What: meeting up, maybe some exploring
When: early morning
Where: in front of the Thrift Store
Rating: PG
Status: Incomplete

Watanuki woke up at the sound of a very loud and obnoxious alarm going off in the distance. Otside the windows it was still quite dark. It hadn't dawned yet.
The boy rolled on the other side and pressed the blanket over his ears to muffle the noise, but with no result. It seemed to be drilling straight into his brain. Then, when he thought he couldn't take it any longer, the noise stopped.

Too shaken to go back to sleep, Watanuki got into a sitting position and fumbled among the things in his bag. He pushed his glasses over his nose, blinking once or twice to get rid of the sleep in his eyes, then pulled open his journal.
Someone had already commented on the strange noise, but nobody seemed to have any idea as to what could have caused it.
Watanuki felt too sleepy to reply back to anyone, so he just scribbled a quick line to Shannon before putting the journal down with his pencil as a placeholder.

Hiding modestly behind one of the clothes racks, Watanuki slipped out of the oversized sweater and pants he used as a pajama and into what he now referred to as his "day clothes". They were rather shabby, but he couldn't bear the thought of sleeping in the same clothes he wore all day round.
He folded his pajama neatly and put it into his bag.
He had no definite plan for the day, but nobody else seemed to be in the zone and he didn't like the idea of staying there alone.
He quickly packed up all of his (few) possessions and hoisted the bag over his shoulder, opening the door and stepping into the glum morning.
Unsure of where to go, he retrieved the journal from the bag and opened it at the page with the crude map of the town, looking critically at it.

"The alarm," she replied, looking up at him. Seeing his hand, Bell fluttered down into it. "It woke me up, and every time I keep trying to sleep it sounds. I need to sleep. Or, if I can't sleep, I need to eat. The problem is that I'm not very good at finding food for myself in this place. The forest isn't really the kind of forest that I know." Whining, she kicked her legs like a spoiled child, looking up at him helplessly. "I'm so tired, and I'm so hungry! I want to sleep!"

Her aura started to turn a faint red, but it turned white and clean when she heard the word "fruit." Sitting up, she smiled up at him. "Fruit? Really? And apple? I'd love it! Are you sure that you wouldn't mind?" It seemed that her little bit of a temper tantrum was over. As long as food wasn't too far off, it seemed that she could hold on for a little bit longer.

"What's your name?" she said sleepily, rubbing her eyes. She was starting to wake up, and that was a good thing. She didn't want to deal with that alarm going off again because of her. "It's very nice of you to take care of me. I was here hoping that someone nice would be around here. I guess it pays to read those journals after all." A little giggle escaped her. She was seeming more like herself.

Watanuki nodded sympathetically. He himself was having troubles getting even in sight of the forest, he could imagine how the little creature would feel about it.
"I was woken up by that alarm as well," he sighed. "It's really vexing. You wouldn't know what causes it, would you?"

He was glad that she would eat the apple - he wouldn't have known where to find other kinds of food, and she looked as if she couldn't go on for much longer on an empty stomach.
He sat down on the thrift store's steps, moving slowly to avoid making the fairy lose her balance, and fished one apple out of his bag.
"I don't mind," he assured her as he cleaned the apple on a sleeve as best as he could, then cut it in half.
"I haven't had breakfast yet and it's nicer to eat together," Watanuki added, and held out a slice for the fairy. He was unsure of how much she would eat, so he saved half of the apple for her and bit on his own half. If it wasn't enough, there was still one last apple in the bag.

"I'm Watanuki," the boy said with a smile and a small bow. "Nice to meet you."
"Yes, it's difficult to survive on your own," he agreed. "I'm glad there's the journals so we can all be in touch."
And we can find out fairly quickly if anyone is missing, he added privately, but he couldn't say it aloud. If it hadn't been for the alarm, which went off at random intervals, it would have seemed like such a fine morning.

"You were? I'm glad that I'm not the only one who can hear it. I was worried that it was just a side effect of me being hungry. Well, at least we're not crazy. That's a great bit of knowledge to start the morning with, hm?" She giggled faintly and shook her head.

