing. They all could build new lives here, even if the process would have to take place in a living nightmare, and who was she to take that away from Leo?

"That's because Red Bull tastes like ass when it's not practically ice cold," Shannon pointed out with a sympathetic grin as he took a sip and made a face. "Yeah, sorry, I know...they're pretty awful, but they do give a hell of a boost and the faster you finish the can, the faster it'll kick in," she told him. "At least, in my experience."

She nodded along with his next statement. She had been thinking the very same thing, however grudgingly. "No time soon, I'd bet. Although, it seems like, by default, if that's one of the experiments...it should end by the end of the night, right? I mean so far that's been the pattern that I've noticed. Nothing seems to last less than a few hours or more than a whole day. So, as much as I hate the idea of those fucking things going off until night time...that'd be my best guess," she replied. "Maybe you can tune them out if you get tired enough? Or we can go back to the pharmacy and see if they have, like, earplugs or something..." she offered.

"I honestly can't smell anything," he moved to reassure her with the slightest shrug of his shoulders. To be honest, all of his senses seemed a touch dulled at the immediate moment but he didn't think that was the strongest reason why - the real reason, he supposed, was that all strong smells seemed to fade from consciousness after being around them so long. In a place like this, where one would almost expect to find a variety of things in various states of decay, that was likely a blessing. "Though, if that's true, you really should get the first chance at a shower, if we ever find a way to warm up the water."

The mention of 'Rape Caves' and the taking of showers therein caused Domeki to raise his eyebrows in silent question but he wasn't going to press for more information - especially not when it was already clear that particular portion of her life was one best left undisturbed. "There have been a few times where I've had to take a tepid shower when the heater at the shrine went faulty - but I'm starting to think that'll be nothing compared to what this next shower will be like," he sighed slightly and shook his head. This was all a very good argument for the importance of finding a way to heat a few massive pots of water but, should they be able to accomplish that, there would probably be many more practical uses. "If nothing else, I suppose the cold will help to clear my head."

"It really wasn't the best experience in my life, but it wasn't the worst either. I'm glad I wasn't injured, too, but I am sorry that I worried you." He offered her a wan smile - the best he could manage in his current state. Really, he probably wouldn't even count the experiences of the day before as anything more than an inconvenience if not for the fact that he was now unable to sleep off the lingering effects. "Cheesy?" For a brief moment, he appeared puzzled by the strange turn of phrase but he imagined that it was just another example of cultural differences. "It really doesn't sound bad to me - I'd be glad to have you as an honorary older sister."

"Ah, I'm sorry. It's hard not to be a little jealous of such a fine sense of fashion," he apologized formally, and entirely in jest, even adding the slightest of bows. "Though, from how you describe the other outfit, I'm not entirely sure that I'm all that eager to have you share your sense of fashion." He grinned slightly, wondering just how ridiculous both of them must have looked after their sojourn in the thrift store and just slightly curious as to exactly how bad the other half of the pair had fared. "It does sound like something from which you should have a souvenir - but I can't imagine that there's a working camera anywhere in town."

"It does leave a lot to be desired but I feel a bit better already," Domeki agreed. Taking her on her word that it would be better if he drank it quickly, he closed his eyes and chugged the remains of the can. As he set aside the can, he had to note that he felt quite a bit better. "Huh. That really is better."

"I'm hoping that it stops by the end of the night. It can't be good for any of us to not be able to sleep and it isn't going to make getting along any easier," he frowned a moment and shook is head. "This place must be getting to me - it almost sounds as if whoever is running this wants us to be at each others throats and is willing to prod us into it by any means necessary." Catching himself, he grinned weakly. "Or it could be that I'm getting paranoid due to lack of sleep. "I think I should be able to tune them out for as long as they last. I'm not too worried - the noise and lack of sleep isn't going to kill me."

Laughing a little, Shannon nodded. "Well, that's good; the smell of me alone would probably knock you dead," she replied with a playful roll of her eyes. Although, when she really thought about it, she felt kind of bad for Sam. No, she felt really bad for Sam, because he'd been the one spooning with her to keep her warm at night and holding her when she cried the night before. The thought made her wrinkle her nose in distaste for herself. Poor guy... "Ha, yeah, you better believe it. I'm gonna brave the cold anyway, honestly, now that I've got an actual reason to," she replied, nodding toward the display of travel toiletries. "Because just as much as I'm sure I smell disgusting...I feel disgusting."

She noticed the questioning arch of Domeki's eyebrows and gave him a weak smile. "That's just what I called them," she clarified in reference to the caves. "Because Claire was attacked in there when she was sleeping. And then kidnapped. Oh, but she came back, so..." she let her voice trail off and felt no need to further the conversation by mentioning that while Claire had come back, she hadn't remembered really anything that had happened before returning to the other survivors. That was a bit too much and she didn't want to drop her mood again when she was so suddenly happy to have found soap and to be in Domeki's presence again. "And yeah...faulty water heaters suck a lot but this is gonna hit you like a ton of bricks. A very cold ton of bricks," she laughed.

Domeki's wan smile was returned with one of Shannon's own as she shook her head and waved off his apology. She didn't care anymore; she knew he was safe and that was what mattered to her, now. "It's okay," she said simply, leaving it at that. Shannon could see that Domeki was puzzled by her use of 'cheesy' but with no idea of how to explain it without confusing him even more, she left that alone. "I've never been a big sister before..." she mused with a small smile. "I've always been the little sister," she added to clarify.

A smirk tugged at her lips when he played along with her, even going as far as to add a slight bow. Shannon giggled and shook her head. "It's really a shame, Heroic Poet, because it was really funny," she replied. "And yeah, too bad, too, because I totally would love to have a picture to remember the whole thing. Although, actually, I think maybe I'll never forget, just because the outfit was so insane I think it's burned into my retinas as well as my memory," she joked.

Shannon was glad to hear that Domeki agreed that the Red Bull helped a little and she smiled. "Almost worth that nasty taste, huh?" she asked. The smile faltered slightly and Shannon wrinkled her nose. "I'll be fucking pissed if it doesn't stop by the end of the night, seriously. I'm tired and grouchy as hell," she said, although she was probably easily betraying the foul mood simply because horsing around with Leo and now running into Domeki took her mind off it.

"It makes me wonder how it must smell for anyone who arrives here, now, after we've all been here a few days." Domeki found that his tired mind was more likely to wander to the stranger of conversation topics but he also found that he was less likely to mind in his current state. It was an interesting thought - that, among the other difficulties the newer residents faced, they also had to deal with the fact that everyone here was unshowered and filthy. He couldn't remember noticing anything like that when he had first gotten here, but his mind had been on a number of other things at the time. "Mm, I intend to take a shower as soon as possible regardless of how cold it'll be. If nothing else, it will build character, hm?"

"Ah," he nodded to her explanation of the strange name for the caves but he easily picked up on the fact that this was likely not the best of topics to choose to focus on. Letting that part of the conversation fall to the wayside, Domeki nodded solemnly to her description of how a shower would be like getting hit with a ton of cold bricks. "The worst part is that it isn't even like at the beach or the pool where you can acclimate yourself to the cold water - it seems like an all or nothing situation." He paused and laughed faintly. "I wouldn't be shocked to hear a lot of screaming coming from the lower floors of the gym in the near future."

"I've never had a sibling before," he confessed in turn with a faint grin. His parents had died early on, robbing him of the chance, but it was likely just as well - as a sickly child, he had needed the extra attention that didn't come as easily when there's more than one. "If it'd make it easier, I could call you 'little sister'? Even if I think you are just a bit taller than I am."

"Perhaps, one day in the future, I'll be lucky enough that I can accept a makeover from you," Domeki joked with the faintest of grins. Generally, he wasn't all that concerned about clothes and outward appearances - but the mental image of what this Leo must have been left wearing made him a touch wary. "I think I might know what you mean about it being burnt into your retinas - I'm not sure that I'll ever be able to forget you in that dress, now that I've seen it."

"Mm. I've tasted worse things in my life - but only a few," he agreed with a rueful nod. Even for this complaints, he still popped the top of a second can and began to drink it. Already, he was beginning to feel a bit wired but he was also aware of how quickly such a feeling could fade. "If it doesn't stop by the end of the night, then we may all need to invest in earplugs at the very least. That much sleep deprivation wouldn't do much good for any of us."