When he offered the apple, she took the slice in both hands, holing onto it tightly. It was a little large and cumbersome, but at least he hadn't give her the whole half. She would hate to make a pig of herself. Leaning in, she began biting off tiny pieces from the apple. It was about the size of her torso, but she was so hungry that she was almost 100% certain that she could eat that much on her own. He was her new favorite person in the entire world, and she was glad to have found him...in person?!

"Watanuki!" she cried, setting the apple down for a moment. "It is nice to eat together!" Fluttering up, she hovered next to his shoulder and hugged it tightly. "I've been trying to meet you for a few days now. Imagine me just dripping in on you like this!" She giggled and plopped down beside him once more. Already her glow was golden and sunny, and she began eating the apple with more enthusiasm.

To Tink, now that she wasn't so hungry anymore, it was a wonderful morning. Who needed sleep when you had good food and great company?

Watanuki was relieved to see the fairy eating the apple. She already looked as if she was recovering.
When Watanuki realized that she was the person he had been talking to through the journals, his smile widened. It was a bit weird to have his shoulder hugged like that, and he awkwardly patted the small fairy on the back, but he was glad to have met Tink in person. Now everything made sense, including why she wanted a dollhouse to live in.

He was glad to have met her in person, since she seemed friendly and talking with her put Watanuki at ease. He had to agree with her, it was nice to eat together like that. He carefully finished his own half of the apple, wondering what to do with the core. Garbage disposal might become a problem if they weren't careful...

"Have you managed to find a place to live in?" he asked Tink, recalling their last conversation. "I'm afraid I didn't find anything suitable, though I'm planning to tidy up the store a bit tomorrow so I might find something I've overlooked."
He didn't say that he hadn't been exactly looking for teapots and dollhouses: Tink's request had sounded a bit strange to him at the time, and he'd put it out of his mind.

It was always strange and enlightening for her to meet people that she thought only existed on paper in person. For starters, it made her feel substantially less alone. It also made her feel that, if this was the afterlife, at least there were other nice people there. For someone who had no idea what dying would be like and had no theories on what would come after, there were definitely worse things.

"Oh, no, I haven't found anywhere to live just yet. Like you, I haven't found anything suitable. I've been bouncing around from place to place, landing here and there from time to time. Where you just found me, on the lamp post, was where I fell asleep last night. It was up high, and I didn't think that anyone would be able to find me there. My glow turns off while I'm asleep, and if I woke up and the light was still on nobody would be able to see me. Did I do good?" she looked up at him like a small child who wanted to be praised. As far as she was concerned, for someone who never really fended for herself and who liked the finer things in life, she was doing a damn fine job.

Picking up the apple core, which was a bit large, she smiled and nodded. "Hang on, I'll be right back. I'm going to go drop this in the forest so some squirrels can eat...unless you need to eat it yourself? I know that fairies don't eat the middle part. It's tough and it doesn't taste very good."

Watanuki found Tink's behavior a bit strange, childlike almost, but he was used to spirits who had an eccentric personality. Besides, her good mood was contagious.
"I don't think anyone would have been able to find you up there," he nodded. "It was a good place to sleep in, especially since... well... it's not very safe to sleep alone here, isn't it?"
He tried to sound as convincing as he could, which wasn't much. Privately he didn't like the idea of Tink being all alone last night: if someone had brought them in that place and let wild animals free to roam, he doubted that there really was a single safe place in all of the town. He wondered if there were birds of prey around and hoped he wouldn't have to find out.

"There are a couple of people staying at the thrift store right now," he said. "It's not very clean, but I wanted to tidy up a bit later. I was thinking to stay there since I don't like moving around all the time, maybe you could sleep here with us?"
Watanuki looked hopefully at the little fairy, hoping she'd accept his offer. She's be safer sleeping inside, and he was sure he could get her something to live in, if not a dollhouse.
He smiled when she picked up the apple core. "No, humans don't eat the core either," he nodded. "Be careful when you fly near to the forest," he couldn't help himself from saying.