Wrinkling her nose, Shannon laughed. "Ew, I don't even wanna know," she replied. "We all probably totally reek." The idea briefly crossed Shannon's mind that people waking up in the forest might actually smell the other Glass Cage inhabitants before actually seeing or hearing them. She had to consciously will herself not to shudder at the possibility. "Ha, yeah, build character or turn you into a Poetpopsicle," she joked.

With a nod, Shannon gave Domeki a sympathetic smile. "Yeah, exactly. It hits you like a ton of bricks. It's so cold, it's hot and it hurts if you're under it too long," she advised, "so be careful about that. It's no good." Shannon joined in his laughter though. "Or if not, at least an awful lot of startled screeches and squeaks," she replied with a smirk.

Shannon returned Domeki's grin. "Me either, really," she admitted. "Boone was my step-brother. Our relationship was...different..." she said awkwardly, choosing not to divulge the details which would sound fairly incestuous to anyone that couldn't reflexively separate siblings from step-siblings. She'd rather not test Domeki's take on that. At least not any time soon. "You could call me little sister, if you wanted, but it'd be a two-fold lie," she laughed. "It's cool. I always wanted to be a big sister, honestly, I just never got the chance since my mom died when I was little," she added.

"Mmm, that would be very lucky," Shannon agreed in mock seriousness as she nodded. "Although, honestly if you ever did want one I swear to you my sense in fashion is nowhere near this level of lacking," she was quick to point out, laughing. "Oh no...please, please forget this dress once I've changed clothes," she begged, still giggling between words. That was the last thing she wanted - for people to remember the visual of her in this awful outfit. Actually, Shannon probably should've thought this bet through a little more thoroughly before accepting it...

She smiled again with faint sympathy that he hadn't tasted many things worse than Red Bull. "Yeah, I guess it's sort of an acquired taste, you could say," she replied. "I hate it; I'm more of a Monster drinker, myself, but there isn't any in there...I already looked," she said. Pulling a face, Shannon looked over her shoulder reflexively as the alarm went off again, almost as if in response to their conversation. Like it was reminding them that it was there. "Fucking thing. I swear to God if it's still going by nightfall, I will choke a bitch," she muttered.

"It's cold comfort but at least we're all together in the fact that we likely stink," Domeki sighed. It really wasn't much of a comforting thought that they were now a tribe of reeking refugees but he could easily guess that they had greater concerns - even if it did make his skin slightly crawl to think that he hadn't been able to do much to clean himself since before he had arrived. He did manage a grin in response to her comment about turning into a poetpopsicle. "I almost think turning into a Popsicle would be a kinder fate than having to walk around unwashed and miserable for the rest of my time here. I suppose that just goes to show how desperate someone can get."

"Mm, I'll keep that in mind," he nodded and winced at the same time just at the mere thought of standing under water that was so cold - but it still wasn't enough to discourage him from giving the showers a try. "I doubt I'll be very long under the water, though - just long enough to be able to wash most of the gunk from my body."

"I've heard that things are very different with step-siblings," Domeki agreed but he really didn't know enough on said relationships to comment much further. As such, he simply left her comment go - leaving it open for Shannon to explain further if she so wished but also leaving it to drop should that prove more comfortable. "Then big sister it shall be. It should be interesting - my parents passed, too, when I was young so I was always an only child. It should be nice to have an honorary sibling to help look after."

"I might take you up on that one of these days - and I do trust that you don't always dress quite so...flashily," he conceded with the hint of a grin. In truth, Domeki had never spent too much time or effort on fashion - instead relying mostly either on his school uniform or his temple clothing - but he felt that it could be rather interesting to have someone knowledgeable in such things lend him a hand. "Forgetting you dressed like that might be a bit of a challenge, though - it could well be seared into my mind for the rest of my life..."

"Choke a bitch?" Domeki found himself laughing at the unfamiliar turn of phrase. He thought that he could catch the general gist of what she was saying but the phrasing amused him enough to have to repeat it back to her. "You are right, though. I can't imagine what will happen if this doesn't stop by night fall. I'm not sure how much longer any of us can take this." A wan glance was given to the half-empty can of Red Bull in his hand but he did have to admit that the ingredients were already working quite well on him. "Maybe whoever is running this place will be kind and offer some coffee sometime soon - or something else with enough caffeine and sugar to keep us all going."

Shannon made another face at the idea that they all smelled badly could possibly be any comfort at all, cold or otherwise, but he probably wasn't wrong, really. If they all reeked, then at least they wouldn't smell each other; they'd have adjusted to the smell. At least until people started taking showers. Oh man, if she took a shower and Sam didn't, would she still be accustomed to the smell or would he suddenly be repulsive? She didn't like to think about that. At all. "Yeah, you actually get used to it, though, even if you never really like it," she pointed out, knowing from her own experience on the Island that no matter how much she hated being dirty, she'd adjusted anyway.

A sympathetic smile was sent in Domeki's direction when he simultaneously nodded his understanding and winced at the idea. Water that cold felt like a thousand hot knives stabbing you until you came back out again. She hated the idea that he'd have to suffer it, but at the same time, she felt a bit better that she'd given him forewarning. "Kaylee's trying to build a water heater, though," she piped up hopefully. "Dunno if she'll actually pull it off or if she does, when it'll be done, but I know she's trying..." She didn't know if that would be a consolation or not, but it was worth a try.

Not this different, though...at least I fucking hope not, Shannon thought but didn't say. Instead, she nodded. She'd maybe fill him in on the details another time, but she didn't necessarily want to come down off her happiness high to think about it long enough to do so right then and there. "Really?" she asked, taken a bit by surprise when he'd said that his parents had also both died. "Mine too," she offered and then felt almost inappropriate given the timing when she smiled. "Yeah...that will be nice. To have an honorary sibling to look after. Or help look after, I mean," she mused with a fond smile.

Shannon laughed and shook her head. "No, normally I'd rather die than be caught in a get up like this, believe me," she insisted with a grin. "Oh man," she added, wrinkling her nose. "Do me a big, huge favor, and try really hard to forget," she giggled. Because, really, she could think of nothing worse - narcissistic of her, really, but never mind that - for him to have as a mental picture of her. Honorary sibling or not, he was still a guy and she still preferred to keep a specific air about her that the dress was completely contradicting.

"Yeah, what, you've never heard that?" Shannon asked, laughing again. "I will, too. These fucking sirens are gonna give me a headache for real if they don't stop soon," she added with a little more bitterness intermingled with the leftover amusement at Domeki's response to her phrase. "Oh man, coffee...mmm..." she said, closing her eyes and trying to remember what her usual Tazo Chai Frappuccino tasted like. "I'd kill for coffee..." she murmured as she opened her eyes again.

"It doesn't seem like it really matters much how I feel about not being able to shower regularly," Domeki sighed slightly and shook his head. The fact that it had only been but a handful of days since he had been stranded in this strange place did nothing for his mood - after all, if it was bothering him this badly after only a few days, how bad would it be if they were stranded for months or even years? Of course, should that come to pass, then there would likely be much larger problems to occupy his mind. "Eventually, we'll all likely just forget that it was ever a problem. Then again, if this comes to be the worse thing we have to worry over then I suppose we'll be ahead of the curve."

"A water heater? Now that is a good idea." The thought of being able to actually have a hot, or even a lukewarm, shower brought a smile to his lips and he nodded his pleasure at the idea. "If I actually knew anything about mechanics, I would offer to help her. Then again, I would likely do almost anything for the chance to have even a lukewarm shower. For now, though, even scalding cold doesn't seem all that bad - or, at least, seems like it can be withstood for a few moments for a chance to get clean."

"Mm, I was raised by my grandfather for most of my life. It seems almost appropriate, given that we both lost our parents early, that we become honorary siblings, hm?" Domeki returned her smile easily and nodded to her latter statement. "It'll be especially nice, given that this place makes me think that we'll need as many people to help look after one another as possible."

"Oh, I do believe you - though it does make me wonder what this other man offered to cause you to dress so...uniquely." The curiosity was genuine - but he still held enough respect for Shannon not to pry too deeply into her secrets or anything which she might prefer to keep to herself. "Though, since you are a big sister, now, I suppose that I can do you the favor of forgetting that you were ever dressed as you are."