"No, it isn't safe to sleep alone. I've only woken up in a strange place once. I was taken from where I was sleeping, in the graveyard, and I woke up with Domeki in a cell. There are worse places; I don't know what I would have done if I had woken up there alone. Can you imagine that? No doors, no windows, completely dark, and alone? I've been very, very lucky of late. I think I'm luckier here than I ever was before I got here."

"I thought I was pretty genius sleeping in the lamp, though. If you couldn't notice me and you've been around here frequently, then I don't really think that anyone would ever notice me if I continued sleeping up there. It's far more secure than sleeping on top of a tombstone."

That was when he suggested that she stay. Her eyes wandered up to his face and widened, and her mouth opened slowly, jaw dropping. The glow around her body got brighter and brighter, and it was almost blinding when she let out a squeal. That was one of the nicest things that had happened to her, and she was most pleased to have found Watanuki. He was an upright guy, and he reminded her of one of the Lost Boys somehow; which one she could not possibly say, nor would she ever really know, as she had never gotten to know them intimately.

"Do you mean it? Do you really mean that I could stay? Thank you! Thank you so much! Watanuki, you're the best!" She flew up and gently placed her hands on his cheek. Leaning in, she kissed him softly. It was like a butterfly kiss, her wings lightly brushing against his cheek. It tingled somewhat, as well, and it left a faint glow behind that faded after a few moments. "I promise I won't make you regret it."

Not waiting for an answer, she darted off into the forest. Her body was a golden glow when she zoomed off, and before he knew it she was back again. Taking a seat beside him again, she grinned up at him. Her feet swayed back and forth, toes wiggling.

It was the first Watanuki had heard of Domeki and Tink being locked up together, and quite apart from being retroactively worried he was quite curious about the details. "You don't know who locked you up?" he asked. "And how did you escape? I'm sorry for asking so many questions," he added.

Tink's sudden display of affection startled him again. It wasn't as if he wanted to act cold with the fairy because he didn't like her, actually it was quite the opposite. But he wasn't used to all these displays of affections, and at any rate Tink was exaggerating - it was only natural that she'd offer her to stay. The thrift store didn't belong to him anyway, and the other girls probably wouldn't mind having Tink around. She was so small they wouldn't even have to add another makeshift bed among the clothes racks, and besides she looked cheery and nice to talk with.

"Yes, of course I'm serious," he grinned, but Tink had already flown away. He stared nervously until she reappeared again, wondering if the little fairy had any power she could use to defend herself but too shy to ask her outright.

If there was one thing that Tink was good at, it was wanton displays of affection, especially with boys. She liked the feeling that Watanuki had. He was a nice person, a kind person, and he seemed like someone she wished she'd met a long time ago. There was something a little bit disappointing about the fact that he didn't seem particularly adventurous, but that was fine; it could be remedied.

Returning to him, she seated herself on his leg, looking up at him. A grin spread across her face from ear to ear. "Oh, yeah, the Domeki and I were locked up together. We woke up in a little tiny cell. That doesn't really matter, though. It's neither here nor there, nor is it relevant. I'm free now, right? And that's what matters. I hope that nobody else has to go through that ever again, though. It was a pain in the ass."

Reaching up and tugging his sleeve, her fingers curled into the fabric. "Hey, Watanuki? We should go somewhere, or do something, or have even a little bit of an adventure. I feel a lot better now that I've had some food. What were you planning on doing today before you'd run into me?" She smiled slyly and winked at him. "Of course, I know they're probably pretty drastically different now. I am a fairly influential kind of beauty. Regardless, I would like to hear what you were going to do."

Like a little kid waiting for instructions, she rested her chin on her hands. Her glow was a bright and happy golden color. She couldn't wait to meet the other people who lived in the thrift shop, but if she never did and only knew him, it wouldn't be half bad.

Watanuki was a bit disappointed that Tink wouldn't tell him about being locked up, but he had to agree that the important thing was that she and Domeki were now fine. "Yes, let's hope so," he echoed. Though in this place it seemed almost inevitable for strange events to take place. As long as nobody got hurt...