"I've never heard anything like it before," Domeki admitted with a small laugh. "It must be another colloquialism that gets lost in translation. I do like the sound of it, though." He continued to grin amusement at the turn of phrase even as he nodded to her emotion about killing for coffee. "I was almost hoping that there would be some coffee beans or something like that in here so that we could try to brew our own - but I guess soap and shampoo will have to be enough for now."

Shannon matched Domeki's sigh. "You're probably not wrong. Who knows how long we'll be here. I was so sure that we'd only be on Craphole Island for a few hours or days while the rescue boat tried to find us, but then they never came. I think it must've been like two months or something. Maybe more, I don't know. It felt like forever...and out there, we were just on an Island waiting to be found. Here..." she let her voice trail off and gave him a grim smile. "Well, who knows."

Kaylee's idea for the water heater had been the best news Shannon had heard since arriving, quite possibly, she thought, so for Domeki to have the same unhelpful sort of fascination with it made Shannon smile. "Yeah, I'm useless with crap like that, but I'm totally rooting her on. I'd give my left arm for a warm shower, even if it was still kind of cold by normal standards," she replied. "I'm definitely going to brave the ice water today, though, because I haven't had the luxury of shampoo in longer than I can even let myself remember without making myself kind of sick at my own lack of personal hygiene. Oh! Also, I found mouthwash and toothpaste and that stuff, I haven't used since Sydney," she said with a shudder. "I used an aloe vera leaf once, but it tasted disgusting, so I didn't do it again," she laughed. "I cannot wait to brush my teeth. You have no idea," she added in an indulgent voice.

"My dad didn't die until I was, like, sixteen or seventeen...so it wasn't that long ago, but the father I knew died when I was eight. The one that cared about me and had time for me, that is. He married Sabrina and that was the end of him. Boone raised me, mostly, and a parade of nannies. I always used to watch movies with happy little families and think it was total bullshit. That because I didn't have one, nobody did. Fairytale stuffy, you know? I know better now, but..." her voice trailed off and she shrugged. "You know what? Whatever, who cares. We have each other now, you know? So neither of us is ever really going to be alone again," she said with a small smile. There was almost a childlike glee in her eyes, even if the smile was faint and a little bit sheepish.

Laughing then, Shannon wrinkled her nose. "Whatever, you're just jealous," she teased. "Seriously though...I don't even remember...I really think it started when I dared him to wear the awful shirt he was folding and putting away when I walked in and it just sort of escalated from there. He didn't have to do anything to get me to wear it except insinuate he thought he could wear his ugly clothes longer than I could wear mine. I like a challenge. Plus, I mean, it was good for a lot of laughs and I needed those--"

Shannon cut herself off there, not wanting to remind him how worried she'd been about him and how nearly out of her head she'd been over it. She didn't feel the need to make him feel badly about it all over again, after all. Instead, she went back to the next thing he said. "As big sister, do I get to kick the shit out of you when you disappear without a word and then show up at random in the gas station without a word, as well?" she joked, giving him a playful shove. "And I'd appreciate it if you forget this get up, yeah, although as little brother, you're completely entitled to use it against me in the future to get something out of me when I'm being a jerk about it," she said with a wink.

Another grin tugged at the corners of her mouth. "Domeki, I fucking love how you just referred to 'choke a bitch' as a colloquialism," she said, laughing. After a moment when she calmed, she nodded. "Well, there's candy up the fuckin' wazoo...chocolate has caffeine, right? Might be better than nothing for now. But yeah, I'm all for the soap and shampoo...and mouthwash," she said, grinning broadly.

"Who knows," Domeki echoed her softly. There was still part of him that wanted to remain optimistic about the entire situation and there was still part of him that did believe that they could find a way to escape this insane experimental situation and to return to their natural lives; unfortunately, reality seemed to want to do everything in its power to refute any hope he might hold. Still, he did manage a slightly wan smile as he shook his head. "Perhaps, if the results of these experiments prove uninteresting enough, then they'll simply allow us to go. Who would want to keep boring lab rats, after all?"

"Mm, I feel I have no choice but to try taking a cold shower today. I don't think I could stand myself much longer." Domeki agreed readily. He wasn't even sure that it was entirely the fact that he hadn't bathed in a few days that made him so desperate - more, he felt that it was due to the fact that the last day spent locked in that underground cell had left an almost slimy feeling on his skin. He did realize that said feeling was likely more psychological than physical but that didn't make him feel any less like taking a shower. "Shampoo, soap - even toothpaste and mouthwash? I'd almost think I was dreaming to have such a wealth of luck."

He listened politely and attentively to her story but he felt that asking questions would be a bit too much - especially when she dismissed her own stories only a moment later. Still, he was quite glad to find someone in this place on whom he could rely as he would on family - especially someone with whom it seemed he had more than a few things in common. "It's true. We'll keep each other from being lonely and we can do for each other what we missed out on having when we were younger."

"It does sound like a good bet and it does seem as if distractions are pretty important in this time and this place." Domeki smiled a touch wanly. He was doing his best to not feel too guilty that he had caused others to worry over his sudden disappearance but he knew that the best thing he could do for it was to make it up at a later time - until then, he would simply allow it to be forgotten.

"Agreed. You wouldn't be a big sister if you didn't beat me up when I did foolish things - and I suppose that includes when I disappear without a word," he sighed more heavily than necessary and then grinned as he continued. "Actually, I might just save the memory of this outfit for when I'm meeting the man whom you come to love - I imagine this would be exactly the sort of thing he would just love to know."

"You really are just full of interesting phrases, aren't you?" He laughed again at her using 'up the fuckin' wazoo' and made a mental note to remember the two phrases for later usage. "Chocolate and candy along with the Red Bull should be enough to keep me going for a while - though I imagine it'll just make me need the toothpaste and mouthwash all the more later."

That thought hadn't actually occurred to Shannon. If they bored the people running the show, maybe there would be no reason to keep them around, after all. "Or maybe they'd kill us to make room for new lab rats," she thought aloud sullenly. Shaking the thought away with an actual physical shake of her head, she moved to the next topic as though she'd said nothing at all. "I know right? I never thought I'd be so happy to see a tiny tube of Colgate," she laughed. That was mainly true - most of the time, when Shannon thought of travel-size bottles, she immediately likened them to flying. She'd never do that again, if she could help it.

While Shannon had had Boone when she was growing up, their relationship was nowhere near what she had always pictured a sibling relationship to be. From the time they'd both hit puberty, things had changed. Considerably. And not for the better, as far as Shannon was concerned. She somehow couldn't picture Domeki walking in on her in the shower, for example, knowingly. And if he did, she was bigger than he was; he'd never do it a second time. That thought made her smirk a little. "Yeah, I like that. You know, if you ever need somewhere to stay, I'm at the museum," she told him. It wasn't information she offered up freely and she fully expected him to turn it down, but she felt she should at least let him know where to find her. "Or if you ever need anything, that's where you can find me. I live with Sam and the Doctor, but they've both heard enough about you that if you said who you were, I'm sure they'd let you right in," she added. It was her way of letting Domeki know that she really and truly trusted him.

"Oh, my God, if he doesn't already see me in it," she replied, face going red with embarrassed horror. She hadn't thought of that. She really should've thought the bet through before agreeing to it. Sam would definitely see the awful dress at some point, unless she purposefully lost the bet and changed into other clothes after her shower. Or if she cheated, which she considered only briefly before deciding that it would take the fun out of the whole thing. She slapped a palm overdramatically to her forehead and closed her eyes, wrinkling her nose. "I'm so stupid," she laughed.

Looking up again and dropping her hand away from her face, Shannon raised an eyebrow. "Never heard 'up the wazoo' either?" she asked with a smirk. "I have much to teach you, young grasshopper," she joked, reaching over to tousle his hair. "And believe me, you're not wrong about needing the mouthwash and toothpaste even more if you keep drinking those. They taste like shit as it is, but the aftertaste is worse, sadly. I maybe should've warned you of that bit..."

The thought that failure to amuse - or to yield useful results - would result in death had occurred to Domeki in a vague sort of way but he had rather hoped that their captors would be a bit more reasonable. Then again, after all that had happened even in the short time which they had all been stranded here, he could see how hoping for anything reasonable would be an example of foolish optimism. Finding that he no longer wished to linger on those thoughts, he moved easily onto the next topic of conversation.