Her sudden desire to find "an adventure" almost made him groan aloud. Apart from waking up in the forest some days ago, nothing much had happened to Watanuki and he would have preferred nothing much to keep happening to him. He couldn't understand why the fairy seemed so happy at the prospect of adventuring. However, he didn't have any previous plans for the day.

"I was simply planning to walk around the town," he replied. "I wanted to see where the other buildings are for myself, and if there's anything useful. And I wouldn't mind meeting someone else in person," he added after a short pause. He still hadn't got used to this meeting people through the journals.
"Are you going to explore with me?" he asked with a small smile. If Tink wanted adventure, he'd feel much better knowing that she wasn't alone. Besides, if they were together he could make sure that the fairy wouldn't go anywhere really dangerous.

It had never occurred to her that being locked up might be a big deal. It seemed that they had escaped; wasn't that the important part? And their escape hadn't been all that dramatic. An unfamiliar woman had, in fact, come to let them out. She'd unscrewed the roof, undone the lock, and they were free. The fact that the Domeki had been able to fly? Not relevant. The fact that there had been water slowly trickling in? Okay, not so bad. It wasn't like it was rising fast or anything. All in all, it had been a pretty decent ordeal.

"Are you hurt? Why did you make that sound?" she asked when he groaned. The idea of adventure as a negative was completely foreign to her. It was probably bad for him because he did not understand that anything, any ordeal at all, could be an adventure. There was the adventure of finding food, the adventure of finding water, the adventure of meeting up with Watanuki. All of these things, in her small world, were adventures.

"Walking around and exploring sounds wonderful! The Martha and I were supposed to do more of that, but then we had a fight and then she disappeared. I'm not quite certain why she disappeared. Maybe she just went off exploring on her own." She shrugged. People going missing never bothered her all that much, or she tried not to let it do so.

As for going alone, Tink seldom went anywhere by herself. She was more of a follower, a pretty accessory of sorts. The thought of wandering off on her own, when she wasn't either very angry or very sad, was unfathomable to her.

Watanuki didn't know how to explain to Tink that he didn't want to have any adventure. She was like a child, really, and her diminutive size helped accentuate that.
"It could be dangerous," he eventually pointed out in a reasonable voice. "You know that... a woman has been killed a few days ago?"
The boy didn't like to bring up the subject, but he felt that the most important thing was to make Tinkerbell understand the dangers of wandering off.

"I'm not saying that you shouldn't explore," he hastily added. He didn't want Tink to get upset. "It is wonderful to explore. Um. But it's better to explore with other people, isn't it?"
He felt torn, on one hand he didn't want Tink to wander off on her own but on the other he didn't want to wander around with the fairy. He hoped he could persuade her that it was in their best interest to be careful and try to avoid adventures for the time being.

"Of course it could be dangerous, Watanuki. That's the fun part of an adventure, the possibility of danger. The most fun part, though, is avoiding or getting through the danger and then coming home and talking about it, reliving it all over again! Even small adventures with relatively no danger sound much, much better in the retelling. The way you talk, it seems like you've never even had an adventure!"

The idea of someone who had not had an adventure struck her as, to say the least, odd. She couldn't imagine someone who didn't see everyday living as an adventure. Big adventures, small ones, she loved them all, and she never wanted to give it up, no matter how many times she told herself that was one reason she shouldn't miss Peter in the slightest.

"A woman was killed a few days ago. That is very sad. But Peter says...said...that dying would be a most wonderful adventure. It's the next big adventure. Granted, he hasn't gone on it yet, but I wouldn't be scared in the face of death. It's just another adventure." At least that was what she hoped. She didn't want to think about the alternative: death was just an odd blackness and an absence of anything, including the idea of absence bothering you.

"Adventures are best had with other people. I would never go exploring on my own. I'm just not strong enough to do anything about any problems that we find. I mean, I'm good at hiding, but that doesn't help if we discover, say, the pirates kidnapping Princess Tiger lily again! I haven't got any way to fight them off. That's why you should come with me! You should decide where we're going, and what adventure we'll have, and I will gladly come along with you. I much prefer to follow or to scout; either way as long as someone is as close as possible to me."