"I'll definitely keep that in mind, that you're at the museum." Domeki had the idea that it was something rare for Shannon to freely offer the location where she was staying and so he offered her a grateful smile in response. "I might stay at the thrift shop for a while, since it seems like my idiot classmate has chosen to stay there but I just might take you up on the offer sometime soon - and the offer does go both ways: if you ever want a break from the museum or if you ever want something special from the shop, all you have to do is ask."

"Who knows? He might appreciate the humor of the situation?" Domeki offered. Having only met this Sam quite briefly, he had no way of predicting how the man would react but he could see how it could turn to something amusing - a joke or a nice point of reference between the two of them. "Besides, if you explain that the dress is from a bet, then he'll probably understand."

Domeki made a slight face at the ruffling of his hair but he did manage a laugh. "I'm sure after being around my big sister for just a little while, I'll know more than my fair share of colorful language," he teased in return. "It probably wouldn't have mattered if you had warned me about the aftertaste - for how much better I feel now that I drank them, I think I would have taken them regardless."

A glance toward the display of soaps and assorted hygienic goods reminded Domeki of his reason for coming to the gas station in the first place and a glance outside reminded him that he really didn't want to have to shower in the gym basement after dark. Though he was rather enjoying his conversation with his big sister, Domeki knew that it was about time for him to get moving.

"We should save those lessons for another time, I think." He spoke lightly as he moved to collect a few different bottles from the display. A slight detour earned him another Red Bull from the fridge and then he moved toward the door. "I likely should go if I want to be able to shower before the gym basement gets too dark - it was good to see you, though....and I am sorry for having worried you earlier, big sister."

Shannon gave Domeki a small smile, appreciating that, judging by his grateful smile, he understood the gravity she felt came with letting someone know where she was staying. She also appreciated that he had also let her know where he was staying and had reciprocated her offer with one of his own. "Thank you," she said with a nod to let him know she understood and she would, if she ever felt she needed to.

"Oh, I'm sure he would," Shannon laughed. "I just don't want him to. Embarrassing, much?" The idea of Sam seeing her in the dress was just short of mortifying - and only just short because he'd probably understand if she mentioned the bet. And then Domeki made the same observation and she nodded again. "Probably, but still. It's the principal of the thing," she pointed out.

Grinning proudly, Shannon winked. "Better believe it. I can curse with the best of 'em," she said happily. She paused, then, as he moved to another topic. "Oh, right," she agreed, having almost entirely forgotten that he was talking about having a shower and she seemed to be holding him up unintentionally. "No, don't even worry about it; it wasn't your fault," she said with a small smile. She took his hand, then, and gave it a small squeeze before giving him another quick hug, just because she was so happy to see him around and in one piece.

Pulling away, she smiled again. "I'll walk you as far as the museum," she offered. "I'm gonna hit the showers myself a little later, I just have to drop some stuff off," she offered, starting toward the front door, dragging him along with her before realizing she hadn't let go of his hand. She dropped it just after making the realization and pulled the door open, making an exaggerated gesture for him to head out and smirking at him as she did so.

Domeki was more grateful than he could possibly say for the brief hug and the absolution from guilt that Shannon offered - not that he had expected her to lord the fact that he had worried her over his head but it simply made the new promise between them to see each other as siblings as all the more meaningful to know that small things could not come between them. Lightly, he returned the finger squeeze before his hand was returned to him and he offered Shannon another grin as he walked past her to the street outside.

"That sounds like a good idea to me." Domeki agreed readily with her idea to walk together as far as the gym. He could even see it as a further extension of trust, of Shannon allowing him to know and to see where she was currently making her home. "I'd offer to let you know how the showers are before you leave to take one but you may well hear my opinion even from as far away as the museum."

Shannon shook her head and smiled back at him as she followed him out of the gas station, pulling the hideous coat in around herself again to block the cold out. With a laugh, Shannon put an arm around his shoulders and leaned her head down to rest against his as she started to walk. "I'm sure that I will," she agreed with an amused smirk.

She was content to walk mostly in silence, just happy to have Domeki by her side and know that he was safe. Plus, her teeth were chattering slightly. It wasn't that it was actually terribly cold outside, but the fact of the matter was that Shannon spent her whole life hopping from one warm climate to the next, intentionally or otherwise. It had gotten this cold a few times in one place or another where she'd been, but she was far from accustomed to it.

When they reached the museum, Shannon lifted her head again and took a step away to give Domeki his space - which, she realized just then, she had probably been invading without permission. "Chez Shannon," she said with an impish grin, waving an arm with a flourish toward the museum. "...et Chez Sam, et Chez the Doctor, I guess," she added with a small grin.

Domeki seemed to hardly mind neither the companionable silence nor the invasion of his personal space. He found it especially nice to have someone in this place with whom he felt connected enough not to have to speak every thought - and, besides, the closeness helped to drive away a bit of the chill from the cold air all around him.

This chill caused him to shiver slightly and it did make the thought of having to take a frosty shower all the less appealing - but the weather really wasn't all that much worse than what he had seen through many winters; true, then he had warmer clothes to bundle up in and heated buildings but it wasn't anything which couldn't be soldiered through.

When they came to the museum, Domeki took a moment to glance pensively at the building before turning an approving grin to Shannon. "It looks like you've set up a good place for yourselves - and plenty of housemates, too."

At his appraisal, Shannon laughed. "Yeah, it's not too shabby. Then again, I walked through almost the whole town by myself, trying to find a way out on the first day, but since there didn't seem to be one, I just went back to the warmest looking one. This place is dirty but it's not wrecked, so...it's not too shabby," she replied with an impish grin. "And I intended to live by myself, honestly, but then people started disappearing for those experiment things and so I asked Sam to move in because he'd been the one I was talking to the most in the journals at the time. I asked the Doctor to move in after the whole waffling of my trust in Sam," she explained. "But you know, whatever, it worked it self out."

She paused and then gave Domeki another hug. "It's really good to see you back in one piece, sweetie," she whispered in his ear before pulling away and smiling at him again fondly. "And there's always room in Chez Shannon for you if you need it."

Her eyes moved toward the direction of the gym and she smirked. "Try not to make too much noise or you might take all the fun out of the surprise for me," she joked. Hugging herself against the cold, she started up the stairs. "Try and have a nice shower. Keep checking in with each other, right? To make sure we're both okay?"

"It sounds like you gave it a lot of thought before picking this place - but it really does look like you picked well. This seems like one of the safest places in the town," Domeki agreed with a slight nod. Of course, saying that any place in this town was safe was a bit of an exaggeration but, as far as buildings went, it seemed like a winner. "No matter how they came to be there, I really am glad that you have good people staying here with you - I know things seem a lot easier when you don't have to constantly be alone."

He accepted the offered hug gratefully and he nodded to her whisper. "I'm glad to be back in one piece - and I'm also glad to have you as my big sister, now." The fond smile was returned in kind to her latter statement. "I'll keep that in mind - and you're always welcome in the thrift shop so long as you don't mind having to stay with that idiot."

Domeki laughed to her request that he not make too much noise at the gym and he nodded ruefully. "I'll do what I can to not ruin the surprise for you especially since I know how much you're looking forward to your shower later." He offered her a light wave as she headed up the stairs and smiled lightly. "Keep checking in with each other and keep bothering each other - we can't let anything happen to our siblings, hm?"

With a small smile, admittedly one that illustrated that she was actually proud of herself, Shannon nodded. "That I did. That's another lesson learned from the Island. Gotta stake your claim early if you want the good spot," she said with a wink. He was not wrong about things seeming easier when one wasn't constantly alone. Shannon sort of figured he knew he was right, though, so she simply nodded again and said nothing in reply to that.

Shannon laughed a little and nodded. "I don't mind," she said with a smirk. "I'll keep it in mind, too." Her smirk broadened into a grin with his next statement. "Thank you, I appreciate it," she said with mock seriousness. When he waved, she returned it with a light one of her own. "Exactly," she agreed. "Have a nice shower," she said, "or try, like I said," she repeated with a wink. "I'll see you again soon," she added confidently before giving one last wave and heading inside to seek warmth in her shelter.
